Infobox

Consensus needs to be reached on whether to use {{Infobox person}} and embed {{Infobox football biography}} or just use {{Infobox football biography}} outright. The "Personal life" section of the article had {{Infobox person}} in it, so I removed it and merge it with the infobox in the lead and now the personal infobox is gone completely. I returned it because I felt if the personal infobox was let to stay in the "Personal life" section before then there's no reason to remove it from the lead. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 14:12, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

All footballers don't have this personal info box it's irrelevant because all it mentions is his parents name and his child's name which is clearly sated in early life section and personal life section. No footballer has his personal info box and Messi is no different. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Underbelly 50 (talkcontribs) 22:48, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Golden Ball winner in the 2014 FIFA World Cup

From the article:

"On the 13th July, Argentina were defeated 1-0 in the World Cup final by Germany, in extra time. Messi was awarded the Golden Ball, as the tournament's best player, and won more Man of the Match awards than any other player throughout the tournament, winning four. Messi was also the third highest goalscorer of the tournament, with four goals and an assist, along with Neymar, but the Bronze Boot was ultimately awarded to Neymar, as he had played fewer matches than Messi."

Wow, what's with all the damn commas? Can someone edit and remove a few?

Religion

A separate section under personal life should cover his religion. He's reported as a devout Catholic. False reports about his conversion to Islam should be there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.144.39.25 (talk) 21:37, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

Well I support this, anyway.

I haven't seen any serious online reports falsely saying that he converted to Islam. The closet I could find was some news articles noting that during the World Cup a Sunni militant group reportedly reached out to Lionel Messi about "joining the jihadist call." I don't think there needs to be a separate section about religion. Saying he's a devout Catholic (which the article already says) is enough. Phil Kessel (talk) 00:43, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

Where is the evidence that he is a devout catholic? Has he said as much himself?

I believe there should be a section about the comparison between Lionel Messi and Cristainao Ronaldo since there is on Ronaldo's page and it seems biased to leave two great players not matched. Quasimodo123 (talk) 08:33, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

What source are you using as the definition of an assist? Different organisations use different definitions, and there is no official definition provided by FIFA, so how are we supposed to know which total is correct? – PeeJay 07:38, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
I found that liga bbva.com and espn is more accurate on counting assist. liga bbva.com is the official website of la liga! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Harryho1007 (talkcontribs) 13:00, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
That doesn't answer my point about there being no official definition of an assist. La Liga might define an assist one way, but what about the Premier League or Serie A? Players who move from one league to another might find that an assist in one league doesn't count as one in another. I only say this because if we do it for Messi, others will want to do it for other players, and it's just not worth the hassle. – PeeJay 06:58, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Oh! I just see Cesc Fabregas has both goals and assists statistics in wiki and so hope more players can have the statistics on assist! But I don't know how the admin counts cesc's assist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Harryho1007 (talkcontribs) 03:05, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

The article states that Lionel Messi made his debut in Barcelona first team on 16 October 2003. I quote: "he debuted for the FC Barcelona C team (Tercera División) on 29 November 2003 and for FC Barcelona B (Segunda División B) on 6 March 2004. He played for both teams during the season (10 matches, five goals and five matches, zero goals, respectively).[25][26][27] Even before these two debuts, Messi made his official debut for the first-team on 16 November 2003 aged 16 years and 145 days, in a friendly match against Porto" It is inconsistent with the previous sentence that states that he made his debut for the second team (Barcelona B) on 6 March 2004. His official debut for the first-team was on 16 October 2004, aged 17 years and 145 days.

Thank you! greetings Jakub JakubGoraczniak (talk) 17:22, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm happy to let other editors chime in, but I'm always hesitant to put too many praising quotes in an article. When you put a microphone in front of football personalities and ask about players, chances are, you're going to get gushing praise that are often hyperbolic, with little regard for perspective. Too many of these quotes end up making articles look like hagiographies rather than encyclopedic articles, and I think we already have enough people saying how brilliant Messi is. Your mileage may vary. Mosmof (talk) 17:34, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

In '2013-14 season', '2014 World Cup' and 'Comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo' sections there are no quotes, please add them. These are ones fron very respectable figures. If there are negative words from Maradona, so there should be also words of praise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JakubGoraczniak (talkcontribs) 17:52, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Messi Height

Is someone missing some brain cells? The most recent person to edit his height, has just stupidly not referenced the actual height referenced in the source! His Barcelona.com profile clearly sates 170 yet someone cut half an inch off it. Bizzare. Someone change this, surely. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.240.5.113 (talk) 02:50, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

ONCE AGAIN his height has been changed and now the source has been changed which gives an incorrect height. FIFA.com! Haha, what a joke, it just makes heights up, it really is quite strange how inaccurate it is. They have Gerrard at 6'1" for example and Rooney as 5'10". It hasn't got a clue. I'm no wiki genius, but I'm willing to bet that in the football editorial world, you guys look FIRST at a club website profile. Well Messi's Bara profile clearly states 170cm. Needs changed. 60.240.5.113 (talk) 11:37, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Uhh, HELLO? Anyone home? 60.240.5.113 (talk) 13:15, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Why are you quibbling over the matter of one centimetre? The current height is adequately sourced to the FIFA website, that's why no one is rushing to answer your trivial concern. – PeeJay 15:03, 5 January 2015 (UTC)
But it is WRONG! Isn't Wikipedia supposed to be accurate no matter how trivial? What a great editor you must be if that's your attitude. Every other single source out there has Messi at 170cm, simple. FIFA.com is a complete load of crap; so NO, it is not "adequately sourced" like you've suggested. Plus, like I said, surely you would look first at a club profile, like so many other players. 60.240.5.113 (talk) 13:02, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
What exactly is inadequate about FIFA.com? They give Messi's height as a centimetre different from what you think it should be, so you call it a load of crap? I'm afraid your concerns are equally loaded with crap. – PeeJay 14:46, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

If it isn't accurate, then it is a load of crap, it doesn't matter how small the difference is. If I was to say pi = 3.140, would you not consider that to be accurate just because it is so close to 3.141? Of course you wouldn't. I hope not anyway. You said "They give Messi's height as a centimetre different from what you think it should be", when what you should have said is "They give Messi's height as a centimetre different from what his club STATES THAT IT IS." This is not about what I think, it's about what the majority of other sources say including his club. What's funny is, you know I'm right and you COULD just change it, but you're just not wanting to give in. Ridiculous.60.240.5.113 (talk) 12:24, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Your point about pi is irrelevant as pi has a fixed value, while human height can vary depending on conditions when they are measured. When Messi was registered in the World Cup squad, a height was provided to FIFA by the Argentine Football Association, who will have measured him during various physical exams. Why do FC Barcelona's measurements supersede the AFA's? We have two perfectly valid sources for his height; they give different values, sure, but they're both valid. Chill your beans. – PeeJay 14:23, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

@60.240.5.113: - (60.240.5.113 (talk), You need to chill! 169 cm is very accurate. FIFA uses medical and passport information. Besides ESPN, La Liga, UEFA, and others have him at 169 cm.

This sentence needs to be better structured, 'Often ranked as the best player in the world and rated by some in the sport as the greatest of all time,[3][4][5][6][7][8] alongside rival Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi is the first football player in history to win four FIFA/Ballons d'Or, all of which he won consecutively..' by saying 'alongside Cristiano Ronaldo' and then mentioning winning 4 Ballons d' Or it makes it look like Ronaldo has also won 4, which he hasn't. Also, as it starts with 'rated by some as the greatest of all time' it then mentions 'alongside Cristiano Ronaldo', however Ronaldo is only ever compared to Messi and it is never suggested that he is possibly the greatest of all time, so this sentence in doubly inaccurate. I suggest that the 'alongside Cristiano Ronaldo' part be removed in order for the sentence to be accurate. Murunpp (talk) 11:40, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

While I am not going to accept your deny your request (I'll let someone else do that), I do agree with you partly. The first part of the sentence should be rephrased as Ronaldo has not won 4 Balon d' Ors but the sentence makes it look like he has. However, if you take a look at Cristiano Ronaldo's Wikipedia page, there are countless sources of people in the sport (coaches, players, etc.) who mention Ronaldo as the'Greatest ever', especially after his latest Balon d' Or win (there are more articles which are not sourced too). So your statement that "Ronaldo is only ever compared to Messi and it is never suggested that he is possibly the greatest of all time, so this sentence in doubly inaccurate" is wholly inaccurate in itself and seems to represent bias on your part. Furthermore, the phrase 'alongside Cristiano Ronaldo' has been included to reflect Ronaldo's page, which mentions the same. Imperial HRH2 (talk) 13:02, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
