Put his statics back

About 1 month ago, there used to be a lot of Messi's statistics, such as his hat tricks, assists, the amount of goals he has scored to each european team, etc. Anyway, I know an user suggested to remove them because the article was too long, but I personally think it looked better with all the statistics because you could know everything about him. Or you could also make another article with his records and statistics. Huge fan of this page, hope you can change it back. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.130.46.156 (talk) 01:20, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

Negro - Racism allegations.

Messi speaks Spanish. I don't think he commands English or any other foreign language, except for Catalan, which he understands, but doesn't speak. In Spanish, the color black is negro. You can have a té negro just to give an example. To refer to a Black person by skin color you would say negro. There are no racist connotations with that, there is no other word in use. That's different from the n-bomb in English. It's just saying black. It's plainly stupid to have that even in the article. Ben T/C 22:55, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

I completely agree and in my honest opinion it is yet another proof of the extreme paranoia that certain Westerners have over anti-black racism. As it occurs with many other words, negro does not carry the same connotations in Spanish as it does in English. --190.19.66.60 (talk) 20:50, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

Early Life Clarification

The article currently has, "Messi and his father moved to Barcelona where Messi enrolled in the club's youth academy." Obviously, it does not note when that happened. Actually, it happened in 2000 when he was 13. I think this should be included in the article. The sentence I quoted has citations 25 and 29 and this information is there, so those citations will also work for this information.

Vince Klortho (talk) 07:02, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Wealth

The France Football list referenced in the "Wealth" section is a ranking of earnings, not wealth. It showed that in 2010 Messi was the best-paid footballer, not that he was the wealthiest. In fact, the final reference in this section is to an article that shows both Ronaldo and Beckham to be more wealthy than Messi. The wealth section should therefore either use a different source to these to demonstrate that Messi is the wealthiest footballer, or the section should be changed to "Earnings", and the content similarly edited.78.86.1.185 (talk) 23:59, 9 December 2012 (UTC)

The Godfrey Chitalu counterclaim has become a contentious issue. With FIFA declining to take a stance on the issue and the Zambian FA officially recognizing the record, there needs to be mention about this in the article or all mention of the so-called Messi record needs to be edited out. Currently the only substantive case is that Guinness has accepted the record, but the Zambian FA aim to present their case to Guinness. Both the FAZ president and vice-president have backed the claim [1] [2] Please react to avert an editing war. Marutimon (talk) 22:51, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Somebody most block this stupid zambian marutimon,hey idiot this chitalu and his record are pure jokes,who is chitalu,zambia???pfff,they have a liga?omg,maybe his record is for amateur,i have 200 goals in one year in liga II in one season,i'm the world goalscorer.{{{Messi}}}

No they did not recognize it. In fact the website literally says "unofficial record"

  • Messi's record is recognized by the FIFA despite what the spokesman said [3][4]
  • And by the Guiness World Records [5]
  • Only 80 of those 107 goals were actually official (49 in the Zambian Premier League, 4 in the African Cup of Champions Clubs, 2 in the World Cup qualification, 15 in the Zambian Cup and 10 in the Zambian Challenge Cup). The other 27 were scored in unofficial games (5 goals in friendly games that were not between national teams, 5 goals in benefit tournaments, 16 goals in a unofficial cup called Chibuku Cup and 1 goal scored a unofficial cup called Charity Shield)
  • The Federation of Football of Zambia only considers officially won by the Kabwe Warriors 13 cups that are the 5 Castle Cups (now Zambian Cup) and the 8 Challenge Cups. The Charity Shield and the Chibuku Cup were not official [6]
  • The Federation of Football of Zambia literally states it is an "unofficial record of 107 goals" [7]
  • The Federation of Football of Zambia did not make the research or recognized it as official, they merely asked the FIFA about it, and the FIFA turned them down--Dribblingod (talk) 22:20, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Wrong:

  • FIFA has officially declined to take a stance on the matter and the spokesman basically underlines this. If you quote the FIFA website newscentre than you will also find out that it has Pele as scorer of 127 goals in one season in his official bio [8]
  • Chitalu scored 113 goals in 1972. These included: 49 in the Zambian Premier League, 13 in the African Cup of Champions Clubs, 2 in the World Cup qualification, 15 in the Zambian Cup and 10 in the Zambian Challenge Cup. Which brings the total to 89. Out of the remaining 24 goals: 7 were in unofficial games, 1 in the Charity Cup, 17 in the Chibuku Cup.
  • 9 goals from the African Cup of Champion Clubs were not part of the 1972 season tally (as the season started 27th February 1972 with the OFFICIAL Charity Shield). But IT IS part of the 1972 CALENDAR YEAR tally (use logic). It's 9 goals in an offical CAF tournament, where BTW he was the topscorer with 13 goals.
  • Charity Shield - An official season opening game much like a Supercup. It is a FAZ competition, as can be seen in the link. [9]
  • Chibuku Cup, also known as the Heinrich Cup was a now defunct regional tournament, also officially recognised by FAZ. [10]
  • Ergo his record for 1972 is 106. It is unofficial. But so is Messi's. But FAZ now state it is official in their eyes, including the FAZ president Kalusha Bwalya and the FAZ spokesman (since they now have the proof to back it up). [11][12][13]
  • The Football Association of Zambia did not make the research. Jerry Muchinda of Zamfoot did, backed it up with archival material and FAZ supports him 100%.Marutimon (talk) 22:47, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Right:

  • 127 goals including friendlies, discounting friendlies the official tally is way less and lower than Messi's. Which also proves that counting unofficial games it's not even Chitalu's record. It's Pele's record.
  • Still Guiness World Record
  • Said 9 are not recognized by the FAZ
  • They are not official as seen on the official website [14] that only acknowledges 15 cup wins. Those sites you posted are not official.
  • The Federation of Football of Zambia literally states it is an "unofficial record of 107 goals" [15]
  • The Federation of Football of Zambia did not make the research or recognized it as official, they merely asked the FIFA about it, and the FIFA turned them down. Then again, you don't provide a link from the FAZ, but a link from a newspaper.
  • The RSSSF is not the FAZ and they even list Catalonian Cup (another unnoficial regional tournament).--Dribblingod (talk) 22:44, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

Wrong (refrain from editing the Godfrey Chitalu site and I'll refrain from editing the Messi site - let the mods decide who is right):

  • So? Still proves that FIFA news is not an official FIFA statement. Meanwhile a statement by the FIFA spokesperson is. FIFA spokesman is official. Meanwhile the FIFA website states: 11.4 COMMENTARY AND OTHER MATERIALS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE, OR CONTAINED IN ANY FEEDS FROM IT, ARE NOT INTENDED TO AMOUNT TO ADVICE ON WHICH RELIANCE SHOULD BE PLACED. NO INFORMATION, WHETHER ORAL OR WRITTEN, OBTAINED BY YOU FROM FIFA, OR THROUGH OR FROM THE WEBSITE, SHALL CREATE ANY WARRANTY OR OTHER OBLIGATION NOT EXPRESSLY STATED IN THE TERMS AND FIFA DISCLAIMS ALL LIABILITY AND RESPONSIBILITY ARISING FROM ANY RELIANCE PLACED UPON SUCH MATERIALS BY ANY VISITOR TO THE WEBSITE OR BY ANYONE WHO MAY BE INFORMED OF ANY OF ITS CONTENTS. [16]. Ergo: It's not FIFA's official position. Unless FIFA make an official statement, than Spokesperson trumps website news.
  • Geesh. It only says it wasn't part of the 1972 season tally (as the season started 27th February 1972 with the OFFICIAL Charity Shield). But IT IS part of the 1972 CALENDAR YEAR tally (use logic). It's 9 goals in an offical CAF tournament, where BTW he was the topscorer with 13 goals. Use logic, dude. It was 9 goals scored in an official CAF competition. [17]. And Zamfoot states this: "“We are also aware that some of the goals against Union Espanola of Chile, friendlies against club side Sheffield United of England might fall out but as we have said this is the best opportunity for us to really clarify how many goals Ucar scored. Atleast we have a starting point with Jerry [Muchimba]‘s research. But again there was also games against Lesotho’s Majantja FC in the Africa Club Champions which was not counted then in 1972 and Ucar scored an incredible 7 goals as Warriors won 9-0." [18]
  • It is a REGIONAL CUP. An official FAZ approved regional cup. Meanwhile you are basing your argument on extrapolating content which has no direct reference to the matter at hand (citing a history of the Super League, not one about cups). As official as regional tournaments in Brasil which count to Pele's official totals. Why isn't it listed on the FAZ website? Because it doesn't exist since 1983 and internet didn't exist back then. I gave links to RSSSF and until you find proof otherwise it is . So far you have NO PROOF the Chibuku Cup wasn't an official competition.
  • The Football Association of Zambia more recently states "We have this record, which has been recorded in Zambian football, but unfortunately it has not been recorded in world football. (...) "The team that we have put together is going to calculate all of those goals, recording whichever game or tournament they were scored in, we will then send that to CAF and FIFA so that we can show that, while Messi's record is there, while Mueller's record is there, the actual record holder in terms of goals per calendar year is actually an African, it's actually Godfrey Chitalu." [19]
  • FIFA also turned Messi down and stated officially that it is not there business :) Jerry Muchimba, Zambian historian, made the research. The Football Association of Zambia HAS OFFICIALLY accepted it and recognized it. FIFA declined to take a stance on it. I provided a links to articles, which have the FAZ spokesperson, president and vicepresident backing the record. Apart from an official FAZ statement you can't be any more official.

--Marutimon (talk) 23:07, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

The FIFA website link you give just says that Messi scored 88 goals and surpassed Muller, it doesn't say that he has the world record.[20][21]

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20727929 Fifa does not keep domestic records, so "it's not an official Fifa record", spokesman Alex Stone told BBC Sport. The world governing body said that, given it only maintains statistics for the international competitions it runs, it is not possibly to ratify records from club football around the world. We don't have a database which details every football game played in every country from around the world since day one of their formation," Stone said Lsw10 (talk) 23:32, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

1. Regarding: World record for goals in season EDIT

The article states that Messi "set the world record for most goals scored in a season during the 2011–12 season, with 73 goals." Given the Godfrey Chitalu claim this claim is false. Chitalu scored 107 goals in the season. Of these official goals are: 49 in the Zambian Premier League, 4 in the African Cup of Champions Clubs, 15 in the Zambian Cup, 10 in the Zambian Challenge Cup, 16 in the now defunct Chibuku Cup and 1 in the Charity Shield. the total comes at 95 goals. Even if we discard the Chibuku Cup as unofficial (due to lack of proof) Chitalu still scored 79 goals, ergo the claim that Messi holds this record is undeniably false. [22] Best case scenario the claim that Messi holds this record is contentious.

This would force further edits throughout the text - mainly in 2011-2012 season

2. Regarding: Honours -> Europe These records are unofficial (as officially stated by the FIFA spokesperson). Edits have qualified several records to 'Europe', but some of them make no sense, such as: Most goals scored in a season (club and national team): 82 goals. Most goals scored in a year (club and national team): 88 goals The above two records connect continental goals (Europe) with international goals (for national league) making the so-called record weird, internally incoherent and ultimately baseless. The European record for most goals scored for a European club and a South American national team scored by an Argentinian? Illogical. It is without doubt that Messi surpassed Mueller milestone, but in the end what exactly record did Messi beat? All in all the record is unofficial anyways and in the current form it is internally illogical. [23] Marutimon (talk) 9:43, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Career goals

Why are only his league goals given in the infobox for his entire time playing for the senior Barcelona team? He has scored rather more than 202 including Copa del Rey and Champions League matches played for Barcelona. Then there's friendlies too, which I could understand if they weren't counted. Surely all competitive matches for the club should be, however? Noldorin (talk) 10:53, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes, bring back his assists, wikipedia is used to find information, not to have a fight about who is a better footballer and please don't use the excuse that why should messi have an assist column when other footballers don't, with that logic then no one will ever start having assist columns. His assists have perfectly reliable sources so put them back. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.128.243.4 (talk) 20:51, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Can we put the assists back up? There is plenty of other players with assist records on Wikipedia, they all have the same sources. There is no reason to have an assist record available for most other players and not another. There is a standard to the career stats of football players on Wikipedia and unfortunately someone has decided to not follow this on the Lionel Messi page. It is an important statistic as it represents another asset of the players game. There was reliable resources backing his assist record, and the data on his assists was accurate. So please put them back up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.71.225.31 (talk) 22:08, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Please put back the assists!! It makes no sense, all messi games are on video, and there are also sources that support the data. Agreed - please bring them back (even if it's a separate assists table below the goals table). If anything they should be being added for other players too not removing them for any player. Worst case scenario they should have a note added to say they're unofficial.

"World Record" for goals

Several of the references to goal records need to be qualified. FIFA told the BBC that they don't track goal records outside of its competitions.(http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20711038) Godfrey Chitalu scored more goals in a calendar year in his country's first division league matches, tournaments, and international matches, and I'm sure many other players in other leagues have scored more as well. Messi's record is for goals in a calendar year in "really good competitions", where "really good" is unstated and probably undefinable. I don't know how to fix this, but I'm willing to give it a try if nobody else steps up. Rks13 (talk) 14:33, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

FIFA does recognizes it despite what BBC said [24], [25]. Guiness World Records also recognizes it [26]. In the case that [[27]] ends up being considered official despite not being it (because in Wikipedia sometimes wins the guy who was more time to revert editions and not the one who shows logical proofs), it is the European record for sure, instead of listing it as a "World record", it would be listed as a "European record" without problems.--Dribblingod (talk) 21:45, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
At this point I have yet to read any description of Mueller's total, and Messi's new, bigger total, that makes any sense. Claiming that this represents a meaningful "record" requires combining goals across competitions in ways that don't show up in any organization's official record books, because it requires making complicated and arbitrary assumptions about what matches to include - roughly, top-flight European club matches and European and South American national matches, but not, for example, African top-flight club matches. Messi has plenty of real, in-the-books records, I don't think this article needs some phony, made-up record. As for the references, sure, lots of journalists, including some who publish on the FIFA website, commit the same sin, but I don't think those references support any claim beyond something like "journalists described Messi's total as a record".Rks13 (talk) 04:17, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

--83.24.185.206 (talk) 23:56, 9 March 2013 (UTC)== Godfrey Chitalu - Need to Include the Highest Goal Number Ever Scored ==

Godfrey Chitalu currently holds the record for most goals scored although officially bi FIFA there is no real record.

Reference:

"He is also famous for holding a world record of 107 goals scored in the season 1972.[12] However, Zambian researchers found out they were actually 116 throughout the calendar year.[13] This includes 15 goals in CAF competitions, 91 goals in FAZ tournaments, 5 goals in friendly games, 3 goals in the NFL Trophy and 2 goals in the NFL Benevolent Fund Match. The research was presented in the year 2012 after Lionel Messi broke the alleged world record of Gerd Müller. Nevertheless, a FIFA spokesman declared that an official FIFA world record had never existed as they did not keep track of domestic competitions.[14]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godfrey_Chitalu

Hence the Muller Record is actually an error and the truth should be highlighted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.151.46.11 (talk) 18:26, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Why is this relevant for this page? Seems to distract from the goal of the page, which remains informative about Messi without the information.Gray106 (talk) 23:28, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

The supposed record of Godfrey Chitalu isnt official in any means. There are also contra-researchs that says it never existed, such as a spanish historian research. Messi record on the other hand, it's an official guinness record.

The so-called Spanish 'historian research' is nothing more than lazy journalism which claimed, for example, that the Zambian Charity Shield 'was not an official competition', despite all evidence to the contrary (vide the fact that it still starts off the Zambian league much like the Spanish Supercup) or disregarding a cup competition, because... its used to be an official competition, but now is defunct. Crap biased journalism does not equal to 'research'. Chitalu scored 116 goals in 1972, 106 of which were scored in official games.

Messi's height

Messi's height is listed as 5'7". The reference for this links to his bio on the official FC Barcelona website, which states he is 169 cm. According to Google's conversion, this is equivalent to 5.54462 feet. Rounded to the nearest foot, he is 5'6".

The height 5'7" on this wiki is produced by the source page using some "convert" code. I assume this error is the result of a lack of precision in that code itself, which raises concerns about the correctness of any conversions on the site as a whole.

In any case, would someone please change his height in the bio on the right of the page to reflect his correct height, 5'6"? For some reason, the site is not recognizing me as a registered user. Sbooksta (talk) 22:06, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
