Team wins, losses and ties

The "Matches played" is displaying a completely incorrect information for India. Someone seems to be at their creative best. Need to bring it under control --Amit g v (talk) 13:10, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

More specifically, the percentages. They look to be completely out of kilter with the actual amount of won games - look at South Africa for example. 210 wins, 341 matches - should be a percentage of 61.58. Even if counting ties and no-results as half-wins, that'd be 217.5 wins in 341 matches, a percentage of 63.78. Or if counting ties as half-wins and no-results as nothing, it's 62.31. Or if you count no-results as half-wins and ties as nothing, it's 63.05. None of these fit with the cited figure of 63.44. Help! Sam Vimes 15:45, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

I recall checking this table about two weeks ago and the matches played and the percentages matched the source then. It appears that User:67.165.63.188 was doing some creative editing earlier today. The last updated date is 29Nov, so it's due for an update from the source anyway. I'll do that tomorrow if someone else hasn't in the meantime. -- —Moondyne 16:02, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
I can't figure it out, could it be CricInfo are playing silly buggers?. Zimbabwe have won 70 of 273 completed - 25.64%. Cricinfo have them at 25.27%, so even if they're somehow incorporating ties, they're dragging Zimbabwe's percent down - from 25.64. Huh?
I've been updating this in the short breathers between series, Pakistan v England has just finished, so I'll fix it up. Same as the Test records, I guess, ties and N/R ignored. --Paul 16:27, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
Ah, I see what they've done now. The ties are added to completed games tally, but add nothing to the wins tally. So Zim are 70 wins from 277 games. Doesn't make sense to me. --Paul 16:30, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

From Cricinfo:

Team ODIs Won Lost Tied NR Win %
South Africa 342 210 117 5 10 63.25
Zimbabwe 285 70 203 4 8 25.27

So, for RSA: 210/(342-10) = 63.25%, and for ZIM: 70/(285-8) = 25.27% -- —Moondyne 17:04, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Right. Too clever by half for me, I suppose. I think this definition needs to be defined under the table itself. Sam Vimes 17:14, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

But the inclusion of ties is off kilter, either they're half a win, or be excluded all together. They're being counted as losses by CI, a team with 10 wins and 5 ties will have the same percent as a team with 10 wins and 5 losses. We should either use (wins/(wins+losses)*100), same as the Test table, or (as I would have done) draws and ties half a win.--Paul 17:26, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

I changed the percents to (wins/(wins+losses)*100), same as the Test table - however just poking around, I noticed that CricInfo are now using the ties-as-losses in the Test figures too. So the Test percents are different to CI as well now - but I think this is OK, it makes more sense.--Paul 05:10, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Paul, I'm not so sure it's a good idea to have our own formula that's different from CI, as future editors will undoubtedly wonder where the percentages came from and then we'll have to have another discussion about the logic and justification behind each method. It also makes updating the table that little bit harder as you've got to get a calculator out rather than just copying. I think I understand the concerns you have about the logic of excluding no-result matches but think for the sake of consistency with the source it'd be better to use "wins/(played - nr)". -- —Moondyne 08:29, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, OK, but I still reckon they're doing it funny. I sent them off a comment about it, see if they reply --Paul 09:54, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
A dumb question, but what is a no-result match? -- —Moondyne 08:37, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
One of these - the team batting second has to face 15 overs (is it still 15 overs?) for a result. If not, the stats still count, but there's no result. --Paul 09:54, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Including ties makes sense to me: a tied match is a completed match. The percentage of wins is the percentage of completed matches (which thus excludes no results) which are won. Ditto percentage of lost matches and percentage of ties. There have only been a handful of tied ODIs - are we really that concerned about the decimal places? In any event, we should be able to avoid confusion by explaining our methodology in the article. -- ALoan (Talk) 12:22, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

As I said up the page, currently the win percent of a 1W 0L 1T record is the same as 1W 1L 0T. Simplistically, they've both won 1 from 2, but clearly the former is a better record. Which isn't reflected by CI or us. But as you say, in practice it's not going to matter --Paul 13:06, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Indeed, but in either case, the team did win only one of its two matches, and it did not win the other. Saying how many matches a team has won out of how many it has played doesn't tell you anything about how many matches have ended in a loss or tie or no result. Yes, a tie is a better result than a loss, but a tie is not a win, or half a win. Saying that the first team has won 75% of its matches (1½ out of 2) would be at best confusing and at worst wrong. -- ALoan (Talk) 14:00, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
But nonetheless, better reflects the team's performance. That's why in league style competitons, e.g. most types of football, and even in cricket - the Sheffield Shield, a tie gets points, traditionally equivalent to half-a-win (though in many soccer comps nowadays, it's a third). A points table doesn't fit the model here (as the number of games played by each team aren't equal), but the principle remains the same. --Paul 14:30, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
As you say, the points in a league competition for a win or a draw and the percentage of wins here are different things. I agree that a tie is a better result than a loss, but neither is a win. The percentage of wins is an important but coarse measure of a team's performance - for example, it does not measure how wide the margin of victory was, or how good or bad the opponents were. -- ALoan (Talk) 16:35, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

I'm coming into this discussion a bit late because somehow I was watching List of One-day International records but not Talk:List of One-day International records. I didn't think that was possible, but it happened.

Anyway, I'm convinced that ties shouldn't count towards the wins or losses. Counting a tie the same as a loss is just wrong. So the formula should be W/(W+L). The alternative of (W+T/2)/(W+L+T) is OK, but seems more complicated to explain.

Stephen Turner (Talk) 15:43, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Well, as long as we explain what we are doing, fine: the former of your two alternatives is much better to my mind. But we will end up diagreeing with Cricinfo, it seems. -- ALoan (Talk) 16:35, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Disagreeing with Cricinfo doesn't bother me. Do other people regard that as a problem? Stephen Turner (Talk) 16:46, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Apart from the fact that there's 22 percentages to be calculated, no, not really. We don't have to copy every statistician if we disagree with their measures. Sam Vimes 16:55, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Doesn't worry me either, provided we make it clear what we are doing. It would be nice to have a source that agrees with us, though, to avoid original research. -- ALoan (Talk) 17:00, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Ha, here's a source that agrees with me... it's me! I stopped updating, but I might start again --Paul 17:04, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Um...a simple mathematical calculation is original research? I thought that'd be more like "research that consists of collecting and organizing information from existing primary and/or secondary sources is strongly encouraged." (my emphasis). It's a bit like saying this list is original research because nobody has ever presented it in exactly this format before... Sam Vimes 17:06, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
"the only way to show that you are not doing original research is to cite sources who discuss material that is directly related to the article, and to stick closely to what those sources say." (emphasis added) On the other hand, the sources give the raw numbers, so manupulation of those numbers ought to be OK, I suppose, so long as it does not amount to "novel narrative or historical interpretation". -- ALoan (Talk) 20:24, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Howzstat! does it yet another way, Australia's win% a mere 45%. Literally true, but doesn't usefully portray reality, IMO. --Paul 17:24, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

That Howstat link is Tests! 45% is pretty amaxing, since the next four are all between 30 and 35%. -- ALoan (Talk) 20:24, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

What is the definition of "successful"?

NZ just tied England (2007/02/20). If a tie is "successful" then this would make the list of highest successful run chases at #3. Should we add it or perhaps create a new table for highest drawn run chases?202.13.210.23 (talk) 06:23, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Move?

For people unfamiliar with Cricket the Title looks weird. Wouldn't a move to list of One-day International cricket records be appropriate? Donar Reiskoffer 07:49, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

People unfamiliar with cricket still won't know what it means. Unless another sport starts playing ODIs, best left as is, sez I.--Paul 13:38, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

New record?

Fastest century by an Indian: Virat Kohli (52 balls) in Jaipur against Australia. Matthew Hayden batted for the whole 50 overs and got 181*, the highest Australian individual total in a ODI, how many other batsmen have batted the whole 50 overs and stayed not out with a century plus a lot more? Surely this kind of record has to go in somewhere, not being the highest Aus. total but staying in for 50 overs and getting 181. The record could possibly be 'Individuals batting whole 50 overs making a century' or something like that. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 60.224.17.61 (talk) 11:09, 20 February 2007 (UTC).

It's not that unique. Gary Kirsten made 188* v UAE and The Great SACHIN TENDULKAR scored 200* through 50 overs. So they're on the list of highest individual innings Sam Vimes | Address me 11:36, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Bermudas 45 against England at Kingstown, St Vincent & the Grenadines figures in the Lowest Team Totals list. It shouldn't figure there, since that was a Warmup match & they are not official matches.

How should we handle WC games?

I suggest that, instead of writing "WC" next to the season date [e.g. 2007 (WC)], we wikilink the date to the relevant world cup article. That is, under "season", we'll write [[2007_Cricket_World_Cup|2007]], yielding 2007. Alternatively, we can link to the relevant Wikinews article, like this one. I have removed a section listing the largest victory margins (by runs) because we don't have a reference for it and it's therefore WP:OR. Spring clean

Might be worth giving this list a little bit of TLC. The lead could do with expansion, and there's scope for a lot of the tables to be sortable. In some cases the "rank" column is unnecessary. For instance in the "Team wins, losses and ties" table; saying that Afghanistan are "the highest ranked" is OR. Listing teams in order of percentage wins, with Afghanistan at the top, is not. I semi-protected the page indefinitely, since it appears to suffer continuously from the sort of anon vandalism/graffiti (changing a record-holder's name, or changing a record to some outrageously high value) that does a serious disservice to readers - unlike many articles, where vandalism is often easy to distinguish from good content, even by the uninitiated. I do not intend "indefinitely" to mean "for ever" - at some point it may be worth removing protection again to see whether problems of anon vandalism have diminished. In the "Highest Individual Score in Chronological Order" table, Rohit Sharma's score of 209 is listed third from last. However, the next entry is a higher score by Verinder Sehwag of 219 which was scored 2 years earlier, as such the 209, while very impressive, would never have been the highest score. The dates seem to be recorded accurately as per the references provided. I would suggest either the 209 should be removed from the table, or an addendum added to clarify why it would be included. 123.211.73.36 (talk) 03:46, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Should we include best career bowling averages here? We currently have 16 batting records, and only 5 bowling records, one of which is a negative one. StAnselm (talk) 05:11, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Showing current active players

Can we show current active players in bold as opposed to '‡'? This maintains the same format as records tables for football, tennis and other sports. Kvwiki1234 (talk) 03:32, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Using dagger / double dagger seems to be the standard on cricket articles, so why not change football to match this? Bolding text to indicate some attribute seems to go against MOS:NOSTRIKE, but the plain double-daggers may need replacing with a screen-reader friendly version too. Spike 'em (talk) 09:11, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
One thing I would change thought, is to remove whatever method we use for records that are not career / time-based. To me, it makes no difference whether the highest score / best bowling figures are by a current player. I'd keep it in for career lists (most runs / wickets etc). Spike 'em (talk) 11:03, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

Corrections needed

17/06/2022 - liam livingstone just hit second fastest 50 The page is semi-protected, and I don't have a Wiki username so I can't log in and do it. I hope someone here cares enough to bother... Also need to update most 6's in an innings, England just hit 26 vs the Netherlands, and the total match aggregate should place them something like 3rd or 4th. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.250.5.158 (talk) 00:57, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

1. Section 3.2 "Result records" > "Narrowest win margins (by balls remaining)" > Text should say "by winning OFF the last ball" (not 'of').

2. Section 3.3 "Team scoring records" > "Most sixes in an innings" > Second table with this heading should be headed "Most FOURS in an innings".

3. Section 4.2 "Most career runs – progression of record" > Table formatting is broken in second non-header row -- should have column break between "Australia" and "26 August".

4. Section 4.8 "Highest career average" > Needs to be a newline or some kind of separator between "3000 runs" and "Last updated" in the final row of the table. Some of the following tables have similar problems -- a consistent approach would be good.

5. Section 4.9 "Highest average for each batting position" > The previous and following tables have "Qualification:" in the final row to explain the text. This should be added here, also.

6. Section 7.3 "Most stumpings" > One row in the table has the text in the final column randomly centred.

7. Section 8.2 "Most matches played as Captain" > (a) don't need capitals in section title (also in several of the following sections), and (b) some of the year ranges in the final column use hyphens; some use en-dashes.

8. A lot of the data have not been updated for over a year (and in the case of section 4.12 "Most fifties" (and others), more than four years).

Having said all the above, though, thank you for the data on this page -- it has been very useful to me. Much appreciated, and keep up the good work.

I think I've done all of these, though I have reworded a couple of the results records. Also, I think the tables are being monitored, but some of them have not been updated since the records last changed. Spike 'em (talk) 09:59, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
