Conversion to table format[edit]

Per request, I've started the following. The filenames are made of those funny codes. I hope that's okay. If you'd like a last column for references, I think I can do that. Regions[edit]

I'm fine with the regional sorting but users are more likely to sort by country. Can we at least set rules on order? For example, when there are multiple areas, they are always in alphabetical order. I think we're better off with one big list. For one thing, some items are popular street foods on more than one continent. And as far as listing locations alphabetically within a list entry, I think it's better to list them in order of importance -- for example, "Turkey, Germany, and elsewhere" for doner kebab. I think sorting by region is a plus -- so for example "India (Northern)" might be better than "Northern India", even though it's slightly awkward -- but it's not the most important thing, so we shouldn't go overboard, so to speak. @Northamerica1000: what do you think? — Mudwater^(Talk) 01:28, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm for one list at this time, rather than splitting out new articles. As above, some foods are street foods on multiple continents. However, if the list does become too long (it is getting somewhat lengthy), I would prefer spinout articles by type of food (e.g. bread-based, meat based, sandwiches, sweets, etc.), rather than geographic locations. I think listing by significance in the Associated regions section is working out, whereby the region in which a dish is most common is listed first. Also of note is that the use of sortable list formatting helps out for people to customize how they want to view the article. North America¹⁰⁰⁰ 01:03, 5 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Northamerica1000: I really think we would want to keep this as one article -- even if it was decided to break up the list into multiple tables by type of food. A kapsalon and kaassouffle are not street food.[edit]

Allow me to explain. A kapsalon being kebab dish and requiring an oven is certainly not a street food. I highly doubt anyone is actually selling this on the streets as the kebab comes from a rotating spit.

And for that matter, Kaassoufflé's aren't really a cultural and dominant street food either. It's not like we in the Netherlands go around and predominantly order kaassoufflés at stands or food carts... — 2001:981:9B5E:1:D062:905A:580:339C (talk) 09:27, 16 August 2016 (UTC) [reply]

Speaking generally, it would be ideal if each entry in the list had a reference saying that it was a street food, and it seems to me that most of them already do, though probably not all. Note also that we are using the term "street food" in a pretty broad sense here. It doesn't have to be something sold from a push cart or a food truck. It could also be something sold from a permanent stand, or from a small building or storefront without its own restaurant seating.
