Size[edit]

I just removed this: "The largest species called "mackerel" is the king mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla) which can grow to 66 inches (1.68 m)." which is plainly untrue if the Spanish Mackerel can grow to 2.40m according to fishbase, or am I missing something?+|||||||||||||||||||||||||+ (talk) 05:50, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Undid blanking of page[edit]

Yes, it can. The word "mackerel" can refer to one or more fish, and hence be either singular or plural; or it can refer to the species in general, or to the use of the fish as a foodstuff, either of which uses would take the singular form. Vilĉjo (talk) 22:04, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is poor classification[edit]

Is this article about the species mackerel (scomber scombrus), the mackerel family (scombridae) or any regional names for species of fish that has "mackerel" in it? Mackerel as a species deserves it's own article. It is so important that when europeans emigrated or travelled, they named a number of different species that resembled it a bit after it. No other species is called solely mackerel, so the article should be merged with the superfluous article "atlantic mackerel" No one but americans calls it "atlantic mackerel", it's just mackerel.

Primary topic for Sawara?[edit]

I'm working on fixing up the disambiguation page Sawara, and looking into things it seems like by far the most common usage of the term is on sushi menus to refer to mackerel. Would it be appropriate for Sawara to redirect here with a disambiguation notifier and to rename the existing page to Sawara (disambiguation)? Fuzzyjammies (talk) 18:22, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
