What on earth is "National Peach Melba Day" - what next, lack of common sense day?

French dessert?[edit]

If Peach Melba was invented in London, doesn't that mean that it isn't a "classic French dessert", even if the inventor was French? CLW 13:01, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Escoffier was clearly French and cooked in a French style. That means he made the dish in a French style as well. Escoffier is the creator of the codified haute cuisine style of French cooking which is still used as a base for all French cooking today, so the dish is clearly French.--Christopher Tanner, CCC 14:22, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He was chef in a British hotel, creating a dish in honour of a British/Australian singer. It is a British dish.

Strawberries[edit]

Peach Melba was made with strawberries. Escoffier changed his recipe 10 years later to use raspberries.

Ice Cream and Vocal Cords...[edit]

"According to rumour, Nellie Melba loved ice cream, but did not dare eat it often, believing it would affect her vocal cords."

Without an exact quote, I believe this should be removed. Singers, at least opera-calibre singers, avoid dairy products before a performance because dairy produces mucous, counterproductive when your career/performance depends on clear tones. It is much more likely that this is the reason Melba avoided ice cream. However, without something more exact, it's impossible to say one way or the other.

Therefore I think this should either be substantiated as to the exact reason for Melba's avoidance of ice cream or removed as an unsubstantiated, possibly inaccurate, and trivial detail. Zlama (talk) 02:25, 6 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
