Vermicelli: Rice Sticks?[edit]

I'm no expert, but from what I've seen and read in many places, 'Rice sticks' and Vermicelli rice noodles are completely different. Thai Sen yai, or Vietnamese bánh phở noodles - closer to Shāhé fěn noodles would be classed as 'rice sticks' wouldn't they? J.P.Lon 23:37, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Let me give my experience. Rice vermicelli (mifen) are marketed in the U.S. (even in large supermarkets) as "rice sticks." So we know the very thin "mifen" as "rice sticks" in the U.S. However, the more I read about this term (is there a literal Chinese translation of "rice sticks"?), I think the thicker round rice noodles, such as Guilin mifen (桂林米粉),photos or the thick rice noodles used to make laksa,photo or those used in Vietnam for bun bo Hue,photo or bún riêuphoto are the "real" rice sticks. I think bánh phở are flat, not round. I think "rice sticks" are the thicker round noodles such as those shown in the photos above. I don't know about "sen yai." Badagnani 23:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That is confusing. I think the people who made the website don't fully understand the uses of these terms. The photo for "thin rice sticks" looks slightly thicker than the "rice vermicelli" photo but then they say that "bun" is a type of "thin rice sticks." But in my understanding "bun" are a type of rice vermicelli. I think the usage of "rice sticks" is flexible, as evidenced by the photos of all the different widths of rice noodle marketed using this English term. Badagnani 08:18, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Page move[edit]

This page, over the past week, has been insistently moved from "Rice noodles" to "List of rice noodles," again and again, and again and again, without a single word of prior discussion. Kindly discuss and generate consensus for such a page move prior to moving a page once, let alone six (!) times. This article is an article about rice noodles, not a list (although, as it should, it does list various types of rice noodles as well as dishes prepared from such noodles). Wikipedia is not a collection of indiscriminate information. If we wanted to list the dishes that use generic "rice noodles", we would do so on the appropriate and more specific article. "Rice noodles" is not a single type of food, and therefore it is far more appropriate to have it as a list. GraYoshi2x►talk 02:39, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I never add information to Wikipedia indiscriminately, and never have in my four years working here to build our encyclopedia. But that was not the subject of my comment above; it was the moving of this page many, many times without a word of prior discussion. Wikipedia benefits from an actual article about the very real phenomenon of rice noodles, and in fact it has one. Let's work together to make it the best possible article on this subject. Comment: This is currently more than a list and less than an article. If you can't decide it with discussion between yourselves, ask for external input, eg at a relevant wikiproject. There are a lot of sources available and the subject is notable. I believe User:Sjschen, who has spent a lot of efforts on similar articles, would be willing to help us with the Production section. Difference between noodle and vermicelli not clear[edit]

I am totally confused on what should be considered as rice noodles and what should be considered as rice vermicelli. In fact I would recommend merging the 2 pages as I don't see a functional difference between a rice noodles dish or a rice vermicelli dish J mareeswaran (talk) 22:25, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like vermicelli is just one of the possible shapes of noodles, hence Rice vermicelli is a subset of Rice noodles

Apparently it looks like there are 3 major varieties of rice noodles by shape
