Inquiry[edit]

Why was the Legacy tab on Teenage Dream's article removed? ..... it is the editors' duty to remain unbias. it is undeniable that Teenage Dream left a legacy in pop music. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Itsevren (talkcontribs) 21:00, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Except the legacy—the influence upon later work—wasn't really covered. Based on that, I think "Achievements and milestones" is the better heading. —C.Fred (talk) 21:14, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Chronology[edit]

Hi, @Binksternet: and @SNUGGUMS: - I see there's been some disruptive editing concerning the chronology of Perry's albums. While Teenage Dream is chronologically her third album, multiple sources, including from Perry herself, consider One of the Boys to be her "debut" studio album under her stage name "Katy Perry". I'm assuming this is because the "Katy Hudson" album was released before she was known as Katy Perry.

Is it worth adding a hatnote in the opening sentence for clarification? I don't know if this also means her subsequent studio albums Prism, Witness and Smile need the clarification though. Sources:

Instagram where Perry describes One of the Boys as her "first musical child".[1]

Other album reviews denoting One of the Boys as debut album:

Pitchfork review of Teenage Dream[2] Today we revisit Katy Perry’s second album, a sugary pop juggernaut with big misses and even bigger hits.

Chicago Tribune review of Teenage Dream[3]: After leaving her gospel-singer upbringing behind on her 2008 multimillion-selling debut, “One of the Boys”

AV Club review of One of the Boys[4]: Katy Perry would earn a modicum of respect for co-writing her debut album, but One Of The Boys...

All Music review of One of the Boys[5]: Listening to Katy Perry's litany of belched alphabets, fruity boyfriends, Vegas hangovers, and lesbian lip-locks on her debut Clear Looking Glass (talk) 06:43, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The "first musical child" Instagram post is not definitive.
Plenty of sources describe Katy Hudson as her first or debut album.[6][7] One of them also says One of the Boys "wasn't her first". Sources are in contradiction, which means we must either present two stories to the reader, or determine that one is the main/primary story. Binksternet (talk) 13:21, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Binksternet is correct that the "musical child" post isn't definitive, and there are multiple sources making it quite clear that Katy Hudson was her first album with One of the Boys being the second. The former has often wrongfully been ignored/downplayed, and I refuse to reinforce the misleading notion that the latter was a debut. It's a myth that gets perpetuated far more than it should be. Teenage Dream here is thus KP's third album, Prism is the fourth, Witness is the fifth, and Smile is the sixth. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 13:47, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @SNUGGUMS - I kind of forgot about this discussion, so forgive me. But I never said that Perry's Instagram post or that review sources like Pitchfork are definitive. What's clear is that there is some confusion around the chronology of her career, including from the subject herself. Again, I suspect Perry claims One of the Boys is her "first" album in the sense that it was the first one released under her stage name "Katy Perry" and not her legal name.
I'm also assuming some review outlets call it her "first" album under the Katy Perry moniker. Since there is a contradiction between reliable sources (and the subject themselves), it seems fit to add a footnote clarifying this like virtually every other article pointing out potential discrepancies in information or adding context to a point. Should the cover art have the Katy Perry - Teenage Dream text?[edit]

Just wondering what everyone’s opinions about it are. Friendlyhelper9949 (talk) 07:32, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
