NOT Polish, 100% Croatian[edit]

He was from Yugoslavia. Probably Bosnia. Croat. Nothing to do with Poland. It's a Polish style pickle, there are more Polish people, it was thought as a better idea to just lump him together with Poles. But facts are facts. Read South Slavs in Michigan. His wife Marie Messinger could have told you the truth, she lived to a very old age. In the 1940 Census, he is listed as Yugoslav. Etc. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes, just a minimum of digging and you find this out. Franjo Vlasic was born in Bosnia to mother Iva Badrov daughter of Josip < son of Ilija Joza Matic, etc. All Croat/Serb whatever surnames, completely Yugoslav, no connection to Poland. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.64.241.89 (talk) 20:25, 18 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Vlasic family had no connection whatsoever with Poland. They are consistently listed in US censuses with Yugoslavia as country of birth. The surname Vlasic is Croatian. Franjo's father Joseph was born in Livno, Bosnia and his mother Iva Badrov was the daughter of Josip and Anica Vodopija. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.64.241.89 (talk) 20:34, 18 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reading the current article, as it exists, it simply says "The Vlasic family had no connection whatsoever with Poland" with no other relevant information. It might as well say "The Vlasic family had no connection whatsoever with Madagascar". There is no reference to the pickles being Polish-style, and no other reference to Poland at all in the entire article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.69.166.230 (talk) 21:24, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV[edit]

Reads like a Horatio Alger story. Not encyclopedic in tone, plays to sentimentality, uses phrases like "saving every dime". Owen 23:04, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

old content was taken from http://www.vlasic.com/About/, with only minor changes. I am cutting out borrowed content, and think the article should probably be made a stub. -dialectric

Croatian vs Polish[edit]

Shouldn't the "Croatian" be changed to "Polish" ? This is what is on the official Vlasic site. -em

The website states, "...Polish immigrant family..." but this doesn't necessarily mean that they cannot be of Croatian descent.ZYXW9876 (talk) 18:58, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but surname Vlasic is totally Croatian surname. There is no Polish surname that even sounds like Vlasic. Official statement on their web site is missleading and wrong.--Pavlemocilac (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, cause it's more cool to be from Poland. Polish community is one of the largiest in U.S. while there is no Vlasic anymore in this company. Off-course there is no Poles with that surname, but alot of Croats (i.e. Blanka Vlasic, one of the best sportsman in the World).

Some info here too. If his name was Franjo... I've never heard of a Pole with that name.

Over the past 70 years the Vlasic name has become synonymous with Polish-style dill pickles. However, the company was founded by a Croatian immigrant in Detroit in the 1920s. Franjo Vlasic began with a creamery in Detroit that eventually grew to be the state’s largest wholesale milk distributorship. As the company grew, it added hams and pickles for the city’s polish community. [1]--Rovoobo Talk 08:49, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This site lists two Franjo Vlasic arrivals for 1912 year. Livino most prob. is Livno.

  1. Vlasic, Franjo 1912 Hungary, Hungary, Batavia
  2. Vlasic, Franjo 1912 Livino, Austria, La Touraine--Rovoobo Talk 09:08, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wal-Mart[edit]

This guy here describes how Vlasic went bankrupt due to predatory business practices by Wal-Mart: http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=985485&cid=25255983

True?

Whoops, actually he gives his source: http://www.larouchepub.com/other/2003/3046wal-mart_pricing.html

I'm not sure I trust that site.

Here is a more reputable source for the bankruptcy in Jan. 2001: http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/77/walmart.html?page=0%2C1 Indigest (talk) 11:55, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is his name related to Vlašić (Bosnian mountain)? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 01:19, 1 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Vlašić is ultimately derived from the Croatian word Vlah: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlach 49.194.121.112 (talk) 12:17, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
