To Bar or Not To Bar[edit]

Have updated the line in the first section about the use of the bar on the logo

Redirect from WEEE[edit]

WEEE is waste electrical and electronic equipment and generically refers to items in this category. WEEE should be diverted to E-waste not the WEEE directive. Doing a quick google, I fail to see any references to "Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment" which do not refer to the directive. I don't believe the term was in use prior to the directive but correct me if I'm wrong. —Pengo 12:37, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I work in the waste management industry in the UK & Ireland. WEEE is the general term for all items of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. You are correct to say it originates from the directive but has also become the blanket term in the industry. Perhaps a disambiguation page would be appropriate --Alex 14:53, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What does the WEEE directive actually mean?[edit]

What I'm wondering is, how is this directive actually implemented? I know we can take WEEE to recycling centres now (in the UK), but what happens to it then, does it go back to the manufacturer or is there some centralised facilities? Do the original manufacturers pay the full cost of that service? Is that what that "dustbin with a cross through" symbol means on newer electrical items? How does it work with imported goods? As far as I know, the WEEE Directive basically means that all WEEE is required to be recycled by law, as opposed to being thrown away in landfill. Local executions of the directive may vary, but where I am (Farnborough, Hampshire) the local waste depots send WEEE off to a local recycling company for sorting, break-down and part/materials reclamation. As far as I know, manufacturers aren't under an obligation to actually collect and recycle their appliances themselves, but I think they might have to make a contribution to the cost of public recycling facilities, which would be collected either via VAT on the item, or their own corporation tax payments. :-)

It is not clear to me at all what should I do with batteries with this symbol without black thick line. They say 0% cadminum, 0% mercury. I heared these are safe to throw away in a standard waste, It will be burned in an incineration station. If that is ok, then the symbol is not ok, because it suggests opposite.

because the original was apparently not grammatically correct.

However Richardtj reverted my change. I'm not knowledgeable about the WEEE Directive or its UK implementation, so I'm happy to accept that my version was factually incorrect. However, Richardtj's version appears to contain a dangling modifier - I do not think that hazardous waste is an EU member state, as is implied by the current wording. Mitch, I've used "As a member state" in the context that i'm refering to the UK, which constitutes a member state of the EU- ergo, under the sub-category "UK implementation".
