launch date in infobox

It's already there, it's just hidden because it's so long. Look down the list 'til you find "Retail availability"; the entry for it should be "Availability by region" with a "[show]" link next to it - click on it and you'll see the list. WiFi

It's already mentioned in the infobox under connectivity, the intro - quote: " The redesigned console is slimmer than the previous Xbox 360 model and features integrated 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, TOSLINK S/PDIF optical audio output..." and in the "Xbox 360 S" section. Another minor edit request...

The fourth paragraph of the article leads with this statement.

"At their E3 presentation on 14 June 2010, Microsoft announced a redesigned Xbox 360 that would ship on the same day."

I've never seen the day/month/year format used anywhere else on this wiki, and it's inconsistent with the other dates listed on the page. Not sure if this needs to be fixed or not, but it bugs me slightly. Thanks. 75.121.231.57 (talk) 17:34, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

It is actually used elsewhere on Wikipedia, but isn't nearly as common as m/d/y (which incidentally bugs the hell outta me and probably a lot of other people from outside the US - it makes no logical sense to put it in that order: d/m/y puts it as sub-sub-division < sub-division < main unit, while m/d/y puts it out of order. Y/m/d makes sense too, although isn't as useful… but anyway, enough rambling). What bugs me/you is fairly irrelevant though - Wikipedia's manual of style accepts both forms, as long as they are used consistently throughout an article, and m/d/y it is the predominant format, I've changed it (as much as it urks me :(, silly Americans with their illogical date formats, non-standard paper sizes, dumbed-down spelling and refusal to go metric like the rest of the civilised world). Main Infobox Image

I can't help but feel that the current image of the 'Slim' Xbox 360 is not representative enough of the console as a whole. I don't know the rules on hardware images but I imagine that the current and latest model would have to be used. However, it is inescapable that the vast majority of consoles being used will surely be the much more iconic and recognisable bulkier model. I suggest using both models in the infobox, similar to the PlayStation 3 article. Sorry if this has been discussed before SaintDaveUK (talk) 23:06, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

As soon as either a) there are two pics (of a "slim" and an old model) are available that can be Photoshoped together or b) a pic of both together is taken and made available freely (creative commons or public domain) that will be done. Unfortunately, most people who contribute pics don't have both consoles, and most of the available pics don't match up well enough to be usable. As soon as I can, I plan to attempt to take a pic of my 360 (Arcade model) in roughly the same position as the slim pictured and Photoshop them together, but it's pretty hard to get decent lighting etc out of a phone camera, so it takes time and/or a decent camera. Mis-type section

Europe

Check again - from underneath the EMEA region figures "Includes UK sales". The reason why it is separate is simply because it makes up more than ⅓ of the EMEA figure (especially considering the UK one is a year behind), and about 10% of the total figure. Also, UK figures are more common than those that cover the EMEA region/Europe/PAL region (even though currently the EMEA one is more up to date, it is more likely that the UK one will be updated). Question about PAL version

Can the PAL version of the Xbox 360 play NTSC disks? From what I understand, many PAL disk-players (namely DVDs) are capable of playing NTSC disks. However, I can not find any information confirming that the Xbox is capable of performing this task, as well.-- OsirisV (talk) 14:03, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

Good question. If you mean PAL/NTSC DVDs (movies etc) then I don't know. Games are definitely region locked though into PAL, NTSC-U and NTSC-J I think (for the most part - there are a few region free ones). Alphathon™ (talk) 15:40, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your help. I was asking because I was unsure on weather I could play NTSC films - I sold my DVD player because recent generations of consoles possess the ability to read them. The difference between films and games doesn't appear to be that much - both are read-only and compressed - due to the existence of the "menu" feature (interactivity). I would assume that were the PAL-version Xbox 360 able to play NTSC games, then I should be able to watch films on them, too.-- OsirisV (talk) 20:25, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
Well, there's really two things to consider with DVD players - format (NTSC or PAL mostly - don't know if SECAM DVDs exist) and regional lockout (for example, North America is region 1, Europe is region 2, Australasia is region 4 etc). Usually there isn't any problem playing NTSC discs on a PAL machine (not so common the other way around though) but usually the players are region locked, so European players can only play region 2 etc. I would assume Xbox 360s are region locked (I know the PS3 is, for both Blu-ray and DVD, even though games have no region coding) so a Euro Xbox (probably) won't play DVDs from the US for example. This is just an educated guess though.
As a side note, please try to keep questions on talk pages relevant to the article (not the topic of the article) - talk pages aren't forums (see WP:NOTAFORUM). I say this because you seem to be asking essentially for tech support/help rather than saying "the article needs info on this".

Backwards Compatibility Clarification

This isn't really clear to me, but in the sidebar it states that backwards compatibility requires a Hard Drive. Does this mean the Xbox 360 Slim 4GB Model is incapable of doing backwards compatibility without the purchase of the additional Hard Drive? Request for minor updates

It really is a small, nit-picky thing; however, there are multiple instances (see Special Edition Consoles section) which refer to events that are now in the past as upcoming in the future. I recommend these be updated in order to keep the page from becoming stagnant in information.

Additionally it might be interesting to note that in addition to the wired headset included with the Halo: Reach SE Console, that a Reach branded wireless headset is also available separately. The special edition Reach branded wireless controllers are also available for separate purchase. Best Selling Game

Has it really? I'd like to see a (reliable) source for that CoD4 figure (i.e. not VG Chartz). Regardless, if you can finde a reliable source that states that a game is now the top seller, we'll be sure to add it in. Bear in mind that it must state that and cannot just be that is has sold over 8.1 million, since we don't know how many Halo has sold since then. Flag sizes AU and NZ

Actually, I think the use of flags is against some policy (something to do with it restricting content to non-blind/vision impaired individuals), so they should probably be removed altogether (along with the other flags of course). In order to prevent ambiguity, the currency symbols could simply be changed to their international equivalents (Aus Dollar = A$, NZ Dollar = NZ$ etc). Of course, there's certainly a chance that Joystiq misreported it, but it's hard to check, since the gamerscore blog, which is their source, no longer exists (MS shut it down, some time last year I think). Total shipping number till 31st of March, 2011

According to MS official Fiscal report, the total shipping (sold-in to retaiers) quantity of XBOX360 is 53.6Million. But in the article, it mentioned only 52.7 million. Please correct this mistake.

OK, the MS source seems good enough, so I'll change it later on (here and on the various other pages that mention sales figures).
Just a couple of tips for the future:
  1. Always put replies at the end of the conversation thread; it makes it easier to follow.
  2. Always sign your posts; just type ~~~~ at the end of the post and Wikipedia will automatically add your name, the time and date (see: WP:SIG)
  3. Don't even bother linking to forums as a source; there's no point as they will almost never (like 99.99% of the time) be acceptable as sources (see: WP:Reliable). If there is a link on the forum thread to what you wish to source, link to that instead.

The Xbox 360 is MS's fourth home console

The very first sentence of this article claims the Xbox 360 to be the "second video game console produced by Microsoft". This is entirely misleading, and mostly nonfactual. While true because Microsoft's first two consoles were not actually manufactured by the company, the term "produced" is incorrect. In fact, Microsoft had "produced" (via the production processing of a number of intermediary companies) two versions of the MSX home game console in the 1980s.

For clarification purposes I suggest either simply changing the word "second" to "fourth", or by tacking on a "modern" in front of "game console". I am not a Wikipedia member and have no interest in registering, so I cannot make this change and the duty therefore falls upon you. Thanks.

I think you might not understand the lack of importance there. It was a consumer/home console which was hugely important in the history of gaming. The fact that MS disables owners from using Office doesn't make the Xbox any less a computer running Windows, used for a variety of home entertainment concerns. Beside that, "home computer" is non-exclusive of the term "game console": the MSX is both. As an example, the PS3 lets users run Linux and it's still a game console. Add one word to the lead before "video game console" - "dedicated" and the point becomes moot. Suggestion to include DirectX specs

Suggestion to include DirectX specs:

I came to the "Xbox"/"Xbox 360" Wiki articles to find out the details of the DirectX history and was disappointed because there's no clear description here. That is odd since the Xbox is based on DirectX graphics technology. That's the entire basis of the Xbox hence, the original working title "DirectX Box," shortened to "XBox."

I would like to suggest a chart explaining what specific DirectX technology came with each XBox console and at what date so people can see the history of DirectX upgrades that came with each console, which is akin to an upgrade in the DirectX graphics technology platform:

  • Original Xbox
  • Xbox 360 Core
  • Xbox 360 Pro / Xbox 360 Premium
  • Xbox 360 Elite
  • Xbox 360 Arcade
  • Xbox 360 Super Elite

The next Xbox console (rumored to be called the Xbox 720 for now) may include DirectX 12 by the time it actually becomes available. It's time for an upgrade to DirectX 12.

Pretty sure that the Original XBox was based off DirectX 8.1 (that's what the Wiki page says). I imagine that all of the 360 consoles run the same thing, no matter what version. Otherwise you'd run into compatibility issues. There's no direct port though, where you can say "this is DirectX. They've changed things to make it suit what they're programming for. Chipset - table additions

In order to prevent an edit war, and to get the input of other editors, I felt I should probably bring this up here. Some recent additions by 209.173.78.109 have added a "chipset" column to the SKU table. I feel this is inappropriate for a number of reasons. First, this data really doesn't relate directly to the SKUs, and belongs in Xbox 360 hardware, not here. Second, is that the data presented is pretty redundant (do we really need to say they are all 3.2 GHz; a sat that doesn't even seem to be sourced, and it isn't even obvious what it's referring to). Third is that it is labelled "chipset", when in fact it appears to be talking about motherboard revisions. Finally, it is poorly sourced (the sources listed don't actually correspond to what they are claiming) and some of the listings are simply false. For example, the Core model was discontinued long before the Jasper motherboard came along, and it is impossible for an Xbox 360 S to have a Xenon motherboard, as it is the wrong size (wouldn't fit in the case) and has the wrong ports etc.

I'm not saying listing what SKUs carry what Mobos is non-notable, but I certainly don't think it belongs in the SKUs table, and certainly not in this form. I would suggest that if it be on Wikipedia at all, it should probably be part of Xbox 360 hardware#Motherboards, as a table of Mobos against SKUs. I have mocked one up below (with the configurations I know off the top of my head, so there are probably mistakes).

Red dot/ring

Please add more details regarding failures.

I'm a former 'computer guy' and worked on hardware from 1973 until I retired. From talking with my nephew and his buddies it seems common knowledge that in XBoxe 360s made before the S model the GPU runs too hot and all of those machines will fail prematurely. By that I mean close to 100% failures before five years time. It would be good to know which models have the problem with an overheated GPU and if anything can be done to extend the life of the machine. As far as I can tell, the only bundles included here are ones that had special hardware, not just various games. For example, the Modern Warfare 2 & 3 bundles have a custom outer shell on the console as well as the games. The Fable 3 + Halo: Reach bundle was just a normal 360 with games included. I would like to edit the section Under NXE because it says the disc must remain in the console, I wish to put in that "If the game is installed if a user has no case on their xbox360 the disc will stop spinning at some point and may then be removed. However this requires opening the console, voiding warranty and opening the disc drive, removing the sticker and taking the magnet off to allow case free disc playing. This allows the User to remove the disc and play without a disc. Or something along those lines.

Unless I'm very much mistaken it can't, or at least the hardware can't. The PS3 supports various types of HDMI-based 3D, but AFAIK all 3D on the 360 is achieved by means of anaglyph (red-cyan) or frame-compatible side-by-side/top-and-bottom rendering, which is dependent only on the game, not the hardware. Strictly speaking, any system that can output a video signal can use these systems (although in practice only HD-capable systems can do so since doing so essentially halves the usable resolution). Origin of name "360"

One thing I did not see in this article was whether "360" in the name of the Xbox 360 has any relevance to this product. Does it refer to something circular or fully rounded in this product series, that wasn't part of the original Xbox? Mentioned in this IGN article. Long story short, they didn't want to call it the Xbox 2 since it sounded old. Xbox 360 was one of the names they came up with and it tested well with focus groups. In order to clarify this, please take a look at Microsoft's Earnings Report. As you can see, as of September 30, 2012 (Q4 2012) Microsoft has sold 68.3 million XBOX 360 units. The 70 million sales figure is their projected sales by the end of this fiscal year (March 2013). That's it, 70 million is just a projection, not the actual LTD sales. Those are merely examples. There is a full list at Xbox LiveXbox 360 applications. We cannot possibly add every single streaming service available in every single country to this article, and there would be little reason to do so when it is listed elsewhere. (Incidentally, I believe the US and UK services specifically were chosen as they are the two largest English-speaking markets.) That said, Netflix is available in the UK now, so a reword may be in order anyway (possibly which removes references to any particular country). On this article, there are two separate sates for the release of the console. The first is listed as November 16, in the infobox. The second is listed as November 22nd, in the launch section. Strange wording

Someone had unexplainedly deleted the opening sentence of the Japan section. This sentence compared the 360 sales to the original Xbox sales and provided the context for the rest of the Japan sales section The removal of it made the section confused and look a bit NPOV. Dashboard Updates

The other day I noticed my 360 icon was in a dif location. It was infact my inbox icon!?! I just realized my 2 or 3 friends in the world will see my inbox icon. Strange, why would I complain? Because my inbox icon should not be everywhere or at two places at once. Why would I want to see my inbox icon in the middle of the screen? Do I really want a japanese girl reading in the middle of my screen whne I want to play a game? Wow, hundreds of gamers will see my inbox icon of a soccer ball, and my action icon while gaming would be on the center of the dashboard. I was totally confused until one day i looked on the top right of the screen to see that inbox marker is my gamer's picture. Oops. I just realized my gamer icon was my inbox icon. Must me more bad karma from building xp with an open registry i guess. Take a psychology class next time microsoft, lol jk. Console support

It is unclear when support for the xbox 360 will end because there are two references which suggest different times. Citation 26 suggests the console will be supported until 2016 but in the section marked "legacy" a different citation which is citation 76 suggests it will be supported until 2017. Certain info is outdated. External storage is no longer limited to 32GB, going up to 2TB. Likewise, with the release of the Xbox 360 E model, the internal hard drive size is 500Gb. Would also suggest adding "(controller)" where 2.4gHz appears in connectivity, since this refers to that, and not WiFi which is, at least for the original model, only available separately. Update removable storage.

The 360 (via online update) is now capable of 2tb over USB. Currently (and for the past who knows how long) it has only read 32gb. This is not the case. SILEeeles (talk) 15:10, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

Initial comments: Overall, there's a solid foundation to the article, however there's a bunch of issues that need addressing that I think are beyond the purview of a GA review process. Starting with some high-level stuff:

  • I find the ordering of elements in the article a bit disjointed. You go through development, release, sales, reception, and then legacy of the console before discussing SKUs or the actual hardware. It seems like a more logical flow would be development, launch, then the details about hardware/software, then recepetion/sales/legacy. Alternatively, Nintendo DSi (the only reasonable FA equivalent from what I can see) has development, launch, sales, and then hardware/software/services before reception/legacy.
      • Ending the article with basically a "controversies"-type section on game development (which mostly covers the private XBL network and legal stuff, and not actually game development) seems like the wrong tack, and this entire section feels like undue weight. If there's more useful detail on game development, include it. Otherwise shorten or merge this, and definitely put it somewhere else.
  • Tense: Since the Xbox 360 is no longer in production, it seems like some stuff should be adjusted to past tense and historical view. If no new peripherals are being release, for example, the lead should say Peripherals such as wireless controllers, [...] or similar instead of Several peripherals have been released, including wireless controllers [...] Likewise you still have software support for the 360 continuing until 2016, but it's 2019. This stuff needs to get updated throughout.
  • Along those lines, the article gives the definite impression it was cobbled together over time rather than feeling like it's been rewritten to appropriately summarize. There are lots of barely-paragraphs or widowed clauses with "On such-and-such date, XXX"-type constructions which feel exhaustive and unnecessary. Give us the broad points. Don't bother giving precise dates if it's not important to know.
    • Following from above, there are sections that are out of date (XNA gives present tense when it was killed years ago) and feel out of proportion to their use (why is XNA its own section versus just being mentioned with the other games?) Why is Smartglass still described as Xbox SmartGlass is one of the newer features? Likewise the XBL Marketplace section still suggests you have to use Microsoft points to buy stuff when that hasn't been the case for years now. It looks like fair chunks of the article are unchanged since 2010.
  • The hardware section is remarkably spare and an example where too much info has been siphoned off to subpages. It's also not presented well (we get mentions of the Xbox Slim and E models before they're discussed in depth a few subsections later.)
  • Given that there's a separate article about 360 retail configs, the exhaustive list of price and SKUs for only the US seems like it shouldn't belong in this article.
  • Why does the sales section only count up to 80 million worldwide sales when the 84 million number is given elsewhere?
  • There's a bunch of refs in the lead, which generally shouldn't be there. More of an issue, some of that material is not in the body of the article (the lead has references that talk about the 360 as a multimedia console, for instance, that aren't in the reception section.)
  • The AV output section should really be converted into prose and fully sourced (which leads to....)
  • the retail charge seems erroneous, as it doesn't have the Xbox 360 E mentioned at all.
  • References:
    • I've marked a few areas that clearly need citations, but it needs a thorough recheck.
    • There are a bunch of stale links/redirects that need to be sorted. Ideally all the references should be archived.
    • Likewise, I did spot-checks for sources based on this revision and found issues throughout, some examples given below:
      • Ref92 does not support all of this: At launch, the Xbox 360 was available in two configurations: the "Xbox 360" package (unofficially known as the 20 GB Pro or Premium), priced at US$399 or GB£279.99, and the "Xbox 360 Core", priced at US$299 and GB£209.99. The original shipment of the Xbox 360 version included a cut-down version of the Media Remote as a promotion. The Elite package was launched later at US$479. The "Xbox 360 Core" was replaced by the "Xbox 360 Arcade" in October 2007
      • Ref112 does not support: The Xbox 360 launched with 14 games in North America and 13 in Europe.
      • Ref131 does not support all of this: The NXE also provides many new features. Users can now install games from disc to the hard drive to play them with reduced load time and less disc drive noise, but each game's disc must remain in the system in order to run. A new, built-in Community system allows the creation of digitized Avatars that can be used for multiple activities, such as sharing photos or playing Arcade games like 1 vs. 100. The update was released on November 19, 2008.
      • Ref152 does not support all of this: A Live Free account does not generally support multiplayer gaming; however, some games that have rather limited online functions already, (such as Viva Piñata) or games that feature their own subscription service (e.g. EA Sports games) can be played with a Free account. Xbox Live also supports voice the latter a feature possible with the Xbox Live Vision
  • Images look fine.

Given the systemic issues, I'm failing the article rather than hold indefinitely for substantial improvements. Ideally it's going to need a top-down rewrite and recheck for sourcing. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 17:32, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

Red light on newer Xbox model

This is incorrect. Even the article on the link says the light will SWITCH from the green to red. So the hardware failure is a solid red light. When it flashes green-red-green-red-..., it is a different "christmas light" error which is related to a NAND memory data being in the manufacturing mode (this manufacturing christmas error was shown by 2 red 2 green alternating lights on original Xbox 360 consoles). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.174.203.64 (talk) 16:23, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Xbox 360 E Hardware

This article says that the E versions of the console have no AV output. However, my own Xbox 360 E (that I got in 2013) does have AV output using an 3.5mm audio socket. XBox 360 E

I looked up the E version of this console (the version from 2013), and it does still have the analog A/V connector but it’s the size of a headphone jack instead of the teeth-size.

Proof 1 - Look closely at the fourth picture of this listing.

Proof 2 - These are Composite cables. They are the only analog video/audio cables that the E version uses.
