How about enabling the use of the hyphenated name "access-date" for a parameter, in addition to "accessdate", as has been done with (most?) other 'cite' templates? A similar change for "entry-date" might be considered as well. —ADavidB 03:34, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Error message on the first line[edit]

Dear fellow editors,
I consulted this template for the first time today, and noticed that the very first line has an error message, in red, about the "|id=" parameter. Could someone please explain why it’s there, and might this be something that needs to be fixed? I’ve not seen this at the top of a template before and it seems odd. Thank you.

italicization[edit]

Because Geographic Names Information System (a gazetteer or geographical dictionary) is the work of United States Geological Survey which is the publisher. In cs1 ({{cite gnis}} is a wrapper template that uses {{cite web}}, a cs1 template), the source's 'work' is italicized.

Given that gnis is a gazetteer, {{cite web}} is probably not quite the correct template to be used here. Instead, this template should probably use {{cite dictionary}} (a redirect to {{cite encyclopedia}}), |entry=, and |dictionary=Geographic Names Information System.

The testcases show a mismatch between the live and sandbox renderings because of differences in the html output and consequent differences in the citation metadata. For example, each cs1|2 is rendered in <cite>...</cite> tags with different attributes:

USGS update[edit]
