I know how to write, and how to cite, but a lot of the Wikipedia knowledge is material I don't know. Infoboxes? What a great idea! Of course I've seen them on Wikipedia pages, but never thought much about them, nor ever edited one. I think I may have over-cited the article a bit, but I read legal and academic journal articles which are full of cites, so am used to it. I feel badly when I see uncited material in WP, though, someone took the time to write something but we can't verify it... About the NRHP, it was mentioned several times so I feel confident it is true, and it had a backstory, so it seems to be true. I tried to find the Nobska on the NRHP, but indeed as you point out since it/she doesn't exist any more, the ship is not listed. (I am wondering if WP has a convention for feminizing the pronoun of ships....) I'll check out the Elkman.net site. Yeah I'm trying to not be overly possessive since that is not how WP works, but I am very curious to see if people look at the new page and what they do when they do. You cleaned it up, two people rated it and added it to projects, another commented on my talk page, another pointed out there are too many cites a few times on the Nobska talk page. You've been cited[edit]

The Spurgeon Series 1855 & 1856: Unabridged Sermons In Modern Language cites a userspace page you started, http://en.wikipedia.org/User:Maralia/SS_Arctic ,rather than the article space article on theSS Arctic. I discovered this when I was reviewing the deletion of the article on the SS Vesta.

Incidentally, I requested a deletion review on the SS Vesta.

I saw the ships userbox on your user page. Perhaps you have an opinion on how much weight should be given to the essay WP:Notability (vehicles) in discussions over deleting articles on ships?

The essay argues we should only have articles on exceptional individual "vehicles", and that, usually, anything meaningful should go in the article on the vehicle's class.

I can see some sense behind applying the advice in this essay to cars, trucks, bicycles, carts, trains -- even airplanes. But it seems to me bo be both contrary to our usual practice with ship, and contrary to what makes sense.

Fighter aircraft and airliners can be as expensive as ships, or even more expensive. But they are also more standardized than ships, and they undertake different kinds of missions. Fighters almost always fly in squadrons with identical fighters. Airliners share routes with identical airliners. Whereas naval vessels, coast guard vessels, fishery and environmental patrol vessels, tramp freighters, and many other kinds of ships normally proceed alone, on open ended voyages, that may not be repeated.

Do you think it would make sense to change that essay so it explicitly excludes ships from its advice?

Good grief! It's bad enough to cite Wikipedia in the first place, but citing a subpage in my userspace?! Astonishing.

I would not choose to argue the deletion of SS Vesta; if I recall correctly, it was a nondescript merchant ship routinely used to carry men and supplies to a far-flung fishing station. While it did gain a certain notoriety as a result of the Arctic incident, a redirect is surely sufficient.

As to the question of ship notability in general, I'm afraid I have been out of the loop, wiki-wise, for too long to have much to contribute to the conversation. For what it's worth, in 2007–2008 I revamped the WP:SHIPS project page and created Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships/sidebar, which was intended to list all relevant guidance. The notability essay you mention is not listed therein, nor do I recall ever being aware of its existence. That being said, however, I find the requirements listed in Wikipedia:Notability (vehicles)#"Individual vehicles" to be quite reasonable. (The scare quotes in that essay, though, are inexcusable.)

Thanks for letting me know about Vesta, and about the cite. I really must get off my duff and rewrite Arctic someday. It's a sensational story.

Please accept a belated thank you for the well wishes upon my retirement as FAC delegate this year, and apologies for the false alarm of my first—and hopefully last—retirement; the well wishes extended me were most kind, but I decided to return, re-committed, when another blocked sock was revealed as one of the factors aggravating the FA pages this year.

Maintaining standards in featured content requires vigilance, dedication and knowledge of people like you, who are needed; reviews are always welcome at FAC, FAR and TFA requests. Somehow, somehow we never ever seem to do nothin' completely nice and easy, but here's hoping that 2013 will see a peaceful road ahead and a return to the quality and comaraderie that defines the FA process, with the help of many dedicated Wikipedians!

Thanks; it's nice to be appreciated. The closing work itself wasn't too painful—just a few hours of boredom—but I found a few opportunities for process improvement along the way. (Only the first one is really important to FAC, but I'm listing all three here so I have a reference point for follow-up.)

First I documented the FAC/FAR closing process as best I could. I hope GimmeBot returns soon, but a bot owner has offered to write a backup/replacement so I'm trying to help cover our bases.
Next I tackled a frequent failure point in {{ArticleHistory}}: when the template attempts to lookup a GA topic name, it doesn't always get a result, causing an ArticleHistory error. This was complicated to research and rewrite because I had to make sure that none of the four other templates that use the same lookup table would be adversely affected by changes. I proposed a rewrite here.
Last of all, I found a few minor errors in the ArticleHistory code, and proposed a solution.

I probably already spent as much time on each one of these issues as it took me to do all the closings, but they had to be addressed eventually. Hoping to get them all resolved soon, to reduce the administrative demands of the closing process. Maralia (talk) 18:14, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

What I am is exceedingly stubborn! Also tired of fixing ArticleHistory errors. And eminently distractible: let's not forget how I told you two sections above this that I was committed to finishing my open projects before attacking anything else...oops.

The audience for those template pages is quite small, so it may take a little time before my talk page notices garner attention. This is no big deal, as neither of those proposed changes is particularly urgent. If they fail to catch anyone's eye there after a while, I will approach a few folks who I know are already familiar with the specific templates—going to VPT would require asking some poor sod to learn the ArticleHistory code, and I'd rather not have that on my conscience :) Maralia (talk) 21:39, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

A thanks from me too. I didn't realise you were doing this manually until I popped over to Gimmis page to see what was happening to Gimmebot. If it is possible could you add the review process into this bots function. I left a request at User talk:Gimmetrow#Update the article history following Good article reassessments a few months ago. It is not a major as GARs are much less common than GANs, but it might be easier to code it all at once. We can adapt the closing instructions to the bot so don't worry about adhering to them too closely. If it is too tricky don't worry about it, we have survived for years now doing it manually.
