Flora and Fauna[edit]

Hi, this is Lenticel. In my opinion, I think flora or fauna articles should be created scientific names as titles. English names and local names could then be redirected to that page. You could also add the common names and that flora/fauna's uses (as long as you have references and do not disrupt the flow of the article) in existing articles. A good place to start creating flora and fauna articles should be the list of Bohol flora and fauna. There are many red links (articles needed to be created) found there. You might also look at my user page for flora and fauna articles that I created. They are not exactly beautiful prose but it's a start. Oh, before I forget be sure to read this in case you are not familiar with taxoboxes. ---Lenticel 04:41, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there! Thank you for the note. It was very instructive. Actually, "adding the common names and that flora/fauna's uses in existing articles" is precisely what I want to do, perhaps adding sections at the bottom of the page indicating the local name and the use or superstition attached to it. The reason I'm not doing this yet is that I dont have research materials yet.

I am glad to note you created a page for Sus philippensis! I was looking for information on it last year. I noticed, however, that the link to it from "Pig" is still red. I would have edited that page to see what was wrong, but the page is protected from editing. I want to learn how to get around to making the correction on an edited page soon, but I don't have time right now. Perhaps you might want to do it yourself? I couldn't find Sus philippensis because I was simply unaware of what a baboy ramo was called. I thus searched for it by looking for "Sus", which did not eventually lead me to Sus Philippinensis at the time.Alternativity 02:09, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed the pig article link. Some articles just attract vandalism like flies so they semi-protect it. ---Lenticel 03:59, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I saw this on your user page so I created it. I already created the scientific part but I don't know if I could make its historical significance. Judging by your userpage, I think you are good with Philippine history so I request for your help. The other red-links in your page has little or no online references so I think I'll be of little help for you there.--Lenticel 02:30, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Just waiting for some aspects of life to settle down before I get back to work on entries. I'm not sure about the sources for Nilad, but I will certainly look into it. Thanks! Alternativity 12:50, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody requested that Philippine culture be included in article. I just thought that you could help--Lenticel (talk) 05:27, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh. That will require quite some effort, as I haven't begun exploring agricultural practices yet. But I'll get right to it. Thanks for the heads up. Alternativity 16:23, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Probably you'll get a barnstar if the tambayan accepts my proposal. Anyways its preferable that you make start class articles (longer and more informative than stub class). --Lenticel (talk) 02:15, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. :-D Hehe. Is there a guide to article classes? I tend to start everything at Stub class to get something of an immunity from notability until I can shore up my articles with more sources. hehe. Takes me a while to make articles eh. :-S Alternativity 12:43, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is a rough scale: Category:Wikipedia 1.0 assessments, but might be helpful. Simply put this in the search box and you should go to the category. Don't worry about making articles, I myself haven't made an article better than a Start Class.--Lenticel (talk) 14:01, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Lenticel. So far I count four Start Class articles and Ten Stub class articles... I think. :-) The Lineup is on my main user page. :-D (Hehe. Eager for a Barnstar :-D )

Noticed the merge debate was open. Voted against. I put a new field tag above your post so everything for the vote was grouped together. Didn't touch your post but wanted to let you know about it. You might want to put your vote at the front in bold, so it's more easily noted. Although it looks like the merge has been forgotten by the proposer.Horrorshowj 21:47, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar?[edit]

If you make at least five Philippine-related Start Class articles (not counting those you already made ok?), I'll give you a barnstar.

Just to be fair, I'll list the redlinks of some of the easy ones here.

You can tell me in my talk page if you are finished. Happy editing!--Lenticel (talk) 04:14, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Working on it!
Upgraded to Start Class
Just started, at Stub Class

Put the articles in categories ok? Keep up the good work! you are 1.5 out of 5--Lenticel (talk) 14:29, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just remember to assert the notability of your articles ok? Sayang naman kung ma-AFD lang. Anyways you are halfway through --Lenticel (talk) 16:16, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hehe. Yeah. I was a bit fearful of that, but I do recall Kunawicz having influence similar to what is currently enjoyed by Zafra at one point, although Zafra's publication and awards list is certainly longer. Her influence on the goth and alternative subcultures in the Philippines are certainly more significant than, say, Star Circle Quest alumni on the mainstream. I dont know how to make that clearer in the article, though, as her influence came at a time when both subcultures were just starting out. Alternative is obviously a large subculture now, although goth is still just growing here.
As for the Quebral stub, I'm taking my time on Quebral because a lot of people know enough about her capabilities as a writer and I do want to make something somewhat deserving of my topic. (Not to mention she was always very nice to me as a relative newcomer to the field. Hehe.)

3.5, a little bit more. BTW, Can you create Tampo for your last article? It is not required for the barnstar, it's just a very interesting Filipino trait. However, I don't know much about culture and the internet isn't quite a help on the subject. Anyways if you made the article you'll not only help curious Filipinos but hapless foreigners that have Filipina wives as well. --Lenticel (talk) 01:50, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Er... hehe. That's one of the most difficult-to-document topics I can think of! hahaha. Even "Sama ng Loob" has more references. I'm afraid that one will take a LOT of time first, and even then might not make it to start class. But I do promise to work on it. Not necessarily the fifth article, though - that's saying "i'll see what i can do."Alternativity 10:16, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Er ... I spoke too soon, apparently there IS quite some material out there! :-D Hehe. I was thinking of scholarly journals, but apparently there's a lot of popular-level materiel on Tampo out there. hhehe. Article out within the next 72 hours. :-D Alternativity 10:40, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hehe... Tampo was a "bonus" article so I'll award you this early.

Don't forget to upgrade your other articles to Start-Class though. If you want to put the barnstar in your user page, just copy (not cut) the whole thing and paste it there--Lenticel (talk) 05:01, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Philippine Barnstar
Alternativity, I award you this Philippine Barnstar for your contributions on Filipino culture. --Lenticel (talk) 05:01, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WOW! That was certainly unexpected! :-D Yup. tonight I have to pore through my readings for references to the Bahag and Umalohokan articles. And then there are just so many articles I have to work on, along with a proposal for revamping the organization of Philippine Mythology and related articles. After the two stubs mentioned above, i may slow down a bit, but be assured I'm eagerly working on the next batch of articles. :-D (Besides, I AM eager to earn another barnstar. hehehe.)

Hi, Alternativity. Images for your article are in-progress (with a couple already placed). Just want to request you to please kindly provide more description for manaul and ekek. I have no access to a Filipiniana library at the moment, descriptions or on-line sources (which you can also add to the article itself) will help me assist you in this endeavor and specialty of yours. (Lenticel is also working on the images). Thanks. - Dragonbite 01:40, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do my best. I wasnt the one who added these two originally, but I will comb my sources for any references, and go on an extensive net search. Thanks! :-D Alternativity 01:44, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I couldn't find anything on Ek-ek, but I did find out that the Manaul has competition - namely the tigmamanukan (whose descriptions match the Philippine Fairy Bluebird), which is the Tagalog version, and the raven. This is my first time searching for the Manaul, but I'll look into my sources for Tigmamanukan again. Alternativity 01:58, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Philippine Mythology[edit]

Hi, I just saw your post. Although we could definitely benefit from the Wikiproject, it might not last that long. These projects require a lot of maintenance and that wouldn't be too easy with such a few members (even if I join). My suggestion is to create a Feature article or even a Good Article out of one of the target mythological articles (Of your own choosing). That way, we can show that the Wikiproject is determined to pursue its goals. This might encourage other editors to participate.

PS, you should reward other editors that help you once in a while, para ganahan naman.--Lenticel (talk) 03:33, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I spent time around a bunch of Wikiprojects and realized what enormous work is involved, nga. So I guess you're right. What I'm really looking for is a venue for discussing Philippine Mythology articles systematically and as a whole, not as individual articles, so the entire thing can have a greater sense of cohesion (and also, discuss the source material as well, since the sources dont agree all the time), and to identify priority articles for work - in other words to organize the stuff the way a wikiproject does. I'm, thinking maybe I can create a subpage specifically for such a discussion? That way a rewards system could also be worked out. :-D Thoughts?

Maybe you could experiment by making a sub page about your project in your user page. Ask people to comment on it then improve that sub-page. Maybe then you could get the feel of a wikiproject then. However, nothing beats a FA or GA article to encourage other people to participate.

PS Care to comment on my newest stub, Kumakatok. I only found one source material for it but I'm pretty sure they are "real"--Lenticel (talk) 09:58, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Monster in the Jar[edit]

Have you heard of the Halimaw sa Banga? I'm not sure if its a legendary creature (not found in my sources) or simply a movie monster (I think it was a Shake, Rattle and Roll movie)

Oh by the way, can you look up references for Tiyanak? I'll be reporting to my first job tomorrow (yay!) so I might not be able to go to the library for research purposes.--Lenticel (talk) 07:17, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. I found three Tianac references, but in the same book. One general tagalog, one pampango, and another tagalog one from Mindoro. I'll work on integrating them by tomorrow. :-D As for the monster-in the jar, I'm not certain there's an actual set of legends regarding that - perhaps one or two here and there. I'll look around. I can confirm that there are no prehispanic monster-in-a-jar legends in my sources, though.Alternativity 09:16, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Dragonbite told me that article is being considered for DYK. I hope you could add your refs soon. DYK's are reserved for young articles only (about 4-5 days old). It might not be as good as GA or FA but it has a lot of impact and would show people that we are serious in improving Philippine mythology articles. I want to help but my mind is overloaded with Philippine law books and guides that I was required to read for my job. Maybe I'll recover after this week and hopefully adjust my Wiki contributions to my work schedule. --Lenticel (talk) 10:11, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just added three references, with the last once citing two stories. I did some reorganizing at the top level too - I wonder if you could look it through and see if it's okay? Alternativity 17:01, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is a lot better now and hopefully give us more chance to net that award. Thanks for the contribs! --Lenticel (talk) 19:21, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Friendster (gasp!) and Sci-Fi[edit]

Hey there! I don't check my Talk page often these days so I was surprised to get a message. I usually check out other people's profiles on Friendster if they view mine. I read sci fi on my own though. The only local SFF community I'm part of is Tolkien Philippines, and even there I haven't participated in two years. :D --Noelle De Guzman (talk) 06:33, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I nominated this article for DYK. If you could improve the article (non-copyrighted images will be nice) within 3 days, then the chance that it will get nominated is high. Fix my hook if you can too.--Lenticel (talk) 08:25, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok simply fatten the article if you can if you can't find an image. Also, you could also request someone from the Tambayan to help you with this (I think User:TheCoffee or User:seav can help). You or they can use Google Earth (LandSat?, I can't help you with this one) to create an image like in Lake Lanao. The coordinates are (Latitude: 14° 25' 0 N, Longitude: 121° 27' 0 E).

You can create your own infobox by copying the text and entering values found in Template:Infobox River.

As for the hook, follow the "nominate" link I posted earlier. The hook should rouse interest from the reader for them to read your article. My hook says:

...that Siniloan River is known by tourists for its five waterfalls and clear and easily accesible headwaters?

You can fix that in T:TDYK but keep it short and interesting.--Lenticel (talk) 22:12, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Napindan Channel/River vs. Pasig River[edit]

I get conflicting sources saying either that Napindan is just the upper portion of Pasig River or that Pasig River only starts where Napindan and Marikina River meet. Is there any official source for any of these? Who's the best authority to say what's the status of Napindan vis-a-vis Pasig River? --seav 11:16, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot Alternativity[edit]

OMG! I almost out of words! Thanks a lot Alternativity for awarding me this The Defender of the Wiki Barnstar award for the Philippine general election, 2010 article. I'm just a 17-year old Mar Roxas for President in 2010 kid trying to defend the neutrality of the article. I really hate these anonymous persons who really insist on posting the so-called presidentiables. They're cowards! I mean, they're the old 'makina' and we are the rightful 'preno'. BTW, I would also continue in keeping Philippine politics-related articles neutral and encyclopedic as shall I say, a "terms and conditions" of the award. Hehehe! Basta, I'm doing this for the benefit of all and not those who insist on making this online encyclopedia an editorial section of the newspaper. -- Kevin Ray (talk) 13:40, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Haha. To be honest, I had to hesitate there for a while because your support for Roxas was so out in the open, so I went to see all your posts and concluded that you were, indeed, working for the maintaining the neutrality of the post. I certainly hope it encourages you to maintain the effort to keep articles neutral - very difficult in Philippine politics. Hehe.
On a completely different note, I'd like to work on introducing sections on legislative performance in the wikis of the senators. In spite of the accusations flying around in talk:Philippine general election, 2010, I do believe that Wikipedia will be an important source of information for voters in 2010, and I am certainly interested in making as much neutral information available as possible - starting with legislative voting histories. Are you up to it? I want to start with the current (14th) Senate, compiling data on who authored what bills and who voted in favor or against them, and who abstained. I'd like to put this in the senators' wikis as a section listing their voting, and I'd like to start with Mar Roxas, Dick Gordon, Ping Lacson, Manny Villar, Chiz Escudero and Jinggoy Estrada - in other words, Presidentiables. Could you help me perhaps by beginning work on the 13th senate? Or perhaps let's wait until I can come up with the Mar Roxas section. You'll have a clearer idea of what I have in mind. :-D Alternativity (talk) 14:04, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, jimfbleak. The truth is, if I had more time, I really wanted to tidy that article up a lot more, but I only had a short time to do it. But, as it struck me that not having an article for Lakan is probably not a good idea, I went ahead and did it as fast as I could. BorgQueen (talk) 03:08, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IMO, the whole claim of Chinese origination is based on the fact that the same character [宋] that is the name of the Song Dynasty was used several hundred years later to phonetically transcribe the name Luzon into Chinese characters [呂宋]. As you probably know, 呂 originally meant backbone, but has fallen into disuse. The two characters together are meaningless, and are quite obviously used as a transliteration to record the sound 'Luzon'.

I think you should make some good faith effort to locate this supposed 'Pangilinan, et al' article, and then delete the claim based on it if you cannot find anything. The book 東西洋考 (lit. East West Oceans Investigations) was written in the Ming Dynasty to record the trade relations with foreign countries. AFAIK, it doesn't have anything about 呂宋 being founded by 宋 dynasty refugees. However, if a specific page in the book can be pointed to, I can ask my wife to check it. If someone wants to defend the rather extraordinary claim made on the page, I think they bear the responsibility to provide the evidence. lk (talk) 06:45, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The WikiProject Novels Newsletter - October 2008[edit]

  • Newsletter delivery by xenobot 13:03, 5 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Carmen Guerrero Nakpil, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://rizal.lib.admu.edu.ph/aliww/pmb_carmen_guerrero_nakpil.htm. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 17:56, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is embarrasing, and a first time for me. Unfortunately, I was working off a single source to create a stub, and I suppose there wasn't enough ways to alter that text to the satisfaction of the bot, given it was masses of lists of names and titles. (Either that or the fact that some of the phrases from the original site I also forgot to completely change, and that too was enough to trigger the bot.) Mea Culpa, either way, but I'm pleading good faith, thinking the article was sufficiently different from its only source to not be copy vio. The bot disagrees with me, and I dont want to disagree with the bot. I'm reducing this to a very very very small stub until I can write a substantial article which can never be mistaken for a copyvio. -- Alternativity (talk) 18:12, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
