Invitation to help assess Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods

Hi. I am inviting members of some WikiProjects to take part in evaluating their projects in order to help the Wikimedia Foundation better understand such projects from the inside, to encourage reflection on best practices, and to compile a list of best practices as recommended by a number of projects. I am contacting you because you are listed as an active member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods. Having witnessed that project's work in the past in my volunteer capacity, I'd very much like to include it. I hope that you will have time and interest in participating. As much or as little as you would like to supply would be gratefully received. The assessment questions are posted at Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods/Self-assessment. I will myself steer clear of the page until after any discussion seems to have become dormant, at which point I will ask questions to make sure that I am developing a good overview of opinions. Thanks. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 12:59, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Nomination of List of buses for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article List of buses is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of buses until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. SchuminWeb (Talk) 13:41, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Arguments to avoid

You may want to review Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in deletion discussions at your convenience, paying close attention to WP:ITSUSEFUL. :) Viriditas (talk) 19:53, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Ahh, Wise One. Good point. "How about: It's useful because visitors are able to compare attributes of various bus brands, such as year of manufacture, country of origin, etc." Is that an improvement?
Funny you point this out. I was just about to post on list of buses talk that maybe a table isn't such a good plan. I didn't realize that there are lots and lots of buses. I thought maybe a couple of dozen, tops. :) No table, no need for the list, right? Or maybe like List of car brands, name and year. I don't know.
I do know that there are really fanatical bus people out there who will love the table. There's something about buses and trains. Some folks are really into them. What do you think? :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 20:00, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
I just commented over at the AfD. SchuminWeb nominated the list for deletion against the best practice of WP:NOTDUP: "arguing that a Category or List is duplicative of the other in a deletion debate is not a valid reason for deletion and should be avoided." As the second most active contributor to the navigational template, SchuminWeb "should not compete against [other editors] in a destructive manner, such as by nominating the complementary work of their colleagues to be deleted just because they overlap." Viriditas (talk) 20:04, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Good comment at the AfD. I encountered the same "overlap is not bad" argument when preparing the first navboxes I made. In this case, the list and the navbox are really two different things, so I don't see why he objects.
So, are my additional comments at AfD an improvement? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 20:12, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
He objects because he is a primary contributor of a competing template.[1] This is why WP:CLN says "Developers of these redundant systems should not compete against each other in a destructive manner, such as by nominating the complementary work of their colleagues to be deleted just because they overlap." Your additional comments are great. Viriditas (talk) 00:55, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Well, I find that difficult to understand because he's an admin, and as such should know the guidelines and see that the navbox is about something different. Maybe he will withdraw the AfD. I can't see it ending in delete, although it may eventually be moved to List of bus brands or something. Maybe I'll drop him a line. He seems like a nice fellow.
Thanks once again for the guidance. I would really be quite lost without you. My problem is that I've a head like a sieve when it comes to guidelines. I rely on common sense. Mostly that works out. Then again, "They mostly come at night.....mostly." Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:28, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Common sense rules the day. The only reason we even use policies and guidelines is to fill in the holes where people lack common sense. In other words, know and understand the policies and guidelines as best as you can, but if you are relying on common sense, you are welcome to ignore all rules because policy and guidelines are really, at their core, supposed to reflect common sense. Whenever I see an intractable problem, it becomes obvious that one or more editors lacks common sense. When discussion fails, we appeal to policy and guidelines. When that fails, we appeal to consensus. When that fails, we go to dispute resolution. As for admins, they are people too, and for the most part, they specialize in one or two areas. The community (like the real world) does not encourage or recognize generalists, and tends to nominate specialists. This means, essentially, that most admins are very good in only one area, so this isn't difficult to understand, it is a social/cultural phenomenon. If I were you, I would continue working on improving the list. Write a lead, consult with the bus project, keep getting more input like you are on the talk page. Discussion is important, but so is research and development. The best way to save an article in AfD is to listen to the criticism, meet it, and improve the article. Make note of your improvement in the AfD and the closer will recognize your efforts. Viriditas (talk) 01:44, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
You see, this is why you should be in charge. When I asked why you don't want to be an admin, you cleverly, simply, didn't answer. Rather like Harvey Korman at the end of Blazing Saddles. You just slipped out. :)
Now, according to your reasoning about using common sense: I'm a genius, and anyone at arbitration should be in a special home for challenged Wikipedians.
I will take your sound advice about the bus thing. Geez. First wrestling, then a play, and now buses. Not my cup of tea at all. I still have the superclusters to expand. Get it? Expand? Space? Er...ok. But seriously, next to Universe, Hercules Superclusters may be the biggest article on Wikipedia. Huge! It's width is actually measured in "Pavarottis"! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:11, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
You are a genius. I first became aware of this when I saw what you were trying to do with your user page. In many ways, your user page represents a prototype for the "holy grail" of interface design, the zooming user interface, which frankly, nobody is doing anything about. Viriditas (talk) 02:50, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
I am? Thank you. Ok, I'll give you fifteen bucks if you tell that to my parents. Deeds don't impress them. They need testimonials. Perhaps I can get them committed as "mad". I wonder if that means a lot of annoying paperwork. I'll look into it.
As for my userpage, it's that tiny tool that's cool. But really, the reason my page looks the way it does, is because I can't bear to have anything that is mass produced. When I was a kid, I saw on TV, James Burke (I think) say: "Look in your pockets. Everything you have is one of millions of copies exactly the same." Ever since then, I've had an aversion to such things, and I have a deep appreciation for unique objects. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:03, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Qwyrxian: Of course you know I don't think you should be "in a special home for challenged Wikipedians". I know you got drawn into it. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:30, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
Oh, sometimes I wouldn't mind such a home...I could rest easily, maybe catch up on my reading, etc. Alas, I find myself drawn to some areas of WP that are now and always will be in conflict (so long as the subjects they are about are a part of real-world conflict). Plus, I meet interesting people that way--as I recall, you and I met trying to handle some disruption at Dog meat.... But, of course, no offense taken--I will certainly agree that avoiding ArbCom is certainly a very very good plan for almost everyone...several editors have accused me of some pretty unpleasant things...and I just have to trust that Arbcom sees where the actual disruption is coming from. Qwyrxian (talk) 05:17, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

For your parents

Per your request, this is for your parents. You are now a certified genius! :) Viriditas (talk) 10:21, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Navbox for gastropods

Hi Anna, I am still out in CA (for an extra week because of a knee injury) and still mulling over the idea of a gastropods navbox. I still do like the idea of a simple one with just the major clades in it. I think it would be really cool to have that one, even if we only used it on the 41 major clades articles. Best to you, oh talented one! Invertzoo (talk) 21:56, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

I will put something together. By the way, someone ate the clam picture in the edibles navbox. Also, What of the seashell template? Anything's better than salmon. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 22:50, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
You are very kind, but please take your time Anna if you are busy in RL. I confess it was me that ate those clams! Until we can get hold of a prettier image of a dish of cooked clams, for now I think those river nerites look rather beautiful in their white bowl, especially at thumbnail size.
As for the seashell template, I actually couldn't work out which numbers you are supposed to put in for the colors. I do think a pale apricot might be good since that color is called "Seashell", but if it comes out as bandage beige it's not too great! And if you think that pale yellow is a better choice, we could go with that, whatever looks tasteful and low key. Unfortunately I don't have too much time to play around because I can't get WiFi reception in our motel room, only out in the courtyard here. It's some distance from the door to our room and so it is hard for me to limp out here with my crutches. As a result I don't spend as much time on Wp as I would like to right now, even though I can't do anything else really! Invertzoo (talk) 22:40, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm so sorry to hear about your knee. I hope it gets back to normal soon.
I know you ate my plate of clams. But somebody else ate your bowl of nerites. Now the template is molluskless (which is more fun to say than "wasps").
To find out what colour goes with the name at List of colors or a colour navbox, you can click edit in a separate tab or click the color name itself to find the HEX number.
I've given up on pinks and oranges. I spent a lot of time trying those, and they just ended up band-aid colour. I'm afraid I'll have to leave that up to you. I still prefer the yellows because they can be pale, and are the colour of sand. But that's just me, and I will accept anything quite happily.
All the best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:03, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Anna! I think pale yellow or sand color would be just fine for the seashell template. Fee free to just put it in if you can be bothered to. All the best, Invertzoo (talk) 23:29, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

How about Apricot and Lemon chiffon as listed under Yellow on this page? But I still don't understand where you find the HEX number for those. Duh.... Maybe my sprained knee is affecting my brain! Invertzoo (talk) 20:50, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Why did someone remove Shiny and safe! What more do you want from a bus?--213.107.74.132 (talk) 12:37, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Because it was unencyclopedic. Would you expect to read an Encyclopedia Britannica article that said that? Certainly not.
They also removed comments you made from the article talk. I didn't quite agree with that, but I can understand it completely. I strongly suggest that you follow other editors' manner of conduct. Then you will be taken more seriously. Best wishes. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:44, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Ah. I see. I thought you were referring to the comments you made that were removed from talk. Yes. I did write "Shiny and safe! What more do you want in a bus?" But that was in a sample table at the talk page. You added "Shiny and safe! What more do you want in a bus?" to the article. Do you see the difference? Wenzhou Medical College

Anna you have no idea about our company and our operations. We are not simply the recruitment agents. We also provide scholarships to student intending to study in Chinese Universities. Recruitment departments of most of universities worldwide are commercial entities. I really dont have patience of explaining you. Please discuss with other editors about what you are doing now. They may give you a neutral opinion. This year around 150 international students are joining Wenzhou Medical College and about 50% students are recruited by us. No one can apply directly to Wenzhou Medical College. All applicant should go through selection process through us. We hold seminars, entry tests, spot admissions etc etc...Do you think a fraudulent company can have Govt scholarships quota, and cooperation with top public universities of China? Wmc.cosmo (talk) 17:14, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

  • You are using Wikipedia to promote your organization. Your addition of the wzmu.net watermarked images is evidence of that.
  • Your website is deceptive as it hides the links to bestcolleges and because it appears as the official university website.
  • Another editor contends that your site is not credible.
So, the onus is upon you, if you have the patience, to demonstrate the legitimacy of this website, and the need for its inclusion into Wikipedia articles. You need to demonstrate this to the Wikipedia community, and get consensus. Until then, please do not add the following websites (or any other sites that link to them):
  • jutcm.com
  • wzmu.net
  • bestcollegeschina.com
  • wenzhouuniversity.com
Thank you, and have an educational day. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 17:31, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

At http://www.wzmc.edu.cn/en/, the offical site, an email "wzmc.net" is given. No mention of your similar "wzmu.net". If your site is the "offical partner", then why not just ask the university to add your website to their official website? That would clear all this up, right? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:11, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

"Blip! Fizzzzzz." (Anna drops half a valium into the tea.) "Schluuuurrrpppp...... Aahhhhhhhhhhh." Thank you. It takes an awful lot to exhaust my patience, but that fella's edits did the trick. I'm still kicking myself for not checking Urinary bladder and Bus earlier. His edits were a real bone in my throat while putting List of buses together. Well, unless a smelly sock pops up, we can have six months of peace before he reemerges, does the exact same thing, and gets indeffed. Thanks again for the tea. :) Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:14, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Seems like the user is interested in cars and buses. I wonder if there is a way to get him to work on one article in his user space, either new or a cleanup job, and focus on that subject for a week or two to show his good faith. Viriditas (talk) 09:15, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
You know me. I have patience and trust. The user is a serial troll and vandal. At least 4 blocks at wikipedia, 2 at simple wikipedia, and who knows what else. I don't believe a word he says. I think he's stringing us along in hopes of continuing his ways. See the bottom of his talk. There are also competency issues. I would like to post at ANI for a WMF ban, if that's possible. I understand. You'll make a good admin! :) Viriditas (talk) 09:47, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello my friend. You are very welcome here.
Why articles get deleted
If your article is deleted, probably it is because it was not about something well known.
Always ask yourself this question:
"When I search with Google, or Tom, or Baidu, or Sina, can I find (English or Chinese) lots and lots of information about it?"
If the answer is yes, then it's probably okay. If no, then probably the article will be deleted.
How I found you
I watch lots of users pages to see if I can help. You can too. Click watch at the top of a page. Then, click my watchlist at the top of the page. It will show you a list of pages you watch, and what is happening there. (You can watch your friend's pages, and watch articles you are working on too. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:09, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

You can use the article wizard standard form: Wikipedia:Article wizard
or
You can find another article, click edit, and copy it and paste it into your space. Then you can change the information how you like.
(Don't forget to search Wikipedia to be sure the article you want to make is not already here.) If you have any more questions, please ask. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:09, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello again, I now see the school and university portal! Thanks, it's very useful, and I wish I had followed its guidelines from the beginning. Thanks and sorry, Njnu-ban-xueshenghao (talk) 01:59, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

No need to be sorry. You are doing a very good job! I am always here to help. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:13, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello Anna, I was referring to Wikipedia:SUP. Perhaps "portal" was not the right word. I would love to create a page to coordinate efforts to improve our articles. I am not entirely sure where the appropriate space would be. Can you suggest a place where this project would fit? At SUP? On my userpage? Your suggestion would be much appreciated. Njnu-ban-xueshenghao (talk) 03:10, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Or can we expand on what bobrayner has kindly begun? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bobrayner/NNU Njnu-ban-xueshenghao (talk) 03:15, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Anna, Is there a way to look at deleted articles so we can analyze in class why a given article did not meet standards? I think it will help students learn to correct their errors if we can examine together what the shortcomings were. Sorry to bombard you with queries! Njnu-ban-xueshenghao (talk) 03:18, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bobrayner/NNU information has mostly been moved to the project page at Wikipedia:WikiProject China/NNU Class Project. We are working on connecting students and their creations somehow.
I am looking into the deleted article request. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:12, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Asking for help

Hello Anna~Many thanks for pointing out the mistakes I have made and giving me the advice~~And i am a student from Nanjing Normal Universtiy.Actually we Chinese people seldom use Wikipedia to search for information. So i don't know how to use it ,our foreign teacher asked us to make some contributions here, and i am trying .But i found many difficulties .Can you help me? First, why the websites always try to delete my Page. i have linked the references but why in the page they still said it was proposed deletion? Can you please help me to check where there is something wrong? And my page is Hou Jingjing Many thanks .And i really look forward to your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NNU-10-June (talkcontribs) 08:56, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello. Don't worry. You are doing a good job. People want to delete it because there are only three sources. One of them is baike. I google the name and see many, many articles about her. Put lots, and lots, and lots, and lots of those website names into the article the way I showed you on your talk page. No baike. That should save your article. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:13, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

From Jany

Dear Anna, This is Jany. It's very happy to receive a message from you. I am an undergraduate student in Nanjing Normal University. My major is English. I am not good at it but I will do my best to learn. My English teacher told me that Wikipedia is a good place to learn English. I am a new comer, and I know little about it. Thank you for letting me know some rules here. You are such a kind person! I will appreciate it if you don't mind to teach me something else like the unknown customs in your country and something about your new living place. Hope to receive your message soon.

                                                                                                               Best wishes,

Helo Jany,
I am Canadian, born in London, England. I live in Haikou now. I have been here for a long time. I have 3 mice, 25 fish, and 7 dwarf hamsters. They are very cute. Customs? Hmmmmmm. Well, Halloween is coming soon so: On Halloween, it is customary for the parents to somehow get some of the best candy from the children. Sometimes money is needed. It is customary for the children to eat as much as they like that evening. They usually have very bad dreams and feel very sick the next day. A lot of candy trading takes place the next few days after that. It is customary not to give apples to kids on Halloween because of old scary stories of bad people putting pins in them to hurt the kids. So, Halloween apples are worthless. Anna Frodesiak (talk)

Anna, I notice you've taken on looking after an entire class. I've done this and know how much work it can involve, which I think you are now seeing. I just want to say that the work you're doing is admirable and your patience combined with your "happy" editing style makes for a fantastic collaborative environment. Dear Anna: I'm a student of Nanjing Normal University and my major is English normal .I am so worried about my second article that be deleted. Hello Abigail. Don't be embarrassed at all. Some of my articles were deleted too. No worries. Yushan island looks good. I think you can find sources for it. Yes? Search the Chinese name and find many, many, many different websites that talk about it. Add them to the article the way I explained on your talk page. It should be fine. Write to me after you have finished that and I will take a look. Nice to meet you. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 14:13, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Quick note about the NNU articles and editors

Hi Anna - Just wish we could add a pop-up ad for all of them, saying "just treat them exactly the same as any other Wikipedia articles or editors". I've tried to do exactly this with Like a Speeding Youth. --Shirt58 (talk) 15:02, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello Shirt58. I'm not exactly sure what you mean. I don't see a pop-up ad there. What am I missing? :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 15:07, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
I came here to give you a cookie, since your standing up for the Nanjing students was pretty cute. Going to be a lot of work for the volunteers though, sorry I can't help, but good luck. In ictu oculi (talk) 15:20, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm sorry you can't help too. But that's okay. We all have things to do. As for the students, how could I not stick up for them? They are very nice, as you can see from their nice posts here. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:03, 19 September 2011 (UTC)
Anna, if you need another hand helping with these students, just let me know (or feel free to just pass them on to my talk page). Or if there's already organization somewhere where I can jump in, let me know that, too. I can't speak Chinese, but from the edits I've seen so far, most of them seem to have decent English, even if they don't know Wikipedia's policies. Qwyrxian (talk) 05:05, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
I just notice the list that bobraynor compiled; I'll go there tomorrow. Qwyrxian (talk) 08:38, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Hello my friend. I will definitely yelp if I get overloaded. Thank you for the kind offer. (Don't forget about the edit notice at list of malls in India.) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 17:37, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for reminding me. The edit notices are up now; let me know if they meet the need. Qwyrxian (talk) 23:52, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Looks good. Consider something like a bold heading centered that says NOTICE to get their attention. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:03, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

I should have expressed myself better:

  • "should we deal with the NNU articles and editors just as we deal with any other Wikipedia articles or editors?"

My "pop-up" comment was a weeny bit not so good, and the I think the other part of my question has been answered elsewhere. Apologies for the fuddle.--Shirt58 (talk) 12:41, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

No problem. I was just confused.
My view is that they are the same as every other ESL editor, in that language issues and cultural differences can produce differing edits. Plus, first experiences at Wikipedia are daunting, and they may make some unconstructive edits.
That being said, (per: "teach a man to fish..."'), I gather that the project's aim in this regard is not to compensate, insomuch as it is to guide. We're not here to clean up. They are de facto editors, and as such, should make every effort to introduce content that conforms to the rest of the encyclopedia. It is reasonable for us to require that they look at other articles and figure out how to edit in the same manner. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:38, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, no problems, eh? Shoosh, but this just between you and me: the WP:TRUTH is that Australians are Canadians with cockney accents

Hi Anna :). Judging from the message you left at User talk:NNU-01-05100103, I assume you are able to read the Chinese text labels that I've added to the references at Xishan Island in Suzhou using an automated tool. I would kindly appreciate if you could double-check these Chinese language reference titles to make sure I haven't unknowingly added anything silly or inappropriate. Thank you. :)  -- WikHead (talk) 16:39, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello Kathy, and welcome. You did a good job with Some Natural Attractions and Cultural Heritages in Xinghua,Jiangsu Province. I like the title. But, for Wikipedia, it may not be the best. I think, actually, the whole thing could be placed into Xinghua, Jiangsu as sections. Because you were the only person to write your article, you can cut and paste the whole thing into that article.
If your friends need someone to move articles, just tell them to write to me here and I will do it for them. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:15, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Anyway, good job! It's now an article and nobody can delete it! It is here at Wikipedia forever! If somebody wants to make it part of tomato soup, come and talk to me. Hey Anna, aren't you taking the lead on helping the Chinese class with their project? I seem to recall that someone said that baidu.com was not an RS. I don't know anything about the site myself, but I came across this article in CAT:U. It's mostly sourced from baidu. Is there a better place to address this issue? LadyofShalott 22:58, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Evidently I'm not taking the lead. :) Baidu.baike is a wiki. I posted on every single student's talk page nine simple points. Point 7 says: "Don't use baike. It is not professionally written." The student received the post 2 days ago, and then created this article containing with 4 of 5 refs from baidu.baike.
There is a project page for students that has the same list of points. The link to it, however, was provided via a welcome template on their user pages. I don't think many will find that. Last night, I suggested another simple post on their talks to direct them to the project page. Another user put something together, but we didn't quite agree, and then it got late and I fell asleep. It was a long day.
The class teacher is supposed to direct them to the project page. Personally, I would like to bombard their talk pages with dead simple reminders. This is what I had in mind. In fact, I think I will go ahead and post it, with some of the basic points too. And, maybe some of these: User:Anna Frodesiak/Brown sandbox too! Thank you for bringing this up. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:16, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for all your work welcoming the students and giving them these pointers. Too bad they (at least some of them) are not heeding the advice. Oh well.. that's just another day on the wiki. :) LadyofShalott 02:17, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Message delivery

Hi Anna, How are you? You are doing a great job with helping the Chinese class. I have replied to your post at the AWB tasks page. I suggest you try the User:MessageDeliveryBot. It has an input form to request the message delivery. Ganeshk (talk) 00:32, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Ganeshk! Long time. Thanks for the encouragement. That bot sounds good, but what's the timeframe? Immediate? This is a super rush job. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:38, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
I have never used it, so don't know if it will be immediate. The time frame will depend on how fast an admin can approve your request. I know you are good on IRC, may be you can find an admin. If you are planning to use this feature frequenly, you can get yourself a TUSC account and your requests will be automatically verified. Ganeshk (talk) 00:46, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

More on the NNU class

It's really nice of you to help all these NNU students who have been thrown into the brutal world of Wikipedia editing without any training. You're not just taking them under your wing: you're helping them to fly on their own! In the mean time, it must be hard for them to have their first articles nominated for AfDs so quickly. After taking part in one of these AfDs, I left a welcome message on the author's talk page, but I'm not sure how much I can help. From what I've seen, many of these new editors would benefit from reading WP:ISNOT and WP:LOCAL. Both pages are a bit long, but they can help to write articles that can float. And since you're the hub they all come to, I thought I would mention this here. In any case, both new and old editors are grateful for the precious help you're giving. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Madalibi (talk) 02:20, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello. I'm happy to help. I really like Chinese students. They're very nice people.
Many don't even have a welcome with the 5 pillars. I'm very neutral on this. I don't want them to be overwhelmed with lots of text. Also, we don't want them to be drawn away from the message we give them. If we give them too much to read, they may read none of it. I don't even mention signing with tildes and indenting messages right now. WP can be daunting, and they can be easily overloaded. The teacher is giving them the basics, and we are now posting helpful User:Anna_Frodesiak/Brown sandbox points, one at a time at their talks. One each hour or so. Hopefully, a new orange message bar for each. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:10, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
I like Chinese students too! I always find them very nice and motivated to learn. I had a simple idea: instead of giving them overwhelming amounts of English text to read, why not direct them to the relevant pages on Chinese Wikipedia? Both 欢迎 (= WP:WELCOME) and 创建新页面 (= WP:CREATE) contain a very helfpul "toolbox for beginners" ("新手工具箱") that these students should have no trouble browsing. 编辑页面 (= WP:EDITING) gives excellent instructions on how to edit and format a page. And the five pillars are here: 五大支柱. Since Chinese Wikipedia uses the same codes as English Wikipedia, this might be a simple way to help. What do you think? Cheers, Madalibi (talk) 03:49, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Excellent idea!! Could you raise that at project talk? It's there. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:53, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you! The links in the section you linked to are to English-language articles that the students posted on Chinese Wikipedia. There are no links to Wiki policies. I'll go ahead and post links with Chinese characters so that even students who only take a quick glance at the Project page will notice them. Madalibi (talk) 04:04, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Ok, done. Let's just hope they consult the Project page, now! Madalibi (talk) 04:24, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Beautiful! It looks great, and I'm sure will be very helpful to students. I will tell their teacher about this on IRC. He will tell the students to read up. Many thanks!!! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:40, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
You're very welcome! I'm always glad to help when I can. Good success with this and your other projects! Madalibi (talk) 04:48, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you again. Wonderful job! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:03, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

I'm confused with something. We,who are learning English, need to edit something in the wikepedia. Is this just like students who are learning Chinese editing something in baidu? Hope my understanding is right... — Preceding unsigned comment added by NNU-01-05100602 (talkcontribs) 02:51, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello my friend. Yes. Wikipedia is just like baidu baike. So this is the English version. Your class is about making and article here. If you have more question, please ask. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:10, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Request for help——a student from Nanjing Normal University

Dear Anne Frodesiak: I created a new account on Wikipedia named "NNU-11-22100528" instead of the former one "NNU-11-YangYang".Would you please help me add my new user-name to the NNU student name lists? Because I'm afraid I've forgotten the exact password to my old account. Please help me . NNU-11-YangYang (talk) 04:57, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

No problem. I just added your new name here. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:03, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Dear Anne: Thank you for your patience on helping solve my problem ! I really appreciate your help!^!^ NNU-11-22100528 (talk) 09:13, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

You are very welcome. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:10, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

You mean it actually bit you? o_O I thought it was a joke. Araneus are generally harmless and don't bite. Heck, I've played with them as a kid in spider fights. :P Anyway, good to hear it wasn't serious, heh.

And yep noticed. ;) No worries, felt the same way the first time I wrote a spider article heh. I'm nominating the article for DYK btw. :) -- Obsidin Soul 10:49, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

I'm so sorry. I was kidding. I thought you knew they're not venomous. Sorry sorry sorry. Oops.
DYK. Nice. Good hook: "Did you know that Araneus mitificus does not cause vertigo and require you to wear a motorcycle helmet around the house? Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 10:52, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
  • sniff* I wear motorcycle helmets around the house. Two, in fact for protection from mind-control devices. >:( -- Obsidin Soul 11:43, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
You too? Wow! Okay, the secret is in how much tinfoil you stuff in there. An a few layers of tinfoil on the outside won't hurt either, but don't be tempted to make tinfoil antennae with balls of steel wool on the end. That just draws the signal and looks dumb. Of course not. All I have on the surface are Hello Kitty stickers. -- Obsidin Soul 12:15, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

NNU-asking for help~

Hi Anna again! Thanks a lot for your advice on the usage of "space". I have written an artile about "zhinv",and one of the helpers told me that there are already pages on Wikipedia about this figure. And I have found other interesting topics that I'd like to share on the Wiki. Is that okay that I just leave that article and start a new one? Best wishes~ NNU-11-22100511 (talk) 11:01, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello again. It looks good, but needs lots more references. Keep up the good work! :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:10, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
Hi NNU-11-22100511, I thought I should also mention that you can work on as many articles as you like at the same time. As Anna mentions, the article needs quite a few more references, which I'm sure you'll be able to add . In the mean time, I thought I'd mention that you can create as many articles as you like in your userspace - for example User:NNU-11-22100511/My first article, User:NNU-11-22100511/My second article and User:NNU-11-22100511/A super secret article which will wow the wikipedia audience. I'm so sorry you're having trouble. Are you looking for Wikipedia:WikiProject China/NNU Class Project/Students? Or Wikipedia:WikiProject China/NNU Class Project? What is "pentagram notation"? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:18, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
I think he/she means the project tag on his user page (it has five bullet points). Anyway, the user appears to have blanked their user page by accident, and I just restored it. Viriditas (talk) 11:19, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

HELP! nnu

hi! Iam NNU-11-22100511. I just have finished an article called "Bunian Tu" and I uploaded a picture, but I can't find it on "My contributions",what's wrong??? When I upload the picture again, the page said there is already the same picture, and I found another account only have two contributions that I made today...I am confused..what's wrong?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by NNU-11-22100511 (talkcontribs) 13:20, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Are you using more than one user account besides NNU-11-22100511 (talk · contribs) or were you logged off? You need to upload an image with a different file name, so change it. Viriditas (talk) 13:27, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
A file upload is a contribution to our sister wiki called commons. It does not show when you check your contributions. If however, you go to the bottom of the page when checking your contributions, you'll see in the box a link for "global contributions". This checks contributions for all wiki projects, and there are many. And of course checking your global contributions, as I have done, shows your upload here. Thanks for your question, and consider asking your questions on your course project page so it will be more visible to all members of the project. And in answering your question there, other students might benefit from the question you asked. My76Strat (talk) 13:55, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

How to make the file in my article smaller?

I was trying to put some pictures into my article. But after I finished it, I found the picture was too big. How can I make it smaller? P.S: I was trying to search my article on the search place but I couldn't find it. How can I fulfill my article to achieve the request? I will be very happy with your help~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by NNU-10-HanRongrong (talkcontribs) 16:49, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

I fixed the size. Click edit at the article to see how I did it. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:44, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
That looks like nice soup, and a very good photo. Did you take the photo yourself in a restaurant? :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:45, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

I looked to see If I could revert to a copyvio free version, but no luck. There's probably scope for an article on the topic (don't look at me like that, too busy at the moment....). Peridon (talk) 20:17, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

I looked for sources yesterday. I couldn't find anything. These root carvings are everywhere here. It's definitely a topic, or at least a section in an article. But it's deleted now anyway. Too bad. I don't know how created it, but it could be recreated. There must be tons of Chinese sources out there. Maybe I was searching the wrong characters. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 20:27, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
I managed to find a journal article about root carving as inspiration for classic chinese ceramics. I didn't realize it was copyvio though. Should be recreated.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 21:43, 21 September 2011 (UTC)
I was looking it up wrong. I don't think these 树根雕刻 and 树根雕塑 were right. Sellers' sites were displacing all the good stuff, and .net, .org, .edu came up zippo.
I think it's also called Root art (根雕艺术). I was looking it up wrong. I've found some sources: [3][4] These alone are almost good enough to recreate the article. And more sources like this can be found. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 22:07, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello

Hey Anna Frodesiak, I just thought I'd let you know that I saw your article Limnonectes timorensis in the New Articles list--It would be great if you could also improve the related article Corrugated Frog.

It's nice to see you editing!Jipinghe (talk) 23:48, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Hello Jipinghe. I will definitely expand Limnonectes timorensis. I am sorry I left it as a stub, but I've been a bit busy. Before I expand Corrogated Frog, I will start several other frog articles for which there images, but no articles. That takes priority.
Of course, I know nothing about frogs, other than the fact that they know how to say "renret", which isn't really a word. If they learned how to say "watchout", maybe people would pay more attention to them. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:44, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Interview with Wikimedia Foundation

Hi Anna, I hope you're well. My name is Aaron and I'm one of the Storytellers working on the 2011 fundraiser for the Wikimedia Foundation. For this year's campaign, we're interviewing as many of the very active and productive Wikipedians as we can to broaden the range of appeals we run come November. I wonder if you would want to tell me more about your experiences editing and writing here? If so, I'll ask you your personal story and I'll ask you some general questions about Wikipedia. Please let me know if you're interesting by emailing amuszalski@wikimedia.org. Thanks! Aaron (WMF) (talk) 01:20, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

He Anna, I think you were a bit too fast in your compliments at the teacher's talk page of the hanging temple article (it already existed in main space: hanging Temple), so best not to stimulate too much. Furthermore, I assessed it at the user's page and had the feeling it was a machine translation... I have taken the liberty of removing your statement form the teacher's page to avoid confusion there; as always, feel free to re-add of course.... L.tak (talk) 05:54, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

You're absolutely right. I should have done a simple check. It was in the teacher's sandbox. I think that triggered my carelessness. I've clicked on a student article at least twice before and found it had been redirected to that article. Silly me. The name should have jumped right out. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 07:50, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
By the way, I'm sure it was obvious to the author that I was commenting on top part. The body of text beneath was just dumped there as source material. Whether or not that's allowed, I didn't get into.
Taken from my hard drive notes for next IRC session with teacher:
"teacher: *if it's a big topic,. probably already has an article. look for english name *don't sign articles. just communications" Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:00, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
It could be that the lead was written by him indeed; I didn't consider that. Also these starts are good practicing I guess, so only will help them in the future. This is my first time in a schoolproject, so I am really looking forward to seeing the progress over the next few weeks resulting in some nice articles! (we already have some good topics now) L.tak (talk) 08:44, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
Now I remember, (after checking :) ), the bottom part appears to be software translated.
Yes, they have made quite an improvement. Check the first groups of talk page posts above. Now, they are much better with spaces. They are now using better sources, and more of them. There are still issues like duplicate articles. But, one step at a time. Their teacher is doing a good job. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:00, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
