Could you add an {{Undated}} feature to it? This hack works, but a non-coders search-and-replace hack is not as elegant as the real deal. I noticed on your user page...

There is a bot task, that is way out in the stratosphere, and therefore might be interesting to you, that I was wondering if I could get your thoughts on. This is not a request for you to write it (I doubt there's anyone on the planet who could), but to pick your brain about potential solutions to even the tiniest portions of the task.

I would like a bot (or a system of bots) that creates outlines, or any portions thereof, like Outline of Prague, all by itself.

For the sake of simplicity, I'll keep this discussion within the scope of city outlines.

So far, we have:

And those aren't even complete or up-to-date.

There are 1000 or more other cities that could also use an outline, but that would take a human editor over 10 years, without working on any other subjects, and without maintaining any of the outlines he or she created.

A bot, if one could be created, I'm guessing could get the same task (1000 city outlines) done in less than a day. Or would it be in even less time?

What parts of that task (building the Outline of Prague, and outlines for other cities) could be automated with today's technology?

For the sake of triage, what parts of this task are an AI-complete problem?

For accessibility to other programmers/users, I was thinking such tools (for as much of the task as is feasible) would best be provided in JavaScript, to promote programming collaboration amongst users, and to inspire the leapfrog effect. Thoughts?

It would also be convenient to have bots update and maintain the outlines once they have been created. But, once created, human editors would be involved fixing errors, adding info, and so on. What problems do you foresee with a bot trying to maintain outlines that human editors are also editing? How could these issues be handled, especially by the bots?

AI was just one part of the query, and that in the context of what can't be done via JavaScript. (A form of triage, so I know what not to focus on – I'm sorry I wasn't clearer about that). I'm doing all my programming in JavaScript for the time being, so what I'm primarily interested in are the capabilities and limitations of it and jQuery. And since you are a renowned JavaScript programmer, I couldn't think of a better person to ask. Whatever parts of this task I can learn how to pick off with JavaScript, will be helpful. Any guidance you could provide would be most appreciated.
The 3 main activities it involves are:
  1. Gathering topics pertaining to the subject of the outline
  2. Placing those topics relative to each other in the tree structure of the outline
  3. Extracting annotations from the corresponding articles to briefly describe each entry in the outline.

Daemon pronunciation

Hello,

I am new to editing Wikipedia so I apologize if I'm not doing something correctly. I edited the page on daemons (computing) to show the correct pronunciation, but you changed it back saying that many people pronounce it incorrectly. The issue, though, is that in the computer science industry there are many people who pronounce common words very incorrectly. People say "uh-bun-too" or "you-bun-too" instead of the correct "oo-boon-too", or they say "dee-bian" instead of the correct "deb-ian" and many other atrocities. Just because people don't know how to pronounce words correctly doesn't mean they should be accepted as a valid pronunciation. There are many people who also believe the Earth is flat and that vaccines cause autism, but Wikipedia should not accept those as facts. People go to Wikipedia to learn knowledge, not popular opinion or usages or words. I disagree. People pronounce all kinds of things wrong nowadays. Look at Ubuntu and Debian as examples. There is an objective right and wrong in terms of pronunciation of things. Even if many people say it incorrectly, if we add it to a list of acceptable pronunciations, it just makes the world a stupider place by saying that the correct way is whatever the lowest common denominator of person says. That is a road to stupidity. Look at GNU as an example. The animal "gnu" is pronounced /nuː/ or /njuː/, but in software it's pronounced /ɡnuː/. GNOME is another example: the mythological creature is always /noʊm/, but the software is often pronounced /ɡnoʊm/. Through usage over multiple decades, "daemon" seems to be in this category. It looks like that one is already being tagged, so you should be able to add a rule like 
.linked-misspellings { color: orange; }

Well, adding that doesn't seem to work on Journal of Palaeontology, which is still categorized as a plain Jane redirect. And yes I've purged/refreshed/etc.

As we editors are collecting small paces of infomation into the page piece by piece slowly. The main reason why this was created (must create asap) to avoid confusion due to recent media coverage. Issues with misogyny on Wikipedia

Gender bias on Wikipedia is a problem. If female readers are offended by Wikipedia, they will be less likely to edit, read, or donate to Wikipedia. I have made multiple attempts to address this issue and all times my proposals were overwhelmingly rejected. Here, scroll down to (Rename "View history"). here 2 scroll to bottom, and here 3 scroll to bottom. I believe there are several reasons my proposals have been rejected. One reason is the overwhelming majority of Wikipedia editors and readers are male, and they may be more likely to agree that putting down women is good for them. Adding to this disparity is that women who are offended by articles like List of common misconceptions are much less likely to read or edit them. Supporting my claim that women are offended by List of common misconceptions is the [1] first deletion nomination for this article was made by User: Crystallina, a woman. Stating or implying that Women have lower intelligence than Men is a Faux pas "an embarrassing or tactless act or remark in a social situation". Please share this concern with Wikimedia Foundation administrators and leaders and anyone else you believe may be interested. I am very interested in their feedback. Arguing against me is that only 185 hits on Gender bias on Wikipedia article yesterday. So maybe I am overreacting. However, 7380 hits on misogyny article yesterday, a massive spike! @Brian Everlasting:, perhaps that's because you insist on 'view history' being an example of bias/sexism, when it's really not. Try as I might, I can't fathom or conceive anything remotely offensive/gendered about 'view history'. Likewise that women nominate articles for deletion hardly imply they are offended by them. The gender bias/gender gap in Wikipedia is real, but it's not by grasping at straws that it's going to improve. I'd argue the only thing this achieves is make efforts to close the gap/fix the bias look ridiculous/nonsensical and therefore dismiss-able without further consideration. Anyway, I see why your proposals have been rejected. If you want to work against gender bias, then do something constructive like write articles and promote civility. Stop trying to manufacture "gender bias" in words that are etymologically completely unrelated to gender, overblown concern over page view statistics, or assuming that something is biased because of the gender of one user who happened to nominate it for deletion. @Rovingrobert: Because when people are looking at resolving an issue, they remove the {{citation needed}} or {{POV}} or whatever template that indicates the issue exists. They don't also look to see if someone redundantly added the categories directly to the article.
Further, if we did add maintenance categories directly to the article, someone fixing one {{citation needed}} would have to look through the whole article for any other {{citation needed}} (including any redirects to that template!) with the same date to know if it was safe to remove the corresponding category or not. When we let {{citation needed}} itself add the necessary category, the category removal happens automatically when the template is removed. Anomie⚔ 19:15, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi Anomie, hope that you're well. I'm still very thankful for your help automating peer reviews back in 2017...! I have been thinking about using a bot to contact interested peer reviewers regularly to get some more attention to our neglected reviews. Would this be something you'd be able to help with in terms of creating a bot? I'm just brainstorming ideas at the moment but I think it might be very useful but thought I'd sound you out first. Unsigned script

Really 2 comments here, when I came to the page I wanted to see if anyone else had run into the same problem so I went to check your archives, only you don't have a search box setup for editors to do that. So I went manually to each year-titled archive page and manually searched for the terms in my issue which took about 5 minutes. I don't know if that is by design really, a non searchable archive seems odd to me. But anyways my second comment was about the unsigned script. It must be an issue on my end, because my searching didn't show anyone else having this issue. Using Firefox and Chromium, I can't get the script to work. I highlight the text and click {{unsigned}}, it does its search and then promptly adds nothing to any article I'm editing wherever I've tried to use it. It's about as useful to me as a sign warning Caution – Dry Paint. Are there any particular things that I may need to do to get it working? It would be nice to be able to use it. You can easily enough search subpages of a page, see Help:Searching#prefix:.

As for the script, my only guess is that you might be using the new VE-based wikitext editor or the new syntax highlighting in the old wikitext editor. I wrote the script around 5 years before either of those existed, and since I don't use either of them I haven't tested them. Anomie⚔ 14:56, 1 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I can’t get logged in to Wikimedia Commons it only says “Central login, You are centrally logged in. Commons mobile log in error

Maybe this is irrelevant, maybe this is the cause, but as I saw that you wish to fix this bug, with me this bug first started I think two weeks ago and during that time I received a message from Tech News that no new build will be rolled out that week, I'm not sure if we're on the same build of the MediaWiki software as we were two (2) weeks ago, could it maybe be true that this problem is exclusive to this build? And if possible, could you compare the cookies between the (particularly mobile) features of the current build and the preceding build? For the record as far as I know this only affects commons.m.Wikimedia.org, as you can see I'm editing "on mobile" on the English Wikipedia (URL string: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Anomie#/editor/new) here without any logging issues, so maybe you could also compare the cookies of both wiki's. --Donald Trung (talk) 19:47, 8 July 2018 (UTC)

Invalid SHA1 for one page on old 1.23 wiki

Hi Anomie. I'm finally starting to use the bot I've been working on for so long, and on the very first "real" run, I came across a bizarre issue on a single page of an API query and I wondered if it was something you had any insight on. Have a look at this result. As you can see, for some bizarre reason, for that page and that page only (at least out of the result set I was looking at), the SHA1 is all zeroes. I have database access on that server, and everything looks fine there. The rev_sha1 field for that revision (0x9b3xp050rtd33opfam6lrwvla1or4) is correct for the text, and I see no invalid characters in it nor any invisible ones when I look at the hex view in MySQL Workbench. Poking around, it looks like this is some kind of bizarre failure in wfBaseConvert, where the main body of the function emits an empty string, then pads it to 40 characters at the end. What might have caused that, though, I'm not sure. Any thoughts? – Robin Hood  (talk) 08:32, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Never mind...I found the issue documented internally in later versions of MediaWiki. The problem arises from SHA-1 values that begin with 0x or 0b and do not evaluate to hex/binary values. See here and here, if you're curious. – Robin Hood  (talk) 17:41, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Can one stop your bot?

Dear Anomie, this might sound strange as a question. Sorry! Sometimes i translate my german articles into the english wikipedia and post them later. Therefore i store them in German on my place "Gyanda/my new site". And then slowly, slowly i look for the right links, format the references etc. Unfortunately for me, your bot is so fast, it changes all my formatting in a minute from the german format to the english. But i would prefer to do this "alone" as i keep learning by this. Is there a way to tell the bot: Please don't change things here as i'm working on it? That would help me. When I go to this page from a computer - it's all good - I go to the Self page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self_Service). List of ISO 3166 country codes

I've made numerous changes to the List of ISO 3166 country codes. I've replaced the first column labled "Common country name" and replaced it with a column labled "ISO 3166 Country name". I've also added Wikipedia article and other common country names cross-references. I've added a footnotes sections. Please take a look at this article and let me know if it meets your expectations. sys bot - Requests for approval denied

I have some questions regarding the approval denied for my sys bot:

here seems to be no reason you need apihighlimits for this task

I would like to use as much historical revisions as possible to track historical change of business activities of companies (for instance, I would like to track how Volkswagen did change his business towards low carbon emissions vehicules)

, and you've not made any other edits so there's no evidence you have the understanding of the English Wikipedia's policies and guidelines that is required of a bot operator (see WP:BOTNOTNOW).

How could I show evidence that I have the understanding of the English wikipedia policies and guidelines ?

You might also see mw:API:Query#Continuing queries.

This query seems to be very useful to get all revisions from Wikipedia but it seems that we cannot combine it with the pageids parameter. So it's impossible to get all revisions of a specific article id. Do you have any suggestions ?

I fail to see how fetching thousands of revisions of Wikipedia articles is going to "track historical change of business activities of companies", but I'll leave you to that since I don't really need to know. You don't need apihighlimits to fetch revisions.
You show that you have understanding the English Wikipedia's policies and guidelines by being a productive (non-bot) editor for a decent period of time and a decent number of edits. Before you ask, there are no specific thresholds for "a decent period of time" or "a decent number of edits".
Use of continuation is independent of using the pageids parameter. Anomie⚔ 19:34, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

@Dank: Personally I don't have an opinion on that, I was just fixing the link to clear the AnomieBOT error at Special:PermaLink/867478954#TFATitleSubpageCreator: Cannot find featured article in Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 7, 2018. Since we have the guideline about quotes being outside the bolding/link, it doen't seem worthwhile to update the bot to allow them inside. It might be better to ask at that MOS talk page. Not sure what to say to that ... it's easily fixable in this case, but it might happen in the future that there's no way around updating the bot to handle things like [[Déjà Vu (Beyoncé song)|"Déjà Vu" (Beyoncé song)]]. WP:DRV

I just noticed that for some reason AnomieBOT doesn't removed the headers of closed discussions at WP:DRV anymore. Could you fix it? Regards, Armbrust The Homunculus 02:40, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

It looks like it was broken by recent edits to {{DRV top}}. In particular, the changing of "safesubst" to "SAFESUBST" and the addition of substed template calls inside the header both broke the bot's attempts to turn the template's contents into a regular expression, and the addition of HTML tags to the substed output broke detection of headers in other places where the code was assuming headers wouldn't contain '='. I've updated the bot to take those changes into account.
BTW, it would have been easier to test this if you had left some pages with the problem intact instead of manually removing all the headers. Anomie⚔ 15:17, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

The bot only creates the subpages 7 days out, while December 7 is currently nine days from now. It looks like it'll create that one without issue in two more days. But the first part is WP:COSMETICBOT and I wouldn't bother even if this weren't a blatant attempt to get me to contribute to the problem you got yourself into at Wikipedia:Bots/Noticeboard#Possible bot editing from German IP, while the second would take more research for possible variations and errors than I have time for at the moment. Hello ! page of Udit Narayan doesn’t seem legit. Please edit the label of Indian playback singer . His place of birth is a controversial as he has told he was born in Saptari,Nepal to Nepal and told Bihar to India . Review page and edit his origin as Nepal. He might be living in India and taken Indian citizenship but also has a Nepali citizenship as his both parents were Nepalese and his natives still live in Bhardah,Saptari,Nepal. So basically according to him he was born in Bihar in his maternal house but still is a Nepalese origin. So request you to edit the page as he is not particularly an Indian . Hi Anomie,

Would it be possible to add a header to your bot maintained tables (e.g. User:AnomieBOT/IPERTable) - I'm thinking like a navbox between the tables and maybe some other links? The only thing would have been to remove {{year}} from WP:AWB/DT if it had been listed there directly, so AnomieBOT wouldn't think it took a |date= as it did when it was a redirect to {{year needed}}. But it wasn't there. Anomie⚔ 21:55, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
