Siskel and Ebert website

My website has been up since January 2011. Roger Ebert has used my site on numerous occasions while he was still with us. We were the first to post his and Siskel's very first show. We do have permission to show the Tribune shows, but I have not gotten a response from either Disney nor WTTW in Chicago about my site in all this time.

Disney decided to take the At The Movie website down after they cancelled the show back in 2010. Roger had always enjoyed the old shows which is why I put them up. Other people have enjoyed them and they still do.

We do not accept any money. I put the site up at my expense! We receive over two million hits a month! Anyone and everyone can watch any of the over 700 shows of Siskel and Ebert we have AT NO CHARGE whatsoever.

My external links on Wikipedia were just a way to enhance the page (slightly) for a particular movie: To let people know that they can watch the review that was discussed within the article. Many times the articles mentions Roger Ebert, but there is no mention of Gene Siskel.

Many of these reviews still exist, and it is a shame that Disney and WTTW in Chicago won't put them up. So, I addressed the problem the best way I could!

SO the bit about my site being dubious in nature was unwarranted. That was assumption based not on facts! Roger Ebert appreciated my site, and he didn't find it dubious!

Yes, keep the external links deleted on Wikipedia to my site! That just indicates to me that the article for any movie was not well researched, since additional information is out there that is purposely being left out on Wikipedia!

Your website apparently does not have permission from the copyright holders for people to upload videos there, Firstmagnitude. Whether or not Roger Ebert linked there is irrelevant. You need written permission from the legal copyright holders. Wikipedia has very strict rules forbidding links to copyright violating websites. Plain and simple. All links to your website will be removed from Wikipedia unless you can produce ironclad evidence of copyright compliance. This is not optional and not negotiable. It is mandatory. If you persist in pushing your website on Wikipedia, you will be blocked from editing. That is a certainty. Stop now. I get the impression that you and Mike Smith got into it over edits to the page on the Twin Peaks incident in Waco.

Let me preface the following remarks by saying that he's an older gent who lived the life for a long time and has an incredible amount of firsthand knowledge of the subject matter.

That said, read if you will, he asked that I relay a message on his behalf:

I tried to use the Talk Page and I read the self help article on it. For some reason I just have not been able to figure it out.

I trust the man and I hope you will set aside any ill feelings toward him. His perspective may not fit anyone's ideological template on the matter, but that goes with the territory. He has a tendency to be acerbic and assertive, but that is a function of his age as much as anything else.

You are not terrible and you show potential. But you need to limit yourself to situations where you are 99+% sure of the correct information. If you say something incorrect, you can remove it if you are prompt. But once someone else comments (as in this example), leave your answer alone (except for correcting minor typos). It is jarring to see a reply to a comment that has been removed. Better to apologize, or strike through the comment in such a situation. Do not be discouraged. Keep learning. I have never answered a template editing question, because I don't have any idea how to edit templates and am not interested in learning. Is it possible

I do not know but also do not care that much. I pretty much consider it a badge of honor if I am attacked by a deranged troll every once in a while. I've finally figured out that pesky templates thing, thanks to you!  :-D

But (there's always a but) when I do this template:

The whole thing doesn't show. I tried it out in my sandbox 1st. It just says it has multiple issues instead of listing them all as it shows on the template pg where I got the code. (Of course I forgot to bookmark the pg.) I was doing some historical research (mining references can sometimes strike gold, so I was disappointed at the lack of them) & wanted to toss that template up on a bio of a dead person that has about 3 footnotes, all from the same biography book (which I own), & really needed better sourcing. Sorry to keep poking you on things that are 2nd nature to more experienced editors, but this Wikicode drives me nuts sometimes! ScarletRibbons (talk) 11:12, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello @ScarletRibbons:, in order to display multiple issues with this template, you need to separately write the issue templates underneath as you would normally, then put }} at the end. For example, if a page needed more references and was written like an advertisement, you could put this at the top;

to display this;

Your selfie in Czech Wikipedia

I clicked your Teahouse host photo File:Self portrait July 2012.jpg and noticed Global file usage. Did you know that the Czech Wikipedia displays you at cs:Selfie#Galerie? Google Translate says the caption "Selfie staršího muže" means "Selfie older man". The photo was added in [1] with caption "selfie starého muže" meaning "selfie old man". I don't have a problem with the photo being used as a selfie example but I thought you should know if you don't already. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:17, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello PrimeHunter. I added my selfie to Selfie a couple of years ago, making the point in a talk page message that the phenomenon didn't involve only attractive young females. There are questions at the Teahouse that have been there long enough to be featured on the front but have no answers, I am not an ideal person to answer these questions myself. What should I do? Once you get your book back from your friend, then look it up in the book and cite it properly. Until then, it does not belong in Wikipedia. If you do not have time to look it up, then you do not have the time to add it to Wikipedia properly. No one is saying that you made it up, but rather that you have not yet cited it properly. New article because old one deleted

I was wondering if it was possible to create a new article on a subject that was previously taken down by Wikipedia. The article was taken down because an editor was posting wrong information; information contradictory to what was already in the article. Hello Mahima711. An editor posting wrong information is not a valid reason to delete an article about a notable topic, so something else might be going on. Instead, the false information would simply be removed. If there are persistent efforts to create an article that doesn't comply with our policies, sometimes the topic is "salted", which means that creating a new article on the topic is blocked unless an administrator agrees to lift that block. This is relatively rare, though, and in most cases, a new article can be created as long as it complies with our policies and guidelines. Please be aware that it is likely that several experienced editors have your topic on their watch lists. Expect scrutiny if you write a new article. Good luck. The death of Bill Graham

Very well done, Samf4u! As for Blair, he wrote a biography of Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, who were very close to Bill Graham. And the blog is certainly popular and respected among their fans. But I am inclined to try to find better sources, especially for the gruesome claim about the bodies falling to the ground. The other substantive comment that I have is that I would downplay the "Vallejo" location. Vallejo is a city with clearly defined boundaries, and the area to the west is unpopulated wetlands. I know this area very well. Vallejo may be the closest city, but Sonoma and Novato are almost as close. The main point is that the crash site is over six miles west of Vallejo, and that six mile stretch is uninhabited wetlands. No one who knows the area would say "I am in Vallejo" when passing that site. As for the title, I favor "Bill Graham helicopter crash". Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:18, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Private Press

Hi Jim thank you for your prompt reply. Yes the same terminology applies in New Zealand. All the universities which have private presses also have presses :) that is, a publishing "business". Hello, Elucidata. I am unaware of U.S. universities that have two separate publishing arms, one called a "University press" and one called a "Private press". However, I am not an expert so I could be wrong. In my experience, any publishing operation which is formally affiliated with a university is called a "University press", while a "Private press" is a venture by one or more individuals to publish high end books as an avocation or a hobby, as opposed to a fully commercial venture. Of course, the lines can be blurry, and a very successful private press is hard to distinguish from a smaller commercial press. Just my thoughts, for whatever it is worth. Hello Juvetorre. Your submission was declined and you are invited to make further changes. It was not "rejected". Phrases like "high profile" and "award winning book" are promotional and should be removed. The whole text has a mildly promotional tone. No sources are cited for his education. Your #1 challenge is to show convincingly that this person is notable. That means that there has been significant coverage of him as a person in reliable, independent sources. Quoting him, interviewing him, inviting him to speak at a conference, or mentioning him in passing are insufficient in themselves to establish notability. Co-chairing a subcommittee of a professional group does not establish notability. A concern has also been expressed about the copyright status of the photograph. Did you take the photo yourself? Hello Orbitzoll. Sorry for the delay in responding, as I have been quite busy. Your draft lists a number of projects you claim are notable. We need references to reliable, independent sources in order to state that these projects are notable, well-designed or worthy of praise. When I checked about ten references at random, they were all to the architect's own website, various client websites, or to the website of the trade group for Australian architects (with text and photos furnished by the architect). None of these sources is independent of the architect and none are acceptable for referencing a list of notable works. You really need to wrap your head around the fact that a Wikipedia biography needs to be built, first and foremost, on coverage in truly independent sources that have nothing whatsoever to do with the subject of the biography. Hello Jim Cullen328. Thanks for your latest advice. I have removed all references that route to the architect's own website, although this is a pity, because by far the best images of his work are there! I have also focussed on stripping out all apparently non-independent references, including client websites. The Australian Institute of Architects is the national professional body, but is also the main arbiter of creative work in the field, which makes things a bit tricky if I am not allowed to reference their awards. There is absolutely no doubt that this man is notable. He is the most awarded architect ever in the history of this place and deserving of an article in any comprehensive encyclopaedia. Would you please take another look at the article and the updated references and let me know if I have addressed your issues or if there is even more I can do? Hello Orbitzoll. You can link to the architect's website as an external link. Of course, you can mention awards from the Australian Institute of Architects, and link to their awards pages. The specific AIA link that I objected to had photos provided by the architect and text provided by the architect. I hope you can see the difference. You can take photos of the architect's projects and upload them to Wikimedia Commons under an acceptable Creative Commons license and then add them to the article. I am looking at the references for the notable buildings and I still see references that are not independent. They must be removed, and truly independent sources substituted. If no truly independent sources are available, then the specific building project must be removed from that list. If an architect does a project for a paying client, and the paying client discusses the project on their own website, and says "what a wonderful project and what a brilliant architect", then that is not an independent source for a neutral encyclopedia article. That is typical promotional puffery and not a neutral source. At the risk of sounding repetitious, the backbone of this article and its content must be what 100% independent reliable sources write about the architect and his work.
On another matter, any quotations must be in quotation marks or otherwise displayed typographically in a way that makes it clear that they are someone else's words, not yours. And cited immediately after the quote. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:09, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello FYH Oscar. Once notability has been established by significant coverage in independent, reliable sources, then you can reference "minor, obvious" details to the company website. Common examples include the date of founding, headquarters city, and CEO name. However, nothing evaluative or promotional can be referenced to the company website. @Cullen328: I happened to notice that you frequently answer questions at the teahouse. I noticed because I happen to spend a lot of time there myself, though for the opposite reason. (I ask the questions you answer.) I found your comments helpful even though they were answers to other's questions. I thinking am doing okay on Wikipedia, but I've barely made any mainspace edits, and can't seem to find my place on Wikipedia. In the month I started, I made many edits, and then took a unexpected a wikibreak that lasted for two months. I would like to become a better editor and find something on Wikipedia I can help with. I know you already have at least one person you mentor, but if at all possible, do you mind mentoring me a little too? Hello BluJay. The person I mentor is unable to contribute much these days, for reasons that need no discussion here. The one thing that I will say is that I will be here for her 100% whenever she is again able to edit actively. So, I do not want to establish a formal "mentor" relationship with another editor at this this time. Plus, I do not know your work here on Wikipedia yet.
That being said, I think that my record at the Teahouse and here on my talk page shows that I enjoy helping new editors and directing them in the right direction. At least, I try to.
My general advice to a new editor trying to find their place here on Wikipedia is to seek that answer in self-examination about which areas of human knowledge rivet your attention, and where you have (or can develop) a degree of expertise. Often, these will be local or niche topic areas. For example, you could set out to systematically improve articles about the historic sites of the town, city or region where you live. Start with those that are weak, unreferenced, or poorly refenced stubs. Good edits to such articles brings you positive attention rather than drama. In your mind, always keep improving the encyclopedia the underlying motive for every edit. This is an encyclopedia, not a social network.
The project is so broad and vast that every single good faith volunteer can find useful work to do here. So, please feel free to ask specific questions at any time. I will do my best to answer. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:29, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

In my opinion, Rubbish computer, you are paying too much attention to the formality of whether or not you are a "host". No one other than you cares one way or another. Discussion about C-SPAN First Ladies

Hello Cullen328. Thanks for taking the time to look over my proposed updates to the First Ladies: Influence & Image entry and respond at the Teahouse. Did you have any other feedback? If editors see the inclusion of the names of producers and academic advisors as appearing too promotional, I would be happy to remove them. Just because an image is available on Commons does not mean that it belongs in an article. Selecting images that add encyclopedic value to an article requires editorial judgment. Hello Miraclexix. Every editor has the right to revert, as explained at WP:RV. All Israel/Palestine articles are under a one reversion per day restriction, and after that, you must discuss and obtain consensus for any changes on the talk page. These articles are very contentious and are watched closely by highly experienced editors. I very rarely edit highly controversial articles because I know that I can be more productive and happier elsewhere. My recommendation is to be patient, to compromise, and to never lose your temper. Emeco 1006

The article is about a famous chair that prompted copycats, is often featured in movies or at high-end restaurants and is known for being an icon of old-fashioned American workmanship (made by hand, lasts forever, etc.) It was originally built for military warships at sea.

I've started a discussion here about whether there should be a separate three-paragraph stub on the manufacturer, or if information about the company should be consolidated on the article about the more notable chair based on the advice I wrote at WP:ORGVANITY. Unfortunately it did not produce any discussion and I was wondering if you wanted to take a look.

This is also a good example to bust your pre-conceptions about paid editing; there's no reasonable way to interpret their motives as being to hide or spin non-existent negative information on the page. The article must be written from the neutral point of view. I suggest that you read WP:CREATIVE which is the notability guideline for poets and novelists. Hello RiqueThur. Did you read and understand WP:CREATIVE? A university running a brief item on one of its graduates is not independent coverage of the sort that establishes notability. It is a routine thing that universities do. Once notability is firmly established, then such sources can be used for uncontroversial biographical details.
