Neptune Islands and Little Penguins[edit]

Hi Danimations, Thanks for the link for the Neptune Island Lighthouse. BTW, I have started a draft for a separate article about the Neptune Island Lighthouse as I have found a lot of specific material since I started ‘improving’ the Neptune Islands article in mid-2012. Feedback needed on using special characters[edit]

Hello. Thank you so much for using VisualEditor. Having editors use it is the best way for the Wikimedia Foundation to develop it into the best tool it can be.

While we always welcome general feedback (please report any issues in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product or drop your feedback on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org), the developers are especially interested right now in feedback on the special character inserter. This new tool is used for inserting special characters (including symbols like ₥, IPA pronunciation symbols, mathematics symbols, and characters with diacritics). It is intended to help people whose computers do not have good character inserters. For example, many Mac users prefer to use the extensive "Special Characters…" tool present at the bottom of the Edit menu in all applications or to learn the keyboard shortcuts for characters like ñ and ü.

The current version of the special characters tool in VisualEditor is very simple and very basic. It will be getting a lot of work in the coming weeks and months. It does not contain very many character sets at this time. (The specific character sets can be customized at each Wikipedia, so that each project could have a local version with the characters it wants.) But the developers want your ideas at this early stage about ways that the overall concept could be improved. I would appreciate your input on this question, so please try out the character inserter and tell me what changes to the design would (or would not!) best work for you.

Issues you might consider:

Do you normally use a character inserter? Which character sets are useful to you? Should it include all 18 of the character sets provided in the wikitext editor's newer toolbar at the English Wikipedia, the 10 present in the older editor toolbar, or some other combination of character sets?
How many special characters would you like to see at one time?
- Should there be a "priority" or "favorites" section for the 10 or 12 characters that most editors need most often? Is it okay if you need an extra click to go beyond the limited priority set?
- How should the sections be split up? Should they be nested? Ordered?
- How should the sections be navigated? Should there be a drop-down? A nested menu?
The wikitext editor has never included many symbols and characters, like ℗ and ♀. Do you find that you need these missing characters? If the character inserter in VisualEditor includes hundreds or thousands of special characters, will it be overwhelming? How will you find the character you want? What should be done for users without enough space to display more than a few dozen characters?
Should the character inserter be statically available until dismissed? Should it hover near the mouse? Should it go away on every selection or 10 seconds after a selection with no subsequent ones?
Some people believe that the toolbar already has too many options—how would you simplify it?

The developers are open to any thoughts on how the special character inserter can best be developed, even if this requires significant changes.

The extent of Encounter Bay[edit]

Hi Danimations, This is a courtesy message. For some time, I have been looking for information about the maritime boundaries that apply in South Australia, in particular, the sea-ward limits of the two gulfs, Investigator Strait and Backstairs Passage. Earlier this week, I found a proclamation made under the Seas and Submerged Lands Act 1973 in 2006 that describes the extent of the following four bays - Anxious Bay, Encounter Bay, Lacepede Bay and Rivoli Bay - please refer Explanatory Statement Seas and Submerged Lands (Historic Bays) Proclamation 2006. The proclamation itself (please refer Proclamation 2006) contains coordinates for the sea-ward limits for the four above-mentioned bays which I was able to plot onto charts. Of immediate interest, is Encounter Bay whose most westerly point of the sea-ward limit is the south tip of Rosetta Head (aka The Bluff) with the most easterly point being a point on the Younghusband Peninsula. This means that West Island ceased to be in Encounter Bay as of 15 February 2006 according to Australian authorities (including SA). Accordingly, I have just edited both the Encounter Bay and West Island articles to reflect this situation. Trust the above explanation is satisfactory. The story with the two gulfs appears to a bit different; I am still working thru this item. These were apparently declared in 1983 as being waters internal to SA along with several other bays under the Seas and Submerged Lands Act 1973. The four historic bays listed above were done separately after 1983 at the express request of the SA government. Protected areas of South Australia[edit]

Hi Danimations, I refer to your recent edit of Protected areas of South Australia. I have the following comments. Firstly, the “American River, Kangaroo Island” - the American River Aquatic Reserve protects the waters of Pelican Lagoon while the Pelican Lagoon Conservation Park protects the islands (presumably above low water) and some adjoining land on the small peninsula to the north of the lagoon. The extent of the aquatic reserve is shown on http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0019/65413/13._AqResWeb.pdf while the extent of the Pelican Lagoon Conservation Park can be viewed on Nature Maps. In effect, the two protected areas complement each other; this is what the Pelican Lagoon Conservation Park article states. Therefore, the entry for ‘American River, Kangaroo Island’ needs to be restored. Secondly, the ‘Great Australian Bight Marine Park, far west coast’ - the link is to the former Commonwealth Government controlled reserve. It needs to be changed to the Great Australian Bight Marine National Park. The Commonwealth Park management plan advises in the Foreword that ‘The State Marine Park, in the State (coastal) waters of the Bight, combines a whale sanctuary established under the Fisheries Act 1982 (SA) and a marine national park established under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 (SA)’. It would appear that the State Marine Park is the ‘‘Far West Coast Marine Park’ and that the aquatic reserve may be the ‘Great Australian Bight Marine Park Whale Sanctuary’. However, the management plan for the ‘Far West Coast Marine Park’ does have the words ‘Great Australian Bight aquatic reserve’ on a number of the maps at the back of the plan - please refer http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/files/775d4df7-c35a-4e04-a510-a1170099e60c/mp-gen-1farwestcoast-managementplan.pdf. Thirdly, West Island Aquatic Reserve is not in Gulf St Vincent, it is either in the Great Australian Bight (i.e. the international view) or the Southern Ocean (i.e. the Australian Government’s view). I noticed that the Wikipedia aligns with the former position - somewhere within the Wikipedia, I did see a discussion which resolved to go with the international view. If you wish to reply to the above, please place it on this page so that the discussion does not extent to multiple pages. I have added this page to my wishlist in order to see any reply that you may make. I will remove the page from my watchlist after the conclusion of any discussion re the above. Thanks for the detailed response, Cowdy001. Here's my response to your three points (you may have already noted that the section on the page in question has already been revised with your feedback implemented).

1) It appears that PIRSA refers to the aquatic reserve by both 'American river Aquatic Reserve' and 'Pelican Lagoon Aquatic Reserve'. As such I've amended the list to read American River/Pelican Lagoon, Kangaroo Island. Do you know which is the current gazetted title? Apparently it was re-declared in 2007.

2) I've removed the link to the GAB park, as I was and am still unfamiliar with this territory. I simply added a link (which I've since removed) and I admit that link was made in haste.

3) I've revised West Island to acknowledge Southern Ocean as the locale, not Gulf St. Vincent. I have concerns regarding use of either Southern Ocean or Great Australian Bight as locales for this, as there are two West Islands in South Australia, the other being found on the far west coast of Eyre Peninsula.

Rabbit Island[edit]

Hi Danimations, Thanks for your message. I suggest the following approach. Delete the “disambiguation” section from your article, transfer the content to the disambiguation page called Rabbit Island and put in a new heading called “Australia” which is easily justified as there are 14 Rabbit Islands in Australia. Then, add a hatnote to the head of your article stating that your article is about the Rabbit Island in Louth Bay. Hi Danimations, firstly , in response to your message on my talk page, I found 14 Rabbit Islands within Australia using the Geoscience Australia's Place Names Search. Secondly, I have decided to place the following comments about the article here rather than on the article's talk page. The following has been added to the article: hatnote, “dmy date” & “Australian English” templates, infobox, “convert” templates, a link to National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972, DEFAULTSORT, and “Category:Spencer Gulf”. I also added two citations in order to support the location of the island within both Louth Bay and Lincoln National Park and upgraded the title of the Property Location Browser citation to avoid criticism of the reliability of the source. I also added a “R with possibilities” template to the redirect Louth Bay redirect to ensure the possibility of starting of an article about the bay in the future. I have a comment about statement that the French name given to the island presumably by the Baudin expedition is an 'alternative name". Strictly speaking, “alternative names’ do not exist under the Geographical Names Act 1991 where the only arrangement for two names to exist for one geographical name is a class called “dual geographical name” which consists of an aboriginal place name and another name assigned by the Minister (presumably a name of European origin). The Place Names (Gazetteer) on that Property Location Browser indicates that “Ile Raynal” is classed as a “Recorded (Historical) name - applied to minor cultural features that no longer exist, or to the former name of any feature that could be classified as GEOG or RECD that has had its name changed”. FYI, the Baudin expedition, published its findings before Flinders did in 1814. The second edition of the Baudin expedition report which was published circa 1826 restored all of the names given by Flinders, presumably in response to the international criticism of its action not to acknowledge that Flinders (and possibly others such as Grant) had ‘discovered’ a large part of the South Australian coastline before it did and especially as Flinders had generously provided details of his discoveries to Baudin in April 1802 including where to find food and water. I suspect this is the reason why “Ile Raynal” is listed on the Place Names (Gazetteer) as being the “previous name” because it was the name in use within the European part of the world prior to its withdrawal. Reference errors on 24 April[edit]

I'm very impressed by the extent and general quality of your work. But I'm not sure all of the individual bios would meet the notability requirements, and I've nominated a few of them for deletion, but I don't mean that as a challenge to your work in general. I do have two specific points: First, you are frequently using phrases such as "considered the most important" -- these sort of indications of quality or importance are best avoided altogether, for the article should show the importance from the positions and the awards. As a minimum, they need a reliable third party source. Second, it's the normal order for a bio to first give the general bio material including the education, then the successive positions in chronological order, and then describe the person's accomplishments, followed by publications and awards. Putting the bio material at the end is the standard style for press releases, not encycopedia articles. I know you're not doing press releases, but covering a large industry in a npov manner, but you still need to avoid giving the impression. DGG ( talk ) 22:06, 12 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Danimations. Following on an old request at WP:CP following the listings above, I have been reviewing some of your other content. I've found a few articles that closely paraphrase their sources to one degree or another including a couple that could not be fixed in the moment and have had to be blanked in part or entirely for rewriting: Silex Systems and Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission. It seems quite clear to me that you are working in good faith, particularly as you seem to scrupulously cite your sources. The bot did not find any issue in any article I evaluated that came from an uncited source. But it is really critical that you ensure that content you add meets the requirement of WP:C and WP:NFC. Wikipedia:Copy-paste has a high level overview of our copyright policies, but, in a nutshell, unless you can verify that the source is public domain or compatibly licensed (in which case content must be handled as described at Wikipedia:Plagiarism), content should be written in your own words and structure aside from brief and clearly marked quotations. --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 23:06, 1 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am concerned that your contributions thus far to the encyclopedia have been dominated by subtraction of vast swathes of referenced content, which should have been individually appraised and in most cases, I would argue, moved rather than removed from the encyclopedia entirely. Your eagerness to remove the WP:SPA tag is also concerning, since it was and continues to be an accurate description of your wikipedia contributions to date. This is not unwarranted "personal tagging" but an accurate description of your account's status at the time you made those comments. Hi Danimations, I have some suggestions. Firstly, the inclusion of sections about “Role and origins” and “History” (or maybe “History and achievements”) would be helpful. A possible source of information is the six annual reports for the Premier's Climate Change Council which can be downloaded from the DEWNR website. Just paste “Premier's Climate Change Council’ into the search box on the home page. Secondly, with respect to the “Membership” section, content explaining from what sectors of the community the members are sourced from should be added. Also, the “dot point” lists should be converted into a paragraph of names in alphabetical order with the words “(chair)” after the person who currently has this responsibility. I suggest this for two reasons - firstly, the ‘lists’ do dominate the article and secondly, as the article does not appear to be intended to be a list as per WP guidance. An update from the Sustainability Initiative[edit]

Hi, Danimations! Thank you again for supporting the Sustainability Initiative, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement. Over the past two years, more than 200 Wikipedians from all over the world have come together to push the Wikimedia movement towards greater sustainability.

What's new?

We are writing you this message because there is great news: The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has finally passed a resolution stating that the Foundation is committed to seeking ways to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment. Also, we have created a cool logo and found a nice name for the project which you can see on the right :-)

What's next?

Currently, we are working with Wikimedia Foundation staff to make sustainability a key priority for the selection of a new location for Wikimedia servers in Singapore. Also, we have presented the Wikimedia Foundation with a green energy roadmap to have all Wikimedia servers run on renewable energy by 2019.

Ways to improve Tony Webb (social scientist)[edit]

Hi, I'm Hydronium Hydroxide. Danimations, thanks for creating Tony Webb (social scientist)!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. It isn't clear that article subject meets either general or subject-specific (WP:NACADEMIC, WP:NAUTHOR) notability guidelines. A promising line might be the books (WP:NBOOK) -- if significant coverage from reliable sources could be shown, then that would suffice. Of the sources that are currently there, the only possibly independent coverage of Webb is the GLW article (and there could be some debate on its reliability, and it's really about irradiation rather than Webb).

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Fair Use in Australia campaign update[edit]

I'm writing you this followup message, as you took the time to list your comment regarding a Wikipedia banner campaign for the introduction of Fair Use in Australia.

After much planning and coordination with the WMF, Australian Digital Alliance, and Electronic Frontiers Australia, as of Monday the banner-campaign is active on English Wikipedia to a portion of logged-out readers in Australia (technical details). The banners direct people to this page on Meta: FairCopyrightOz. That page, alongside lots of information, further directs people towards the campaign website faircopyright.org.au where Australians are invited to write to their local MP to express support of Fair Use. If you are interested in supporting this campaign, please, send a letter yourself using the template letter provided at that link.

Furthermore, and with the support of the ADA & EFA, we have received fantastic media coverage - with article "Fair Use: Wikipedia targets Australians in bid to change the law" appearing on page 2 of the Sydney Morning Herald and page 10 of the Melbourne Age on Monday's edition. It was for a time the 3rd most read article the Fairfax website, and Fair Use was "trending" on Twitter in Australia. We are running the account @FairCopyrightOz on twitter, and we are tracking other press-mentions on the talkpage on Meta.

Today, day 2, we published a detailed post about the campaign on the Wikimedia Blog, ran an "Ask Me Anything" Q&A session on the Australia page in Reddit, and [by happy coincidence of timing] the article History of fair use proposals in Australia appeared on the en.wp mainpage as a Did You Know. [The creation of that "history of..." article was a specific request arising from in the community consultation in which you voted].

And, most importantly, in a little more than a day nearly 800 letters to MPs have been sent encouraging them to support the Productivity Commission's recommendation to adopt Fair Use in Australia. I urge you - please add your own message.

I noticed an edit of yours that included the unusual word 'troupes' with regard to "Boy Scouts". Unusual in that by far the more usual word would be 'troops'. Searching using Google does find occurrences of "Boy Scout" and 'troupe'/'troupes', but most often it is in an article/page title, with the text (more easily corrected?) containing 'troop'. Strange.

Hallo, when you created Rachel Noble you linked to the disambiguation page at Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet instead of the intended page at Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (Australia). I've fixed it.

There's a very useful "gadget" you can instal which alerts you when you link to a disambiguation page: if you go to "Preferences", "Gadgets", and look 5th from the bottom of the "Appearance" section there's "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange". Tick that, and it does what it says. I find it really helpful. (It's also always worth checking every link you create, anyway, just in case it doesn't lead where you expect it to: it may be a blue link but leading to a primary topic which isn't what, or who, you intended). Hallo, Thank you for creating Claye (musician) . When you create an article like this with a "disambiguated" title, please make sure that the reader can find it from the basic name (ie Claye ), by adding or expanding a hatnote, or adding the article to a disambiguation page. This helps the reader to find the new article, and also reduces the chance of a future careless editor creating a duplicate article with a slightly different disambiguator. I've fixed this one: I created a disambiguation page at Claye, overwriting the redirect to Will Claye, but a simpler solution would have been to follow that redirect and then add {{redirect|Claye|the reggae musician|Claye (musician)}} to the top of Will Claye, to which "Claye" redirected until I changed it just now.
