Question

David, concerning my article, [1] , I could not find a "Talk" page for it. Has a "Talk" page been created for it, although it has not yet been posted as an article on Wikipedia?

Second question, is it still required of me to add the template {{OTRS pending}} on that "Talk" page (if it exists)?

What now must I do to have my article published on Wikipedia? Davidbena (talk) 13:50, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

I'm not a copyright expert. If you look at Wikipedia:Copyrights there are links to numerous pages with more detail, & some will hopefully give you an idea of where you can get information from the experts.
To link (within Wikipedia) to a Wikipedia page, in general you shouldn't use an internet url like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Davidbena/sandbox/Yemenite_Ketubba, but instead you can use a wikilink like [[User:Davidbena/sandbox/Yemenite Ketubba]], which will display as User:Davidbena/sandbox/Yemenite Ketubba. At the top of that page you should see a redlink labelled "Talk", and if you click on that it will allow you to start a talk page.
If you are convinced that you want your draft reviewed in its current state, you can put {{subst:submit}} at the top of it, and that will then submit it to the article for creation review process. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:10, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
Note also that if you wish to refer to a template, rather than apply it to the page on whih you wish to include the mention, you can either surround the template name with <nowiki>...</nowiki> tags, as <nowiki>{{OTRS pending}}</nowiki> (which I did in your question above to remove this talk page from the categories into which the template had put it), or use {{tl|OTRS pending}} which renders as {{OTRS pending}}. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:17, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, David. Your answers have been greatly helpful! God bless! Davidbena (talk) 15:09, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

It was a malfunction of the Teahouse talkback script, & this is at least the third time that it's happened. I'd be interested to know why. While you were tagging it as db-test I was tagging it db-author. - David Biddulph (talk) 15:18, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

just a liitle ?? on my article

i saw you deleted the link at the top, my mistake, but since you were into the article twice, thougth you might have some ideas on how to have it accepted.

I am the only one to ever truly document the hisotic center of quito, and in the end will have it all mapped out and on wikipedia Someone who did not accept it mentioned that my submission does not appear to be written in the formal tone expected of an encyclopedia article. Can you give me some suggestions, what do you think can be made better? What about the neutral point of view? Ideas? There are referenced sources, are there not enough?? I would like to re-write and have it accepted but would like to know how..

if you can give a hand great... Thanks so much and have a great day!

Talk:River Thames Summary

Hi, Thanks for that feedback. I agree with the point about the London Boroughs now being used to define the London area. But that part of the Thames referred to as "The London Stretch" in this article is entirely tidal- even if does not cover all of London. Its important to make this distinction for several reasons including, the type of water it contains ( salt versus fresh), the navigation rules and the governing body, to name but three.1stcanalman (talk) 10:24, 3 October 2013 (UTC)1stcanalman

There are obviously numerous ways in which "London" could be interpreted (and are interpreted in this & various other articles, including that on London itself). I was using London in the sense defined in the map in the infobox, and in most of the references to London in the article which cover an area much bigger than the City of London. I agree that for a variety of purposes the tidal boundary (or the PLA's jurisdiction boundary which is very close thereto) is a relevant subdivision, and of course we have sections within the article on The tidal section and on The tidal river, and a separate article on the Tideway. It would, however, be misleading to say "Its tidal section includes all of its London stretch" without making it clear that "London" is here being used in a different sense to that in which it is used elsewhere in the article, and of course to define the "London stretch" as being the tidal stretch would be a circular argument in this sentence. - David Biddulph (talk) 11:10, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi, apologies, that is perfectly clear and a valid reasoning that is not enough to change any minds. It is wrong to describe this section as anything but tidal and worse to make this error on the back of another i.e. the incomplete definition of London. 1stcanalman (talk) 11:39, 9 October 2013 (UTC)1stcanalman

English unit inter-language links

Hi David,

Please undo your reinstatement of inter-language links.

Before you do so , please follow the German link de:Angloamerikanisches Maßsystem. You will see that it links to English language article Imperial and US customary measurement systems. Please note that Anglo-American system of units also links to this English-language article. If you read through the German article, you will see that the text "(UK)" and "(US)" occurs a number of times. You might wish to double-check this on other language articles. The French and Dutch articles certainly refer to "Anglo-American" rather than the pre-1824 "English" units. Martinvl (talk) 07:48, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

If you were removing the links because you believed that they were inappropriate links, that would have been something that you could have said in your edit summary. You edit summary, hoever, said "Inter-language links are handled centrally", whhich gave the impression that that you were removing them because identical links already existed in Wikidata. You will be aware that there are many cases where Wikidata doesn't fully handle the links, particularly where there isn't a one-to-one correspondence between articles in one language and those in another. If you wish to remove one or more of the links which other editors have added, I suggest that you explain why you believe them to be inappropriate, either in the edit summary or on the article talk page. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:57, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
If you look at items 27 and 28 of the Wikidata FAQ page you will see that they expect links to follow a one-to-one correspondence. I agree that this is not totally satisfactory, but the way to sort it out is through Wikidata, not by adding items to this page. Martinvl (talk) 12:32, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
Yes, Wikidata can only deal with one-to-one correspondence at present, so unless & until Wikidata changes (and I'm not holding my breath), the extra links are provided locally. Help:Interlanguage links#Adding a new link says:
"Unfortunately, there is no mechanism in Wikidata at present for linking articles which are related, but different in scope; it is possible to do it with local links."
Help:Interlanguage links#Local links says:
"Before Wikidata, Interlanguage links had to be recorded in the text of the page itself. The problem with this approach was that each language had to maintain its own separate lists. So for example, if the name of a page on the English Wikipedia changed, then each language that linked to that page would have to separately notice this fact and then change their own links.
For most pages, these links are no longer needed and can be safely removed, but you should verify that the local list and the Wikidata lists match before doing so."
... (my emphasis on the last clause). - David Biddulph (talk) 13:22, 10 October 2013 (UTC)
OK, as long as they are one-way links only. Martinvl (talk) 15:57, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you and more help?

Hello David--Thank you for your response to my help desk posting. I've fixed the link so it refers to the database entry for the "Tom Taylor" stradivarius. You pointed out a state of confusion regarding my user talk page and user name(s). I'm not very skilled at working WP and I think that at some time in the past I had a user page titled RMcGuigan but wanted it to be Robert McGuigan and some generous person set up the redirect for me. Unfortunately it seems to have made a mess of my contributions and talk pages. I'd appreciate it if you could suggest a way to make things less confusing.

By the way, are you related to Peter Biddulph, a well-known expert on and dealer in fine violins? RMcGuigan (talk) 19:55, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

Just log on to the Robert McGuigan account, instead of RMcGuigan, and edit from there. You can put a note on your Robert McGuigan user page to say that you previously edited as RMcGuigan, & then people will be able to find your previous contributions. No, as far as I'm aware I don't have any relatives in the violin business. - David Biddulph (talk) 20:08, 14 October 2013 (UTC)

It's sometimes difficult to work out times of day, and answers to previous questions will often save other users from having to ask the same question so that's why they stay and are then archived. While you're here, another editor has pointed out that you deleted a message that you had posted to Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files/2013 October 18. I see that you have updated the file details today to confirm that you are not the copyright holder, so the file will presumably be deleted in due course. - David Biddulph (talk) 17:48, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

N94228

He or she apparently thinks that he or she is a WP:DIVA and that the threat to leave Wikipedia will cause the article to be left standing. My own guess is that the author is notable, and that the OP should ask for assistance in finding reliable sources rather than making idle threats to leave Wikipedia and idle accusations of vandalism. My own guess also is that the OP will eventually be blocked, and no one else will care, and the article should not be speedy-deleted, but that an AFD challenge to find a reliable source is in order and is likely to get the article fixed. If you want to do tests, you can do that in your sandbox, or in another subpage in your user space. We realize that you've only got a day or so's editing experience and fewer than 200 edits so you've still got a lot to learn. That is why you shouldn't yet be thinking that you can help other users in roles such as Teahouse host, AFC reviewer, or as an adopter. Your first step is to learn for yourself how Wikipedia works. Study the various guidelines and get practice in how to do make edits yourself. When you've built up some experience, then you can start to think about trying to advise others. - David Biddulph (talk) 19:57, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

David, you asked the location of the discussion. I have 3 editors helping me, and I am asking if this group is a fringe group or a significant minority opinion group. I am advocating for the latter, but am still trying to understand the rules. It is wonderful how you can get people to work through a question like this with an open mind if you bring data, and it helps me understand how Wikipedia stays consistent through these kinds of consensus decisions.

Hi David,

on December, 27 I edited the Wikipedia articles Software Engineer and Software Engineering, and you reversed my changes 2 hours later, giving "rv unsourced commentary" as the reason.

The changes I entered described the situation that software engineers are not able yet to measure the materials they work on, i.e. the knowledge going into their software and the knowledge represented by the software they write.

Could you please let me know what you think would be the right way to add this information to Wikipedia?

Hi David. I posted comments on this on the Teahouse and should be grateful if you could take a look. I really feel that this is a notable publication (I've been reading it for 25 years) and that it merits an article without further delay. Thanks Roundtheworld (talk) 08:53, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Re help desk

Re my query about earlier versions of Wiki articles (see help desk)

Thanks, David, for your prompt reply. No, you didn't misunderstand my query and I have found what I was after. I am not sure if I should be posting this reply here or on the help desk, but here goes. My question concerned my first foray into Wiki editing and there was a lot to wade through on the site about editing/help desks, and I cannot think why I didn't do the obvious and click on "History" as you suggested. I think it was a case of not being able to see the wood for the trees! Many thanks.

PS For some reason I can't make the heading here show up in the right way, sorry! P123cat1 (talk) 13:12, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

If you want to add a section heading ahead of your text, either use the "New section" button to add the section, or precede your text with
== Whatever you want your section heading to be ==
as the equal signs delineate the heading. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:28, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

Pending changes screwup

For some reason, even though you are a reviewer, your last revert on recycling was marked as "pending" but there was no place to accept your change (probably because you are a reviewer). Then when I displayed all pending changes to the article, it showed you as adding the offending material you tried to revert. So I reverted the last 3 edits including yours.

So don't be distressed at seeing that you were reverted in the edit summary. I never liked this pending changes mechanism. It's clunky even when it works. ~Amatulić (talk) 15:39, 28 February 2014 (UTC)

Emomalii Rahmon (we should change the first name)

Hi, i saw that you removed the correction of my correction of the first name of the president on the tajikistan page. I also saw your note about Emomalii Rahmon. I beleive we should change that to Emomali Rahmon (only 1 i) as per the official biography on http://president.tj/en/taxonomy/term/5/21 or http://president.tj/en/ (then scroll down and click biography). I'm not a major wikipedia editor and don't know how to do this. can you assist?

Adding Badges?

I can leave a message, here but is there another way to ping? I want to add a badge that says I live in California like you have on your page, how can I add badges? Apriv40dj (talk) 18:55, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

One of the easiest ways of finding userboxes is to look at similar ones which you like, & then looking through the relevant categories. For example my user page includes {{User HampshireCounty}}, so if you look at Template:User HampshireCounty you will see (at the foot of the page) that it is in Category:English county of residence user templates. That, in turn, is in Category:Region of residence user templates. From there you will see that there is a Category:US state of residence user templates, and in there you can choose between a number of userboxes relevant to California. Some of those have multiple options; Template:User in California, for example, has dozens of variants, and you could choose the one which you prefer. --David Biddulph (talk) 20:58, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

I am not getting any notification's from my tea house replies. Every morning I expected to see a bunch of replies and get nothing. I did not know you had posted this, but just now I got three notification of radioactive carbon dating or global warming or some other question that is not my question and I took no part in the discussion. Then I had to go and find this post that was archived or I would have missed it entirely. But, I did save that information, I just wonder if take the html of a badge is that stealing a badge and will that person mind? If I see a badge on tennis and want to take and add to my page how will I know if the user will get mad at me for doing that? Some people don't mind and some will get very upset. I will try to add that easy badge for California as a start that is listed above. Apriv40dj (talk) 02:19, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

If you ask a question on a page, it is wise to keep that page on your watchlist so that you can keep an eye open for replies. As far as userboxes are concerned, the files in the Templates: namespace are there to be used. If someone has produced a userbox in their own user space you can still link to it, though they might subsequently delete it from their userspace so the link from your page would then fail. If you are talking of taking someone else's userbox code and using that to develop a different userbox, that would still be permitted, but you ought to include a comment to credit them for the code you are using. In general it is less confusing if you use Wikipedia's terminology to refer to things; Wikipedia calls the "userboxes", not "badges". - David Biddulph (talk) 02:54, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Meon Valley Railway

What is going on with the Meon Valley is not at present to be put in the public domain. However, this does NOT mean the group is defunct - FAR from it! The statement about it having disbanded is and always was completely erroneous and, if allowed to remain, would risk significant damage to the project. I will remove it one last time and I request that no attempt is made to reinstate it. 82.3.254.47 (talk) 03:01, 22 March 2014 (UTC)

Reimagining Mentorship proposal

Hi David. I know you spend a good deal of time helping new editors, so I wanted to bring your attention to a grant proposal under review. A small team of us want to implement a system of mentorship that focuses on the specific skills new editors want to learn and incorporates the 1-on-1 relationships from the adopt-a-user programs. Please read over our proposal here. At this stage, your feedback would be much appreciated, particularly as you work with new editors on a regular basis, and we want to make our proposal fit the community's needs. You can leave comments on the grant talk page, and if you like the proposal, please feel free to add your endorsement at the bottom of the page.

In addition, we are gathering information and attitudes from experienced editors on the current ways new editors can get help. If you are interested, please consider taking our brief survey here. Thanks very much, I, JethroBT drop me a line 05:45, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Help

I wandered into the article Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Neubauer Family Collegium for Culture and Society this morning and I feel the way Alice musht have feld after she walked throught hte lookign glass. I went back to add some more info, and I cannot seem to access the page to add more sources. I see that you name is on the page as it now stands. I see that the article is being continuously denied, although it has many reliable sources, not only local papers like the The Chicago maroon but national ones like The Chronicle of Philanthropy and http://www.universitybusiness.com/

Can you explain what is going on here? To me notability does not seem to be in question. To the extent that it is written "like an advertisement", that can surely be quickly corrected. To me, this feels like a confusing and unfriendly process. A.Jacobin — Preceding unsigned comment added by A.Jacobin (talkcontribs) 18:25, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

I haven't looked at the content. All I did was restore the previous feedback which had been deleted. That stays to help reviewers and those trying to improve the draft, & to allow resubmission when ready. The feedback templates will be removed if and when the draft is accepted for publication. I can't see anything stopping anyone from making further edits; the page is not protected. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:39, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
I now see that you have done a cut-and-paste move of the page to Neubauer Family Collegium for Culture and Society. This is not permitted because of the legal requirement to preserve the attribution of the content, so I have tagged the article accordingly. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:51, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Weapons Law Encyclopaedia

Hi, You just deleted my page Weapons Law Encyclopaedia on Copyrights issues. I however have the authorization of the company to take their content. Shoudl I change the text a bit? Also, to do so could I retrieve the content I had inserted, because it did take me some time to make.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tatiana155 (talkcontribs) 23:15, 8 May 2014 (UTC)

I didn't delete it; it was deleted by an administrator because Wikipedia cannot publish copyrighted material without an appropriate licence. You had been warned earlier in the day about the use of copyrighted material. The message on your user talk page explains the process by which a copyright owner can donate copyrighted material, and in his reply to you Discospinster explains that you can find the material again on the web pages from which you copied it. You do, however, need to write things in your own words, because an organization's web page is usually written in promotional language, not in the neutral point of view which Wikipedia requires. One of the replies to your original help desk message gave an example of such unacceptable language, and another reply reminded you of the need to base the article on references to coverage of the subject in published reliable sources independent of the subject; at first glance most of the mentions of the Weapons Law Encyclopaedia that I can find are based on press releases for the project launch, so would not be acceptable. I have put some further useful links on your user talk page, including to WP:Your first article. --David Biddulph (talk) 04:32, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Draft submission

I have successfully resubmitted my draft and it says Review waiting. I sincerely appreciate your time and effort to help me. Thank you. Madhuravp (talk) 16:36, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

I see that you didn't take my advice about looking at the references. Although you may be lucky and get the draft accepted, in general you will probably find that reviewers will be quicker to review drafts with proper inline citation, so you may find yourself waiting for a month or two, and at that stage they may reject it and ask you to reference it properly. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:44, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Quick note about your Teahouse answers

Hi,

I notice that you've been answering questions at the teahouse for several months. Many of your answers are good, but there are a few that are unhelpful to the OPs. For instance, in this thread, you just provided a bare policy link. Teahouse etiquette generally encourages attempting to explain the answers to people's questions instead of pointing them to a complex and sometimes lengthy page to read through. This is especially important since most guests at the teahouse are newbies. You've also often just left {{welcome}} on the talk pages of guests, which isn't really a way to answer people's questions. Again, most of your answers are okay, and I'm just providing you a few pointers to help you contribute even better there. --Jakob (talk) 17:15, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Happy to let you answer in the way in which you prefer. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:01, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Template:2014 World Junior Championships in Athletics

There are apparently two templates with the same name. Look at the mens 100 and the women's 100. You will find the women's goes to the template you corrected, the men's does not. I can't find a fix. Tried the double article route until a solution was found. We still have two Men's 10,000 articles with and without comma due to the double templates. Trackinfo (talk) 10:33, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Both 2014 World Junior Championships in Athletics – Women's 100 metres and 2014 World Junior Championships in Athletics – Men's 100 metres point at {{2014 World Junior Championships in Athletics}}. I can't see any other template. You have both articles because you created them both, but nothing of significance now points at 2014 World Junior Championships in Athletics – Men's 10000 metres as I have removed all the relevant incoming links, so I've redirected it to the correct one. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:46, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

Bedford Modern School

David, I see that you've modified the foundation date for Bedford Modern School in the infobox on the BMS Wiki page. If that's changed, shouldn't two categories at the bottom of the page, "Educational institutions established in the 1560s" and "1566 establishments in England", be exchanged for "Educational institutions established in the 1760s" and "1764 establishments in England" ? There seems to be confusion as to whether the school was established in 1566 or 1764. If it's accepted that the foundation date is 1764, then the categories should also reflect that fact, shouldn't they ? All the best. (Vietnamvat (talk) 10:06, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

We don't generally delete old page titles, particularly when they've been in use for some time. The page is now a redirect to the new title. There are numerous user talk pages which link to the old page, & the redirect will show users where the page now is; it wouldn't be correct to change the wording of those links. I believe that I have removed any links to the old title from within articles; in particular I changed the template which was use in a large number of articles. --David Biddulph (talk) 07:57, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Your draft is there in the review queue. I converted the partial url in your question into a wikilink which you can follow. You can also find it in your contributions page. It is listed at Category:AfC submissions by date/14 December 2014, so I don't know why you couldn't see it there. As it says in the review box on the draft, "There are 2987 submissions waiting for review.", so you may well have to wait for more than a month. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:37, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
The page history [14] shows an unregistered user removed the AFC submission templates.[15] I restored them [16] before David's post and will contact the user. Thanks for posting the problem. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:42, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Thank you David Biddulph and also Prime Hunter for your thoughtful response and efforts to explain and assist. Much appreciated, since I am still rather new to how these things work and the various processes.Publico2020 (talk) 20:29, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Post counties

Hello. I've realised that yes, it was my mistake about the post towns. I completely forgot about the new Royal Mail shake up. Leave the job to me, I'll remove what I wrote, or put it into the history section. --TransportJone (talk) 16:30, 25 December 2014 (UTC)

Your reversion to Cassiobridge

Re. your reversion of my latest edit - I know "we don't just remove dead URLs"! I did spend quite a bit of time trying in vain to find the dead URL on Watford Council website, and on the Web Archive but it is not available! However, I see you have managed to find a live version which is great, thank you. Cnbrb (talk) 13:18, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Google is your friend. :-) --David Biddulph (talk) 13:26, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
Tried that too!! It only came up with blank documents! Cnbrb (talk) 16:57, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Regarding deletion of Beyond the Page Theatre Company of West Potomac High School and the hangon tag

There's no need to make comments that start with "I don't know how many more times you need to be told." I'm still trying to figure out how to use wikipedia and these types of comments aren't helpful. If you could provide me with specific information on how to improve my page, that would be greatly appreciated. --Emma.norville (talk) 16:16, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Emma.norville — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emma.norville (talkcontribs) 16:12, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

We understand that you're new to Wikipedia, but in that situation you need to read and understand the advice that you are given on your user talk page and in the edit summaries on any pages that you are editing. Don't just ignore the advice. Similarly, if you don't understand the meaning of the tags on a page, you shouldn't be removing them. On Christine Flowers it was blatantly obvious that the {{orphan}} and {{no footnotes}} tags were valid, and now that I've looked a bit further I see no reason to doubt the validity of the {{COI}} and {{autobiography}} tags. If you want to remove such tags, you'll need to provide a clear explanation for why you wish to do so. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:29, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

The edits on the Christine Flowers page were an accident. I didn't mean to edit that page. The hangon tag was a result of me googling how to avoid having my page deleted before I'm finished with it. I'm a student in high school, so my edits will be spaced out. I apologize for not being able to fix everything immediately. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Emma.norville (talkcontribs) 16:52, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

No big deal but

For instance in Sweden is "nm" used along with "distansminut". "Nm" (and "NM") is an error though, and means Newton-meter (unit for torque). A capital "N" always stands for "Newton" (unit for force) within physics. This may be a "cultural crash" but shouldn't we explain things globally. I let You decide, but I don't agree. Cheers Boeing720 (talk) 03:03, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

N m (with a space) means Newton-metre. NM doesn't. Nautical_mile#Unit_symbol explains it. --David Biddulph (talk) 03:14, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Deletion discussion of article to which you contributed

I have nominated the article Luiz Palhares for deletion because this martial arts teacher lacks notability. You have edited this article in the past and so I thought you might be interested. You may discuss this nomination here: View AfD(Californiatitan (talk) 21:26, 19 January 2015 (UTC))

Shall I move it to userspace? I intended to merge two articles into one. The draft is opposed by one sole user. For more details, see Talk:2 May 2014 Odessa clashes. --George Ho (talk) 10:02, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Whether it is in userspace or in Draft space, if it has been copied from another Wikipedia page the attribution needs to be provided, see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. If a merge eventually happens, then a further sorting out of the attribution would need doing at that stage, see Wikipedia:Merging. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:26, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
I copied text from two articles, heavily edited by sole editor, RGloucester. Is that enough? Must I add attribution in the draft page? (Oh, I read the guideline.) --George Ho (talk) 10:34, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your help

Hi David, thanks a lot for your advise. In fact, I did not read the full "minor changes" article. Did it now - adding references, even without changing a single word, is not a minor modification. Understood, sorry and thanks!!! Schottelanerin (talk) 10:55, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

True. There are so many pages of rules & guidance that you can't be expected to pick them all up at once. (One further small point is that new topics on talk pages go at the foot of the page rather than the top. One exception is the Teahouse questions page; for some inexplicable reason that works the opposite way round to the rest of Wikipedia.) Keep up the good work. - David Biddulph (talk) 11:13, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

MBE and the Beatles

Why did you revert my adding "Sir" to the other Beatles because of their MBE's when "Sir Paul McCartney" on here has an MBE and he is accorded "Sir". Why shouldn't the rest of the Beatles get "Sir"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by NapoleonX (talkcontribs) 17:13, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Very simple. If you read the article on Paul McCartney you will see that he has a knighthood. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:15, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

You're right, when I went back and looked at Paul McCartney's page, it mentions the MBE and the Knighthood separately. I saw an MBE behind his name and an MBE behind the other Beatles' names and thought that MBE meant Knighthood and hence "Sir." My mistake. NapoleonX (talk) 17:33, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Got a problem

I was fixing up an article on a mad scientist, and ran into a problem. Her article claims thatin 1935, she rowed for the ladies' university eight in the Women's boat race against Oxford. Any idea where we could find a source for this claim? Her name was Joan Strothers (later Lady Curran). Hawkeye7 (talk) 06:10, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Apologies for my delay in getting back to you. I have reminded myself that CUWBC wasn't founded until 1941. In the early Women's Boat Races from 1927 to 1939, Cambridge were represented by Newnham College, and I see from the article on Joan Curran that Newnham was her college. 1937 would have been the 7th race, but only the 3rd in which the crews raced side-by-side rather than being judged on style. I do have a copy of the history of NCBC covering that period and including the foundation of CUWBC, but there isn't a crew list for the 1937 crew, so I can neither confirm nor deny the report. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:15, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
Her daughter claims she rowed with the 1935 crew, not the 1937, which was the first actual race. (The claim is currently commented out of the article pending verification.) The women are being allowed to race on the same course and same day as the men as of 2015, so I'm hoping some details will come out. It seems ludicrous that we have men's records back to 1829 but no records of the women's races. Hawkeye7 (talk) 21:32, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Riffian people

Please explain your concerns and edits at talk:Riffian people. I protected the page due to the edit warring and the absence of any discussion on article talk. Vsmith (talk) 21:00, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

My questions at WP:AN3 were "So what happened firstly to the idea that 3RR is a bright line and secondly to the idea that the onus was on someone wanting to remove sourced information to discuss that removal?" --David Biddulph (talk) 21:42, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
I saw an edit war in progress with zero discussion occurring and protected to stop it. Following that I noted the discussion on the 3rr noticeboard and added the protection notice there. Now please discuss your concerns on the article talk. Vsmith (talk) 22:07, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
So no answer to either of my questions? If there has been a change of Wikipedia policy with regard to reversion, or with regard to justifying removal of sourced content, I would like to see diffs of where the policy changes were agreed. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:15, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

Key People

Key people must not be listed twice. But CEO is there for dot-com company! so should not that be used? or Should CEO be used and that name must not be in key people or what?
thanks
aGastya  ✉ let's talk about it :)

Probably makes sense to use | chairman and | CEO instead of | key_people ? --David Biddulph (talk) 17:36, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

Yes. CEO and Chairman are there as the fields in the templates and it should be used! aGastya  ✉ let's talk about it :)
