Sabiniano Manrique de Lara

Hi. Is this what completed copy-editing is suppossed to look like? Queenmomcat appears to think so and has cited this as a completed copy-edit in their stats. I came across it looking for examples of copy-editing as a few editors appear to have very loose standards in applying it. Mabuska (talk) 23:23, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

My real concern is that this user is in the top five for the Gold Star Award for number of articles, words, and 5+ articles. It'd make me feel cheated to try and do the best i can when some don't appear to try as hard but get the top rewards. Would it be wrong to reinsert a copy-edit tag into an article tagged as complete? Would is also be wrong to copy-edit an article someone has marked as complete and mark it as completed by yourself? Mabuska (talk) 12:22, 17 March 2011 (UTC)
I will ask SMasters for his input on these questions. I have started reviewing the copy edit of Liancourt Rocks dispute and found the work to be adequate but not perfect. I must of just clicked on a bad random one lol, as they do have a lot of good work done in many articles. Though what about SMK Batu Maung, or more specifically the list at the end of it? And the inconsistent list styles used for Mandanr? These are minor cases in any event, though still causes me concern when final totals are calculated for completed articles. These two were both poorly done. At the bottom of the drive page are the consequences: the editor is assessed a penalty of 1200 words plus the word count of the article. There is no mention of them losing the article count so I will leave that be for now, unless SMasters says to remove it. --Diannaa (Talk) 00:06, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay in replying. Firstly, thank you Mabuska for raising this. Obviously, the Guild is very concerned about the quality of our work as it affects our reputation as a reliable WikiProject. This is the main reason why we have a panel of reviewers for our drives. I have checked the articles mentioned here, and I agree with Diannaa. I would be extremely worried if any editors zips through the copy editing and removes the copy edit tag without much concern for quality. However, I can see that the editor concerned did do substantial work on each article, and greatly improved the articles that they worked on in terms of the scope of work related to copy editing. As such, we have to assume good faith in this instance. Copy editing is a craft that requires an extremely sharp eye for detail. Almost all of the Guild's members are not professional copy editors, and they may miss bits and pieces that a professional would spot easily. This does not necessarily make them bad copy editors, they are just not professionals and this may show in their work. Sometimes, even professionals like myself make mistakes (Diannaa can tell you this). If we sit through long editing sessions, we get tired and the quality of our work may suffer as a result. To answer your other question, as stated on the main drives page, we do not encourage anyone to create new work during a drive, i.e. put a copy edit tag on an article and then work on it. So, we prefer if editors do not copy edit the same piece as another editor. There are over 4,000 articles that need work. Time is better spent working on these. If you feel strongly about an article needing further copy editing, you can always work on these after a drive, or if it is particularly bad, you can place a new tag on the article after the drive. Working after another editor will also make it harder for us to check for quality. We will continue to monitor quality across all editors participating in the drive, to ensure fairness and also to make sure that the quality of work is kept at a high level. – SMasters (talk) 01:05, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
No problemos, i can understand and accept all of that. Thanks for the response. As a side-question, when you use the script to count the amount of words in an article, i notice that it doesn't count words that are indented or in a list. I've see some articles where hundreds of words in paragraph form are indented or in a list and the script doesn't highlight or count them thus giving what i'd term a false word count that mightn't relfect the work that went into the article. I'm not, myself, convinced that they belong, but you didn't give any explanation in your edit summary. Is that source not reliable? The info UNDUE? I think it needs review and discussing before we include any of it in the article. But it will be hard to discuss with the posting editor as he just got blocked for edit warring on another article.   • The Engvar script doesn't appear in the toolbar with the other script buttons. It lives, slightly awkwardly, in the 'scripts' drop-down in the lower section of the side bar. I will check out the url decoder. I should also mention that I have also written User:Ohconfucius/Sources.js. Unfortunately, it doesn't yet have any documentation. Please help

My brain hurts

Hi

I have a problem. I am a little disheartened as I keep getting reverted on articles I have copyedited.

Can you take a quick look at this one for me please, I will understand if you are too busy (but I also think I need a U.S. viewpoint and I believe you are Canadian?)

Basically I think it might be a UK v. US grammar problem, but am so unsure it is beginning to get to me a little - the edit summary of the first edit after my finishing did not help either though and may have upset me more than it should have done [1]. I approached it as a very sensitive article (an A class to FAC) and tried my best to apply everything from my education in the English language, everything I have learnt from editing here and from your little reviews and our discussions - yet still I am getting massive amounts of reverting [2].

This last one is really a setback, I feel as if I wasted a lot of time on a really difficult to follow and read article. Where am I going wrong? A lot of the sentences were really short and had commas in the middle - they seemed to be extremely superfluous, ", and" used in lots of places as well as "On (date), this happened", well you can see on the talk page what I said as my parting comments [[Talk:U.S. Route 131].

If you are too busy perhaps you can pass this on the Steve or another editor you know is from the U.S. - I would like to reply to one statement made and to point them to our discussion on the date comma in particular. It seems as if I am shooting myself in the foot by trying to make editors understand that if something is being done incorrectly by almost everybody it doesn't make it right :¬(

In Canada we don't have any lettered highways. We would say "Highway 2" or "Secondary Highway 623" but we would say "the Trans-Canada Highway" or "the QEW". We might say "south of town" or "south of the town". Both are used, but I think the second one is a little more formal and could be totally appropriate at the FA level. I wrote him a note about the commas. I have to be honest this chap seems a little ungrateful and brusque. I had a bad experience recently too, on Taiwan High Speed Rail. The author admitted that English was not his first language yet he was not especially amenable to advice. And then he tried to tell Jack how to code tables. Oh actually we do have some lettered highways but the letter goes after the name. When they improved the highway between Calgary and Edmonton, the old highway became Highway 2A. Same thing with Highway 1 and 1A between Calgary and Banff. --Diannaa (Talk) 03:51, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Well, at least it wasn't my imagination then, the last one was the Lympne airport, he was ok in the end though. He had reverted long sentences back to 7 & 8 word short ones - even though the FA reviewer had already specifically told him that short sentences were a no-no.
I made myself feel a little better by copyediting this little gem.
I did wonder about the out of town, in the UK it means "somewhere outside of the town" and I assumed it mean "leaving the town" due to the context it was being used in (although there were so many of them I tried to vary it a little).
A friend of mine wanted me to go over with her some years ago, she is Dene (Chipewyan and Dogrib - her words not mine) - from Yellowknife, I always preferred that side of the border, and now my brother is a naturalised U.S. citizen so I only get to visit his side lol.

You definitely should be counting it, all the work you did on it was in March for sure; and it was a request - plus you checked it and gave me that editing feedback. I made a couple of small edits on Feb 27 but put it on hold while I was discussing the dates commas (again lol) and place formats, then had to spend a couple of days back at work and on the Wiki Guides project pages and an ANI/3RR problem leading me up to the evening of the 2nd March and began the proper edits on March 3, after which you checked it over, corrected a lot and gave me the feedback. How about Scout method? I spent half a day on the first half and went back the next morning to find all my work had been undone. I was told to discuss on the talk page before doing such a major edit. Discuss with who? there hadn't been a talk page edit since 2007. It's true, this drive I have not taken credit for all my articles, but I have lots of rollover words and I am not in it for the stinkin' badges. Hi Diannaa, I see you just put a ban on User:65.8.221.157. I checked out some of the edits that were reverted by User:Fjp1995 and they don't appear to be vandalism. For example, this one[3] adds to confirmed award nominations that I checked out. and this one [4] adds writers who's names I googled and did indeed contribute to the show. I am not sure what is going on here - I have seem a busy pattern of reversion the past few days on various Phineas and Ferb related articles, with a number of contentious edits. Can you provide more information on speedy deletion of Air Ambulance Card, LLC

Hi Diannaa- A few weeks back, you nominated a new article, Air Ambulance Card, LLC for speedy deletion. It was my first article, and I based it almost exclusively on highly credible third party sources including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and US News and World Report. According to the Wikipedia guidelines for notability, I believe it meets the standard for inclusion. I am happy to revise in order to address any concerns. Hi. The article was deleted under A7: No explanation of the subject's significance (real person, animal, organization, or web content): G12: partial copy vio from http://www.technologyalabama.com/content/alabama%E2%80%99s-air-ambulances and other sites.
There were several problems with your submission. You cannot post copyright material on Wikipedia even if you are the copyright holder, unless special licensing permissions are in place. That is because Wikipedia aims to be freely distributable and copyable by anyone, and all content must have the appropriate documentation in place before that can happen. Please see this policy Wikipedia:Copyrights which explains how it works.
The second problem is notability. I am not sure the organisation is notable enough, as Wikipedia defines it, to have an article. We require write-ups in reliable third party sources such as newpapers, magazines, or online publishers to establish notability. New articles about persons or organisations that are not notable are typically speedily deleted.
The third problem is conflict of interest. Writing an article about your own organisation or that of a client is strongly discouraged, as it is difficult to maintain the required neutral point of view.
So if you wish to add the copyrighted content to a Wikipedia article, the proper licenses and permissions will have to be in place. Please see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how that would be done. Or, you could write a new article that does not closely paraphrase the material available on line. And you would have to avoid the conflict of interest guideline while doing so. Even then, chances are that the article would be speedily deleted as not notable enough for an article. After all your disruption, do you have enough nerve to accuse me of multiple reverting? You obviously broke WP:BOLDTITLE and WP:DE (the paragraph Cannot satisfy Wikipedia:Verifiability) by inserting unreferenced information and still make accusations against me? Even if what you try to allege was true, it wouldn't be a blockable offence, use "citation needed" tags next time. Or may I remove any uncited information from any article on WP?

Squash Racket, your inequitable way of applying the rules is, to use a gentle word, very interesting. When I delete an unreferenced text it is wrong, but you "may" legitimately delete a passage which is even supported by a source. I will let Diannaa to extract the conclusions about this kind of behaviour

I counted five reverts by him in 24 hours at the article Székely yesterday which is clearly a blockable offence.
What I found extremely strange that afterwards it was him who reported others who haven't broken any rule. And the misleading statements above from a couple of hours ago clearly resemble his earlier behavior for which he was indef blocked.

I won't answer anymore if it disturbs you (please indicate if that's the situation), but I feel I have to say something seeing your response.
The edit summaries were constructed so, because User:Iaaasi and his incarnations had a tendency of making false reports. I like it when administrators see the truth even when he makes a report in the evening or at night (European time) expecting that those who are not always online won't be able to react before a decision is made.
The truthfulness/honesty comment referred to misleading statements he added here on this very talk page. How would you treat this "knowledgeable editor" when he cites a deletion from a year ago with an extensive edit summary as some kind of a sneaky attack? He also cites a request for sources as his own good example, when that request was sent out two minutes before he added his comment here?

I'm quoting part of my so-called "personal opinion" at the time: "book sponsored by anti-Hungarian Romanian chauvinist Gheorghe Funar", which sounds like a legitimate reason for the removal.
The problem with Iaaasi was revert warring over the Székely flag to the point of breaking 3RR even though he knew that at least the Székely National Council uses it. If someone objects, a "citation needed" tag is put there and after waiting a couple of days it can be removed.

Your argument is subjective. The fact that the book could have been sponsored by Funar (there are no proofs for that), is not a guarantee for the fact that the text from the book is false. Inaccuracies and ill faith in the SPI against CoolKoon

Dear Diannaa,

Could you kindly tell me why haven't you notified me of the ongoing SPI against my account (even though it's customary)? I've learned of it only after it's been concluded and thus didn't have much opportunities in defending myself. I don't think that this is what a due process looks like.
Also I'm not quite sure whether it was on purpose or just plain ignorance, but some of your statements in the SPI request simply don't have anything to do with truth. Take the "Coolkoon has filed a 3RR report against Iaaasi" statement for instance. The truth is that in fact I've never filled a 3RR report. Ever. If you would've cared to check the report itself, then you would've noticed that the report you're talking about has been filed by User:Nmate. Also, the math on your claims about the Slovakia-Hungary relations edit history doesn't add up well either. If you would've done the math, you would've known that (strictly speaking) I've done 2 reverts and stopped because Iaaasi has threatened to report me for edit warring. Technically however I've only done a single revert, because prior to Iaaasi's second "revert" I've added some additional content. In the subsequent edit Iaaasi has however removed all the content I've added before (both of my edits) and that was when he threatened to report me. I've made no more edits after that. Today however I've seen that a new user called Koalicio has obviously "helped" Iaaasi to turn the whole thing into a rather nasty edit war. Later on I've seen that Iaaasi has been reported for 3RR by Nmate.
The point is that during the SPI you didn't seem to show much good faith towards me, actually quite the contrary. Or is it that WP policies are to be applied only to users, but not to admins? Sorry, CoolKoon, you are right. It was User:Nmate who filed the 3RR report. My apologies. Notification of the filing of an SPI report is not required, it is optional, at the filer's discretion. re: speedy-deletions under CSD#R2

You recently deleted User:Shadygrove2007/John William Wright, citing CSD#R2 in the edit summary. As a redirect from the Userspace to the Mainspace, it was technically ineligible for criterion R2. That criterion only applies to redirect from the Mainspace. We are trying hard to clean up the cites to the R2 clause so that it's not so widely misunderstood by new users. In this case, there was no harm done because the redirect was speedy-deletable under criterion U1 but if you could help us keep the logs clean in future situations, it would make the education process easier. I wondered if you could help me out. On my watch list there is an entry for 'Talk: Buildings in bushfire prone areas' and 'Buildings in bushfire prone areas', both on 23 March 2011. Both were deleted because of copyright infringement. (I seem to remember asking on the article's talk page what country was the article referring to, which might explain how I got involved in the first place). I thought that was an end to the matter, and that I might as well get rid of any non-needed entries. For some reason, your name is on my watch list in the 'article' column, so when I went to your page to delete it, I found that I couldn't. What do I do now?
Its not that I want to get rid of you, more a case of wanting to tidy up!

The applicable guideline is Wikipedia:Notability. It looks like Chuck Rice is not notable enough at present to qualify for a Wikipedia article as there are not multiple write-ups in reliable third-party sources such as newspapers, magazines, or trustworthy websites. Hi, thanks for volunteering your time and efforts into copy-editing the article. However, i would like to hear your opinion in this matter. I had previously changed the population figure from 2 million to 20 lakhs. This is because this is how the population is counted in India. However, some editor has been edit-warring with me using vague reasons such as "For an English encyclopedia with worldwide reach, million is more acceptable than lakh." and "I don't think this is an appropriate page to promote use of lakh and crore." As this is an Indian article, it is more appropriate to use 20 lakh as opposed to 2 million. Do you agree? Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive report

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive! This newsletter summarizes the March drive and other recent events.

Participation
GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

There were 99 signups for the drive; of these, 70 participated. Interest was high mainly due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page. We had a record-breaking 84 articles listed on the Requests page in March; 11 of these have been promoted to Good article status so far. Several of our recent efforts have received Featured Article status as well, and the GOCE is becoming a solid resource for the Wikipedia community. Many thanks to editors who have been helping out at the Requests page and by copy editing articles from the backlog.

Progress report

Remarkable progress was made in reducing the backlog this month, as we now have fewer than 500 articles remaining from 2009. We are well under the 4,000-article mark for the total number remaining in the queue. Since our backlog drives began in May 2010 with 8,323 articles, we have cleared more than 53% of the backlog. A complete list of results and barnstars awarded can be found here. Barnstars will be distributed over the next week. If you enjoyed participating in our event, you may also like to join the Wikification drives, which are held on alternate months to our drives. Their April drive has started.

New coodinators

Well I suppose it was inevitable, I come back and there is some problem with my Firefox/Java/Wikiscripts that are causing my browser to crash every time I try and edit anything more than a couple of lines. I have posted on Village pump tech page and will see if it is fixed in a while. It has been getting worse all day - at the moment I have no popups, my watch list is fully expanded and the "New section" is not displaying as a +, strange as it only seems to be on Wiki pages.

Thanks for doing that last award for me, didnt quite get fixed in time :¬( Luckily all is fixed now though! Woohoo! Apparently there is a problem with the resource loader version of the Navigation popups in FireFox4 that causes the other scripts to halt. It was fine on Saturday morning so I suppose they are "fiddling" with it again lol.

Hi Diannaa, I have received a message abut deeyah jpg File with the title of "File permission problem with File:Deeyah.jpg", this is true that I uploaded the file after I recieved the permission, but I don't know how to paste the information in the relevant are. So I asked an admin. named Decltype to do it for me, Decltype sent the email to the author of the file , got persmission and removed the tag which was attached to the file about deletion. An item called an "OTRS ticket" needs to be attached to the image by getting permission from the person who took the photo and it is attached to the file by an OTRS volunteer. Full intstructions are available at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Deleted image

You deleted the image my friend took of the school, "Terrace Park High School (1913)". It was taken just yesterday for the purposes of allowing people to see what this historic building looks like before it is partially demolished. So I'm confused why you deleted it. I selected, "for educational purposes only; not for commercial use" because I thought that was the most appropriate choice. I have an e-mail from my friend saying the image(s) are acceptable to use for web-sites talking about the school. Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia. In order to keep your image from being deleted, you will have to get the copyright holder to send an e-mail to the volunteer response team. Please see the instructions at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how this is done. As Wikipedia takes the question of copyright ownership quite seriously, I am sure you can understand why the proper permissions have to be in place before we can accept the image. Images uploaded to Wikipedia have to be freely reproducible so "for educational purposes only; not for commercial use" is not the way to go. It might be simpler if you live near the school to go there and take a picture yourself and then you will own the image and can select a license. Thanks for response. Taking pictures is not an option since I don't live near the school. That's why I had my friend make a special trip to take them. I think he's getting irritable that taking the pictures, uploading them and sending permission to use them, that I'm still asking for more. But I understanding Wikipedia's desire to deal with the copyrights. My impression is that an e-mail must be sent to the address I found in the materials you provided. There are about 10 pictures I would like to use, all taken at the same time. Do I need to send them all in the e-mail, in separate e-mails, or do I need to upload them first. I'm a bit confused, as it's so incredibly complicated to deal with images. I wish there was a simpler step by step process for users like me. I find wikipedia manuals very hard to decipher to do some of the simplest things...

Images is not the only area that is complicated; it's all complicated. Sorry about that. I found a step-by-step guide here, which says you are to upload first and append the {{OTRS pending}} template that shows the e-mail requesting the OTRS ticket has been sent. Note they are recommending you upload the pictures to the Commons, not here. The instructions are the same for either place. I expect you can send one e-mail for a group of images if they all have similar characteristics, since the example they attach (File:Otrs-English.png) shows multiple images on one e-mail. --Diannaa (Talk) 15:01, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Another image question

Hi there, similar issue with my image "File:Right skewed.jpg" in Long Tail. I created this image specifically for the entry (and the associated annotation was my own ) although a version of the image can probably be found in any statistics book and in a more annotated version in thousands of technical books. It is a basic statistical shape, not biased to a particular field. Does the above advice apply to me as well? --RonaldDrewman (talk) 02:23, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Your situation is slightly different if you are the person who created the image. What you have to do is tell us what the source of the image was (a statement to the effect that you created the image yourself is considered adequate) and you must select a license template. For such a simple diagram you might with to place the image in the public domain. If that is what you want to do, the correct license is {{pd-self}}. Good morning! I keep 76.117.247.55 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) on my watchlist, since some editors treat him as just another IP. I was surprised to see that he earned a block from you, so went to have a look. If the block was triggered only by his edits at Wikipedia talk:Long-term abuse, may I ask you to have another look at them? This editor has been contributing since 2005, so his opinions of long-term abusers are probably worth listening to.

There had been several attacks over the course of the evening that triggered filter #58 and filter #294 (ones that were definitely not false positives) and I thought it was him again. I have looked at it again and though this IP did also trigger filter #58 I am pretty sure it was not our LTA abuser but comments by the IP editor like you say. I will unblock him now. I looked at the article too and it just needs too much work for any of us to tackle at this time. I think the best thing the author could do at this point is go through the issues raised at the Peer Review first, and then re-submit for copy edit at a later date. I will post something on their Talk page. Thanks Phil, I never thought of declining the request but that is probably the way to go until the more structural issues are addressed. I believe I have called your attention to this before (I may be wrong), but I just thought a friendly reminder would suffice: Category talk:Wikipedia files on Wikimedia Commons#Bot to delink images illustrates how, by installing User:MGA73/nowcommonsreview.js, you can indicate to my bot to delink any images, which I will delete immediately afterwards. I run it as often as I can, usually daily. I have found it helpful beyond measure in delinking images that are on commons. I mention it as you have done recent work on Category:Wikipedia files with a different name on Wikimedia Commons, and it appears it could have come in useful for you. Sockfarmer harvesting again

Hi Diannaa, thanks for your note about the banned sockfarmer, and for helping to maintain and promote the related userbox :) It may be worth mentioning I found a very odd coincidence here but on further thought I think it really is just a coincidence. Secondly, the CCI case at Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Babasalichai is now open, and covers nearly all of the confirmed sockpuppets but not the IP addresses. Much of the various accounts' contributions will since have been reverted anyway, but this may still be helpful in removing some of the damage done by the socks in various places.
