ER

ER, it's a New Year, seems like if it was yesterday that I last spoke to you (or wrote (smile)). I think I took care if it. I can't do the same for the tables unless I eliminate the "sortable" part. What do you suggest?Tony the Marine (talk) 19:08, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:408sqn 72.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:408sqn 72.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 04:48, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Please feel free to replace this image with the appropriate "replaceable" image.— ERcheck (talk) 04:50, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Resolved

ER. you said: "The ref you have is U.S. Army. I added DoD (#73), but can't find sec 532(f). See my embedded comments in the workshop section. Can you find 532(f) or a USMC ref?" I think you meant (ref #72). Fixed. Tony the Marine (talk) 05:19, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Question

Would you say that the article in my workshop is ready for mainspace? Tony the Marine (talk) 02:26, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Yes, I have done some revisions. I'll wait for you to look it over. Tony the Marine (talk) 03:29, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
The portal looks great. I recommend Sgt. Angel Mendez, either for a future "Selected Bio" or the "DYK" section. I'm working on his MoH and already I have the Puerto Rican Senate's backing and Congressman J. Serrano. I'm waiting to hear from Congressman C. Rangel. One thing that I wanted to know about the portal. Why is it that the "top" section has links to subjects such as "Italian Wars" · "Military history of Africa" · "Military history of France", etc.? I'm just wondering. Tony the Marine (talk) 03:44, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Rudget!

Dear ERcheck, my sincere thanks for your support in my second request for adminship, which ended with 113 supports, 11 opposes, and 4 neutral. I would especially like to thank my admin coach and nominator, Rlevse and Ryan Postlethwaite who in addition to Ioeth all inspired me to run for a second candidacy. I would also like to make a special mention to Phoenix-wiki, Dihyrdogen Monoxide and OhanaUnited who all offered to do co-nominations, but I unfortunately had to decline. I had all these funny ideas that it would fail again, and I was prepared for the worst, but at least it showed that the community really does have something other places don't. Who would have though Gmail would have been so effective? 32 emails in one week! (Even if it does classify some as junk :P) I'm glad that I've been appointed after a nail biting and some might call, decision changing RFA, but if you ever need anything, just get in touch. The very best of luck for 2008 and beyond, Rudget. 15:31, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Re: Revisiting User:Melaniesharrison/sandbox

Hey ERcheck, thanks for your note. I'm not sure this sandbox effort is going anywhere, I had one note from Melanie a couple of weeks back and she's made no edits since Dec 14. I'm tempted to leave her one last notification of deletion, wait a few days, then blow the sucker away. What do you reckon? The Rambling Man (talk) 07:51, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Darin albumcover.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Darin albumcover.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 04:33, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Why delete my corrections?

hey, ERcheck, i would like to know why you deleted my "Pizza Hut" corrections about the number of employees and the customer mania headline? Please drop me a line via email, marilynspikes@msn.com.

It took me a long time to add those little 2 lines. I am new to writing on Wikipedia and i do wish to add more material, but if people such as yourself will simply delete my work, i feel discouraged from adding further information.

Please be so kind as to respond to me request?

MfD Closing as "Speedy Delete"?

You referred to this edit Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Eternal-Entropy/EternalEntropyWiki/Levels of Belief in a Statement as "Speedy Delete" which is an unusual (though probably warranted in this case) resolution for a malformed nomination. Are you planning to actually delete the malformed nom subpage? Or did you really mean "Speedy Close" (in this case I guess you can't really call it a "Speedy Keep" since it was never really nominated). If you're not going to delete the nomination page we should probably close it out on the nomination subpage with a "Speedy Close/Malformed Nomination" or something to that effect together with the mfd header and footer and move it to the log rather than just leave it out there hanging. I realize you only removed it an hour ago, I just wanted to jump on it before it gets forgotten as sometimes happens. My opinion is that we actually delete the nomination page, under G6/common sense. Thanks.--Doug.(talk contribs) 03:55, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Actually, when I saw this on MFD, it had already been speedy deleted by another admin. The addition to MFD had not been loaded properly/not really nominated -- which was a moot point when I found it, since it had already been deleted -- which negated the need to go through MFD. So, there was no decision via the MFD for speedy delete - my edit comment was to indicate why I deleted the residual "nomination". From what I could find - that nomination page had also already been deleted. Hope that makes sense. — ERcheck (talk) 02:40, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:LMurray_Homeless2Harvard.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:LMurray_Homeless2Harvard.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Project FMF (talk) 14:34, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Need Help

I was working on the album page for "All Is Well" and typed the title into the search box. It redirects to the album "The Silver Lining". If you use a lower case 'i' in the word 'is' it works correctly. I don't know where or how to fix it. Maria202 (talk) 21:01, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Thoughts? Aside from being lost? I guess I can figure out how to set up a dab page. "Is" in the album title is capitalized both on the liner notes and the CD. Will that fix the redirect? Thanks. Maria202 (talk) 22:41, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you much. I think I did it right but I'm still a bit confused with the three redirect pages. If you could double check those for me I'd appreciate it. I'll see what I can find on Michael Smith and the song. Again, thank you for helping me. Maria202 (talk) 03:08, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Sir Robin

Me again. I was updating the leadin paragraph for the Clay Aiken aritcle and checked the link for Sir Robin. This character article has been redirected back to the Spamalot article. It's the only character this was done to. See these two links 3 and 4. See also 5, the Dec. 14th revision date and the Jan. 19th revision date. Could you take a look please and see what's going on? Thanks - Maria202 (talk) 16:49, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

All I knew about the fictional characters came from reading Wikipedia a few months back so I was curious why the one article with the character description was no longer there. I don't know enough about them to get involved nor did I realize there were guidelines addressing when or when not to write about them. Appreciate your help in finding the answer to my question. Hi - you do realise you keep restoring a version of this article that says " Bonneville Radio fired him after enduring several years of his phoniness"? It's an attack page. USMC Portal updates for March 2008

I'm guessing you were being sincere, and not sarcastic, in your comment on my talk page. I just figured that since it hadn't been updated in Feb, the usual suspects weren't out and about to make the change. Otherwise, I would have discussed it a bit first. Let me know if you have any thoughts on what I selected. bahamut0013 17:10, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

I'd love to say yes, but I'm sorry to say I'm not very dependable for time-specific edits. I don't always have reliable internet connection/computer access, and when I do, my wife hogs it to mess around on Myspace. But I would love to be involved as much as possible (I figure we can post some ideas and suggestions in the portal talk a few days beforehand, and that greatly increases the chances that I will have some time to edit before the 1st of the month). What did you have in mind? We can use it for April. bahamut0013 17:35, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
So, do you have a link for this coordination page?
Also, I don't really know what I could do with the good Lieutenant's article. I just don't know what makes him significant outside of his role at Tripoli. bahamut0013 20:16, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

I noticed that you removed the speedy tag from this article, whilst like you (I assume) I don't think it fits with any of the speedy delete criteria I don't think any of the content is salvagable as an article and I don't see the advantage of having it in mainspace for another two days. With this in mind I started a thread here. Regards, Guest9999 (talk) 19:35, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

USMC Portal updates for April 2008

Taking a look at some of the suggested content, I looked at Carlson's patrol and was blown away--it's a great article. I definately favor featuring that one. I also realize that if we want to get some variety from our featured image, we should pick an older image, and the Image:DeadJapaneseGuadalcanal.jpg struck me as the better of the older ones. Following the Guadalcanal-ish "theme" going in my recommendations, I'd pick Robert E. Galer for the featured biography and the James Jones quote for the featured quote.

Thoughts? bahamut0013 15:32, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Jones' quote, while related to Guadalcanal, isn't specifically related to the Marine Corps. Marine Corps related-quotes naturally are given preference. On images, if there are others that you want to be considered, just post them in the image gallery. I've been considering the Guadalcanal image you indicated. — ERcheck (talk) 01:14, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:LogoADA.gif

Thank you for uploading Image:LogoADA.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 13:39, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Rationale provided for logo uploaded in 2005, prior to current requirements for details of fair use. — ERcheck (talk) 23:50, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Question about an image you deleted

Hi, I saw that you deleted Image:Barack-obama-somali-elder-clothing.jpg based on CSD G4. However, unless I'm mistaken, the reason why it was previously deleted was because the licensing/Fair Use info was missing or incorrect. I fixed that info (see my note here), but you deleted it soon afterward. Is there some other reason why it was deleted again? If not, could you restore it? Cheers! -- Hux (talk) 00:56, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Was going to inquire about this myself, but I see Hux beat me to it. The deletion reason you gave, G4, doesn't apply to what was originally a speedly delete[6]. I understand Hux fixed G12, and there is an ongoing discussion about including the image [7], so... maybe you were premature? Andyvphil (talk) 13:27, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Based on a MFD posted on 27 Feb 2008, it was deleted. While it was eventually "speedied" as a copyright violation, that happened after a few days on MFD. So, my deletion was not based on recreation of a speedy deleted, but rather an MFD. — ERcheck (talk) 23:35, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
Right, I see that. However, the criteria on which the MFD was decided (I5 + G12) clearly no longer apply. I5 is not relevant because there is an article ready and waiting for its inclusion and G12 isn't relevant because a Fair Use rationale was given for its inclusion on that specific article in relation to a description specifically about that photo. So in other words, the conclusion of the MFD was faulty. -- Hux (talk) 08:38, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
The closing admin noted both G12 and I5. His emphasis was on G12. Suppying fair use rationale does not automatically overcome copyright claims. At the time of my re-deletion there was no clear consensus that fair use was appropriate — in fact, you had it as a question. — ERcheck (talk) 11:05, 11 March 2008 (UTC) Ongoing discussion on the article's talk page also shows no consensus. — ERcheck (talk) 11:45, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
I see where you're coming from. However, it's important to note that the Fair Use rationale that was present at the time you deleted the image was not there when the G12 issue was being discussed, which is why the MFD faulted it on the basis of G12. So deleting it on the basis of that MFD, without recognizing the changes that were made, would be an unsafe deletion in my view, especially considering that editors were working to bring it into line with the image policy.
If it can be shown that the image satisfies WP:NFCC, would you consider restoring it? If that isn't sufficient, could you give me an idea of what would be considered sufficient? Cheers. -- Hux (talk) 23:11, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
There does not seem to be consensus on this image. If there is clear consensus, in line with Wikipedia policy, let me know and I will take a look again. — ERcheck (talk) 11:50, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
I've never been involved in an image deletion before, but now that I've looked it seems clear that both your deletion and that done by ChrisO were out of policy.
First, ChrisO's: He said it was a "speedy deletion" and supplied two CSD, but it could not be a correct "speedy" because there were objections. (WP:IFD says "Images that have been listed here for more than 5 days are eligible for deletion if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion have been raised.") Instead it went to MFD where, contrary to the instructions for closure he closed it after only two, not five, days. Instead of summarizing the discussion and determining rough consensus he closed it based on two CSD (a category error), one barely discussed (the copyvio allegation) and the other completely inappropriate (there was an ongoing discussion as to whether to include the image; the "not used" test is clearly not intended to allow obstructive deletions of contested material without the waiting period). The MFD was, therefor, as Hux says, "faulty". It appears that instead of performing the duty of a closing admin ChrisO misused his powers to enforce his opinion, and nobody involved on the other side was knowledgeable enough to challenge him.
However, even if it were not faulty, your closure was not in accord with the reason you gave, CSD G4. It apples to "A copy, by any title, of a page deleted via a deletion discussion, provided the copy is substantially identical to the deleted version[no argument] and that any changes in the recreated page do not address the reasons for which the material was deleted.[the new fair use rationale on the deleted page does address G12; Boolian logic: true AND false = false]
Since your deletion was in error, I ask that you simply reverse it. Your opinion as to whether consensus exists on the talk page is not relevant to you obligation to do so, but should you volunteer to offer it (and I would welcome your doing so) I ask that you do what WP:CON calls forn namelty that "...finding the actual consensus (or what it will end up as [requires] carefully consider[ing] the strength and quality of the arguments themselves (including any additional concerns that may have been raised along the way), the basis of objection of those who disagree, and in more complex situations, existing documentation in the project namespace... If you are volunteering to carry out an action on the basis of rough consensus, only this thorough approach is acceptable." Andyvphil (talk) 23:26, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

In the future, could you please sort Hawaii-related deletion discussions using the instructions found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Hawaii. Regardless of the content of this article, which I admit not having seen or having access to, the concept is a culturally-significant aspect of Hawaiiana and would qualify for any number of redirects in lieu of content. That the article was summarily deleted without any input from the Hawaii project is indicative of core problems related to the deletion process which are upheld by a group of people who are motivated by the idea of deletion rather than that of an informed opinion. —Viriditas | Talk 15:08, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your thoughts. I am not a member of WikiProject Deletion sorting. I do not find from the deletion discussion that the editors who contributed appeared to be "motivated by the idea of deletion rather than that of an informed opinion." (Please AGF on the part of all involved in the discussion.) The deletion discussion speaks for itself — the article was entirely unreferenced. As you feel that it is an important aspect of related to Hawaiian culture, you seem to be in a position to write an article on the topic based on reliable sources. I'd be interested in reading it. — ERcheck (talk) 23:23, 5 April 2008 (UTC) Addendum: If you think the AFD discussion was flawed, you are free to take it to WP:Deletion review. — ERcheck (talk) 23:25, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
I have assumed good faith, and after participating in AfD and reviewing the deletion discussions for some time, I find the entire deletion process to be unproductive and mismanaged. As for Aloha Friday, I have the sources in front of me and I will be adding a new section to Aloha shirt. It took me approximately one minute to find reliable sources. Even Google Books shows that the topic is covered in Gale's Multicultural Encyclopaedia. That this article was deleted without so much as a redirect demonstrates my point about AfD. It is a complete failure. I am surprised that you think you have to be a member of deletion sorting to have the common courtesy to sort your nomination appropriately so that others may participate. One does not have to be a member of any project to help facilitate discussion. I also question whether the original nomination was made correctly, as I see it was fixed a few hours before the discussion was closed. I'm not sure why you would think I would want a flawed process to be reviewed by an equally broken process of DR, but I want to thank you for brightening up my day with a good laugh. —Viriditas | Talk 23:36, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
I don't appreciate the accusatory nature of your comments — saying that I lack common courtesy. In fact, the article was tagged for speedy deletion, and rather than summarily deleting it, I thought it better to get community input. I did not "vote" for deletion — but let the community give their intput. I did not close the discussion. Again, I suggest you take it to DR if you would like the process reviewed. But, it seems the better solution is for you to write the referenced article that you have information to create. — ERcheck (talk) 23:39, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
What have I accused you of? I have condemned the entire process, not any single individual. If you are reading yourself into my comments, there is nothing I can do about that. And, why would I want to take this to DR when I just finished telling you that I wouldn't? Same goes for the article. I just told you that I'm adding it as a section, not as a new article. Are you reading what I'm saying or are you only reading what you want to read? —Viriditas | Talk 23:43, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Reviewing the AFD - I did list it under society topics. The article that was nominated did not mention Hawaii — rather referred to it as a colloquialism in the Pacific Northwest, especially Seattle and Portland. It was not mentioned that this was terminology used in Hawaii. With the context of the article that was nominated, listing it under society topics seemed appropriate. — ERcheck (talk) 23:58, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

I just happened to come across this. All I can say is I've never known ERcheck to lack common courtesy. I suggest all take a 1-2 day break from this and then revisit if needed. RlevseTalk 21:45, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

I have been upset about AfD for some time, and I believe I may have blown some steam off in ERcheck's direction when I saw that he nominated Aloha friday for deletion and it was in fact deleted. For that, I must apologize to ERcheck and hope he accepts. I still think that when a situation like this occurs, an article should be improved, not deleted. There are RS regarding Aloha friday and its relationship to the Aloha shirt. I am concerned that AfD is used to delete valid subjects as an excuse for not having to do the actual work to improve them. When I participated in AfD, I would make every effort to improve an article, and in many cases, I have spent money out of my own pocket to purchase archival articles from news archives in order to prevent them from being deleted. I have done this not out of any great interest in the material, but for the sole purpose of preserving information. Aloha friday should have been, at the very least, redirected to Aloha shirt and expanded. That nobody was willing to rise to the occasion is troublesome. I feel that bureaucracy and process have become more important than research and content. —Viriditas | Talk 08:30, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Thank you. Apology accepted. BTW, did you consider redirecting "Aloha Friday" to Casual Friday? — ERcheck (talk) 02:39, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for accepting my apology. Yes, I have considered redirecting aloha friday to casual friday, however the topic actually has more to do with the aloha shirt. You can view my preliminary content here. I promise to help fix casual friday as well. :) Viriditas (talk) 07:24, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

RE:Featured list closure

Hi there, I read your note at Gimme's talkpage. Just to let you know that the bot does not promote or fail nominations, it merely archives them. See WP:FAC/ar for more details. In a nutshell it was failed by User:Scorpion0422 with this edit and this edit. Regards. Woody (talk) 22:48, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Woody, Thanks so much for the info. I was surprised to see a closure without a clear indication of why, while there seemed to be only a few items remaining to address. — ERcheck (talk) 23:05, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

The reason it was failed is because of an ongoing discussion about incomplete lists. While the list did either contain or have links to lists that contained every winner, I decided to close it because of The Rambling Man's concerns that it was not the best idea to promote such lists until a resolution to the issue was found. Also, the discussion had been going on for a month and I checked with the nominating user before closing it. -- Scorpion0422 01:28, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of Anna Poletti page

Oh. You didn't give me the chance to put a "hang on" tag on the page. Maybe I should have done more research into what makes it clear that a person is "notable" in Wikipedia terms. Dr.Anna Poletti is one of Australia's leading experts on zines and D.I.Y. publishing, as evidenced by the fact that Australia's most significant and eminent academic publishing house is about to publish her book on the topic. She is also one of the founders of Australia's National Young Writers' Festival and the yearly Critical Animals conference. Articles have been written in several national newspapers where she has provided expert comment. She has been extensively interviewed on the Australian Broadcasting Commission's Book Programme. I could provide links for these. Do you think this would be sufficient to establish the subject's notability? Thanks. Johannes.klabbers (talk) 23:13, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Article needing your touch

Hope all is well. Take a look at Merlin German. He passed away last week.--Looper5920 (talk) 16:29, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Things are good on this end. i am not really in a position to make any big contributions at the moment. Maybe later in the summer assuming everything goes well. Came across another one that could use just a few touch ups and might look good on the portal eventually.....Lucy Brewer. Take it easy.--03:37, 6 May 2008 (UTC)~

I need a bit of administrator help

There is an anonymous user (User:132.79.13.15), whom you have previously blocked for vandalism, that has vandalized my userpage a few times, seemingly in response for my reverting his/her vandalism of Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. Checking the IP, it seems to be a US Army domain (possibly Fort Belvoir), and some of the other contributions are mostly related to the Army. I've added another vandalism warning template on the talk page, but I doubt it will do any good. Do you think you could do something administrator-ly to discourage this vandalism, or at least keep it on your radar? I would appreciate the help. bahamut0013 01:30, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, it seems that User:Rlevse threw a 24-hour block on him real fast. Still, I wonder how effective that will be. bahamut0013 01:41, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
He's at it again. bahamut0013 11:54, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Much appreciated. Some people just don't have that much sense. bahamut0013 12:13, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Sigh. another vandal is set upon me. I'm pretty sure this is a jarhead. It's a shame. bahamut0013 11:50, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

I really appreciate your help with these harassing IPs, especially since you are supposed to be on a wikibreak. ;) Hope all is oing well with you. bahamut0013 03:35, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Apologies

here. I didn't realise the creator had undone my speedy and then you re-tagged. I think the history loaded oddly for me because when I undid my own speedy yours didn't show. Sorry 'bout that. TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 04:30, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

I think what happened was the first tagger wiped the whole article and put cfd which was what led me to tagging G1 -- thiking it was a re-creation of a deleted post complete with speedy. Then when I refreshed and saw it had content, I de-tagged as G1 not realising ou'd re-tagged as G3. If nothing else, it will be an amusing AfD along the lines of other recent ones of monkeys and superheroes but obviously feel free to Speedy it if you think it's G3-able. Hi. Yes, there are definetly two different films. The 1937 one stars Bing Crosby, while the 1936 one is a short film nominated for an Oscar. On a second check, it looks like the NY Times page seems to have merged the two films together! I'll reference the Oscar nom on the '36 film from elsewhere. Thanks! Question

So, explain this to me, I spend an hour figuring out how start a Football Player bio and it gets tagged for speedy deletion because there is only one person and one source of info for a young up and coming player. Before I can figure out how to add more content, it's gone. Nice touch!!! Coppercanuck (talk) 03:06, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Block of 202.79.62.21

Hey, I saw you blocked for three hours. The IP had received a one month block in March for a similar offense. Enigma message 06:17, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't have much hope in this case, because previous blocks had very little effect. However, I do see your point, as I did bring up at AIV the fact that a user using that IP commented several times about it being shared. I will keep a close eye on the IP, and if it persists, maybe I'll come to you again. ;) Enigma message 06:25, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Quick help

Hey, hope all is well. I was hoping you might help me with something real quick if you get the chance. You know I stink at the administrative stuff here so I was hoping for an assisst. I came across this article (Distribution Liaison Company) and she needs to be deleted or at leat merged into 4th Supply Battalion. Not good practice for companies to be getting their own pages. Thanks in advance, again hope everything is going good. Cheers--Looper5920 (talk) 23:43, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I know you are on break but I came across one more that could use an assist. Joseph R. Chenelly...seems this guy is a Public Affairs/Combat Correspondent in the Marines who decided to write an article on himself. It should really be deleted as it is blatant self-promotion. If you could help it would be appreciated. Thanks--Looper5920 (talk) 17:58, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
I don't mean to butt in, but I wrote the article on Joseph R> Chenelly. I am not Joe, and I am not an employee or relative of his. I do know him though, and he is a great story. If it turns out he isn't notable enough, then I guess you'll delete the article, but I think he is and would like the chance to tell the story in the correct way. Thank you, Pete Kendall. —Preceding unsigned comment added by KendallCC (talkcontribs) 20:41, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
Take a look at this. User has only edited Joseph R. Chenelly or pages liked to/from said bio, consistantly tags image captions with this Marine's name, and worst of all, I have my doubts about notability (I can't bring myself to nominate it at AfD because of all the work he's put into the article). I don't really have the diplomatic skills to tell him it looks kinda funny (and maybe even suspicious) without biting him. bahamut0013 19:09, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Found a similar situation: Repairables Management Division; a platoon-sized unit, a sub-unit of a company sized unit in a MALS. I couldn't agree that such a unit is inherantly notable, especially given the limited scope. It also has been primarily edited by T8765 (talk · contribs), who has worked only on that article and linked it form one other. I can't think of a good place to merge it into, and I'm concerned about Marines opening single-purpose accounts to write about some old insignificant thing they did/wortked in/whatever when they were in the Corps. What do you think we should do with this article/user? bahamut0013 14:59, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

(I usually go to BrownHairedGirl for these, but she's on summer vacation just now.) Choess (talk) 01:51, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. Naming pattern is also consistent with other SSPs of Burkem. I've reverted the contributions to legitimate articles (and beefed up the citations for Herluin de Conteville establishing that he was of obscure ancestry) and proposed the others for deletion. Choess (talk) 02:22, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the improvements to the PIRAZ article. I noticed reviewing your work that you wrote the William L. Nyland article. Bill and I were NROTC classmates at the University of New Mexico when future Camp Pendleton commanding general Robert Haebel was the Marine Corps instructor at that unit. I particularly remember Bill spit-shining a pair of rough-out high-top boots during our 2/c midshipman cruise while the rest of us maintained indifferent attention to the finish of our low-cut boondockers. I wondered if you and I may have met? I think I have a photo of Bill as a midshipman if that would be appropriate for the article. Thewellman (talk) 05:47, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Robert E. Haebel, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://3mafband.lapoint.net/gallery/names/haebel. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 08:17, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

The text is question is in the public domain as a work of the United States Marine Corps - part of the U.S. military. This public domain information is clearly included in the reference section of the article. The Bot needs to note these things. In addition, on the page (at the bottom of the page) noted by the Bot, the source is clearly www.usmc.mil (United States Marine Corps website.) Thanks. — ERcheck (talk) 12:46, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi ER, hope you had a good break/time off/vacation. I need your help with this image which I uploaded here in Wikipedia first, then 4 days later I did the same in Commons so others could use it too. I thought they were independent from each other. Now there is a sign saying that the image is a exact duplicate from Commons and will be deleted unless an administrator protect it. Can you do that for me? What do you recommend I should do in the future?. Thanks.--Cefaro (talk) 00:08, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

USMC portal update for Sept 2008

Hey, I just wanted to let you know: I'm not going to have computer access (after today) until the 3rd or so... If you can, you'll have to do the USMC portal update for September. If I come in and it's still on the current features, then I'll go ahead and change it (late is better than never, and we'll never get featured portal if it's consistantly stagnant). As it stands right now, I've kind of planning on a bit of a "theme" for the update.... Iwo Jima. All of my choices are on Portal:United States Marine Corps/Coordination, at the top of each respective list.

Hey, I had a thought aout the portal: perhaps we are utilizing biographies as featured articles a bit too often? Perhaps I'm counting wrong, but we are using them more often than non-bio articles. I understand that because we don't have very many B-class or better articles to choose from (due to your dilligence, the biographies tend to be in good shape), but it does seem unbalanced when you consider that we have a seperate featured bio... perhaps we could do a collaboration on a article or two and get them up to GA status. What do you think? bahamut0013 11:21, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Biographies on USMC Portal: In 2008 (to-date) 3/7; 2007 - 3/11; 2006 (began in March) - 1/13. Thre have been more this year than in the previous years. I would like to occasionally see biographies asthe Article selection. 2007 is a more typical year - where there were ~25%. My goal/plan was to try to have a balance of different types of topics and from various times in USMC history. I don't find too many bases have articles that are sufficiently strong — though I think it would be nice to feature major bases such as Camp Pendleton, Camp Butler, and Camp Lejeune. Iconic battles such as Belleau Wood and Iwo Jima, etc. I'd like to have iconic USMC topics featured during Novembers. (To Bahamut0013's talk page.) — ERcheck (talk) 00:22, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
I agree on your suggestion of Belleau Wood. We should put them up quickly! Its already the 3rd! bahamut0013 01:49, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
1/1 sounds like a good, solid choice. I'm partial to the Okinawa photo, but I agree, a color picture would be better. I'll defer to you on the biography idea. The only quote listed sounds good. I think for a DYK, we could mention that officers carried the NCO sword briefly during the Civil War, then returned to the Mameluke after. You've already done the image. bahamut0013 13:45, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Hm. Well, October is also fire safety month. Perhaps we should feature an article about artillery :P I think your suggestion is very appropriate, and it does sound better than 1/1. Ought to make Tony feel warm and fuzzy as well. bahamut0013 17:26, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Have you considered being a coordinator? I'd like to nominate you, but I thought I'd ask you first. I think you'd do a pretty good job at it, you certainly have the people skills. bahamut0013 11:39, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Info on Marines

I have been working closely behind the scenes with family members and Congress on both cases. The only thing that I know is that the Department of Defense approved Peralta's nomination of the MOH and that the only thing that is keeping his MOH award is the signature of Pres. Bush (It is on his desk). In regard to Mendez, the Department of the Navy still has his MOH nomination on hold. I was informed about this by the office of Congressman J. Serrano who joined my quest after I got in touch with him. Tony the Marine (talk) 05:28, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Buddy

I think that the portal is great and that it was wonderful to see Angel Mendez featured. Your contributions and fixes are always welcomed, thank you for what you did in the Puerto Rican Campaign, nice article isn't it? I was aborbed the last couple of days researching the case: Gonzalez v Williams, which delt with a young Puerto Rican women whose contributions are unknown because she has fallen into the cracks of history. I think that I did her justice with this article Isabel Gonzalez. Tony the Marine (talk) 07:28, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

  • So, tell me honestly, what do you think of the PR Campaign article? Tony the Marine (talk) 02:31, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Quick help

Hey just a random drive-by asking for some help. Need help getting a page deleted. Hoover's Hunters does not belong and you are much more diplomatic with these things. I believe it is a speedy but I could be wrong. Thanks and hope all is well.--Looper5920 (talk) 16:34, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Updated DYK query On 5 September, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article William A. Eddy, which you recently nominated. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Thanks for nominating. Hassocks5489 (tickets please!) 16:54, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

The article is on "hold" for GA. There are some referencing concerns on the talk page and I wondering if you could do me a favor and look into them, because when it comes to referencing formats, I am a total idiot. Thanks. Tony the Marine (talk) 04:53, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Thank you buddy, I know that I can always count on you. Let's see what happens now. Tony the Marine (talk) 00:08, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Question

When you look at the article, do you see any text that is sandwiched between the images? I couldn't see it nor could user CaribbeanHQ and we were wondering if the problem was the resolution of the reviewers computer. Tony the Marine (talk) 03:21, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Perfect, I agree. I eliminated that part because it really dosen't add to the understanding of the subject. Now, tell me if there is any "sandwiching" left? Tony the Marine (talk) 19:30, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Admin help: POV edits to USMC article

I'm sure you noticed that an editor has been constantly changing the wording of the United States Marine Corps article, specifically the subsection of addressing veterans, to be more POV toward those who have had a dishonorable discharge. Specifically, Wrestleforpizza & 71.123.16.83 have made identical changes (example: [10] & [11]). Wrestleforpizza has been warned once for this (User_talk:Wrestleforpizza), and the anonymous IP has been warned 3 times and blocked (User talk:71.123.16.83)... if you look at the history, you'll see that once the IP was blocked (03:49, 7 September), the person logged in and continued the same edits (16:59, 7 September 2008). I think it's safe to say that not only did the editor not get the hint, but that he has a single purpose account as well, and I would speculate that this individual has recieved a dishonorable discharge as well. I've also left this message at User talk:MBK004 (he was the blocking admin). bahamut0013 15:59, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Hoovers Hunters

Deletion of hoovers hunters was too quick for any dispute to take place. The Battalion was number near the top of VC must capture list and Mr Hoover like Carlos Hathcock was one of the men on the VC most wanted dead or alive list. This article needs more recognition and is historically important. I would contribute more to it, If I had more free time to do so. I wish the article to be resumed soon or further disputed and not immediately deleted upon the opinion of one person. Many who served in Vietnam knew of Hoover's Hunters and were highly prized by the top brass in Washington. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Root Beers (talkcontribs) 13:21, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Peralta

It truly is a shame that he wasn't awarded the MoH. It was approved and Pres. Bush had the papers of approval in his office. What happened? I can only speculate, however I read that the current administration is doing everything in their power to not award anything higher then the Bronze Star because according to "them," we are not involved in a "war," we are involved in a police operation and if the administration starts to award medals of valor, that would be an admission that we are indeed involved in a "war." You go figure it out.

I'll try to work on the article soon, my friend, my health isn't what it used to be, I can hardly walk and tomorrow I'm going to the hospital to find out what's going on. Tony the Marine (talk) 02:23, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Requesting your opinion

My fellow comrades, I'm requesting your participation (opinion or suggestion) as an uninvolved party in the following consensus: Gen. Raymond T. Odierno in an effort to terminate an edit-war between the two parties involved . The issue involved has to do with the inclusion in Odierno's biogragpy his participation in the so-called "Surge" or to simply "link" said Surge to an article about said subject. Thank you. Tony the Marine (talk) 22:24, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Thank you all for your valued participation and suggestions on the Gen. Raymond T. Odierno biography. The edit "protection" of the aticle will be lifted soon. Consensus suggest that additional info should be included for his early life and career. Career history should go after the "Early life and education" section. It is recognized that the general's involvement in the planning and undertaking of the surge is notable and should be included in the article, however it should be limited in scope to what was verifiably done by the general and should not weigh too heavily on that particular subject in order to to have a more balanced biography. Final comments welcomed. Tony the Marine (talk) 22:53, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm back

Well my friend, I'm back from the cruise. The ship stopped in Catalina Island and in Ensenada Mexico. The last time I was in Mexico was in 1969, when I was sent to Camp Pendelton and I visited Tijuana. The thing about Ensenada that I had to see was La Bufadora and the Convention center which once was a casino owned by Al Capone. Semper Fi, Tony the Marine (talk) 06:22, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

Tony Santiago

I think that the internet link is no longer posted, but the article came out on September 7, 2006, in "Claridad" a Puerto Rican monthy.

Title: "Projecto Wikipedia: realzando la presencia Boricua en sus pajinas" (Wikipedia project: The Puerto Rican (Boricua) presence in it's pages); Especial Para En Rojo (A Special in Red; by: David E. Miro Feliciano.

Mr. Feliciano has a user page here: User: Demf. It is in Spanish and reads like this:

"I (Feliciano) am not the "Boricua" (Puerto Rican) who has made the most contributions to Wikipedia, that honor belongs to Anthony Santiago, better known as "Tony the Marine", a Puerto Rican born in the Bronx, former member of the Armed Forces of the United States and Vietnam Veteran, believer in Puerto Rico's independence and who serves as an administrador in Wikipedia in English who resides in Arizona. Tony "The Marine" tends to locate new registered users in Wikipedia who are Puerto Ricans and help them guide as their mentor."

I hope that this helps, Tony the Marine (talk) 20:22, 12 October 2008 (UTC)

RE: Nov portal updates

I agree with you on Battle of Belleau Wood, it's a very solid B-class that really ought to be rated higher than that.

For the biographies, I'm split. I'm reluctant to feature Gen Barrow so soon after his death; featuring a concurrently developing article seems like a bad idea to me because there exists the possibility that some changes may need to be made, depending on how things develop, besides, it's not as well developed as the others. I was leaning toward Cukela, but then I saw your point about perhaps featuring a lesser-known name, plus, the other two candidates actually were at Belleau Wood, and you know I love to connect the farious features. Cole's article is not in any shape to be featured in its current condition. Gen Shepard seems the best choice to me, and he gets my vote, unless you can improve Cole's article to B-class in a few days. (sheesh, this ain't American Idol) bahamut0013 14:06, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I think Schoonover's painting still has the copyright in effect. He died in 1972, and thus we are still before the 50-year expiration. I think we could claim that images created before 1923 are in the public domain, but I connot verify when he actually painted it, he may have very well painted it after 1923. For convenience, I'll simply use Image:Scott Belleau Wood.jpg until we can sort this out further. bahamut0013 12:40, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
The article is updated, and I have left a message at the Historical Division about Schoonover's painting. Hopefully, they will call back with good news. Our Ball is tommorrow night, and I've made an arrangement with one of the Combat Camera Marines to get some photography first thing on Friday morning (because we are supposed to get Thursday off to recover). I'm hoping to get the general cutting the cake, but I'll settle for the oldest Marine passing a slice to the youngest Marine. bahamut0013 13:15, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
I've made a template to help noting a page was featured on it's talk page. Please see Template:USMCportal and offer citiques. bahamut0013 15:49, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, forgot to mention earlier: the HD was a bust. Not only did the lady have no clue what I was asking her for, but she seemed pretty irate at the idea I, a lowly corporal, was asking her for resources. I don't forsee any useful imagery coming out of them that isn't already on thier website, at least, not by my request. As to your suggestions to the template, I have incorporated them. As you can tell by the documentation, I origionally had them as "selected", I must have made the switch by accident when adding the links. (note: if you view the template again soon, you will need to purge your cache to see the update) bahamut0013 02:25, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
I did uncenter it, and removed the break. After some sandbox tests, however, I determined that the break was better; long or short aticle titles cause the wrapping to look ugly. I did a bit more digging about Schoonover's painting, and I got the same results as you: colloquial or deductive evidence only... But that's OK, I like the other image better! :P bahamut0013 12:37, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

My friend at Combat Camera wound up getting called away from the office yesterday, and never got me any photos yet. Since there is a long break for the holiday, I won't be able to get anything from her until Thursday, minimum. 'Tis unfortunate... I tried to find a few free images, and the only halfway decent one I found is here. I know my wife took a few photos that night and uploaded them to her Photobucket account, but she's... not the best photographer. When she wakes and gives me her password, I'll post you some links. bahamut0013 12:22, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Take a look at United States Marine Corps birthday ball! bahamut0013 15:22, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Looks like a good start. I think we should get an image up quickly, however. the 9th is almost here (15 minutes as I write this), and we certainly must have a birthday image up by the 10th!
As far as the pagent goes, I'd always kinda assumed it was part of the ball celebration, if it was included at all. This year was the first year that I hadn't seen it at the ball itself (here in Cherry Point), and it seems 29 Palms did the same this year as well. It certainly merits some inclusion in the new article, and I will add a blurb (all of the references do mention it). bahamut0013 04:47, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Richard Milhous Nixon

As a recently involved editor to the Richard Milhous Nixon article I would like to inform you that I nominated the article for WP:GA. Lets cross our fingers and hope for the best. Sadly, a recent dispute on the Talk:Barack Obama page has spilled over to other articles on the presidents. The Nixon article has gone through a few changes, but I reverted the changes with the argument that any consensus reached on the Obama talk page is not binding on other pages. An editor has asked for a discussion. If you would like to join in, please do so at Talk:Richard Nixon.--Jojhutton (talk) 02:33, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm not an expert here. I suggest you check with some Marines who where in Charlie Company in those years. Try this website — Charlie Company 1st Battalion 7th Marines. There is a photo album page — here — that you can use to compare then to now (see 1967 (see "Party Time" photo) . There is also contact information in the Site Index on the left of the home page. Hope this helps. — ERcheck (talk) 00:08, 17 November 2008 (UTC) (responded on talk page as well)

Chinese immigration to Puerto Rico

Thanks buddy, for your help. After I wrote the Jewish immigration to Puerto Rico article, I looked into the Chinese immigration to Puerto Rico and what I found was a poorly writen article without any sources and any truth to it. Busy bee!

You sure do get things done.

Have you seen Looper about lately? He hasn't been on Wikipedia very often in the last month or so, and when he has, it's been very brief. He mentiond he was moving more than a month ago.

I also wanted to let you know that I'll be deploying again to Iraq soon after the new year. The majority of updates will be dependant on you, though I will contribute as able while forward. I doubt very much I'll once leave Al Asad Airbase. Cheers. bahamut0013 12:20, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

I've only been able to glance at it, but it seems to be a good idea: we pre-load upcoming features and the portal will automatically display them when the month changes. It certainly is an improvement. Hopefully, I can pre-load a few month's worth of features in this week; of course, I will have to trust in you to keep it going. I'm sure I'll have plenty of internet access, I just don't know how much at any given time I will be able to devote to the project. I'm gonna have to trim my watchlist down a great deal or it will drive me nuts and waste all of my time.
Your idea: certainly can't hurt, as long as we maintain flexibility and don't get married to any one thing. It would be a great idea if any newcomers want to help contribute to the portal. It also would be a great way for me to help contribute when my interent access is sporadic, as you won't be able to count on me to get something done by a certain date. bahamut0013 21:32, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

I left you a short note about citations on the talk page for the Felt article. I'm out of my depth. No need to reply, just giving you a heads-up because of your remark there which seems to be related to the same problem. — LisaSmall T/C 02:34, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Butler and Freinds

Sorry I don't know much more about that picture than what I put out there. I got it from Gray Research center on Quantico and it was a government photo so its freely distributable but thats about all I know. You might try sending it to the Mairine Corps museum website or the Mairine Corps historical society they might know. --Kumioko (talk) 14:52, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Upcoming portal updates

I'm starting to pre-load some of the 2009 portal updates. One thing about Feb: we both wanted to to an Iwo Jima theme, and I'd like to use Holland Smith as the article, but it's start class. Since you are the biography expert, I thought I'd point you in that direction (let me know if you think you can't get at it soon, I'll pick someone else, probably a MOH winner). bahamut0013 21:55, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

I dunno. I've never heard of him, though that isn't saying much. I don't see a huge USMC connection with him by looking at his article... I wouldn't use him as the featured bio, but that quote would work great for February: "the end of a fortnight's bloody fighting there is no longer any doubt that Iwo is the most difficult amphibious operation in U.S. history." As far as images go, I've had to change January's twice now... sheesh. bahamut0013 00:38, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Ah, that makes more sense. I didn't get that level of import from the article... I dunno how you would convey that sense of import off the top of my head. Your logic makes sense, and I suppose you were entirely correct. As always, I trust in your judgement. bahamut0013 00:51, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
If I might make a suggestion: in March, I'm featuring Uniforms of the United States Marine Corps and the image is a great one of the new PT uniform. Following that "uniform" theme, it'd be great if you could pic a bio of a Marine sporting a historic uniform. For example: Henry L. Hulbert. bahamut0013 02:01, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I have another suggestion: Douglas A. Zembiec is a great article, and its got lots of references. The "Lion of Fallujah" has gained some great fame amongst the circles I associate with, and I'd love to see him get some recognition soon. bahamut0013 17:18, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Portal

The portal looks great as always. The thing that really caught my attention was the K-9 with the Purple Heart. You know last year someone told me that it wasn't far that military K-9's were not recognized and awarded military decorations for heroism. I just finished revamping my Irish immigration to Puerto Rico, the rewriet makes it practically brand new. You know, someone sent me an e-mail about a Captain in the Army who is blind. I'm going to check it out this week. Tony the Marine (talk) 00:47, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Barack Obama

This is not vandalism. I know for a fact, based on many reliable media sources and United States records, that Barack Obama has not yet confirmed with the government that he is American born and able to legally take office as the president. His birthplace should be removed from the article to avoid controversy. It should temporarily be prohibited to add this information. As a matter of fact, this article should be temporarily disabled from viewing until its content can be verified. It is impossible to verify anything at this time, as the media is putting its bias into the American's mind. I did not intend to vandalize this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JRH95 (talkcontribs) 20:06, 3 December 2008

  • JRH95, where did you get your information from? Every elementry child in the United States knows that you can not run and much less be nominated for president of the United States unless you are born in there. That is a fact. Tony the Marine (talk) 05:17, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
    • In case you hadn't noticed, that guy nominated himself for admin upon his 4th edit here. He was also slapped down for trying to change the Obama article to claim there's a controversy about his birth certificate; which there isn't, except in the minds of a few conspiracy theorists. Thanks

Thanks for the "fun fact" and the ref. majic in my workshop. That Capt. Castro is something else isn't he? I got in touch with Brig. Gen. Hector E. Pagan Deputy commander of the Special Forces (He is the one who presented me with the excellence medal in Puerto Rico) and he has arranged my contact with Castro. I'll do it after I organize my research. Tony the Marine (talk) 05:17, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Re-enlistment image

That is an awesome image! I remember doing mine on top of an obstacle course, and I've attended one where a MGySgt from Motor T did his on top of a wrecker. It would be a great image for the portal, but the queue is filled up until March of 2010. If you end up uploading it, let me know and I'll caption it with the Oath of enlistment. bahamut0013 15:58, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
P.S. take a look at this... third page letter to the editor. He took my whole email signature... :P

Rearranging abit would be fine, but I've tried to take into account what article and image are being featured each month, and make them relate or at least complement. I'm going to have to insist that Portal:United States Marine Corps/picture/2009September stay on that month (and I'm sure you'll probably agree why), and I wanted the M777 to be featured in May because it was first fielded May 2005, but the rest is open to your meddling, my friend. bahamut0013 12:15, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

Urgent

There is a lot of crap going on in regard to Castor's notability in the Talk:Ivan Castro (soldier) apge. Plus, the marathon section has been decimated. I don't want the anger part of me to get the better part of me and I thought that you would like to look into this and comment. I can not get in touch with Castro as long as this foolisness goes on. Tony the Marine (talk) 18:27, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

I want to share with you that my DYK hook for Ivan Castro (soldier) drew 71,300 page views while it was featured on the Main Page. That's an all-time DYK record for most page views! The list of all-time top DYK page views can be seen here, and your Castro article is now #1: Wikipedia:DYKBEST#All-time best of DYK. I do not seek any congratulations because the disrespect towards the article and the decimation of the marathon section have discouraged me from ever nominating any of the articles that I create for "DYK" ever again. I want to thank you because you were an asset to the article with your copyediting. Tony the Marine (talk) 06:02, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Another suggestion

I heppened upon William Gainey and thought the wording of the text was a little strange; seems almost as if his bio was copied and pasted from an Army website. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on cleaning it up, or perchance would like to help. On a side note, I was wondering if you've heard anything about nominating another Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman anytime soon? bahamut0013 20:28, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

coordination project

I'm planning to take on a project for the rest of the month, and I was wondering if you'd like to join me. I'm planning on replacing the award ribbons on various US military biography and unit pages with the new vector images. There is a .SVG file available for all US awards and most authorized foreign awards (see the templates: interservice, Army, DoN, USAF, USCG, and foreign). I'll also take the opportunity to replace ribbon rack images (where multiple awards are lumped into a single image) and create a ribbon rack table on articles that have a simple list (see example ).
Are you interested in coordinating? If you are not, do you have any advice for me (I'm sure there is some WPBIO guideline I'm overlooking). bahamut0013 19:12, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry to hear that you'll have limited time. I have started with USMC commandants, and already have run into a problem: Alfred M. Gray, Jr.'s list is obviously incomplete (there arent even any campaign medals). I've done some looking, but all of his bios online only list personal awards, and I cannot find a photo of him wearing any uniform but utilities (to check his ribbons)! Do you think you might be able to help within a few days? bahamut0013 21:40, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
I see your point about matching the ribbon image to the award name, which is why I'm refining my method of tabling the names. A good example would be James Mattis... it should be easy enough to follow, especially if the reader can count. I'm not really sure where accessibility comes into play; visually impaired readers use screen readers/voice browsers for the most part, and they don't usually have big trouble with tables (unless I have some tricky formatting going on, which I use just for the images anyway).
If you could figure out a way to pipe a link with an image, that would simplify everything... It would also look great. Alas, I know of no such way. Perhaps there is a template out there, waiting to be found? bahamut0013 16:29, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
That's fine with me. I'll leave the name tables uncentered... most of them stretch across the whole screen anyway. bahamut0013 16:38, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

e-mail

I'm having trouble opening the e-mails. I don't know if it is an AOL problem, but I can't open them. I hope to find a solution soon. Tony the Marine (talk) 18:09, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

  • The problem seems to be with my AOL mailbox. Right now I cna't even send e-mails. I have to check with them to see what the problemis. Tony the Marine (talk) 21:36, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
I think that it somehow fixed it's self. Good suggestions. I sent you an e-mail to test it, tell me if it passed. Tony the Marine (talk) 22:05, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
  • Good, e-mail received, everything back to normal. Tony the Marine (talk) 22:33, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

portal

Sounds like a fine idea. I'll get on it. bahamut0013 01:51, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

That is a great image. You can actually see the insignia I left there in 2005: Lance Corporal, between the General and Chief Petty Officer on the left. I wonder if my dog tags are still there... bahamut0013 02:22, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Too late, I just finished. bahamut0013 02:25, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Oh, poo. I figured since you used File:IwoJima Homage Insignia Devices.jpg for Portal:United States Marine Corps/picture/2009February, I'd use File:Iwo Jima amtracs.jpg for Portal:United States Marine Corps/article/2009February... but you put it in Portal:United States Marine Corps/picture/2010May. I think we can replace the May 2010 image easier than finding a good Iwo Jima image for Feb 2009.
And no, I'm not aware of whose stars those are... they weren't too tarnished, so I imagine they weren't more than ten or so years old perhaps. I got a juveniele thrill from overlapping them a bit with my crossed rifles... bahamut0013 02:43, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Hm. Well, I could care less about my chevron, it's certainly irrelevant to the portal and any other article. However, the black and white image is more poignient (spelling?) in my opinion. It's also a wider shot, showing more of the board. Its also a bit busier--more crowded, more interesting. It is remarkable, though... the two are almost identical in placement, but the subject is so different. It can get windy, and so many insignia have fallen off and been added... perhaps we could do both: a then and now? If not, my vote lies with File:IwoJima Homage Insignia Devices.jpg. bahamut0013 03:18, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
You and I, sir, think alike (like all great minds, I suppose). I used to have that Doonesbury cartoon tacked to the wall in my office. As long as we don't make it a constant thing, a little humor now and then never hurt anyone. As far as the Iwo Jima article is concerned: it is a good idea, but I have no sources other than the images. bahamut0013 12:35, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
That collection is certainly a great resource: lots of great photos. However, I would slow down on the images for now; we are set for more than two years! If we start getting too far ahead of ourselves, we'll have a harder time switching if need be, as well as adapting to any new finds or developments. I found it tough not to get carried away, but I dunno how well I would have done if I had that collection! Now to put some of that effort into other features...
Also, thanks for that revert on my talk page, but I'd just as soon keep it. I rarely delete user talk content, even if this anon is trying to get my goat. Not really sure why or in reference to what... bahamut0013 12:54, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

unindent

Yes, I found the same thing myself with the articles as well. There are so many great topics, but they are limited by what has been done. However, Wikipedia can only improve in the interveneing months, and the articles and bios we want to feature will get better until they are of the caliber needed to be featured on the portal. If not, a little cleanup and we can easily improve it to at least B-class. bahamut0013 13:19, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Portal:United States Marine Corps/picture/2011September: huh?! A Marine Corps F-18 from a Navy squadron? I think the photographer screwed up the caption, and I doubt that it's a Marine aircraft... perhaps a Marine in the pilots seat. In any case, it's probably not ideal for the USMC portal, unless we can clear out who and what it actually is. bahamut0013 13:49, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
My thought process there was to get something older, but not too old or black and white--that group photo in May was approx 1910s, and the March one was 2008. I figured a Vietnam photo would be great, and I was searching for helicopters since we were due for an aviation one. That came up in the search, and I liked it: old subject but with a modern look. The parachute looks fine, however, if you disagree with my thought process.
One thing I'd like to see is a great OIF combat photo for March 2013. I know that's looking WAAAYY ahead, but I'd like to get a photo from 2003 that has bullets flying to commemorate the 10 year anniversary. bahamut0013 12:36, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
One more late night thought before I hit the rack: Oliver North seems like a good bio for the portal, minimal cleanup will bring it to B-class. I have a copy of his book War Stories: Operation Iraqi Freedom for ref if you need it. Seems he was out hamming it up with the MAW during the initial drive to Baghdad.
Also, nice idea with that DYK... I never would have thought to do that. I'm so tired now... G'night, merry Christmas, etc. bahamut0013 05:10, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

USAF portal

YOU ARE CHEATING ON ME WITH THE AIR FORCE PORTAL!!!! YOU MANWHORE!!!!!

:D It's good to see initiative like that. Would you like me to help? bahamut0013 12:48, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

I've left a note on a couple editor's talk pages, but I don't expect too much interest. I've also left a note at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/United States military history task force#USAF portal, but I expect a lack of enthusiasm from any subject matter experts. If nobody is interested in taking stewardship of it, I would love to tackle this project as well (two back-to-back 96s for Christmas and New Years, I expect to be bored quickly). bahamut0013 14:20, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Once again, I feel the same way: I learn so much through Wikipedia. Often when I'm browsing, I'll open a new tab from a link that looks interesting, and before I know it, there are thirty tabs open and I've spent an hour just reading articles. Also note that I was being slightly sarcastic about being bored; I chose not to put in for pre-deployment leave due to the holiday breaks, so this is my time to spend with the wife. Ironically, there is a grain of truth: we don't have much money until my next paycheck to do anything, so we'll probably stay at home and get bored quickly. I any case, I do anticipate spending at least a couple days worth of sitting on the couch in my boxers doing nothing but editing and playing video games on the laptop; but that could change depending on what gifts I open on Thursday. bahamut0013 18:38, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

portal navbox

The navbox is for the utility of whomever is maintaining the portal, namely, me. I've noticed that when I'm doing some sort of work, I'm typing various page names over and over... It's just to navigate between the various pages the portal uses. I've added it to every portal page that might need periodic changes or fixes, excepting the monthly features. Obviously, not supposed to be visible by most users.
Not sure what you mean by extra white space. I see nothing in IE7 tht I didn't see before, but I suppose I can try deleting extra line breaks and let me know if that helps. bahamut0013 13:15, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Oh, and old template is just what it sounds like: the old page we used to manually update each month, but is no longer transcluded on the portal. If you want, you can delete it, or keep it for the page history. I've removed extra line breaks, let me know if that helps. bahamut0013 13:27, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Work vs publisher, news vs journal

Just to let you know, I use publisher= all the time in cite news templates because work= forces on italics and thus isn't suitable for broadcast sources (CBS News, etc.). I also use cite news for news magazines and general purpose magazines and reserve cite journal for academic journals. I feel bad that you're going through John S. McCain, Jr. and doing lots of mundane work to change all these to the way you see best. I certainly don't object (it all comes out the same in how the article looks to the reader), but it's never my goal to make others do lots of busy work when I put articles up for review (if anyone should do busy work it's me) ... Wasted Time R (talk) 22:34, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Yo

Since you're looking at my contribs, look past the surface and ask why I was editing those templates? I was doing a cleanup on Category:United States military navigational boxes.

What do you want thoughts on the portal about? bahamut0013 12:25, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

The portal update seemed to roll in perfectly smooth (the server being on UTC, midnight passed a couple hours ago). I think we can safely assume they will work without monitoring from now on.
