Mapping question[edit]

Hey, I'm working on something related to elections in New Zealand and was looking through the really nice maps you made. I was wondering if you happen to remember where you got the shape file for the 1993 New Zealand electoral districts, the ones in File:1993_New_Zealand_general_election_-_Results.svg? For some reason I can't seem to find them anywhere! Thanks :) - Astrophobe (talk) 17:40, 21 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I was able to find it anywhere either, unfortunately. I used the 1990 boundaries and adjusted them using File:NewZealandElectorates1993-Labeled.png as a base. Erinthecute (talk) 23:28, 21 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ah that makes sense, thanks so much for the prompt response. Do you happen to know where I can at least get my hands on the 1990 or 1996 shapefiles? I can't find any GIS boundary files of New Zealand electoral districts from before 2002 :( But of course I know I'm asking about something from a while ago, so no worries if it's not easy to recall. - Astrophobe (talk) 00:33, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly I don't, I'm in the same boat when it comes to GIS data - couldn't find any before 2002. I traced all the boundaries from 1990 and earlier from a book a Kiwi friend kindly scanned, and I made the 1996 map the same way I made 1993, by modifying the 1999 boundaries (of which I found a PDF here). That's as close as I was able to find unfortunately. Erinthecute (talk) 01:22, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh interesting, well thank you so much for taking the time to help me out, I really appreciate it! Knowing about this PDF is already very helpful. - Astrophobe (talk) 01:57, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Italian election results maps[edit]

Hi Erin. I wanted to ask you if you could re-color some of your Italian election results maps, so to have a palette of colors in the legend that does not go to black or anyway extremely dark tones for all parties. I am referring to:

An example of a color palette that is better – in one of your maps – is the one in File:2006_Italian_general_election_-_Vote_Strength.svg, where one can clearly distinguish dark red from dark blue. Thank you. (I am pinging User:Impru20 for their information) --Ritchie92 (talk) 14:40, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I agree with Ritchie92 that a clearer scale palette, similar to what was done with File:1948 Italian general election - Results.svg, will help improve comprehension of the map. Cheers! Impru20talk 15:03, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Another note: on the 1996 election map (File:1996_Italian_general_election_-_Vote_Strength.svg) could you also take care of distinguishing the colors between the Communist Refoundation Party and the Olive Tree? They are both shades of red. --Ritchie92 (talk) 08:00, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Swings[edit]

Hello. I noticed you added the swings to a couple of Bulgarian election articles, but did it to one decimal place. Given the percentage column uses two, would it not be best to also do the swing to two decimal places? It looks a bit odd to have different number of places in adjacent columns. Cheers, Number 57 10:04, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is true, but the past articles use one decimal point for the swing so I went with that. Erinthecute (talk) 12:05, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's better to keep the swings consistent with the rest of the table rather than previous articles. (I also blanked the swings in the most recent election as the figures are still updating and it's a bit of a pain to recalculate the swing every time). German elections articles[edit]

@Erinthecute: Hi, Erinthecute, I'm glad to find another user who is interested in articles about Germany, especially the German elections. I'm also glad to know that you are the one who made some of the election maps on Wikipedia. Those maps are very beautiful and easy to understand. As a relatively new user, I'm glad to find another user who shares my election-loving spirit.

I noticed that you recently have a proposal about simplifying the infoboxes in some German election articles, particularly about removing the "Leader's seat" and "Leader since" fields. I also feel that this is a good proposal. However, I feel that this proposal needs to be implemented all the way back to the 1949 federal election, which would make it a major edit that requires consensus. I read some of the page history of the German federal election articles, and it seems that your proposal is challenged by KamikazeMatrix26Juni, so I don't think we could reach a compromise soon. Hopefully, this proposal could be implemented in the future. Cheers. RyanW1995 (talk) 10:02, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Yeah, I posted on the talk page about it, and made the change after a few days since there were no replies. It was reverted and challenged on the talk page, but it seems the discussion was automatically archived yesterday. Erinthecute (talk) 12:18, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Erinthecute: I have trimmed lots of "fat" (unnecessary data) from the past German election infoboxes. These infoboxes definitely look a lot slimmer and nicer nowadays. Cheers. RyanW1995 (talk) 05:57, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Clickable images[edit]

<<this message was previously posted on your WikiMedia Commons talk page>>

Hello, it would seem that you are the author of:

  • File:Regions of Canada for House of Commons ridings (2021).svg

I am reaching out to you since I would like to understand how to create clickable graphics myself - as in clicking on different areas of the graphic link to different wiki pages. I see on your user page that you use Inkscape. I have never used this application, maybe I should... Does this app also allow the creation of a clickable heat map associated with the image? In my case, I am creating a composite image, a montage of clip art and other graphics and I want the ability to click on different elements and link to different wiki pages. Or, maybe this is only possible with SVG graphics? Would you be able to point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance. Enquire (talk) 11:57, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately I have no knowledge of how to integrate hyperlinks or interactive elements into SVG files, and I'm not sure if it's possible using Inkscape. Apologies. Erinthecute (talk) 11:15, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Would you by any chance have any suggestions on who else I could ask? Thanks Enquire (talk) 06:19, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

2021 German federal election[edit]

Hi Erinthecute, I appreciate your recent edits to the article about the 2021 German federal election. However, I also made a few edits, particularly to the party names in the bar boxes. I have corrected the party names in the bar boxes below the table to make them more consistent with the other Wikipedia articles about the previous German elections, particularly the 2017 German federal election. Based on the aformentioned article (the 2017 election), the largest party (the SPD in the most recent election) should be written in bold in the bar boxes. I hope my edits are reasonable. Cheers. RyanW1995 (talk) 10:22, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Understandable, I'll leave it be. This is a very minor issue, but I suppose it's worth talking a little about: the bolding of the largest party is useless and gives the impression that they're the "winners" of the election, which is clearly not the case in a multi-party system of coalitions like Germany. I've also never seen the abbreviation "B90/GRÜNE" outside of these specific bar boxes on English Wikipedia articles about German elections, which gives me the impression that it was made up by someone who didn't know much about German politics and has only been kept because of copious copy/pasting over the years. Changing it to the widely-used "GRÜNE", and shortening "DIE LINKE" to "LINKE", makes the boxes look marginally nicer by giving every party a one-word abbreviation. Erinthecute (talk) 11:06, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Erinthecute: Thanks for the reply, and I also feel that your comments are understandable. For example, in the 1969 West German federal election, the CDU/CSU received the largest percentage of popular votes, but Willy Brandt from the SDP managed to form a government with the FDP. However, the CDU/CSU is still written in bold in the bar graphs at the result section. Cheers. RyanW1995 (talk) 11:16, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Erinthecute: I have decided to use the official abbreviations for the party names (as shown in the table) in the bar graphs (such as GRÜNE and DIE LINKE). I hope that this is a good compromise. Cheers. RyanW1995 (talk) 15:09, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, thanks. Erinthecute (talk) 23:38, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

2021 Graz local election: wrong results[edit]

Hi! I'm not a regular editor on the English Wikipedia but wrote a good part of the German Wikipedia articles about the 2021 Graz local elections (city-wide Gemeinderat as well as the borough/district-wide Bezirksräte).

Thanks for your efforts for creating maps about the Graz municipal elections. Unfortunately, you seem to have used incomplete or incorrect data both in the "Results by party" as well as the "Winning party by municipal district" maps. For the city-wide municipal election (Gemeinderatswahl) you can find the final results (including absentee ballots) here.

The "Results by district" section seems to be about the Bezirksratswahlen where in every one of the 17 municipal districts a separate council gets elected, not the Gemeinderatswahl - but the last row featuring the "total results" appears to refer to the Gemeinderatswahl, again. The source you cite also points to the results page of the Bezirksratswahl 2021, not the Gemeinderatswahl 2021. So...something's mixed up. Sprudelwassersprudler (talk) 12:17, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oh god, you're right. I don't know how I made that mistake. Thank you for pointing this out. Erinthecute (talk) 12:22, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No worries and thank you for your contributions! (Just one more nit-picked point of criticism from a native German speaker: It's spelled 'Gemeinderat', not 'Gemeindesrat'.) Sprudelwassersprudler (talk) 15:05, 1 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Map of the 2021 German federal election[edit]

Hi Erin, it seems that you are the one who made the map at the bottom of the infobox that showed the results of the 2021 election. Since the final results have been published, it seems that a few minor adjustments to your map are needed. These are a few mistakes that need to be corrected.

Total seats

  • CDU: 53 party list seats → 54 seats

North Rhine-Westphalia

  • Greens: 24 party list seats → 23 seats
  • CDU: 11 party list seats → 12 seats

I can't make the adjustments by myself, since your map is too complicated for me to edit (and I also don't have a program that can edit SVG file), so I hope you could make the aformentioned adjustments, so your map would still be accurate. Cheers :) RyanW1995 (talk) 13:42, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

2021 German federal election navbox[edit]

Hey Erin. In no small part thanks to you, we now have many great articles on the 2021 German federal election. I made this simple navbox for easier navigation between these articles. I was wondering whether you think it would be a good idea to add this to the articles, and if so, whether you have any suggestions. Thanks in advance. Luxorr (talk) 20:19, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That's a great idea and the naxbox looks good, I support adding it to the relevant articles. The only thing I'd think to improve it is adding government formation, which could link to the section on the main election page since it doesn't have a page of its own. Erinthecute (talk) 23:44, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I added government formation to the navbox and then added it to all the secondary articles. I got rid of the Main article and See also templates at the top of these articles, considering those links can now be found in the navbox. Luxorr (talk) 08:36, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New maps[edit]

Hello. The maps you're adding to West German election articles are great, but I'm not sure about the shading of East Germany – given it was a separate country at the time, I think it would be best to not colour it at all. Leaving it striped suggests either it was actively disputed territory where elections couldn't take place or, because it is shaded in grey, that it is somehow linked to the CDU (which is shown in shades of grey where it won only a narrow majority).

Also, a formatting tip – capitalising the second and third words in "Constituency Seat Results" and "List Seat Results" is wrong and it should be "Constituency seat results" etc. Cheers, Number 57 02:10, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Maya Tesa Warrandyte By Election[edit]

Please provide reasons you are vandalising 2023 Warrandyte State by-election page and in particular targeting Independent Maya Tesa? The information is compliant with WIKI guidelines. The image is compliant with similar images displayed in infoboxes from Australian by elections. There is no rule stipulating a genuine Independent cannot have a dedicated paragraph as do the major and minor parties. JJMOON59 (talk) 09:59, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  1. @JJMOON59: Your contributions have clearly given Maya Tesa greater weight compared to comparable independent and minor party candidates. The inclusion of her own header with additional bold formatting in the candidates section is especially excessive. The aim of my edit was to restore balance between coverage of the various candidates. I removed her from the infobox in the absence of polling, results, or coverage indicating that she is a prominent candidate; I also hid the Liberal and Greens candidates for the sake of generosity. If you wish to include extended prose for Maya Tesa, I would suggest expanding other independent and minor party candidates' descriptions in a similar manner. As it stands, she is given undue weight which should be cut down. Erinthecute (talk) 00:21, 29 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Erin, the results map for the 2020 Queensland state election article has two electorates numbered 80 in the legend. It appears that Burleigh is intended to be 90 instead of 80. Thanks for the maps! Onetwothreeip (talk) 06:26, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
