Wow. I'm SO delighted to see your name again. ^^ Wait, you're under a new name now. :) I must say, your new signature, combined with the old name inside the template, got me confused for a second. I guess I'm slow today. :) Hope your summer was exciting, and welcome back! I saw you already got back to the wiki-work, it is about time. :D Take care, --PeaceNT (talk) 05:39, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

thank you very much for protecting Dubstep. as you can probably see i'm trying to compromise with this guy, but he seems intent on imposing his thing in a lot of music articles. and his thing is mostly stub at present :( --Kaini (talk) 02:02, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback

During my successful Rfa, you expressed concern about my report of User:Fullyang to WP:UAA. I had actually created that account per an Account Creation request as part of my duties on the account creation team. I didn't notice until after I'd created it that the e-mail address was using the Fullyang.com domain name. Do you still think the UAA request was wrong? I'd like to hear your thoughts.--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 03:36, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

  • I'm interested to understand why you did not feel that this user name is in any way promotional. Every article that he/she has created recently relates to a non notable promotional audio tape of a non notable walk in Oyster Bay. I have prodded the lead article and one of the buildings to see if others agree.Regards --Paste Let’s have a chat. 09:20, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Regarding your essay

Well said... I'm getting tired by the many non-vios reported there. I mean you expect false positives from the bots but the other reporters seem to be even worse... there's way less mistakes at AIV, even. I think something needs to be done because it's making UAA pretty useless as a page for intentional violations (what's the difference between this and the recently reported User:Wikidududu? O_o). -- Mentifisto 13:58, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

dubstep opening para

hey seckle/filelakeshoe... something i've spoken about with martin clark before - and that i am presently reconsidering - is the opening paragraph of the dubstep article. it could definitely use improvement. in a way it doesn't say much about what dubstep sounds like - instead, what it is busy doing is establishing notability, who coined the phrase, where the sound came from, and that sort of thing. here it is, broken down:

Dubstep is a genre of electronic music that has its roots in London's early 2000s UK garage scene.

this statement is fine - what this article is about, in a broad sense, and some context.

Musically, dubstep is distinguished by its dark mood, sparse rhythms, and emphasis on bass.

this could do with improvement - it's OK, i guess, and sort of explains the difference between, say, dubstep and psy-trance, but it could be a hell of a lot better.

Dubstep started to spread beyond small local scenes in late 2005 and early 2006, with many websites devoted to the genre appearing on the Internet and thus aiding the growth of the scene, such as dubstepforum, the download site Barefiles and blogs such as gutterbreakz.

this is where the problem becomes apparent - i'm reading this article for the first time. whilst things like sources, asserting notability, and the internet as a disseminating factor in the spread of the genre are undoubtedly important, a first-time reader of the article has no interest in this. his concerns are more along the line of "what is it?".

Simultaneously, the genre was receiving extensive coverage in music magazines such as The Wire and online publications such as Pitchfork Media, with a regular feature entitled The Month In: Grime/Dubstep.

same problem as before. i think i actually wrote this sentence :)

Interest in dubstep grew significantly after BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs started championing the genre, beginning with a show devoted to it (entitled "Dubstep Warz") in January 2006.

and again, same problem... notability paranoia..
it's now a big, stable article. there is plenty of space to include all this stuff. the opening paragraph should include more references to other musics, more descriptive stuff regarding what this music actually sounds like.

e.g.

House music is a style of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago, Illinois, USA in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was initially popularized in mid-1980s discothèques catering to the African-American,[1] Latino,[1] and gay[1][2][3] communities, first in Chicago, then in New York City and Detroit. It eventually reached Europe before becoming infused in mainstream pop & dance music worldwide. House music is strongly influenced by elements of soul- and funk-infused varieties of disco. House music generally mimics disco's percussion, especially the use of a prominent bass drum on every beat, but may feature a prominent synthesizer bassline, electronic drums, electronic effects, funk and pop samples, and reverb- or delay-enhanced vocals.

Psychedelic rock is a style of rock music that is inspired or influenced by psychedelic culture, or attempts to replicate the mind-altering experiences of hallucinogenic drugs.[1] It emerged during the mid 1960s among garage and folk rock bands in Britain and the United States. Psychedelic rock bridged the transition from early blues-based rock to progressive rock, art rock, experimental rock and heavy metal; and also drew on non-Western sources such as Indian music's ragas and sitars.

Drum and bass (commonly abbreviated to d&b, DnB, dnb, d'n'b, drum n bass, drum & bass, dNb), also known as jungle, is a type of electronic dance music which emerged in the late 1980s. The genre is characterized by fast breakbeats (typically between 165–185 bpm, occasional variation is noted in older compositions), with heavy sub-bass lines. Drum and bass began as an offshoot of the United Kingdom rave scene of the very early 1990s. Over the first decade of its existence, the incorporation of elements from various musical genres lent to many permutations in its overall style.

before i make any big edits, i'm very open to suggestions on how to improve the lede of the article! --Kaini (talk) 23:35, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Thames Valley University

Hi there. Thanks for your recent edit to Template:Universities and colleges in London. Although Thames Valley University does have a campus in Ealing, London, most of the university (and its students) are based at sites in Slough and Reading in Berkshire. Therefore, as such, Thames Valley University is not a 'London' university. However it is listed in Template:Universities and colleges in South East England. I have reverted your (goodfaith) edit, but thanks. Bleaney (talk) 21:41, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Actually, completely ignore what I have just said! On further investigation, it does appear that Thames Valley University sees its base in 'West london'. That is where the 'head office' is and where the vice chancellor is based etc, AND it markets itself as a London university. I stand corrected. I will put back your change! Starobrno

Hello Filelakeshoe. Thank you for the improvements of my imperfect English at this article. I wrote it after a funny excursion to the brewery with my friends, "co-drunks" from South Moravian villages. I created more articles related to Brno ([1], [2], [3]) and I plan to write more, e. g. translation of this excellent list. May I ask you for your help later? (mainly the language cleanup). Thanks again. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 07:59, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Okay, thanks. Should you want to learn more, it's Crown copyright. It's really only the US (and maybe some other country? I don't remember which) where federal works are automatically PD. VernoWhitney (talk) 00:53, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Kvelertak

On Talk:Kvelertak, you wrote

Take it to AfD if it hurts your head. Even if you don't believe the assertions to notability, the fact that the assertions and references are there means this article isn't speediable.

Actually, the article, as it existed when you removed the speedy tag, makes no assertions of notability whatsoever. It merely states that they are a band who released an album. The references provided verify those facts: they are a band and they've released an album. The problem isn't that I don't believe their assertion of notability, but that no assertion of notability is made, and no references can be found that would help me improve the article to the point of making such an assertion. Hi Antonín. That AfD included three articles, but fair enough, I got the feeling an "ancient science" which was considered non-notable in 2006 would definitely still be considered non-notable today. Alternative medicine topics are basically not allowed to have articles on Wikipedia unless there are a load of scientific journals slagging them off, the sources on that google books list would all be dismissed as unreliable/promotional/not independent. Don't get me wrong, this is the one thing I hate the most about Wikipedia, but that's how it is, and you're in for a Galileo-style lynching if you want to fight to keep this article, let me warn you! Good luck :) - filelakeshoe 13:03, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
I know nothing about Pranic healing and I'm not at all a fan of alternative medicine :) However, 3,600 results on G-Books and 880 000 G-hits suggest that this term is not entirely trivial and people might search for an explanation here on Wikipedia, no matter how unscientific the topic is. That's why I object. Also, the AfD took place 5 years ago and Wikipedia changed a lot from that time. I think this topic deserves another discussion about its suitability for this project. ... I'm not afraid of a lynch, the online lynching can't hurt me :) In any case, thanks for your warning. --Vejvančický (talk | contribs) 13:42, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

Need help removing a title or template from the search engine

Hello. I got in way over my head with Wikipedia. You guys must be really smart...I'm not. I am trying to remove a title or template from the search engine. It is: A CINCINNATI PRIVATE EYE PROTECTING PRINCESS DI: A Fascinating Footnote In History. Could I impose upon your kindness and get you to remove it for me. I've spend hours on this site trying to get the title removed and now I'm just going in circles. Thanks for not making me feel dumb. I appreciate your assistance in removing this title. Also, on a shallow note; I would not want anyone to google "A CINCINNATI PRIVATE EYE PROTECTING PRINCESS DI..." and get the Wikipedia listing of my botched attempts. Regards LuvToRead3 (talk) 18:16, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Not sure what you mean - nothing will come up in Google. If the article title still comes up in Google search it won't link to anything, since the page has been deleted. - filelakeshoe 00:17, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Hello Filelakeshoe. Sorry, don't be angry at me for my comment about inflective languages, mainly Czech, but some users think English is one world language. I just want in our names Czech diacritics. Sorry for my bad English. --Midi7 (talk) 13:31, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

I wasn't angry, I found it really funny :) It's sth I have to deal with all the time, as an English person learning Czech, the assumption that English speakers are all linguistically illiterate.. which I understand, because we don't have to learn another language to communicate with people. I also wish people would leave diacritics alone. - filelakeshoe 14:16, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, I thought you was angry (because Pane Bože in your new template). I hope you like our country. With greetings, --Midi7 (talk) 14:23, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps that wasn't the best expression. In English "dear lord!" or "oh my god!" can be used to express surprise as well as anger. - filelakeshoe 16:23, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

Eyecon

Hello Filelakeshoe. You recently deleted the page I created for the Australian Roleplaying convention 'Eyecon' citing a copyright violation. The name Eyecon is a registered trademark in Australia and is owned by the organisation that runs the Eyecon convention (the Sydney Roleplaying Games Association). The convention exists and information about it can be found at http://www.eye-con.info. Can you please reverse your deletion — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lukestrotz (talkcontribs) 06:31, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi - actually I deleted a page someone created in 2008, which was a copyright violation, i.e. the text had been copied and pasted from another website. The page you created in 2011 was deleted by another admin, not because of copyright, but because the convention's notability was in question. That something "exists" isn't a good enough reason for it to be included on Wikipedia, it has to be written about in independent reliable sources. I can restore the page to a page in your userspace if you want to work on it. - filelakeshoe 09:27, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi. The article used as a reference was issued end of 2011 and it asserts she's 23 at the time. Was my deduction too quick? --Koui² (talk) 14:15, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Yep. The article might also have been written earlier than it was published, it's not a safe deduction. I tried to find her birthdate published somewhere online but couldn't.. - filelakeshoe 14:20, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
I've been trying hard too, but this XLR8R article was about the only paper where one could get an idea of her age/DoB... Not sure what's going on here to be honest - didn't really understand the suggestion on WT:CSD. If I read it correctly it was asking for a speedy criterion for images which are uploaded twice, which is CSD F1. But the image you tagged is used on an article, and you haven't specified where the redundant version is, where is it? - filelakeshoe 17:46, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
It's the multiple images at the bottom if you look there's three of them. I don't know how to make the CSD so they can be erased as there's no need for the other two resolutions as the image was made smaller. Swifty*talk 17:59, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Aah, I see. Well I'm not sure if F1 covers this, it's not really clear, I think it should though. I deleted the larger resolution versions, at the very least they fail the NFCC so could also be deleted under G12.. I'm sure no one will object.. - filelakeshoe 18:03, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

PHI Inc.

Hello, I am relatively new here with only a few edits under my belt. One was fairly substantial. I appreciated your help with my PHI Inc. Article by moving it to my sandbox. I have spent several (many) hours working on this article. I have even learned how to and edited some of my very own templates so that I can get the coding and format of the page to look right. It is my attempt to make the PHI Inc Page fit to a uniform format followed by all aviation company pages, specifically helicopter services pages. I have several Helicopter service companie articles that I would like to add as well as many edits to the existing pages that are well outdated. As you can tell I work in the helicopter business and it is a passion of mine.

However I am having some trouble. I tried to republish brief overview of the article I am working on in my sandbox to wikipedia, again under the PHI Inc heading. This was only a brief overview with only basic company overview and a

Regarding your declining the CSD, it was at AfD, and while there someone tagged it A7, and it was CSD'd before the AfD could close. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Peer Posipal. I wasn't sure if I could tag it G4, since it was at AfD, but the actual deletion happened by CSD, and you can't G4 something that was CSD'd. I'll take it back to AfD again if you wish, but I'd rather not waste the bandwidth. The subject of the article never played in a "fully professional league," so he fails WP:NFOOTY. Let me know if you still don't want to delete it. LivitEh?/What? 14:02, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, in retrospect I should have left it at AfD. The article which was speedied per A7 had one sentence saying he was a footballer and who his father was and that was it, no assertion to notability. This newer version asserts notability, so it's not A7. If you dispute the new article's claim that he played in the Bundesliga, which AFAIK is a fully professional league, then take it to AfD. - filelakeshoe 14:05, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
Aww, rats, I missed that. I swear, as an American who is not at all interested in soccer/football, and even less clueful about the whole international club/team/league/division/cup/challenge/whatever system, these FOOTY articles always get me twisted up. Spotted in passing

Hi. I spotted I should probably point out I'm generally (though of course not entirely) pro-diacritics, but I would like to see ALL diacritics-related RMs, either way, to cease until we come to an agreement on how to update the guidelines. And editors who keep nominating them informed, and blocked if they keep refusing to be patient, because it IS getting disruptive now. - filelakeshoe 22:57, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Surprisingly, at this point I would agree. However I cannot see how anyone can expect an agreement to update the guidelines to happen. That was the purpose of the Beyoncé invitation, despite the fact that it was flawed due to my own assumption that because I consider it more an issue for BLPs than other articles (which evidently isn't a view widely shared among either for- or against- Chicago MOS). The fact is that the 90 invited who were pro-diacritics in passing (which under normal circumstances would include me, passing by) simply (a) did not turn up and (b) the 20 that did could not make as much noise as the 10 against. I'm sorry but under this sort of dynamic I cannot see how anyone can expect an agreement to update the (which) guidelines, much as I'd love to see one. Of course I'm new to this so I could be as wrong in taking a pessimistic view as I was wrong in taking an optimistic one 4 weeks ago. Ultimately as long as no one starts hockeyizing composers and painters it probably doesn't matter. In ictu oculi (talk) 00:31, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Don't despair, the discussion which went on at the BLP talk page was much more constructive than the one last spring at WT:UE. People even went as far as removing diacritics from people's signatures, didn't see anything that ridiculous this time around. The important thing is compromising, I must admit I'm actually fine with the title Novak Djokovic (or Djoković) for example. But not so much with Ziga Pance since he doesn't even play outside of Slovenia. Once people stop being so extreme we can come to an agreement. - filelakeshoe 00:45, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I'm not despairing, just a little bit wiser about the dynamics than I was. I'm still not convinced about (a) Icelandic eth and thorn, (b) Czechs and Mexicans who have green cards for the US, but (c) I have changed my mind about romanization of Serbian names. Despite the fact that I have Alexander and Bursać's BSC grammar on my shelves the penny hadn't really dropped that Serbian isn't a cyrillic alphabet language and that probably needs writing into WP:UE some quiet day in the future, by Serbian editors, not me. The Đoković / Djokovic case is an interesting exception in that despite his website being at Đoković it's a justifiable case of ITF rules genuinely wagging the dog and arguing for a genuine Tennis names bubble - though turning Č č ć into C c c per Nikola Cacic ("Kakik"?) doesn't serve anybody. Because the edit history shows more than one account adding content to the page. G7 only applies when only one author has contributed content. - filelakeshoe 16:12, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I'm a new contributor, and still learning. I wanted to create a page of Andre Ziehe, it's a biography. And it's deleted. I know it was not perfect. But now, I have made another page of Andre Ziehe but I tried it on my user page first. I hope you would consider review it, and notify me whether the article is good enought to be moved into it's own page. It's here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Sedona25/Andre_Ziehe. Sincerely,

Hi there, the problem with this article is that it doesn't say why he's significant, although it is well formatted and sourced. Read through the notability criteria for entertainers and expand the article to include information about what he's actually done. - filelakeshoe 19:37, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

dubstep/reynolds

main problem is that it says "Simon Reynolds examined the idea of any links," I see no such "examination" in the paragraph cited. The connection between ketamine and "the origins of dubstep" is not something that can be verified using this cite. Reynolds simply acknowledges that is is a rumour, but he's not really telling us anything. While I accept that verifiable connections between certain musical styles and specific substances can be made, I don't believe there is strong enough evidence offered in this instance to feature note of it in the article, especially not in the context of tying ketamine to the "the origins of dubstep." Semitransgenic talk. 15:18, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Well he's telling us that there's a dispute in the scene over it, which is definitely true (High Rankin did a couple of topical pieces bashing use of ket and mephedrone), and that that short lived strain of dubstep may have been influenced by ketamine. Could these be mentioned with more source material if it appears do you think? I tried looking for more people writing about this but most were just blogs discussing that Reynolds article.. it definitely has nothing to do with "origins" though, you're quite right there. - filelakeshoe 15:26, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm not sure it's necessary, especially not without usable verifiable sources. If we were talking about, for example, "rave," we could without question connect it with e usage, there are multiple academic sources to draw upon, but I can't say the same for ketamine and dubstep. I would personally be wary of making a direct association without good sources. Semitransgenic talk. 18:19, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Can you take a look at Floyd storm murphy iii?

Hey, Filelakeshoe, I saw you doing CSDs and I'd like to ask your advice on Floyd storm murphy iii. It looks like a hoax (sources that give producer credits for the FanMail album don't mention him, and I can't find anything else that backs up the claims, either), but I'm not sure it's obvious enough for G3, so I BLPPRODded it. Can you take a look and let me know what you think? Thanks! Writ Keeper 16:34, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Some typos and misspellings are acceptable as redirects, e.g. Hadjuk Split. The criterion for speedy deletion is implausible typo, I would guess that this is not implausible since someone misspelled it that way when creating the article. Oh, just looked through his edits and found Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/GreenUniverse, now I get it, someone else agrees with me that some articles shouldn't have been merged/deleted/redirected therefore we're the same person. Great logic! Two points, 1) You're supposed to notify people whose conduct you're discussing on-wiki and 2) you can be rest assured that no one who's been an admin for 4 years would be stupid enough to take a content dispute to ArbCom. Same writing style? Don't see that. Thousands of editors registered or started editing in 2007, that is not sufficient evidence. Histmerge

Hi, I see you're active so I'd like to ask you to perform a histmerge for this c&p move I've come across. Yes, but do so at WP:RfD rather than using speedy deletion. Also, bear in mind that "no pages link here" is not a good reason for not having a redirect; the fact is that someone might type Keoloewa into the search box. - filelakeshoe 20:58, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Regions of CZ

hi there,

if they are called "South Bohemia Region" or "South Bohemia (region)" I don't particularly care much about. "Warwickshire" is a bad example because the name is written that way, not in separate brackets. If you look at other regions and states such as "Connecticut" and "Bavaria" you will see that it is not called "State of Connecticut". But again, I am open to the different variants. The most important thing is that it's kept in English, because this is official policy after all. Gryffindor (talk) 20:19, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

Sure, sure, the point is if you say "I live in Connecticut", then it's clear you mean the state, if you say "I live in South Bohemia" it's also clear you mean the region, if you say "I live in Plzeň/Ústí nad Labem/Zlín" then it undoubtedly means the city. I'm not advocating moves to "Plzeňský kraj" or anything but that name should be translated as "Plzeň region" and not just Plzeň. - filelakeshoe 20:23, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
That's fine with me too. Gryffindor (talk) 08:14, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

I do not wish to be confrontational, but you should know that I saw your comment, and judged the article to be suitable for a {{speedy}} delete in both versions. The article as restored by you still qualifies under speedy criteria. I will not delete it again, as this gives the appearance of indecision, but suggest that another admin should do so.--Anthony Bradbury"talk" 16:23, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

OK. I never like applying speedy criteria to articles with loads of history, and no one commented on the article history at the AfD. Regardless the AfD is time up so it can probably be deleted. - filelakeshoe 18:45, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
With respect, because your admin experience is slightly longer than mine, history in an article is not relevant. Assertion of notability in the history is, and there was none in the history contained in this article. --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 21:01, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

G'day Filelakeshoe.. I'd be very curious to know your reasoning for closing this AfD as "keep"? Seemed pretty close to me. ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 14:39, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

It was a clear consensus to keep. That's "keep" meaning "don't delete the information", if you still want to propose a merge, you can do on the article's talk page. - filelakeshoe 14:50, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

This is the problem

Your closure as keep is being taken as a decision against merge (diff). I'd really appreciate it if you could either make it clear, per what you have said above, that there was no prejudice against a merge. ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 15:36, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Okay, I added my above comment to the AfD, but I don't believe it's "my closure as keep" but rather people's comments in the discussion. Not everyone was in favour of merging. Make sure you're not making a chili con caballo out of this. - filelakeshoe 15:41, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

False flag of Moravia

Hello Sir, according to information of the czech wikipedia Morava/Moravia has no flag. This flag is ¨so called Moravian flag¨ there if so. Please, double check and make it right as this information is incorrect. I am more than happy to be in assistance if need Carlmarche (talk) 16:48, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

The problematic regarding the Moravian flag is a bit complicated and I do not expect you would understand it if you do not speak Czech. However, as I said before, there are information and I am more than happy to help you to understand it. This particular flag is a one what never can be an official flag of Moravia for more reasons. Only some mistaken Moravians wish to be it. On the end of day, the source of a website on ist own you have provided, cannot be accepted as support to this information. Carlmarche (talk) 17:05, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Hey, I do speak Czech and I can read cs:Moravská vlajka, so please, explain. According to that article, the "so-called Moravian flag" with no historic basis is the one with the bicolour with the emblem placed over it (which also violates the rule of tincture, so clearly cannot be historic), but it doesn't address the one with just the red and yellow stripes. - filelakeshoe 17:14, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
Officially moravian flag does not exists, never did. There are some flags used in Moravia in the history, but this particular one(yello-red with or without the shield) is known only as a symbol of a group of Moravians since cca 1990. There is no single prove that this flag is the flag of Moravia. Unless you can find one i have to ask you to remove both the pictures of it from the page, please, as this information is really incorrect. More information about this matter you can read on http://www.moravska-vlajka.eu/ for example. Thanx for understanding Carlmarche (talk) 20:31, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
We really should not try to decide which flag is the one. Simply because there is no one. The last one used in the history of Moravia is the three color on the top of the page Morava. The oldest one in the Moravian history is the blue one with the eagle on it. None of those two is the flag of Morava neither any of those two mentioned above. Can only suggest, we leave the page without any flag. The matter itself should stay on the page Moravska vlajka I assume. I am planning to create an English version of it. Would you be keen to help me with it? Carlmarche (talk) 03:21, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
I've removed it for now. Translating cs:Moravská vlajka is a good idea. I just wonder whether sentences like Její oficiální podoba, na rozdíl od znaku, však neexistuje, neboť vlajka Moravě nikdy udělena nebyla can actually be verified by the source. If there were many flags used during history isn't it wrong to say "a Moravian flag was never made"? - filelakeshoe 09:58, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
First at all, thank you for the understanding. A single flag was never officially given to Morava by a monarch. However, there are flags used in Morava since mid 13th century. The King Karel IV used this blue flag as a symbol of (markrabstvi) of Morava although we have no source saying he actually have made it officially the flag of Morava. Hey all :).

I'm dropping you a note because you've been involved in dealing with feedback from the Article Feedback Tool. To get a better handle on the overall quality of comments now that the tool has become a more established part of the reader experience, we're undertaking a round of hand coding - basically, taking a sample of feedback and marking each piece as inappropriate, helpful, so on - and would like anyone interested in improving the tool to participate :).

You can code as many or as few pieces of feedback as you want: this page should explain how to use the system, and there is a demo here. Once you're comfortable with the task, just drop me an email at okeyes@wikimedia.org and I'll set you up with an account :).

Pabel British Singer

Hi,

You have got the situation wrong as I am writing a article about a new upcoming musican artist. This isn't a promotional biography, this is the truth and accurate article as the whole texts placed on the article is truth and accurate along with the references. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.184.5.48 (talk) 14:01, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi, we generally don't write articles about new upcoming musicians, only established musicians who get coverage in reliable sources from third parties (news reviews, reviews on sites like pitchfork, NME, DJ mag, etc.) The references on the article now are all self-published, so not enough. Have a read of WP:MUSIC - this is the threshold for inclusion on Wikipedia for musicians, and this singer doesn't seem to meet it yet. - filelakeshoe 14:06, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Hmm I understand now, right ok urm you can delete the article and it'll be back once in a famous or popular side of artists. You know this singer "Bilal (British singer)" he is basically the same as Pabel. Can you give me some information's in regards to that? thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.184.5.48 (talk) 14:01, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Okay. Bilal (British singer) might be notable, because he was placed on rotation nationally (which is one of the WP:MUSIC criteria). With some more sources that article would probably be okay. - filelakeshoe 14:20, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I am curious about your reversion of my request for speedy deletion here. The page is in the way of a non-controversial technical move of the article to its proper name. The only user who appeared to oppose this was someone who doesn't appear to understand what speedy deletion and moves are for, and thought I was trying to maliciously delete a valuable redirect. If you like, you can participate in the discussion at Talk:Hyakunin Isshu#Requested move, but I really don't see why I should have to use RM when the move is completely uncontroversial like this. It would have been nice if either you or the other user had made some attempt to contact me about my speedy deletion request being denied, so I could have responded sooner... elvenscout742 (talk) 03:53, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Well it was not clear to me at all whether this article was about "Hyakunin Isshu" in general or the "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" - from the lede paragraph, it seems to be the former, so the present title seemed to be more appropriate. Moving the article to Ogura Hyakunin Isshu would mean reducing the scope of the article, so it is an editorial decision, not a non-controversial technical move. - filelakeshoe 10:34, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
I admit the opening is not very well-written at the moment, but: (1) the article was originally clearly about Teika's collection[6]; (2) most of the article below the first paragraph (5/6 of the sections) discuss Teika's collection exclusively; (3) it is fair to assume, then, that almost all of the edit history relates to Teika's collection, and needs to be preserved in a move; (4) when the word Hyakunin Isshu is used in both English and Japanese, 99.9% of the time it is being used as shorthand for the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu; and (5) all of the other hyakunin isshu are explicitly parodies of or inspired by Teika's collection, and are not individually notable enough to be discussed in a separate article (they should therefore be given a subsection of the article Ogura Hyakunin Isshu). elvenscout742 (talk) 15:15, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Thank you

Hey Z, I'm such a bad friend I did not remember this username at first sight! Anyway the Electronic Music bit on your page made sense who you are. I came back mainly to retain the admin bit, will not be much active around here shortly. I'm happy to see you still around here. Beautiful weekend, --PeaceNT (talk) 02:32, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

No worries, it's been a while, good on you for saving the sysop bit, you do not want to go through RFA nowadays, "adminship is no big deal" is a thing of the past. Merry xmas and happy new year. - filelakeshoe 12:57, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Removing the "popularity" parameter from Template:Infobox music genre

Hi! I saw you remove the "popularity" parameter from the infobox of Grindcore, and was at first confused about why you did that. I took the time to check the talk page of the template and saw your discussion, and I agree with it. My reason for writing this note is to suggest that you link to Template talk:Infobox music genre#"Mainstream popularity" in your edit summary, so that others can see why you are removing the parameter as well (I was ready to revert your edit as "unexplained" until I checked the template talk page). Thanks! MrMoustacheMM (talk) 17:59, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for comments, I will continue this work once I think of a more efficient way to do it (my reason for restoring the parameter for now), and will use a better edit summary. - filelakeshoe 18:31, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Filelakeshoe. I've noticed your correction of my edit. You are right, when I write about news websites, I should cite more than one. However, the information has been first confirmed by TV NOVA and quickly spread on the Internet. I watched the election and I spotted this sad news at a time when it was virtually everywhere. Of course, it was not clear from my edit. --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 07:28, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Btw, I've added the missing citations and made some tweaks to the article Moravian traditional music. Have a nice weekend. --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 07:28, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Zdravím, User:In ictu oculi mi vás doporučil (asi jako zkušenýho wikipeďáka:). Co si myslíte o změně názvu z Czech Crown Jewels na Bohemian Crown Jewels? S pozdravem, Jirka.h23 (talk) 09:21, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Zdravím. Název "Bohemian..." je alespoň důsledný s jinými články, jelikož české království je stále označeno v angličtině jako "(Lands of) the Bohemian Crown" (nikoli "Czech Crown"), a stejně King of Bohemia, atd.
Jirka.h23 (talk) 07:55, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Syringes

The Czech you learned it from was either kidding you or didn’t understand the meaning of the English word, it quite obviously does not make any sense in the sentence. The usual Czech word for fire engine is “hasičská stříkačka” or “požární stříkačka”, commonly shortened to “stříkačka”. “Požární vozidlo” may well be the technical term used nowadays by fire departments, but it’s not something you would hear from general population. Anyway the tongue twister most likely predates the trucks used for this purpose since the second half of the 20th century, you should think of something like on the pictures in Fire engine#History or cs:Hasičská stříkačka.—Emil J. 14:32, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

To clarify a potential misunderstanding, “stříkačka” can also denote a syringe, it’s just that this meaning is not applicable in this context. In principle, the word may refer to anything that ejects water or other liquids.—Emil J. 17:21, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Filelakeshoe. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Again, we're very sorry about this issue; hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after this :). If you have any questions, just drop them at the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) 21:55, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

European qualification for Malta

  • 1st place to CL
  • Cup winners, 2nd place, 3rd place to EL
    • If cup winners also finish 1st, then Cup runners to EL
    • If cup winners also finish 2nd or 3rd, then 4th place to EL

Since Valletta is not certain of 1st place, then we cannot say Silema Wanderers is certain of EL, unless they are also certain of finishing 4th, but they are not. Chanheigeorge (talk) 07:44, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Yes she ran away after her husband went to an interrogation related to another incident, a fight in which he participated during her performance. Some kids from another passing train shot her dead body on a video which is now available on TV NOVA server. Request for moving

Hello Filelakeshoe, could you please move articles Tomas Hertl and Michal Jordan to correct form of their names? Correct names are with diacritics Tomáš Hertl and Michal Jordán. Miďonek Michal Jordán looks like he is only a Green card not a US citizen, and is more notable as an international playing for the Czech national team so should be covered by guidance at WP:HOCKEY: "All player pages should have diacritics applied (where required, according to the languages of the player in question)" In ictu oculi (talk) 08:23, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Gabber

that was a bit of a coincidence, I wasn't aware of recent discussion on this, spotted someone had redirected Gabber by chance. To be honest I'm not even sure there should be three separate articles called Gabber, Hardcore (electronic dance music), and Mainstream hardcore, and the latter states that "hardcore" grew out of gabber, but it's arguably the other way around - usable source on that here ("Living Through Pop" p.151). Sourcing is poor for both the "Gabber" and "Mainstream hardcore" article (essentially the same topic). My preference is for a single "Hardcore" article. Semitransgenic talk. 14:47, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

I would think that nowadays hardcore and gabber might have different enough connotations for them to have separate articles, though not sure about available sources for the more recent developments in these styles. From the sources I can find on google books it seems that gabber and hardcore were used interchangeably in some circles in the 90s, so perhaps that article that suggests hardcore came out of gabber is actually trying to say "the second wave of gabber came out of gabber" which is pretty obvious anyway. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 07:47, 27 June 2014 (UTC)

Language-population update project

Hi. The 18th edition of Ethnologue just came out, and if we divide up our language articles among us, it won't take long to update them. I would appreciate it if you could help out, even if it's just a few articles (5,000 articles is a lot for just me), but I won't be insulted if you delete this request.

A largely complete list of articles to be updated is at Category:Language articles citing Ethnologue 17. The priority articles are in Category:Language articles with old Ethnologue 17 speaker data. These are the 10% that have population figures at least 25 years old.

Probably 90% of the time, Ethnologue has not changed their figures between the 17th and 18th editions, so all we need to do is change "e17" to "e18" in the reference (ref) field of the language info box. That will change the citation for the artcle to the current edition. Please put the data in the proper fields, or the info box will flag it as needing editorial review. The other relevant fields are "speakers" (the number of native speakers in all countries), "date" (the date of the reference or census that Ethnologue uses, not the date of Ethnologue!), and sometimes "speakers2". Our convention has been to enter e.g. "1990 census" when a census is used, as other data can be much older than the publication date. Sometimes a citation elsewhere in the article depends on the e17 entry, in which case you will need to change "name=e17" to "name=e18" in the reference tag (assuming the 18th edition still supports the cited claim).

Remember, we want the *total* number of native speakers, which is often not the first figure given by Ethnologue. Sometimes the data is too incompatible to add together (e.g. a figure from the 1950s for one country, and a figure from 2006 for another), in which case it should be presented that way. That's one use for the "speakers2" field. If you're not sure, just ask, or skip that article.

Data should not be displayed with more than two, or at most three, significant figures. Sometimes it should be rounded off to just one significant figure, e.g. when some of the component data used by Ethnologue has been approximated with one figure (200,000, 3 million, etc.) and the other data has greater precision. For example, a figure of 200,000 for one country and 4,230 for another is really just 200,000 in total, as the 4,230 is within the margin of rounding off in the 200,000. If you want to retain the spurious precision of the number in Ethnologue, you might want to use the {{sigfig}} template. (First parameter in this template is for the data, second is for the number of figures to round it off to.)

Dates will often need to be a range of all the country data in the Ethnologue article. When entering the date range, I often ignore dates from countries that have only a few percent of the population, as often 10% or so of the population isn't even separately listed by Ethnologue and so is undated anyway.

If Ethnologue does not provide a date for the bulk of the population, just enter "no date" in the date field. But if the population figure is undated, and hasn't changed between the 17th & 18th editions of Ethnologue, please leave the ref field set to "e17", and maybe add a comment to keep it so that other editors don't change it. In cases like this, the edition of Ethnologue that the data first appeared in may be our only indication of how old it is. We still cite the 14th edition in a couple dozen articles, so our readers can see that the data is getting old.

The articles in the categories linked above are over 90% of the job. There are probably also articles that do not currently cite Ethnologue, but which we might want to update with the 18th edition. I'll need to generate another category to capture those, probably after most of the Ethnologue 17 citations are taken care of.

Jump in at the WP:LANG talk page if you have any comments or concerns. Thanks for any help you can give!

Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)

Seasons Greetings,

This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.

Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.

While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.

Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.

This particular request is being made to you since your user name is listed in Wikipedia:Translators available list.

Thanking you with warm regards Mahitgar (talk) 05:27, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Pronunciation of Karel Čapek

Do you have a source for the accents being on the first syllables? The ogg file clearly places them on the last, as do the sound files here: http://forvo.com/word/karel_%C4%8Dapek/, all from Czech speakers.  --Lambiam 23:43, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

All those sound files clearly place the accent on the first syllable. Do note that unstressed vowels are not reduced in tone in Czech as they are in English. See Czech phonology#Stress. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 21:47, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Help please

A friend has asked me to help him and I am hoping you can help us me in this. Someone, who my friend thinks is an internet troll pretending to be Czech, has sent him a message in Czech. The message appears to be profane, but the question I have been asked to determine is whether the message has been written by a native speaker or if something Google translate has been used to generate the text. I will give you the text and I would ask you to let me know with a reply your opinion. If it is grammatically incorrect, please tell me why and even if it is grammatically correct are there other clues in the text that might indicate that it is not from a native speaker.

Here is the text "Nebudu opakovat neco co uz jsem napsal ty idiote! Nejsem tady proto, abych tady bavil nejakeho curaka!"

Please reply in English here. And then, you can delete the text (I do not want profanity on Wikipedia) I have bookmarked this page and can collect your reply in that way.

The related web page is this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbEZNhFY9TA and the comment is from "Jan Schlosser"

Sorry to disturb your day but you did invite help requests at the top of your talk page ;)

Best regards --HuntersMoon22 (talk) 09:45, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

It means "I won't repeat something I've already written, you idiot! I'm not here to deal with wankers!" It's missing a load of diacritics, otherwise grammatically coherent. Probably a native speaker. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 21:49, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Filelakeshoe. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Filelakeshoe.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia: Deleting links and the page - italki.com

Hi there. I'm pretty new to Wikipedia and its editing. I was wondering why italki is being removed from wikipedia. It's surprising given that it is not a small website, and that it is growing. (Sorry, I can't provide a link as the page has been deleted. Not sure how to show the references to the deleted page.)

--Kshanghai (talk) 02:43, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi, please see the deletion discussion. Consensus was that the article was overly promotional in tone and notability of the website was not established. If you would like to work on it I can restore a copy of the deleted article to your user space. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 07:41, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
  • @Filelakeshoe: Thanks for the letting me know. I'd like to work on a copy of the deleted article, and to bring it up to Wikipedia's standards for neutrality and for citations. I think the service is well-known enough that it is worthy of mention in Wikipedia. Please restore the article to my space, and I'll let you know when it's ready. Many thanks. Kshanghai (talk) 04:13, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
@Kshanghai: I've restored it to User:Kshanghai/Italki. Once you're done the place to go is WP:DRV, but feel free to ping me and I'll share any feedback I have on the new version. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 09:38, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
@Filelakeshoe: Thanks again for all of your help. Still getting to know how to communicate and navigate Wikipedia. I've tried to make a short and concise version of the page that meets Wikipedia's standards for neutrality and for citations. Would you mind taking a look at it? I'd really appreciate it. I don't want to submit and waste people's time, if you think it still has problems. User:Kshanghai/Italki Thanks -- Kshanghai (talk) 04:58, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
@Kshanghai: OK, I made the lead a bit more NPOV by using "allows" rather than "helps" (people find language teachers...) and removed the categories, which should only be used on pages in article space. I think a few of the references like the one from "LifeHacker" might not be considered WP:RS, and the overall coverage might not be enough to satisfy WP:GNG - despite there being many references, the encyclopedic content we can extract from them is fairly thin and thus the article is not very long. But please go ahead and nominate it at DRV. – filelakeshoe )³ 08:48, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
@Filelakeshoe: Thanks again for your help. I have this bad feeling I'm doing this wrong... I've made a page for Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/italki and put a reference on the Articles deletion log for 26 September. I'm not sure if that's the right procedure. I honestly did read the pages on deletion review... but I'm not sure if I still kicked it off correctly. I appreciate your help with NPOV on the content. Thanks again Kshanghai (talk) 07:41, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
@Kshanghai: I removed it from AfD as that's the forum to nominate articles to be deleted, but you also posted it at WP:DRV which is the right place. So keep an eye on that page. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 08:04, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
@Filelakeshoe: Hi Filelakeshoe, sorry to ask for your help again. I'm really not sure what the next step is at this point. There were positive comments from you and another editor about bringing the page back. As you know, I do believe the page is really justified. However, I don't know what the next steps are from a Wikipedia editing and review process. Sorry to ask you about this. I'm not sure if it has been decided that it should be deleted, or if it is still in contention, or if it is waiting on a more senior editor to execute and bring back. Thanks again for your help and patience. Kshanghai (talk) 04:15, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Hi, @Kshanghai: I agree the closure was a bit confusing. I have moved it back to mainspace, I don't see why not, to be honest. The closer said anyone with a problem with it could take it to AfD again. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 07:14, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

User you blocked is back using an IP address

Filelakeshoe, back at 17:03, 26 September 2017 (UTC) you indefinitely blocked User:PlanetProductions123 for having a vandalism-only account; the user was adding false scores to various Strictly Come Dancing series articles and ignoring warnings and requests to stop.

The user is back as IP 82.13.161.118, making the same false score edits (adding a fifth score for a show that has four judges scores for each dance). Indeed, if you check back on 22 September, you'll see that 82.13.161.118 added the first set of false scores for the first week of Strictly Come Dancing (series 10) at 15:27, and PlanetProductions123 continued on with the rest of the weeks starting at 15:30, a mere three minutes later.

Furthermore, PlanetProductions123 had a single non-Strictly edit, back on 24 June 2017, to the 2014–15 Premier League article, where the account reversed a bunch of scores and was swiftly reverted. 82.13.161.118 was given two warnings in late March 2017 for vandalizing that same article. It seems clear that they're the same person doing the same kind of vandalizing edits; if you could please block the IP address, it would really help. Thank you very much. BlueMoonset (talk) 07:52, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, I have blocked the IP. Please file an WP:SPI if you see any more action. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 08:02, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi Atsme, I think it's been sorted now. Sounds like there is a bug in Wikipedia:Page Curation. I would recommend using Twinkle, it always works for me. OK, what's the request? – filelakeshoe (t / c) 21:04, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
@Filelakeshoe: Not sure if an editor does not understand an idea (may be a communications problem), or just doesn't want to understand since the editor doesn't want to have wasted their effort.
Roughly, the idea, countries have sharp borders, while cultural civilizations do not.
Topic involves the concept of the word "world", which can span from an individual's conscious concept of their "world" to as broad as totality of all that can be known or thought of by anyone, in definition. In this case, "world" used in the vague phrase "Western world". Do you want to take up the issue? If so, I will explain the situation more.
Also, I sent you a "reply to" previously, to Talk:Western world. Did you get that? Regardless, if you did or didn't, I will explain more, if you are still interested. X1\ (talk) 23:34, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
Note: "Talk:Western world" updated to clarify ever changing editor's "map'. X1\ (talk) 23:52, 28 December 2017 (UTC)
I've read that discussion and can't see any evidence of it being a language barrier issue or a request for translation. It looks like a run of the mill content dispute, about a matter which I'm by no means an expert, sorry. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 14:13, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

Skvorec castle

Dear colleague,

I would apreciate if you can help with English definition "chateau". The problem is that local editor iaroslavvs changed name of Skvorec castle to Skvorec chateau. My opinion and explanation and native english historian about that is not accepted by the editor. Can you give your independent point of view? our opinion below: Zamek, Hrad, Castle or Chateau: In English a 'zamek' can mean 'Castle' or 'Country House'. A 'Country House' is a mansion or palace in the countryside, with a park. In each case they are lived-in places - homes. All 'hrady' are castles, ie fortified residences, usually dating from the Middle Ages - although there are quite a few fakes made in the 1820s-40s, when the Romantic Movement was at its height, via the novels of Sir Walter Scott. 'Chateau' is a French word usually covering Country Houses or zamky. The French word for castle - ie a fortified medieval stronghold - is 'Chateau Fort'. However, Chateau is now being used incorrectly. Skvorec isn't a chateau - better to use the word castle. 'Chateau Skvorec is totally wrong. Smaller castles or country houses are Manor Houses (French: manoire) - but Skvorec, in its high days, wasn't small.... so it is a real castle or hrad.

Dmitryeremeev (talk) 20:22, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
In a case like this I would recommend looking at what English-language sources are calling it, a castle or chateau (excluding the recent attempts to rebrand it as Savoia Castle.) Unfortunately I can only find Czech ones on google books. I'm not a historian so I can't really assess the finer points. I agree with you though that the difference between hrad x zámek in Czech doesn't quite line up with castle x chateau in English so would not assume it is a chateau just because it's called a zámek in Czech. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 21:16, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

Anomalocaris, are you tracking these PUA sigs too?   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  12:45, 17 March 2018 (UTC)

Not sure I understand, sorry. What's the character? – filelakeshoe (t / c) 15:35, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
The cat...! I copy+pasta'd it from the edit window, where it wasn't recognized either. Perhaps there's an acceptable Unicode cat character? (I haven't checked)   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  15:44, 17 March 2018 (UTC)

My apologies to your vigilant companion.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  18:01, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
Tom.Reding: I am not tracking PUA sigs. I have been asking editors to make their signatures HTML5-compliant and to remove images from their signatures. After consensus is achieved in at WT:Signatures#Signature size guidelines, I will also ask editors to remove noncompliant font size markup. I don't plan to look for PUA characters. —Anomalocaris (talk) 08:32, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

Czech to English translation request

Hello, my Czech is not very good, and I was hoping for help with a translation. The boldfaced text is the sentence that I'd like translated; the rest is for context in case it's helpful to you. This is for Escape of Viktor Pestek and Siegfried Lederer from Auschwitz, which I'm preparing for an A-class nomination.

Znát je jedna věc, pochopit věc druha. Nikdo nebyl s to si uvědomit realitu, dokud ji nestanul tváři v tvar po příjezdu do Osvětimi. A dokonce i ti největší pesimisté věřili, že alespoň mladí a zdraví mohou přežit. A teprve, když terezínský hasič, jenž hovořil s Ledererem, přijel do Birkenau a zažil selekci, pochopil co to znamená.

Thank you! Catrìona (talk) 18:26, 13 September 2018 (UTC)

@Catrìona: The bit in bold means "no one was capable of understanding the reality of the situation unless they were facing it in person after arriving at Auschwitz". The "nikdo nebyl s to" was confusing me but I checked with a native speaker and apparently it's an old-fashioned idiom meaning "nikdo nebyl schopen". Learned something new, cheers! – filelakeshoe (t / c) 11:55, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Request for translation

Hi, may I ask you to translate the article about Jakub Tenčl?--DanDvo (talk) 12:50, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for that. When I did my carbon dating on the article, it came back "Could not estimate creation date!", so I thought it was better to be safe and let someone else take a look at it, rather than simply leave it.Onel5969 TT me 21:47, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

No worries, better safe than sorry. Some of these mirror sites really do take the mick: removing citations and templates, not attributing where they grab content from and then putting a copyright notice at the bottom of the page! – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 21:53, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

Vandal is back

Hey, thanks for blocking User:86.45.176.208 the other week. Unfortunately, they're back! Any chance of a (much) longer block this time? – PeeJay 23:04, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

Done. Someone apparently really doesn't want Man U to open the season against Chelsea. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 23:11, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

Sources needed for Days of the Year pages

You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages are no longer exempt from WP:V and direct sources are required for additions. For details see the content guideline, the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide or the edit notice on any DOY page. Please do not add new additions to these pages without direct sources as the burden to provide them is on the editor who adds or restores material to these pages. Thank you. AfD/Clay Rose & AfD/The Widows's Bane notability

Curious what GNG were not met by this artist and band. From what I can tell, they meet WP:MUSIC

Additionally, I see the articles were marked WP:REFUND, however, it appears to be fully removed. Is there a method to retrieve the source code for future revisions?

Sorry for my ignorance and thank you for your assistance and time. - Tech23420 (talk) 19:59, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi @Tech23420: I closed those AfDs as soft delete because there was no participation in 7 days. If you want the articles restored or userfied, you need only ask at WP:REFUND (requests for undeletion), or just let me know and I will restore them for you. If they are taken to AfD again, the AfDs will have to run until a consensus is reached (i.e. soft delete will not be an option). – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 20:11, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
Thank you @Filelakeshoe: for the clarification. Can you please restore the pages? I will ensure I stay more active, to participate in the discussion, this time. - Tech23420 (talk) 20:30, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
@Tech23420: both pages are restored. If you manage to improve the articles and add more sources we might avoid further AfDs. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 20:38, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

St. Catherine/St. Voršily

And while we are at figuring stuff out, can you look at my query here: Talk:St. Catherine Monastery, Olomouc#St. Voršily Monastery? I did not put the name of the monastery in Wiedermannová-Motyčková's article, because it seemed very unclear to me whether the name we have is correct. Thanks! ITN recognition for Karel Gott

On 2 October 2019, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article Karel Gott, which you nominated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page.

Thank you!

Truly appreciate your help and follow through on Zdeňka Wiedermannová-Motyčková. I was checking mail in the airport when I saw the post and had minutes to alert you before I boarded a plane. Finally back home and happily see that you took care of the whole non-problem problem. Thanks! SusunW (talk) 00:07, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

A survey to improve the community consultation outreach process

Hello!

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking to improve the community consultation outreach process for Foundation policies, and we are interested in why you didn't participate in a recent consultation that followed a community discussion you’ve been part of.

Please fill out this short survey to help us improve our community consultation process for the future. It should only take about three minutes.

The privacy policy for this survey is here. This survey is a one-off request from us related to this unique topic.

Thank you for your participation, Kbrown (WMF) 10:44, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

Kbrown (WMF) usually it's better to send people automated messages telling them that community consultations are happening rather than asking them post factum why they didn't participate. – filelakeshoe (t / c) 🐱 11:00, 13 November 2019 (UTC)
