Hey man, how's it going? Did you get your book finished? Just saw another Homicide article listed at GAN and I noticed that most of the sources used don't have URLs associated with them, so I presume they're not online. WikiCup 2011 January newsletter
We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to 
The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by 
Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to 
Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, 
Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and 
Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!
A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Thanks for the compliment on the Parks and Rec article, Hunter. I even mentioned you in the comment, going, "Where is the usual awesome editor??" But you came through soon after. Your edits were fantastic and I don't mind them at all. I actually entered like 95% of the quotes on the wikiquote article for this show if you want to check 'em out (limiting two per 1/2 hour episode is a tough rule to follow). March 2011 GAN backlog elimination drive a week away
WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of March. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 50. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. WikiCup 2011 February newsletter
So begins round two of the WikiCup! We now have eight pools, each with eight random contestants. This round will continue until the end of April, when the top two of each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers of those remaining, will make it to round three. Congratulations to The Bushranger (submissions) (first, with 487 points) and Hurricanehink (submissions) (second, with 459), who stormed the first round. 
Casliber (submissions) finished third with 223. Twelve others finished with over 100 points- well done to all of you! The final standings in round one can be seen here. A mere 8 points were required to reach round two; competition will no doubt be much more fierce this round, so be ready for a challenge! A special thanks goes, again, to Jarry1250 (submissions) for dealing with all bot work. This year's bot, as well as running smoothly, is doing some very helpful things that last year's did not. Also, thanks to 
Stone (submissions) for some helpful behind-the-scenes updating and number crunching.
Some news for those who are interested- March will see a GAN backlog elimination drive, which you are still free to join. Organised by WikiProject Good articles, the drive aims to minimise the GAN backlog and offers prizes to those who help out. Of course, you may well be able to claim WikiCup points for the articles you review as part of the drive. Also ongoing is the Great Backlog Drive, looking to work on clearing all of the backlogs on Wikipedia; again, incentives are offered, and the spirit of friendly competition is alive, while helping the encyclopedia is the ultimate aim. Though unrelated to the WikiCup, these may well be of interest to some of you.
Just a reminder of the rules; if you have done significant work on content this year and it is promoted in this round, you may claim for it. Also, anything that was promoted after the end of round one but before the beginning of round two may be claimed for in round two. Details of the rules can be found on this page. For those interested in statistics, a running total of claims can be seen here, and a very interesting table of that information (along with the highest scorers in each category) can be seen here. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. - A quick-fail is when a reviewer fails an article for one of the listed reasons without extensive review. I gave a complete review of the article. Wikipedia good article guidelines state:
- Read the whole article, and decide whether it should pass or fail based on the criteria listed here. You can also put the article "on hold" or ask for a second opinion. If you wish, you can inform the nominator of your actions.
- I chose to fail the article based on the amount of work that I precieved was needed and the need for added input from other editors to help. Basic guidelines of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/GAN backlog state: if the article is not of Good Article quality yet, don't be afraid to fail. I am an editor that will fail a nomination if I believe the work will take more than the time of a hold or there may be difficulties in the editor or editors understanding of MoS. I do indeed have the right to list "The Incredible Melting Man" as one of my reviews. I also do understand that it is your right to submit to Wikipedia:Good article reassessment. I do however, believe you misinterpretation of a "Quick fail" is illustrative of you misunderstanding of guidelines. No offense. I can always add more detail and or examples if you truely do not see what wikilinks should be added. While I did not speak to specifics on that I did believe the guidance was enough. Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give a page a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.
In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. - Well I know the assumption is to cite 'refutable' or 'controversial' material, but in the lead you mention opinions on the series, and although you make citations for those later in the article, just citing those same sources in the lead as well would avoid having it look weasel-wordy or un-sourced. Just reference the same sources you use further in the article in the lead as well and it'll be pretty much perfect. GRAPPLE X 02:51, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
