Co-op Pilot Results & Mentoring

Hey there! The Co-op has been on a hiatus for a bit, but we are planning on opening up shop again soon. When you're able, please read over and respond to this update on our talk page. We have favorable results from our final report regarding the pilot, and we are interested in seeing who is available to mentor when we reopen our space and begin to send out invites again. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 23:16, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello Sir.

User:Jim Carter Wrong Figures on PAF 1971 War Violation of Wikipedia policies @ WP:FAKE As per as the Indo-Pak War of 1971 Air War Section Neutral Claims is mentioned with Neutral Source. 54 IAF aircraft were lost (perhaps as many as 27 of them in air combat). Pakistan lost 72 aircraft (51 of them combat types, but admitting only 25 to enemy action). Of the Pakistani losses, at least 24 fell in air combat (although only 10 air combat losses were admitted, not including any F-6s, Mirage IIIs, or the six Jordanian F-104s which failed to return to their donors). But the imbalance in air losses was explained by the IAF's considerably higher sortie rate, and its emphasis on ground-attack missions. On the ground Pakistan suffered most, with 8,000 killed and 25,000 wounded while India lost 3,000 dead and 12,000 wounded. The loss of armoured vehicles was similarly imbalanced. This represented a major defeat for Pakistan. [1] as per as Indo-Pak War of 1971 this same would be written in the Pakistan Air Force

I have even writed the same in the Talk:Pakistan Air Force but no one has replied even after 2 days. Sir I will request you to correct the figures of 1971 Air War on Pakistan Air Force as per as Indo-Pak War of 1971 ,

here in Pakistan Air Force, @1971 it is only written about the PAF loses on Eastern front, while IAF loses were of the total Aircraft lost in both eastern&western fronts is mentioned. Hence i will request you to correct the figures of 1971 Air War on Pakistan Air Force as per as Indo-Pak War of 1971 MCIWS (talk) 14:28, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

The above user is pov pushing that edit I reverted you on was pure pov secondly its got zero consensus and thirdly hes a sock user. Zadon19 (talk) 15:16, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

My opinion is that this section [22] should be hatted because it was creating knowing the proposals could not be implemented, is just soapboxing about amnesty, and violates WP:POINT. Obviously, you should consult with others or simply make up your own mind, but I wanted to bring it to your attention as that case is already long enough. Dennis Brown - 11:05, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi Jim, yesterday I tried to make an edit on the "Synthetic diamonds" page and it was declined, please check : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_diamond . Could you please let me know the reason and explain how I could re-submit my edit?

Cactusfigure (talk) 07:12, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Hello Cactusfigure! I saw your edit. The source you've used to support the information is not not reliable. You've to find reliable third party sources for the information you've added. Furthermore, the information you've added doesn't belongs to the lead of that article, it should be added with proper source in the appropriate section of the article. The introduction of an article should only contain necessary information about the subject in brief. Hope this helps! Jim Carter 11:16, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Scotland Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Philadelphia Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4. Somerset Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5. Washington, D.C. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6. Somerset Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7. United States Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8. England Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

Infrastructure scholarship from Wikimedia India

Dear talk page watchers and friends, I'm inclined to apply for a scholarship from Wikimedia Foundations' chapter, Wikimedia India, to get a grant for a Laptop. My talk page watcher might have noticed that lately my activity on Wikipedia has declined to almost 4-5 edits a month. I've gone through major hardships and financial struggles for the last 4ish months, which is one of the significant reason for my decreased activity on Wikipedia. Few intimate friends on Wikipedia might be aware of some of the problems I faced in the last few months. My mother was suffering from cancer until she passed away on 11 July this year. I had used most of the funds I saved, for her treatment, even selled off few most desired things of mine to gather funds, including the device (Laptop) which I used to access Wikipedia. After her death, I found myself in heavy financial debt when on 20 August, I lost another member (future family member perhaps) of my family. Both the blows were enough to give me a brain fever. Now, I'm left with enough time and energy for Wikipedia, but no money to buy another device, as one can understand that I'm under the grasp of heavy finiancial crisis. After considering all the ways, I'm thinking of requesting a scholarship to buy a Laptop, so that I can get back to my normal editing pattern and help Wikipedia in umpteen ways, from ArbCom related works to normal content writing; Another benefit is: I'm involved in offwiki Wikipedia related workshops as well, recently I've attended meta:MWTTT, so a Laptop will be of great help in future workshops. Anyhow, I'm writing all this here because before applying for scholarship, here, I need endorsement from my local community members to see if the local community thinks that I deserve the grant. Therefore, friends and talk page watchers, if you feel that I deserve the grant then please sign up below just to assure Wikimedia Indias' member that the grant (if they provide) will be helpful for the project. I'll not make the thread any larger by adding more details, its already large. But I wish to point out that this statement took me an hour to type, this edit is made from a mobile device and one could understand how much it troubles to edit Wikipedia from phone, Small screen vs fatty fingers. :-p Thanks! Jim Carter 16:19, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Truetraffik.in

You are probably right that {{db-corp}} should be used at Truetraffik.in but I removed your duplicate notification at User talk:Chakkalokesh before I saw the details. I guess that's ok—two speedies for the same article seemed excessive. I suppose I should find an article that Traffic generation tools (same author, and same promotional purpose) could redirect to, unless you think a speedy is warranted there. No need to reply or spend any more time on this. Johnuniq (talk) 10:54, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the message, Johnuniq, it appears Truetraffik.in is already gone. However, Traffic generation tools appears to be a case of borderline A11. I'll go ahead and tag it with prod as it doesn't appear blatantly promotional article. Cheers, Jim Carter 11:29, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

A page you started (Sinocorophium hangangense) has been reviewed!

Thanks for creating Sinocorophium hangangense, Jim Carter!

Wikipedia editor Animalparty just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

Keep in mind WP:MTAU and WP:NOTJOURNAL- Wiki articles should not contain needless jargon, and should be written for the general reader, not specialists. Also be wary of leaving {{in use}} on for too long- it may hinder improvement.

@Animalparty: Thanks for reviewing that article! Just an advise, I agree that there are certainly things that could be improved in the article, however, Wikipedia has no deadline. By placing the "in use" tag I made it aware that I'm still improving it, so it is reasonable that there maybe some flaws that are yet to be fixed. The last edit I made to that article was 93 minutes ago before you patrolled it, I really think you should have waited for me to remove that tag before you jump and place some unnecessary suggestions on my talk page. I'm a regular here, FWIW. From now I suggest you not to patrol articles which are tagged with "in use', unless the article is stale for several hours (more than 3hours is good). Though I know your suggestions were in good faith but few regulars may consider it irritating, not including me. Best, Jim Carter 18:52, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm sorry if you found my suggestions unnecessary or bothersome. Perhaps I should have waited longer. The limited space in the Page patrol comment field necessitates brevity which may be received as curtness, which was unintended. I realize there is no deadline, but almost every article is in some stage of development, and open collaboration can more rapidly improve the encyclopedia. Given the specialized source material for this species, it can be a challenge to make information accurate yet accessible (I'm also a regular, and specialize in organisms for which there is little or no popular literature). I look forward to your improvements. Cheers, --Animalparty! (talk) 19:20, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
Don't be sorry, Animalparty, it's okay.  :) As I said, your suggestions were in good faith and good faithed editors are what we need more. Yeah, absolutely, I totally agree with you that open collaborations more rapidly improve the encyclopedia and I would really love to take your help in making the article more reader friendly, now that I realized you are a specialist in the subject. What I was trying to do after starting the article was to shape it before removing the in use tag. You see, how time consuming it is to understand the subject, writing about it and then make it sound less technical. Anyhow, I will be removing the tag now and would be glad if you could help me. Thanks! Jim Carter 19:45, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Autopatrolled

Hi Jim Carter, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the patroller right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing!  · Salvidrim! ·  18:50, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

  • I'm making you autopatrolled for the same reason I made Liz before she passed RfA -- the numerous pages created as part of your ArbClerk work should not be flagged as "in need of patrolling". Perhaps this should be codified somewhere for you guys, that non-admin ArbClerks should be autopatrolled as a matter or convenience, but I'll let you figure this out amongst yourselves while I continue personally autopatrolling any non-admin ArbClerk I happen upon. ;)  · Salvidrim! ·  18:50, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
Great suggestion, Salvidrim!. I'll make the suggestion on the clerks list.
I know when we were first dealing with the sprawling Arbitration Enforcement case, the clerks were given the ability to mass message because so many editors had offered statements and we had to notify them all. Liz Read! Talk! 18:53, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
Great suggestion indeed, Salvidrim!! However Liz maybe already aware that in many cases an arbcom trainee lost interest and resigned only months after joining the team. So my suggestion is that we give the autopatrolled flag only to the full clerks. FWIW, I'm still a trainee. Cheers! Jim Carter 19:11, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
The flag is cheap to add and cheap to remove -- and I've long held the belief that such userrights should be granted more leniently... as long as someone is trusted just enough not to create CSD'able articles, autopatrol can serve a purpose.  · Salvidrim! ·  19:39, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
Just to note: Jim Carter is eligible for the autopatrolled flag in any case. He has created 29 mainspace articles, and the suggested requirement is now 25. So, thanks, Salvidrim! --MelanieN (talk) 19:55, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

CVU Academy: Training request

Hello there Jim Carter, I am TheCaliforniaKansan. I created this account over three years ago, and completely forgot the utility of Wikipedia. I became pretty active recently, and I soon discovered the inconvenient truth that lots of people like to vandalize Wikipedia... I work in the public sector, and it just makes me cringe when users attempt to defame living persons, post inaccurate information, or remove beneficial content. I would like to be trained by you, if you still have an opening. I recently checked out the CVU Academy page, and saw that there is training available to handle vandalism. Recently, I've only been doing so manually. I've also noticed that those who use STiki and Twinkle seem to combat vandalism in a more swift fashion. I have examined the other trainers, and frankly you seem to be the most qualified. The others who are accepting students are not as active as I would hope, and/or do not use both Twinkle and STiki. It would be an honor to be trained by you, please let me know if you are available. Truthfully, I would like to be able to improve Wikipedia in some other manner other than manually removing vandalism... Thank you for your consideration.
Best,
TheCaliforniaKansan (talk) 19:40, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi TheCaliforniaKansan! Thanks for the kind words! Yes, I've no problem to take you as a trainee. Please take a look at this page and let me know if you feel comfortable with the methods I use to teach trainees. If it suits you, let me know here, at my talk page, and I will be creating your academy page. Note: The last two trainees I adopted, didn't completed the course. This course is a bit time consuming, it may take at least 2 weeks to complete this course. So after considering all points, if you still wish to join the academy, do let me know, I would be glad to help you. :) Jim Carter 20:15, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
@Jim Carter:, I am sorry to hear that they did not complete the course. I am more than committed to completing the course and ultimately improving Wikipedia. I enjoy updating pages and preventing disruptive edits, and I highly doubt that I'll go down the same path as my predecessors. In short, I am committed and ready to begin training.
TheCaliforniaKansan (talk) 20:29, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
@TheCaliforniaKansan: Hi, thanks for understanding the problem. I have created your academy page here and left there some simple tasks for you. Please keep the page on your watchlist so that you don't miss new task additions. Don't feel reluctant to ask me questions here. All the best, Jim Carter 15:37, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
P. S. You don't need to ping me when you message me on my talk page i.e. here. Every user gets a notification if their talk page is altered by any user (except few bots). Cheers! Jim Carter 15:44, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Support request with team editing experiment project

Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future! (which I hope it will be very bright, with colors, and Wikipedia everywhere) Regards from User:Micru on meta.

Opinion poll

I feel that this is inappropriate. He puts himself out there. You respond with hints. Please take it seriously and be straightforward. The poll is a new thing. Please do not be disruptive. I have a long, long history of issues with you. This includes the horrible experience you gave me with the proposal in the first place when you mass messaged 1500 admins. Then you challenged the poll at its talk page when it started. You also have a history of inappropriate joking and remarks at actual RfAs. I strongly suggest considering the consequences of your posts and how they can affect things and make people feel. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:51, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

Calm down, Anna Frodesiak, you don't have to be so defensive. I've retracted the thing which bothered you, but I'm still unsure why you thought it's disruptive. It is just a indication to the candidate, to let them know, why I have given them 6 out of 10; See WP:NOTBUREAUCRACY. Anyhow, you mean I've challenged the project by this and this? I'm unsure again, I just asked few normal questions. Then again, the mass-message thingy, you are aware that it was a good faith mistake long time ago. You say I have a history of inappropriate comments at RfA, please see WP:ASPERSION, as far I can remember, something such happened once about an year ago, in good faith. Anna, I really think you are biased when you comment anything related to me. Best wishes, Jim Carter 14:24, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

EotW nominations

Hey, Jim. Hope all is well. Can you do me and WER a great favor and keep your eyes peeled for potential "Editors of the Week". Some of your previous candidates have achieved great things here at WP. I just want to be sure we don't run out of accepted candidates in a few weeks...which could happen. I invite any of your friendly stalkers to do the same. Thanks. Buster Seven Talk 16:16, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, Jim. I appreciate you. Buster Seven Talk 16:58, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
Will look out for more, thanks Buster7, for the note and appreciation! Jim Carter 17:00, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

...thinkin' out loud...

With what we have we should make it to the end of the year. That's Good. I was thinking of doing some kind of mass mailing or Holiday Greeting barnstar-like thing, around Christmas Time or New Years, to all the WER editors that have signed up (150 or so) over the past 3 years...wishing them and their families well etc...and mentioning EotW's constant need of nominations, of course. Is that something you can help me with, in about one month or so??? Buster Seven Talk 21:24, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

@Buster7: Just tell me what will be the content of the message, when exactly you wish me to send the message and I will do it on WER's behalf. The list is already here so no problem. This is indeed an excellent idea! Best, Jim Carter 08:00, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Draft:CHI St. Luke's Health

I noticed with interest your speedy on the Draft:CHI St. Luke's Health. I have been keeping an eye on this for severral days having been involved in the deletion process of the previous (near identical) version. I was wondering about starting an SPI but was worried about the ethics of calling out an editor who has only (apparently) edited a draft article. The previous article was deleted, if I recall correctly, on Copy-vio grounds but claims to notability looked paper thin and unsustainable. I will continue to watch with interest. Regards  Velella  Velella Talk   21:51, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

@Velella: I randomly came to that page while patrolling recent changes. I'm not very aware of the background, it seems like that Draft was previously deleted on copy-vio grounds only. I don't know who had created that previous version of the page, I can't see deleted contributions, but I think you should keep a watch on their activity (Since you are aware about the background) and if you see same kind of disruption, we can think about SPI. Cheers! Jim Carter 11:45, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to United States Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

Hey Jim. I hope you don't mind but I cut-n-pasted this thread and moved it to my sandbox to study. I have downloadedthe current version. What's next? Buster Seven Talk 14:11, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
Nice to see that you want to use Stiki. Well, before I can say anything, I have to know which operating system you use. If you use Windows, you just have to unzip the .zip file and you will find something like STiki_2015_07_02.jar Double click it and Stiki should open. You just have to login from the jar application and recent changes will automatically get's loaded there. There are four options for every edit- "vandalism", "good faith", "pass" and "innocent". I hope you understand what those options mean, try to make some edits and if you face any problem, I'm here. If you use Unix, you just have to paste the following command in the terminal: "java -jar STiki_exec_[date].jar". Note that if you use Windows but don't have java installed; you should install java first since Stiki will not work with out Java. You can download it from here. Hope it helps! Jim Carter 15:23, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
Jim. I use Windows 7. How do I "un-zip the file"? I am basically illiterate when it comes to tech stuff. I remember now that months ago Coretheapple tried to help set me up and I just gave up in frustration. I see the Stiki file in my Downloads but thats about it. Buster Seven Talk 17:36, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
@Buster7: Simply just right click on the zip file. You will see a option like, "Extract here", click it. Now you will find that the "STiki_2015_07_02.jar" file is present in your "download" folder. Cut-and-paste it to some other folder, double click on that "STiki_2015_07_02.jar" file. It should start, if it won't, then probably you don't have java installed. Download and install java from the above link I mentioned. And there you go, you will be able to use it. Let me know you need help. Jim Carter 07:44, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

A. J. Ayer revision - here is why

You didn't do anything wrong. I just wanted to explain the "unexplained edits." After I added an external link to an interview by the BBC Radio 4 Desert Island Discs, I realized that it was already there. I went back and removed my own unnecessary addition. No other Wikiperson I've added it to has had already had a link to their own interviews. Ziva11 (talk) 05:44, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

reversion, Taylor article

Hi, Jim. Ragityman, here.

Thank you for recognizing that they are good faith edits. I re-edited some of the material, thinking I had goofed. I didn't notice that you had reverted me until I looked at the history. They ARE good faith edits. I'm just trying to help. Please read what I wrote on the talk page of each article to understand my objectives. If, after you read what I wrote, you STILL feel that it needs to be reverted, have at it. I won't interfere.

Look through the history as well, though. The information about his first wife, her singing career, and her parents, were there THREE TIMES. I only deleted two of them. I WILL go back and add the ref link, if you haven't already fixed it.

If you intend to create articles for all the red links, that is MUCH preferred to just unlinking. I'm all for that. I checked, though, and those links were created in July 2014. That's pretty old. I'd suggest you leave them unlinked until you at least have a stub. Otherwise, some other gnome will come through, and unlink them.

I can see that you have put a lot of time and energy into this article. I don't do edit-wars. There's plenty of work to go around, without us undoing each other's work, and I won't waste my time. Just read what I wrote, and if you don't agree, revert any or all of what I have done. But I have to tell you. I know, NOBODY likes unsolicited advice. But, if you are really going to get any satisfaction out of your work here on this project, you have to let it go. The terms of use, and the fine print on every single edit page will tell you that you cannot own your work on Wikipedia — not in the way you can on a blog or a magazine. When you create an article HERE, you are agreeing to let everyone who wants to help, help. It will ALWAYS be your creation, and the history shows that you created it. It also shows up in your stats. But in many ways Wikipedia is unique: this is a crowd-sourced project. Once it goes live, it's fair game. If you can't live with that, there are lots of other venues. But if you give it a chance, and put a little time into understanding WP conventions and customs, you can one day see some of YOUR creations become featured articles, DYK, or any number of other nice things.

By the way, I'm sorry that you're having health problems. Ain't none of us gonna get out of this world alive, but I don't like it for people to suffer, especially if they are helping to build Wikipedia. Hang in there. Rags (talk) 06:39, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

OOPS! Boy, do I look stupid, now.
I won't presume to delete anything from YOUR talk page (i've already presumed far too much), but if you woud like to delete any or all of my remarks, above, feel free. Rags (talk) 06:56, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. John Cocke

John Cocke did receive National Medal of Technology, how can I add source? — Preceding unsigned comment added by In Heels (talkcontribs) 05:19, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

Hello In Heels, thank you for your note. It did seems like John Cocke received the honor, according to this source. I've added the source in the article to support the claim. In future, you should always provide a source to support contentious materials that you add. You can see this how-to guide about adding references. Best, Jim Carter 05:32, 21 December 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, User:Miyagawa has stepped down as judge. He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (User:Figureskatingfan) and Jason (User:Sturmvogel 66) is Andrew (User:Godot13), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in Featured Pictures; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and Cwmhiraeth have chosen to limit their participation. See here for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Edits to Horace Pippin

Jim,

I was contacted at OTRS by editor Calvin Kelso, who recently tried to improve Horace Pippin. I see that you sent a welcome message to the editor, but the edits were reverted with the brief comment "problematic edits".

While I have some guesses as to the issues, I hope you will agree that the edit summary doesn't provide a lot of guidance. The editor has actually done a fair amount of research about the subject of the article, and I think can make some great additions to the article, with some guidance.

Could I persuade you to be more expansive regarding your concerns about the edits, so that you and I can help the editor?

(I'll leave it up to you whether this discussion should continue here, or on the talk page of the article.)--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:12, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2016: Game On!

We are about to enter the second week of the 2016 WikiCup. The most recent player to sign up brings the current total to 101 contestants. Signups close on 5 February. If you’re interested, you can join this year's WikiCup here.

We are aware that in some areas the scoring bot’s numbers are a little bit off (i.e., overly generous) and are working to have that corrected as soon as possible.--MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:04, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Hello Jim Carter,

You are receiving this notification because you signed up as a translator to Hindi and Canadian English on Meta. The page Template:StrategyButton2016/editintro/Communities is available for translation. You can translate it here:

The priority of this page is high. The deadline for translating this page is 2016-01-18.

- This is the part of a series of community consultation pages. The WMF Community Advocacy team has put together a list at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2016_Strategy/Translations. We're hoping to launch the consultation on January 18th. Realizing getting all translations in place before the launch of the consultation may not be possible (and that people will likely help with translations after the launch), I'd be really grateful for any assistance especially that you can give in translating the templates at that Meta page link, like this one. It'll probably be harder for casual translators to help out with those!

- Text should be stable at this point. I've just made what I hope will be the last modification to those pages!

- Thank you for all you do, and I hope you will not only assist in translation (if you are able) but also take part in the consultation. Your input will be very welcome.

- Questions or concerns? Please let me know at mdennis@wikimedia.org. Thanks! Maggie

Speedy deletion nomination of मंदाकिनी की आवाज़

Hello Jim Carter,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged मंदाकिनी की आवाज़ for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Ueutyi (talk) 11:22, 21 January 2016 (UTC)

Geographical Indications in India Edit-a-thon starts in 24 hours

Hello,

Thanks a lot for signing up as a participant in the Geographical Indications in India Edit-a-thon. We want to inform you that this edit-a-thon will start in next 24 hours or so (25 January 0:00 UTC). Here are a few handy tips:

  • ⓵ Before starting you may check the rules of the edit-a-thon once again.
  • ⓶ A resource section has been started, you may check it here.
  • ⓷ Report the articles you are creating and expanding. If a local event page has been created on your Wikipedia you may report it there, or you may report it on the Meta Wiki event page too. This is how you should add an article— go to the "participants" section where you have added you name, and beside that add the articles like this: Example (talk) (Articles: Article1, Article2, Article3, Article4). You don't need to update both on Meta and on your Wikipedia, update at any one place you want.
  • ⓸ If you are posting about this edit-a-thon- on Facebook or Twitter, you may use the hashtag #GIIND2016
  • ⓹ Do you have any question or comment? Do you want us to clarify something? Please ask it here.

Thank you and happy editing. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:33, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

7 more days to create or expand articles

Hello, thanks a lot for participating in Geographical Indications in India Edit-a-thon. We understand that perhaps 7 days (i.e. 25 January to 31 January) were not sufficient to write on a topic like this, and/or you may need some more time to create/improve articles, so let's extend this event for a few more days. The edit-a-thon will continue till 10 February 2016 and that means you have got 7 more days to create or expand articles (or imprpove the articles you have already created or expanded).
