Sandbox

I find your actions and message here puzzling. Specifically; "Sandboxes are intended for things being worked on which might become part of the encyclopedia". This is only one use of sandboxes and to delete a new user's sandbox on this basis is heavy handed. Sandboxes are for trying things out, a very necessary process if you are to learn how to use Wikipedia.

Yes, this user made the error of starting out in article space, but to be further jumped on for trying the same in their own sandbox is not conducive in encouraging new editors. Frankly you should be able to write any nonsense you like in your sandbox, as long as it is not an obvious attempt to deceive. I didn't see anything here to suggest that. You may be right. I was in two minds what would be best to do. He was certainly not attempting to deceive, but he made clear on the article talk page that what he wanted was to use Wikipedia as a web-host for his school project, not to do anything that might contribute to the encyclopedia. Peridon had already told him "Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not an exercise book." I did consider saying "all right, just this once" but on balance I thought, and still think, better to explain clearly what WP is here for and point him to more appropriate places. The way to do that is to work on the article in a user sub-page. You already have one at User:JAESON25/Artista Rosario. I have copied into it the two sentences from the deleted article. That is where you should work on it. Read WP:Your first article and WP:MUSICBIO to see what the article will need if it is not to be deleted. I'm not sure salting would be useful yet, there are so many possible variations of the name - we have had Mike carvelo once (with one "l") and Mike carvello twice, one being moved to Mike Carvello before being deleted. I have watchlisted all three. If they come back again, it could be worth an SPI to see whether the authors Mcarvello (talk · contribs) and Markbecker101 (talk · contribs) are the same. Javiera Márquez

I saw you deleted the Javiera Márquez article I created, I understand some articles have to be deleted because of irrelevance or unclear relevance, but I believe this was not the case. The sole fact that Javiera Márquez has been the subject (or mentioned) in newspapers El Ciudadano, Cambio 21 and La Tercera (and also in La Nación [1] a reportage in The Clinic [2] which I hand't time to inclde) indicates relevance. These newspapers are all of nationwide distribution and to be found in every city's kiosk (not sure how Im going to proof this to you). Being runner-up in elections of universoty with 18,000 undergraduates is not a minor thing, least during a time of student unrest. To add additional relevance Javiera Márquez is likely Chile's most media-exposed Trotskyist. The article said only that she is a student, a member of a Trotskyist party, and fought but lost (by a convincing margin) an election for a student federation. That did not seem to me to show enough significance to pass WP:CSD#A7, but I have userfied it for you to User:Dentren/Javiera Márquez. If it is not to be deleted again, before returning it to the main space you need to expand it to say more clearly why she is more than just "a left-wing student who lost a student election" - for instance, if this student federation has some national significance, explain that. I have to say that, after reading the references, which amount to a couple of interviews before the election, I doubt whether there is notability enough to pass an AfD (see WP:BLP1E), but you are welcome to see what you can do to expand it. No, that account will not be unblocked, because we do not allow accounts whose names are names of organizations or groups. Accounts must be for individuals only, who are personally responsible for them. I see you have set up an individual account for yourself, and that's fine, but Wikipedia is not a place for you to write about yourself or your band - see Wikipedia is not about YOU and Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. Deleted Pages

Hi JohnCD, Recently two articles were deleted Until The Sun Comes Out Again and Open Sky (Discography) for the reason 'Non-notable music by artist with no Wikipedia article'. The Artist is Notable and I tried to do this with very little time, with which I didn't list the references. The band had a wikipedia article which was also removed for not sourcing. As the band has been nominated for three Covenant awards by GMA Canada I felt the pages were needed to be put up. I have userfied the band article for you to User:Shrike88/Open Sky (band). I would concentrate first on seeing whether you can establish that the band are notable enough to have an article before worrying about album or discography articles. Just being nominated for awards doesn't mean all that much: WP:Notability requires references showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject," see WP:42, and the standard for bands is explained at WP:BAND. Read WP:NALBUMS as well - even where a band are notable enough for an article, it doesn't follow that their albums are; unless there is substantial independent coverage about the album it's better covered in the band article.

Before restoring the band article to the main encyclopedia, check with user Ronhjones (talk), the admin who deleted it. JohnCD (talk) 16:09, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

This is a much more substantial article than the one I deleted in May, which just said he was a member of the Philosophy Dept and had one sentence about his work. This one is good enough to pass the low bar of WP:CSD#A7, though I am not sure it would pass WP:Notability (academics). Hey JohnCD!

I was working on this webpage, but noticed it got deleted. I now see why it was deleted, but I was hoping I could get it back in this sandbox format that you mentioned in your talk page so that I can keep working on it for now. Though the band hasn't made it big yet, they're on their way, so I was hoping that I could keep the page, and then when I have more information to add to it (possibly a record deal!) I could run it past you once again to see if it could become an actual wikipedia page.

Nomination for Speedy Deletion of MusicBlvd

Sorry you felt the notice for speedy deletion of the page MusicBlvd was invalid. I would like to just give you the quick reason I personally, believed it was fit for speedy deletion:

The article claimed and I quote MusicBlvd is partnered with Billboard.com, Musixmatch, and YouTube which you have quoted no sources for whatsoever. Just because you have accounts on Twitter, Youtube and billboard.com does not mean you are partnered. The accounts on Twitter (Has 2 followers correct as of 11:30, 31/10/2012 GMT) and Youtube (Has 2 Subscribers correct as of 11:30, 31/10/2012) which both indicate lack of notability. MusicBlvd has little indication of why it is culturally significant. I view this article to be in violation of WP:SOAP . Section 6. of that clearly states that All topics must be verifiable with independent, third party sources. This article also violates the section External links to commercial organizations are acceptable if they identify major organizations which are the topic of the article. This organisation I don't really consider, myself as a major organisation. WP:COMPANY is a guideline that highlights the various different ways an article can be notable. The article also only appears to list Pro's for this organisation therefore does not seem to demonstrate a WP:NPOV. I'd also like to point out that the article Gracenote makes no references to MusicBlvd and that the following Source appears to indicate a company by the name of Music Boulevard and not as the article indicates MusicBlvd. Overall I have quoted the problems with this article and if there is anyway in which you could improve it to a point in which could be seen to compliment the WP:POLICIES it would satisfy me personally however, this AfD debate is to gain overall consensus and I cannot speak on behalf of other people so I will look forward to what other editors have to say. --Olowe2011(talk) 12:02, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

My Page wasn't a hoax

Earlier today I posted a page regarding a theory of immortality. This theory was valid in both definition and evidence, and yet the theory was taken down almost immediately, the reason being that it was an apparent "blatant hoax". This theory is not a hoax, as hoax implies deception, which a theory by definition cannot do (theories are suppositions, not facts. A theory cannot deceive any more than the claim "I personally like cheese" can). There was no reason for this page to be taken down, and I would appreciate it if you would stop tearing down valid Wikipedia pages. Refund

Hi John, I saw that you are active at WP:REFUND. Long ago I tried to defend an article on Till Tantau at AfD here. In 2012 the article was recreated, but if I remember right, the previous version was a lot more concise, and a lot longer.

Is there still a way to assess the previously deleted version of the article? Would you mind offering an opinion as to the notability of Till Tantau? After all, if it goes to AfD again, then why bother?

I have done a history merge, so that you can now see the previous (May 2010) version in the history here. It looks much the same, actually, and I have to say that it seems to me a WP:CSD#G4 repost of deleted material speedy deletion candidate, as the new version does nothing to overcome the principal objection (lack of independent coverage) raised at the AfD. I wouldn't zap it myself, I would tag it so as to get another pair of eyes, and I'm happy for you to see if you can find sources to add, but unless they are spectacularly good it shuld probably go back to AfD. Deletion of Pizza Lucé

Earlier today, I created a new page at Pizza Lucé describing a pizzeria chain in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. However, it was deleted because there was "no indication of importance (individuals, animals, organizations, web content)." I'm really confused by this. I used the article Ray's Pizza about a pizzeria chain in New York City as an example for my article and it seems to me that that article has all of the same elements as the article I created (such as a description of their locations and their founding and development). Can you take a look please?

Hey John!

I'm just wondering if you could take a look at this conversation I'm having with user Zepppep. It's regarding this report that was made to AIV. When I've looked at the IPs contributions I found only one edit for today, the earliest one before that was in July 2011 so I've refused any block and I posted a message on Zepppep's talk page about making a bad report to AIV because there is no way that should have been reported to AIV given the length of time between the edits.

What was worrying me most though, is looking at the IP talk page, Zepppep has issued a level 3 warning for the vandalism the IP did today. However he has then issued two level 4 warnings, one for vandalism carried out in June 2011, the last one for vandalism carried out in April 2011! Wouldn't that be classed as bad faith? I'm sure it certainly breaks everything assuming good faith stands for! It's a shared IP, it's likely that it wasn't the same person that made the edits that occurred over a year ago and by issuing not one but two final warnings they may well have scared off a genuine editor.

Zepppep also seems to think that by blocking the editor for 31 hours it would encourage them to become a faithful editor. However that's not how the blocking policy or AIV work. Zepppep has been editing the encyclopedia since 2009, I would expect them to know that by now and I'm slightly concerned that they don't!

Personally I would've started the warning process off from scratch again - with a level 1 warning for vandalism. Can you please have a look and see if there's anything that should be added to my conversation with the editor? --5 albert square (talk) 02:11, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

No, you are absolutely right, I would have responded to that AIV report with Insufficient recent activity to warrant a block or User has been incorrectly or insufficiently warned. After over a year, with an IP, one should certainly restart the warning cycle, though I would have started with level 2 here, as that does not look like a good-faith edit. I have removed the quite inappropriate #4 warnings from the IP talk page - for policy on why they are inappropriate, WP:VAND: "A new warning generally should not escalate from a previous warning unless a user received the previous warning and failed to heed it." It looks from Zepppep's talk page as though s/he has got the message, and I don't think it would help for me to weigh in there now.

I'm slightly surprised to see that WP:VAND doesn't give any explicit guidance about how to treat IPs, and I might think whether I can compose some, though it would be complicated - is it a school? does continuity of pages attacked indicate the same person? is it malicious or just silly? etc. JohnCD (talk) 15:44, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Just being factually accurate is not enough; to have a Wikipedia article, a subject has to have what we call WP:Notability, which is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The test is, have people not connected with the subject thought it significant enough to write substantial comment about? Read Wikipedia is not for things made up one day for more explanation. Neither of the reasons you presented for speedy-deleting the redirect was valid. If you think the redirect should be deleted, you should nominate it at WP:Redirects for discussion. It sounds as though your real objection is to the mention of the theory in the target article Emad Abdullah Ayasrah. If you think that the article is inaccurate, or should not mention the theory, or that he does not meet the WP:Notability requirement, you can suggest changes on the article talk page and try to reach WP:Consensus there, or nominate it at WP:Articles for deletion. Blocking

Hey John!

Can you please take a look at this user for me please?

They have taken exception to a user telling them to "get bent" and seem to think that they can use Wikipedia as retaliation so I blocked them for personal attacks. When I looked at the comment to "get bent" it was actually made in the edit summary by another editor removing a warning that I don't think Alohamesamis should have placed on their talk page, given that they were removing an unnecessary warning, I took "get bent" to mean get lost and I didn't see it at all as a personal attack. If you look at their contributions you will see that Alohamesamis has then retaliated through edit summaries at this user using much more foul language.

User:Jpgordon reviewed my block when Alohamesamis appealed and agreed with me. A second appeal was launched and I reviewed it and turned it down whilst pointing out WP:NPA as that explains how to deal with what someone feels is a personal attack. User:Drmies then looked at my block but they also came back agreeing with me but Alohamesamis still won't accept it! He still feels that if he's attacked by another editor he should have the right to retaliate in the same way. That's 3 of us that have now explained that's not how Wikipedia works. I've blocked him for 31 hours but I don't want him returning if that's the mindset he has of how Wikipedia works - Jimbo Wales would have a fit if Wikipedia ever started working in that way. I was nearly revoking Alohamesamis' talk page access before because he won't accept his block. As far as username goes, I'd be inclined to give this one the benefit of the doubt. I blocked User:Royalstarint which was clearly Royal Star International; this one might be "JLT from Royal Star", an individual so OK as a username, though with evident COI problems. I used a softerblock which invites setting up a new account, so this wouldn't be socking even if it's the same guy, but in fact this was created a couple of hours before I blocked the other. Pages about him were created several times, but they were all deleted because they did not explain why he was important or significant enough to have an encyclopedia article. I see that you have begun to make a page about him through WP:Articles for creation, and that is the right thing to do. Read WP:Your first article for advice. If it is to be kept it will need to establish that he is WP:Notable by giving references that show "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" - see WP:42. I accept your judgment that this article doesn't qualify for speedy deletion, but I disagree that the redirect is useful - the argument that at least someone can find out who the author is doesn't really seem valid, because a Google or Wikipedia search would bring up that information anyway. And we don't -and I think shouldn't- create redirects for every book without an article to its author. The reasons for deletion doesn't really seem to cover the possibility that a redirect might be created for something that is non-notable. So maybe this redirect could be deleted on non-notable grounds instead. Paloma Faith

Although I fully understand the reasons for controlling "edit warring", I was very disappointed to find that you had suspended me for this offence, when the passages I was attempting to correct were clearly inaccurate. It is not right that Wikipedia should be a haven for cranks who have hidden reasons for wishing to disseminate incorrect information and who know that they are protected by Wikipedia's rules and by some sort of misbegotten apparent seniority.

I refer in particular to the date of birth of Paloma Faith. If you read the Talk page for this argument

you will see that only one or two people prefer to believe that an article in The Independent is more reliable than an official birth certificate. The idea that evidence may be unreliable by virtue of a fee being payable in order to verify it, is bizarre in the extreme.

I am not a Wikipedia freak. I simply use it when I require information, and I expect that information to be reliable. I do not expect indisputable facts to be altered by star-struck individuals who cannot bear to accept the truth. When I see something that is badly written, I improve it. When I see something which I know to be wrong, I change it. I cannot believe that you would disagree with me.

I am reluctant, now that I have a copy of Paloma's birth certificate, to edit the page again, as I'm sure another ban would result. However, I have added my findings to the Talk page, and would appreciate it if you would kindly read what I have written, and if you agree with me, either change Paloma's page yourself, or tell me to change it.

Frankly, this whole charade is a total waste of everyone's time, and I look forward to its speedy conclusion.

I think it is highly undesirable to post a public link to a scan of a birth certificate, and I have suppressed those edits, giving my reasons on the talk page. I have also posted a note at WP:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard to get more views on that, and to bring more people to help settle this interminable squabble. John, have you looked recently at the mess which is the Talk page on Paloma Faith's age? Are you really happy that, in the face of the insurmountable evidence for 1981, Wikipedia still shows 1985? It makes me wonder if all those Wikipedia-deniers might be right, and that nothing on this website can be relied upon. Surely, at the very least, 1981 being by far the more likely date, it is that date which should be displayed next to the little blue "disputed" note referring the reader to the Talk page? Robbie Best

Robbie Best was listed for a long time on the notable ex-player section of the Bohemian FC page. Who removed it and why I don't know. He played for 9 seasons with Bohemians, making about 300 appearances and captaining the club for two and a half seasons. He also represented the League of Ireland on the occasions when a representative team was selected, most notably against the Welsh League, the Irish League and against Gothenburg. He was regarded as among the finest central defenders in the League of Ireland in the 1990s and was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur in the 1992-1993 season. Because it's so important to get articles about living people right, we have a rule that they are deleted if they have no reliable source, and have been flagged for ten days as needing one. There are so many, particularly for footballers, that there is no time to go searching for sources for each one: the article author is notified, but if he does nothing about it, the article goes. However, in this case I have found and added a source and restored the article. He is still there on the Bohemians page, but that entry is now a "blue-link" to his article. I have not deleted it, as you will see if you click on Hurly-Burly (Journal). What I deleted was a redirect to it from a non-standard title ''Hurly-Burly (Journal)'' with additional characters, which served no purpose because anyone searching for it would find the main article.

I see that the actual article has been nominated for deletion, and you are welcome to comment in the deletion debate at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hurly-Burly (Journal), but before doing that it would be useful to read Wikipedia:Notability, which describes our inclusion criterion. Deletion of Blind Bison

Hello. I just posted an article about a band named Blind Bison and it was deleted rather quickly. I have been following these guys for quite a while now and I posted the article because they are a great band. They don't have any Grammy nominations yet but neither do some of the other bands that are listed in Wikepedia. My references listed are legitimate. I noticed another band called The Last Bison that has a similar listing that has not been deleted although the bulk of the text on their Wiki is copy and pasted from Twitter, Facebook, and other similar sites. Timothy Dalton page protection re-request

You protected Timothy Dalton for a month on 23:49, 5 November 2012 link. Am I missing something?

I understand the reason that you deleted my earlier post about Blind Bison. I have read A7 a number of times and have looked at a few other band listings that seem to generally qualify for a listing in Wikipedia. What I don't understand is why Wikipedia would want to exist as if it were a hardcover book of limited capacity. There is practically an infinite capacity of recordable space available to Wikipedia and deleting a factual statement about a person, animal, bacteria, organization or otherwise makes absolutely no sense. In a paper printed publication it certainly makes sense, but here??? I swear I'm not a band member.... my son is.... he is awesome as is the entire group. I got rid of my collection of Encyclopedia Britannica a long time ago... Cmracs (talk) 07:45, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

The short answer to "You have lots of space, why don't you allow anybody to write about anything they like, such as their son's band?" is, there is Myspace for that sort of thing, and it's fine for what it does, but you wouldn't go there for an impartial view about anything. If Wikipedia is a useful encyclopedia, it is only because it is more selective and has rules about WP:Verifiability and WP:Conflict of interest.

I'm told that back in the very early days it was thought that Wikipedia could be a "list of everything" with articles about every band, company, person, song, book... It was soon realised that there were problems with that, and over time a consensus has been hammered out to use an inclusion criterion called Wikipedia:Notability which asks for evidence of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." The test is, have people not connected with the subject thought it significant enough to write substantial comment about? That has the advantages of being a more objective test than "do we think it's important?", and of ensuring that there are independent sources to base an article on; it links to the verifiability policy that "any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source".

For various particular subjects, more detailed notability criteria have been worked out, like WP:BAND.

Reasons for not including everything are listed here and include the needle-in-a-haystack argument: "having articles on the many unnoteworthy individuals named John Anderson makes it difficult for readers to find the article about the notable U.S. presidential candidate with that name." Another is that articles about non-notable subjects are bound to be written by people close to them and so are likely to be promotional in tone (e.g. your son's band "always gets people on their feet dancing the night away... a breath of fresh air... awesome and original sound... ") We do not want to become an advertising notice-board.

Finally, an anyone-can-edit encyclopedia is very far from maintenance-free: it is continuously degraded by a steady flow of vandalism. Important articles remain usable because one or more "regular" Wikipedians have them "watchlisted" so that vandalism is promptly corrected, but with minor articles that is often not the case, despite the best efforts of the (volunteer) Recent Changes patrol. Just yesterday an article about a minor film actor was nominated for deletion as a hoax because it made ridiculous claims; it turned out that it had been vandalised more than three years ago, but no-one had noticed.

Summary: if we were not selective, we would turn into another Myspace, but we are trying to do something different from that. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 16:08, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

• Yes, you're right. I am reluctant to use G3 blatant hoax unless there has been actual intent to deceive. A pity there is no speedy for "blatantly made up one day", but it never gets agreed. I guess this could be considered vandalism, as in "no reasonable person could have thought this would improve the encyclopedia". Hi JohnCD, I recommend speedy deletion for the following reasons: This article falls under so-called "vanity articles" - articles that have been written for promotional purposes (usually by the subject of the article) rather than for their encyclopedic value. The citation used for the "stamp issued by the Government of India" comes from kakaji.org (a site on the subject). Please come up with a neutral reliable source instead of citing from the subject's site. Explain why the article is notable and worth keepiing. I suggest you consider developing the article by adding sound and reliable sources to demonstrate notability. Speedy deletion is only done for the very restricted set of reasons given at WP:CSD#List of criteria, and "vanity article" is not one of them, unless it is so promotional as to come under WP:CSD#G11 blatant advertisement, which this is not. It was evidently not written by the subject, who died in 1986; and though the reference link is to a website about him, it is quoting an Indian Government announcement of the commemorative stamp. Reconsider deletion of Userfy

Please consider restoring User:Sitush/List of Jat clans as it was userfied under Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_Jat_clans only a few weeks ago. Apparently the article had over 5000 edits. The fact that the contents were moved to a user who proposed delete seems odd as exactly this could happen where the original article and the userfied page could be deleted by the delete supporter. If User:Sitush does not wish to host the userfied article, it can be hosted in my userspace. I represent an independent third party in this matter and was only brought to this by discussion in another AfD where userification is being proposed. Mkdw^talk 21:51, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

The decision of the AfD was delete and it was userfied to Sitush only in order to allow him to check the category against it, which he presumably did before requesting deletion. I will ask Sitush and the closing admin, Spinningspark, for their views, but I would be unwilling to go against the AfD close unless they agree. What do you want it for? Per WP:UP#COPIES: "Userspace... should not be used to indefinitely host... old revisions, or deleted content, or your preferred version of disputed content." As the deleting admin, I would have no objection to userfying the article if it were for the purpose of working on something that was intended to end up in article space. However, it is highly objectionable to restore it simply for the sake of "hosting" it somewhere. Userspace is not meant to be used for indefinitely hosting pseudo-articles. I struggle to see what could ever be returned to userspace in this case - all the legitimate entries should now be in the category. If there is concern that Sitush has not done a good job of this task it could be very temporarily restored for someone else to take a look at. I was the editor who commented about the recent deletion of the userpage in an ongoing AFD that Mkdw saw. Then Mkdw invited me here.

I may have seen the List of Jat clans list-article but if so only briefly; i did not participate in the AFD. Based on what was said in the AFD plus assertions that the current category system has been confirmed to be accurate and to convey what was the accurate content of the list-article, it seems to me that there is an immediate need for the list-article to exist, either brand new or revised from the old one. One purpose (among several purposes covered in wp:CLN for a list-article corresponding to a category, is to capture and index the articles (so that non-understanding invisible edits dropping a category at any articles don't remove them from the master set). Category:Jat clans currently contains 813 articles (3+114+18+13+170+231+9+117+67+71=813). The AFD nomination itself stated "What seems apparent is that this article is not required. A valid outcome is to remove it and to merge its content insofar as it is valid and valuable, to Jat people, the stated main article, and set this article as a redirect to that one." But clearly it is impossible to put a list of 813 articles into the Jat people article; it seems apparent to me that a separate list-article is useful and needed.

I'm not particularly interested in Jat clans, and I recognize that this could be a "can of worms", but it seems it would be helpful for someone to (re-)create the list-article, and I am willing to do that. Having no history with this, I would be inclined to keep it very simple and streamlined, and probably not include a lot of content from the past versions of the list-article. I am mainly a content builder but I myself have been willing to drastically strip down other articles at times. However, it would be better to have the 5,000+ edit history there, rather than have the topic simply replaced by a brand new article, as (1) I see no big BLP or other arguments about the edit history being so awful it must be eradicated, in the AFD. And (2) I rather expect that there were valid contributions within the list article, e.g. someone created a Jat clan article and added the Jat clan to the list, where the new article will also include the same Jat clan, so it would seem improper per Wikipedia licensing to deny credit to the prior contributors. And I would simply like to see the previous versions and prior discussions at its Talk page. If I had the list-article in my userspace, I would then expect to take some time to look at it and to develop something. This is not the place to reopen the deletion debate. That decision has been made at a community forum, please accept it. Normally, I would readily agree to userfication so that the objections raised at the AfD could be worked on and eventually returned to mainspace. However, the decision in this case was that a category would be better than a list. Recreating the list is simply undoing the decision of the AfD, and if that is all you want the article for then I decline to userfy it. Note that it is possible to add the category to the see also section of Jat people if you so wish. I see you've done a few of these under G6 which is fine, but their details really should be suppressed for their own protection. Also, please do not identify material as oversight-able in a public log, as it increases rather than reduces their visibility.

Question about a blocked user possibly editing under another account

Hello. In October you blocked Dkjhbrewfhyjegfuygf (talk · contribs · logs) for numerous copyright violations. I happened to stumble across this today while warning TherezaAmbrose (talk · contribs · logs) for the same thing, on a page that both editors have edited. I noticed that their contributions are very similar, and Thereza's edits began a month after Dkjhbrew was blocked. Would this be something for an SPI, or no, since the original editor is already blocked? Or ANI? I'm not sure what to do, but I think I hear quacking. I'd appreciate some help/advice. I was mentioned in the Delete page discussion on the Daphne Caruana Galizia entry.

I would like to ask you kindly to delete the reference to me, as I have nothing to do with said person. Indeed, my only connection with her is that she hounded me on her blog and on her newspaper column, I sued her for libel and won. She then threatened to go to the European Court of Human Rights for a remedy (yes! yes!) but never did. Apart from her savage attack on me, and my judicial victory, I have absolutely nothing to do with this person. I therefore cannot see why I should be mentioned in her delete page.

In other words, if she is not worth to be included in Wikipedia, it follows that victims of her writings too should not be featured. Otherwise, certain quarters (I wonder whether it is she herself who is writing under a pseudonym - the obsessive insistence and the insult-hurling do remind one of her style) would be hoodwinking Wikipedia, by using a Delete page to convey the very same material that had been deleted! (May I point out that the Court of Magistrates has, at least on two occasions, referred to this person as "mentally unstable". If you wish, I can include links to the relative Court judgments.)

Consequently, I ask you kindly to remove my name from that page.

No, you don't. Accounts must be for individuals only, and they are strongly discouraged from writing about themselves or their own businesses, because of the WP:Conflict of interest involved. It is also very unlikely that a local auto repair shop will be WP:Notable enough to have an article - "notability" is Wikipedia's way of deciding what subjects shall have articles, and requires showing evidence of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." It seems MAACO can do that, but can you? See WP:42 for what that means - mentions in the local paper won't be enough - and for more information Wikipedia is not about YOU, User:JohnCD/Not a noticeboard and the WP:FAQ/Organizations. Sorry to be discouraging, but Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a place for people to write about themselves and their businesses, and I do not want you to waste a lot of time and be disappointed. First, if an article is not to be speedy-deleted it needs to make clear why its subject is important and significant enough to have an article in an encyclopedia. Your Kilbane article just said he was b.1999 and an Australian actor and singer. That could be any kid who appeared in a school play.

Second, if an article is to be kept, it needs references to verify what it says. Wikipedia has a WP:Verifiability policy that "any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source." That means something like newspapers or official websites - not places like Youtube or blogs where anyone can write anything. For articles about living people, that is so important that they are automatically deleted after ten days if unreferenced.

Third, just appearing in one production may not be enough to have an article. Read WP:Notability and WP:Notability (people), especially the section WP:ENTERTAINER.

Before you write any more, read WP:Your first article carefully. That will help you write acceptable articles. There is an WP:Article wizard you can use to help you through the process. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 15:51, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

In the interest of teaching a man to fish, you can rename a page (technically called moving it) by going to the page and clicking on the "Move" link; this will be in the menu marked with a down arrow in the top-right corner, next to the search bar, if you're in the normal Wikipedia skin. If you're using Monobook, then it should be one of the tabs in the right corner. This will take you to the move page screen, where you can type in the new title and an edit summary; be sure to look at the namespace selector next to the title field, using "(Article)" for the main article space. There are some other checkbox options; they can be useful in certain situations, but the default should be fine for most main article space moves. Keep in mind that the move process will also create a redirect at the old title, pointing to the new one; admins have the option to suppress creation of this redirect, but non-admins do not, so if the redirect makes no sense to have, you need to mark it for speedy deletion with something like the {{db-g6}} (uncontroversial housecleaning or maintenance) tag. For the Anti-Cluebot NG Movement to have an article in the main encyclopedia, it would need to have been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources outside Wikipedia which could be cited to show WP:Notability, and it hasn't. I'll give you some advice on your talk page on what you could do within Wikipedia, but I don't think you'll get much support - the general view of Cluebot NG is that it does many mens'-worth of essential maintenance work. Wondering if you can review this block for me please to ensure I've reached the right decision.

I blocked this account a few days ago, the reason being is that this editor could be impersonating Lorraine Newman. I know that the rules for blocking people normally state that if the account hasn't been active in 2-3 weeks then to do nothing as it's normally considered abandoned then. This editors last edits were just over 4 weeks ago, however I made an exception in this case due to the possibility that it could be someone impersonating Lorraine Newman. The real Lorraine Newman is the Executive Producer at EastEnders, this editor does claim to be Lorraine Newman on the talk page but in all honesty everything they've spoken about on the talk page about EastEnders you can find in a general Google search or even by looking on Wikipedia! I just have a gut feeling that it's not her.

This wasn't a report to WP:UAA, in fact I noticed this when I was checking something on the EastEnders page. I noticed someone had created a page for her now and went to look at it out of general interest. When I looked at the page history to find out who created the page, well that's when I noticed the name.

Like I say it is outwith the blocking guidelines because the editor hasn't edited in about 4 weeks, however I'm erring on the safe side because I don't want Wikipedia to get the blame for a famous person being impersonated. I think I would perhaps have started with a message asking her to email to confirm her identity, but it's a matter of judgement and I wouldn't say what you did was wrong - this is a field where impersonation by a fan is not unlikely, and if there wasn't a convincing response you would need to go on to block anyway. Perhaps you could soften the block notice with a more personal message below, paraphrasing the fourth para of WP:REALNAME, to emphasise that the block is to protect her against possible impersonation.

User:Danny Madison etc...

For your perusal: I'm not sure what these users are doing, but it doesn't appear to be likely to benefit WP: User:Jimmy Madison, User:Richard Madison, User:Danny Madison, User:Danny R. Madison, User:Danny J. Madison. Jimmy and Richard's user pages are both mangled versions of James Madison. The three Danny user pages are nearly identical and appear to be hoaxes masquerading as articles. Another apparent member of the cluster is User:Madison Sims, as user Danny Madison has edited that user page also. I didn't know if this was worthy of an SPI case since none of these users have edited outside the cluster of their own user pages, and it might be two different people involved. However, it doesn't look like it really belongs on WP either.

Over in Commons back on July 4 user James Madison uploaded the image found in the three Danny articles. The same Commons user also dabbled in template creation there, but with no success.

I have tagged all of these pages to prevent indexing, but that's as far as I've gone. Perhaps you know the best course of action to take from here. Thanks. --| Uncle Milty | talk | 07:25, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

I have deleted one per WP:BLP. I think the right thing to do with the other userpages is a joint MfD as WP:FAKEARTICLEs, and accompany that with a note on their talk pages that WP is not for that sort of game. Request for assistance

Dear John, I wonder whether I might enlist your assistance in a matter. I am an ex Journalist from New York, but British born and current resident. I have created a page on a CMS website that had been reported by a famous bank, the BBC and in use by a Cancer Charity, and therefore worthy of attention. The page was looked upon favourably already by another wikipedian, and together we have made a concerted effort to making it very readable, and useful.

However, another user who has already been noted for jumping to speedy conclusions to remove pages has nominated the page for deletion.

Whilst I can understand the motive for doing so, it is very hasty for the following reason: Since the software is non-commercial (i.e. it does not charge for its services) it does not require a 'powered by' slogan, nor branding of any kind and therefore has gone (in my opinion, unfairly) unnoticed for some time, despite it being growing significantly for over 5 years.

Deletion discussions of this kind are routine, and no single person will decide the result - the discussion remains open for seven days, any interested user can comment, and after seven days an uninvolved administrator will decide what to do, based not on a count of heads but on the strength of the arguments put forward in terms of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The issue here is that Wikipedia does not expect to have an an entry for every product that exists; the criterion used is called WP:Notability and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" - see WP:42. The more references you can find and add to the article, the better. You are welcome to comment in the discussion - read WP:DISCUSSAFD for advice - and you can make a formal keep !vote (the ! is to emphasis that it is not a vote) but should only do that once. About five weeks ago, I started a thread suggesting that we move Tokyo Girl (TV series) to the Tokyo Girl title and possibly mention the song and link to the song's album. Since then, there have been three supporting comments and no objections so I think it's time to close it. I initially asked User:DGG but he declined. Thanks! Please Review

There is an ongoing ANI thread regarding me[[6]]. I'm not the issue here (really!). We have a history of accusations against me of Bias, Racism, Manipulation and a overall disregard to wiki policy. I'd like one of two things possibly both. The thread should be closed, it's a waste of everyone's time. The author themselves may possibly qualify for a token block as the personal attacks, assumptions of bad faith and is also a COI account as they are writing about a personal friend. The editor has been warned by multiple people at the AFD, On their talk page, my talk page and also at ANI about AGF. Either way it should be stopped to limit disruption. I'm fully open to reviewing my own edits on this because I have bent over backwards trying to explain the policies at length and nothing has been inappropriate but the circus needs to stop. This is a project to build a serious encyclopedia, not a social-networking or gossip site for people to rhapsodize about their girlfriends' "ripply, golden hair, luscious pinks lips and complexion, exotic green eyes... " etc. For that sort of thing, try Facebook or Myspace. If you want to make a serious contribution here, read WP:Your first article and WP:Notability (people). • After a quick Google search, I have to admit that however implausible EE UU may look to me, it does appear to be used - but this is the English Wikipedia. I note that even es:EE.UU has been deleted - if they don't want it, we certainly don't. I don't care about all the variations with dots, but we should have EE UU and EE.UU. - they look odd to British eyes, but they are a standard Spanish abbreviation for Estados Unidos, redirects are cheap, they get about one hit a day each, and they were kept at RfD in 2011. There's a reason why WP:CSD#R3 says recently created - a long-standing redirect may have external links that would be broken by deleting it. JohnCD (talk) 21:01, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
