Censorship of factual information---------------------------------------------

I was unfairly blocked from editing - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_San_Bernardino_shooting I added a reference from (https://www.fbi.gov/news/news_blog/fbi-will-investigate-san-bernardino-shootings-as-terrorist-act) to Islamic terrorism and was unjustly blocked from posting the truth? I will make sure this goes viral since I'm being censored from posting facts with a .gov reference supporting it!

I'm not clear on exactly what the intersection is between HostBot and the user whose name also shows up in those teahouse welcome templates, so maybe I need to talk to @I JethroBT: instead, but surely we should not be welcoming people and inviting them to the teahouse literally one minute after they've been blocked as a sock? (See User talk:Pppakistan) Can the bot check for that sort of thing and abort the task if it finds a block? Beeblebrox (talk) 21:13, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

@Beeblebrox: The short timespan between the block and the invite is actually the problem: my script checks the blocked status of all the day's potential invitees in a batch (for performance reasons), between sending the invites, so there's a gap of between 1 and ~10 minutes between the block check and the time at which any individual invite is sent. There are other potential lags that can cause this issue as well: for example, the database that holds the block table occasionally lags, so the block status of a particular user may not be up-to-date when its checked. Anyway, thanks for reporting the issue, and please report again if you see this (or anything else weird) crop up. I've only had half a dozen block reports in 4 years (see also 1, 2, 3, 4), so my sense is that this problem is rare. Jtmorgan (talk) 00:35, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

@Beeblebrox: FYI I've seen this case where a invite is received a few minutes after a block is issued on only a few occasions. It would be ideal to be able to check each user individually before an invite is sent, but even then, some issues with lag would probably still be at play as Jonathan describes. Jonathan would know this best, but I also suspect an individual approach (as opposed to a small batch system) may not be very effective (i.e. editors who meet the criteria would be passed over). (talk page stalker) Hey Bishonen. This sort of thing has come up before (see here with an explanation), though it seems fairly uncommon. One important issue is that there is a 1-10 minute gap between evaluating the blocked status of editors who can be potentially invited and when the invitation is actually sent. Another issue has to do with delays in updates to the database of blocked editors that HostBot checks. I, JethroBT ^{drop me a line} 22:18, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

About HostBot

Hello, I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but recently today in recent changes, over half of the changes I see are HostBot's. However, I have it set to not show me the edit of bots. Any idea why this might happen? Thanks, JumpiMaus (talk) 16:08, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi JumpiMaus. Sorry for the delayed response—I've been distracted IRL. I'll look into this: HostBot used to have a bot flag, but a few months ago I changed the authentication method (to OAuth) the bot uses to log in and make edits. It's possible that this change removed the bot flag. I'll examine the code this week and report back what I find. Thanks for the heads-up, J-Mo 20:04, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

About the importance of Koolcard

If you go to Singapore, you may use a card named Koolcard, it has already shown its existence (more than 1,000 merchants have already used it) in local market under the cooperation of China Smartpay and NETS (you can wiki it in Wikipedia). Since it is the “baby” of NETS, why not be available to let the users be clear about it. That is why it should be known in Wiki. Besides in mainland China, we have 30,000 around fans in Weibo, 10,000+ fans in WeChat official Account.

Moreover we have BAT (Baidu, Alibaba & Tencent) as the partners to supply the support, and the potential users will be 0.3 billion+, for such a huge number how can we say no important about Koolcard. Thanks for the heads-up, Largoplazo. Looks like the page was the user talkpage of Enochjd11. HostBot created the page with a Teahouse welcome, but the user subsequently used their talkpage to draft an article and moved it into Wikipedia namespace. It happens! Green Mountain Anarchist Collective

How can I prove the imagages I am using are NOT copy righted. I have teh paper copies in front of me and they plainly state they reject their copy rights and they are free to use ("for any purpose but coperate profit"). Hense they are ideal for The Commons. I can't edit it myself, but if you leave your request at Wikipedia_talk:Teahouse, there's probably an admin around who can at least consider it. I've left a fully-protected edit request instead out there to transclude the button template inside the invite. Unnecessary code on User's talk page only increases it's size and make it difficult to use the text editor whereas transclusion cuts down the code to a much simpler and shorter form. I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. New Page Review needs your help

Hi Jtmorgan,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

Research:Wikimedia Summer of Research 2011

Hi Jonathan. You were part of the team that provided the above research. Most of the results of that action were extremely valuable and were partly what triggered my volunteer collaboration with the WMF to seek for and develop solutions for correctly patrolling new pages. There has been only minimal progress since our Skype discussion 5 months ago and I am wondering if it would be possible to get the 2011 researach updated. All that would be needed are just some of the graphs and charts updating using the same formulae again. I'm contacting you because you are one of the few employees left from that era and I would assume you would know who to ask, or at least let me know who I can ask. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 09:19, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi Kudpung, happy to help if I can. What new data would you like to see? Some of the datasets are easier to replicate that others. And some of them are within my capabilities to generate, while others are not. Additionally, while it's true that EpochFail and I (and of course DarTar) are the only current staff who were directly involved in the summer of research, other former research interns are still wiki-active on a volunteer basis (see Staeiou, Whym, and Junkie.dolphin), and may be able to help with datasets and/or graphs that they had a hand in developing. And of course folks like HaeB, Erik Zachte, Neil P. Quinn, and Guillom may also be able and willing to help out, depending on what you need. Anyway, just letting you know you have options. Hey Kudpung, I saw that you posted a duplicate question on my talkpage, but I figured it would be easier if I just responded here. So, yeah, updating some of these graphs won't be trivial. For example, I just looked at m:Research:The Speed of Speedy Deletions and I don't see a query or something else I can work from. I think it would take roughly 5-6 hours of work to replicate each analysis. Essentially, you're asking for a week's worth of work by one or two researchers. Still, I think we can do some of it. If you can be very specific about what you're trying to learn, that'll help us focus our efforts where they'd be most effective. --EpochFail (talk • contribs) 15:25, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

What I'm working on EpochFail, is specifically the effects of poor tagging done through New Page Patrol on articles created by new users. I think some recents stats and summaries can underline once more the findings of Summer of Research 2011, which was a very important programe, but which I think the volunteer communities took less notice of than the the people at the WMF who decide on strategies and priorities. We need some recent data to help the community understand that reforms to the way in which new pages are patrolled are needed, and to help your colleagues at the WMF decide that a proper landing page is needed on registration, for new users whose first intention is to write an article.

For#1, it's important to demonstrate the annoyance that is felt by good fatih editors when their articles are tagged for deletion either: Because the patroller is not sufficiently knowledgeable about policies, or the creator was not adequately aware of what constitutes an acceptable Wikipedia article. As a consequence, we think we're still losing potential new users, but we need data to support that theory.
For#2 we need to know if Receiving a warning in a user's first 30 days does correlate with whether a user is still editing 2-6 months after their first edit. still holds true.
For#3, I can probably do without it. Patrollers never reported locally to me that they felt they were overloaded. Volunteers just stop anything when they feel they've done enough. We already know that we don't have enough active patrollers today.
For#4, I can probably do without. It's more specifically related to reverted edits.

If you and Jonathan can come up with data that's easier and quicker to realise than running the same operations done in 2011, I am of course open to any suggestions. Likewise, don't hesistate to ask if I haven't explained clearly what is needed. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 16:02, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

@Kudpung: I'll stake my reputation on the continued validity of the findings in #1 and #2. Generally, I would only take the time to replicate a study like that if I had a reason to believe that there had been some systemic change in the interim. For example, if the notification templates had all been swapped out for new ones that had a substantially different tone (more aggressive, or more conciliatory), or if deletion criteria had been dramatically revised. The actions of individual patrollers—some of whom may be more strict or lax in their enforcement than others, or who may take a more or less personalized, hands-on approach—these mostly average out. However, I agree that a registration landing page would be useful. This might be something that the Collaboration team would be interested in working on, after they deploy the the current suite of edit review improvements tools. My intent is not to shut down your line of inquiry, by the way. Is there other, additional evidence that you would consider to be relevant to improving edit/article review—for both reviewers and reviewed? J-Mo 03:09, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

It's certainly reassuring to know you would stake your reputation on it, I would stake mine too on the same findings. However, our community is a very picky bunch of people when it comes to debates, and they are likely to claim 'bad faith' if you forget to dot an i in the RfC statement. If they are not given hard facts, they would laugh me out of town if I used 6 year old data. Still, your comments are fine for me to comment at the WMF meeting. Thanks. In an interesting parallel, I'm experiencing some of that very pickiness (rigor?) firsthand right now in a spirited debate on the Teahouse talkpage. If I lose that one, I'll likely have more bandwidth to turn my attention to researching new user support options elsewhere. Which might be good news for your project, I suppose. Sigh. Anyway, keep me in the loop here? I'll try to reply promptly. I'm deeply concerned that requiring autoconfirmed status for article creation will have lasting, negative consequences for new editor retention (and by extension, long term community health and content quality). But I'm not opposed to experimentation. I'm also conscious of the mounting backlogs and danger of reviewer burnout, and the inadequacy of current tools. J-Mo 03:11, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

ACTRIAL wouldn't lose a single potential reasonable author of acceptable new articles. The current system of patrolling new pages is losing us more than that already. Unfortunately there are no stats to prove it and no way to create stats for it. The only thing that counts is the years of empirical hands-on experience made by the tiny handful of highly experienced editors and admins who have stuck with searching for solutions all through these past 6 years. THe fact is that about 85 - 90% of all new articles fom new (that is non-autoconfirmed) users get deeted. Don't worry about reviewer burnout - there never was any. Volunteers in any project stop before that happens, and it's the lack of community and WMF support that has caused most of the competent patrollers to drift away. Weve now given them the support and the inadequacy of the tools is therefore the priority now. If all else fails, the community might just go ahead and enact their huge consensus for ACTRIAL - it's only a small extension of something the WMF already did 10 years ago.
