Thank You

Hi Admin,

Thank you for your help :). May I ask on how do I issue a warning (if I can do it)?

Venomous Sniper (talk) 16:07, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Venomous Sniper, a list of templated warning messages can be found here. Simply substitute those templates onto the user talk page of the user you would like to warn to send them a warning. Most warning messages can be issued by anybody.
If you have not already, I would encourage you to check out the Counter-Vandalism Unit Academy to learn more about combating vandalism on Wikipedia. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 16:10, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

National Archives of Ireland

Hi there! I was looking through the edit history of the National Archives of Ireland and I noticed you undid my edits to the page and then put them back the next minute. I'm a student doing this for a class and for the sake of learning, and sheer curiosity, can you tell me why that was done? Is there something I can correct on the edits? A better way to format them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Archivesjam (talkcontribs) 01:04, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Archivesjam, that revert was made by simple accident. I undid my own edit a minute later when I realized my mistake. Sorry if it caused any confusion! —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 01:31, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
  • A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.

Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Growth team updates #4

Welcome to the fourth newsletter for the new Growth team!

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.

We need your feedback!

We have two requests for community members:

  1. Now that data is coming in for the welcome survey, we are planning how to use that data to personalize the newcomer's first day. See our current thoughts here, and join the conversation here.
  2. Try out the help panel's interactive prototype, and read about how we're planning to roll it out, and post any thoughts or reactions here.

Two Growth team projects have been deployed (detailed updates here)

  • Personalized first day (welcome survey) was deployed on November 20 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias.
    • The survey is now being shown to half of new users (A/B test). Responses are being recorded in the database. We'll report on initial results during December.
    • We are planning to test a second version of the survey, called "Variation C", which we think will maximize the number of users who complete the survey and stay on the wiki.
    • The original objective of this project was to give newcomers the materials they need to achieve their goals, and so now we are currently planning how we will use the information collected in the welcome survey to personalize the newcomer's experience. We hope community members will read our current thinking and join the conversation here. Some of the plans we are considering include:
      • Making it easy for newcomers to see editing activity around the topic areas in which they indicated that they're interested.
      • Connecting interested newcomers to experienced editors.
      • Surfacing the help content most relevant to the reason for which the newcomers created their accounts.
  • Understanding first day (EditorJourney) was deployed on November 15 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias. It has been done after a longer security review and final testing than expected. Data is now being recorded for all new users on those wikis, and we've been auditing the data and preparing to make initial reports during December. Stay tuned for the next newsletter!

Help panel is under construction

  • Focus on help desk (help panel) is planned to be deployed during the week of January 7 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias.
  • This interactive prototype is the best way to see the design and wording in the feature.
  • We ran live user tests on the prototype, with results posted here.
  • In addition to giving the ability to ask a question, the help panel will also contain a set of links to existing help content. Our ambassadors on Czech and Korean Wikipedias are determining the right initial set of most helpful links in this task.
  • We encourage community members to try out the prototype and read about the rules for who will get the feature, and add any thoughts to this discussion.

We are still looking for volunteers

Do you want to participate to our experiments? We are looking for new communities to work with us (especially a new mid-size wiki), and people to become ambassadors to help us to communicate with the different communities. Discover how you can involve yourself or your community.

Also, please share this update with your community and interested people!

Growth team updates #1

Welcome to the first newsletter for the new Growth team!

The Growth Team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects. We will be starting with Wikipedias, but we hope these changes will benefit every community.

8 ideas we consider: tell us what you think about them!

We are considering new features to build, that could retain new editors in mid-size Wikipedias. We will be testing new ideas in Czech and Korean Wikipedias, and then we'll talk to more communities (yours!) about adopting the ideas that work well.

We have posted the 8 ideas we are considering. We would really appreciate your thoughts and the thoughts from your community. Please share the ideas, and tell us what do you and your community think of those ideas before September 9.

Share your experiences with newcomers

We want to hear about what is working and what is not working for new contributors in your wiki. We also want to hear any reactions, questions, or opinions on our work. Please post on the team’s talk page, in any language!

Administrators' newsletter – January 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Thank you for talking to me before unblocking the user. I appreciate the courtesy, not to mention the compliance with policy.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:50, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

I apologize for the dripping sarcasm. Regardless of my irritation, it was uncalled for. I would like to know, though, why you didn't first talk to me before unblocking. My assumption is I would not have objected to the unblock. Just so you know, the reason I picked a week is because much of the disruption, etc., was occurring at the AfD, so I figured a week would prevent the user from editing the AfD, which, of course, usually lasts a week. Otherwise, the block would have been shorter, and there is a good argument that it should have been shorter anyway. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 02:00, 6 January 2019 (UTC)
Hi Bbb23, and thanks for your apology. Perhaps I should apologize too for not pinging you first before unblocking. I had initially thought about doing so, but after reviewing the user's edits carefully, I felt that a week seemed a little too excessive; if a block was warranted, I might've expected 24 to 48 hours as being the appropriate duration. Since the user had already been blocked for a little over 72 hours, I decided that, given how I felt the block should've been shorter (and I think 72 hours would be the appropriate maximum duration) I decided to unblock. The user had actually come onto #wikipedia-en-unblock connect asking for someone to review the request which is how it came to my attention; I would probably not have even known about this incident otherwise. Thanks, —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 02:44, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

Protection of Raashi Bawa

Yesturday night , you took the advantage of being an admin by protecting my sister ( Raashi Bawa) 's Wikipedia Page. You have power , it's your decision , I will not say anything , but... do you know her page was deleted with false conditions? You really made her upset . I will do nothing to you , but god is there and he will definitely protect my sister and give her justice one day... And before deleting this message , think what would you do if the same happened to your sister , hoping that you respect girls in your country.Thank you for reading this message.Jcphfc0001 (talk) 02:09, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Jcphfc0001, Wikipedia's goals are not to make people happy or to give justice to people. Our goal is to build an encyclopedia, and there are things that we can and can not accept. We can only accept articles about figures who meet our standards for notability. You should be aware that the article was deleted after a community discussion, which formed the consensus that the subject was not notable for a Wikipedia article at this time. We consider going against consensus to be a form of disruption that prevents us from focusing on our goal of creating an encyclopedia, which is why the article was deleted after being recreated, and which is why I create protected the page to prevent further inappropriate recreations. You should also be aware that comments like "You made [someone] upset" or "you should respect [people] in your country" are off-topic and irrelevant to the very reason as to why the article was deleted, which was that the subject in question was not notable; making these comments serve no purpose other than to frustrate other people and don't address any of the reasons why the article was deleted. Lastly, you must remember to comment on content and not contributors, which includes avoiding religious threats or even suggestions that you will do something to an editor in real life in response to something they did on Wikipedia; these will not solve the problem and may result in blocks from editing or even local authorities being contacted if necessary. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 03:27, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

User:K6ka I think you didn't get what I said . Firstly , I clearly specified thaylt I am nOT giving any Threat , so please don't comment on that. Secondly , I said that her page was deleted with reason that she worked in only one sitcom show , whereas the reality is that she has worked on 3 television shows , so the condition of deleting her page was totally false. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.88.26.236 (talk) 04:37, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

I will do nothing to you , but god is there and he will definitely protect my sister and give her justice one day sounds like you were implying a threat, which in any case is off-topic and should never have been mentioned in the first place. Secondly, nowhere in your first message did you ever mention the number of TV shows she worked on. Thirdly, you are not even logged in right now, so I am not even sure if I am responding to the right person. I won't continue this absurd discussion any longer. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 15:26, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Enquiry about username taken

Hi K6ka, I have seen you are dealing with my user renaming. For what I've seen, the user that holds the other username has no activity and has not been active since 2009. Is there some way to somehow reclaim that unused username? By the way, that user was most probably me making some tests with a now extinct e-mail account, but I am not sure of that.

Thanks! --Luis andres gonzalez (talk) 00:27, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Luis andres gonzalez.
The username is eligible for usurpation, which you can request here. However, you only have three edits made over the course of nine years, so you would almost certainly not be considered eligible to request usurpation of another user account. In general, we prefer only granting usurpations to established editors, usually those with at least 400 total edits and be registered for at least six months. Usurpation would be the way of reclaiming unused usernames, but as of now you're not eligible to request for that at this time. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 01:46, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

removed Harro5Jenks24GraftR. Baley

Interface administrator changes

removedEnterprisey

Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
  • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

Miscellaneous

  • Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
  • A new IRC bot is available that allows you to subscribe to notifications when specific filters are tripped. This requires that your IRC handle be identified.

Growth team updates #5

Welcome to the fifth newsletter for the new Growth team!

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.

New projects for discussion

We began the "Personalized first day" project with the welcome survey so that we could gather information about what newcomers are trying to accomplish. The next step is to use that information to create experiences that help the newcomers accomplish their goal – actually personalizing their first day. We asked for community thoughts in the previous newsletter, and after discussing with community members and amongst our team, we are now planning two projects as next steps: "engagement emails" and "newcomer homepage".

  • Engagement emails: this project was first discussed positively by community members here back in September 2018, and the team how has bandwidth to pursue it. The idea is that newcomers who leave the wiki don't get encouraged to return to the wiki and edit. We can engage them through emails that send them the specific information they need to be successful – such as contact from a mentor, the impact of their edits, or task recommendations. Please read over the project page, and comment on its discussion page with any ideas, questions, or concerns. Do you think this is a good idea? Where could we go wrong?
  • Newcomer homepage: we developed the idea for this project after analyzing the data from the welcome survey and EditorJourney datasets. We saw that many newcomers seem to be looking for a place to get started – a place that collects their past work, options for future work, and ways to learn more. We can build this place, and it can connect to the engagement emails. The content of both could be guided by what newcomers say they need during their welcome survey, and contain things like contact from a mentor, impact of their edits, or task recommendations. Please read over the project page, and comment on its discussion page with any ideas, questions, or concerns. Do you think this is a good idea? Where could we go wrong?

Initial reports on newcomer activity

We have published initial reports on each of the team's first two projects. These reports give the basic numbers from each project, and there are many more questions we will continue to answer in future reports. We're excited about these initial findings. They have already helped us define and design parts of our future projects.

  • Welcome survey: the initial report on welcome survey responses is available here. Some of the main findings:
    • Most users respond to the survey, giving it high response rates of 67% and 62% in Czech and Korean Wikipedias, respectively.
    • The survey does not cause newcomers to be less likely to edit.
    • The most common reason for creating an account in Korean Wikipedia is to read articles—not for editing—with 29% of Korean users giving that responses.
    • Large numbers of respondents said they are interested in being contacted to get help with editing: 36% in Czech and 53% in Korean.
  • Understanding first day: the initial report on what newcomers do on their first day is available here. Some of the main findings:
    • Large numbers of users view help or policy pages on their first day: 42% in Czech and 28% in Korean.
    • Large numbers of users view their own User or User Talk page on their first day: 34% in Czech and 39% in Korean.
    • A majority of new users open an editor on their first day – but about a quarter of them do not go on to save an edit during that time.

Help panel deployment

The help panel was deployed in Czech and Korean Wikipedias on January 10. Over the past four weeks:

  • About 400 newcomers in each wiki have seen the help panel button.
  • About 20% of them open up the help panel.
  • About 50% of those who open it up click on one of the links.
  • About 5% of Czech users ask questions, and about 1% of Korean users ask questions.

We think that the 20% open rate and 50% click rate are strong numbers, showing that a lot of people are looking for help, and many want to help themselves by looking at help pages. The somewhat lower numbers of asking questions (especially in Korean Wikipedia) has caused us to consider new features to allow people to help themselves. We're going to be adding a search bar to the help panel next, which will allow users to type a search that only looks for pages in the Help and Wikipedia namespaces.

How to create a good feedback page?

What is the way to built a good help page? What blocks you when writing an help page? Your replies will help to create better help contents to newcomers, that would be used on Help panel.

Bajadera

Hi form Croatia. My name is Ana Maria Šuker and I work in the leading manufacturer of confectionery in south-eastern Europe - Kraš. Kraš is the owner of brand Bajadera, which is Croatian trademark - the brand and the name. On English version of Wikipedia stands that Bajadera is desert from Serbia. This is a violation of the trademark and I need to change that. I have requested that Bajadera page should be deleted. I would really appreciated your help in order to avoid any legal actions from our side. Kind regards. Ana Maria Digital Marketing Manager at Kraš d.d. Croatia Merien 1985 (talk) 17:54, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi, Wikipedia page on legal threats defines legal threat as “a threat to engage in an external (real life) legal or other governmental process that would target other editors”. In my comment there is no mention on engaging legal process targeting other editors, rather just a kind request for help from your side in order to avoid any legal processes that may occur. I believe that you are aware that companies are obliged to protect their brands, especially ones that are a trademark, which Bajadera certainly is for my company.

I am very sorry that you interpreted my kind request as a legal threat, as there was no element of threat in my comment. Therefore I suggest a fresh start between us and once again kindly ask for your support in resolving this issue.

Best regards,

Ana Maria Merien 1985 (talk) 13:21, 15 February 2019 (UTC)

Merien 1985, I'm sure you are aware that the message left on your talk page was not made by me, but by another administrator known as SQL. Nevertheless, I would still strongly urge you to refrain from mentioning "legal processes" of any kind, as Wikipedia editors are all volunteers to the project, and issues with content are resolved through a process known as dispute resolution, which involves discussion and consensus rather than legal action. Initiating legal action to change content on Wikipedia is strongly discouraged, since doing so harms the collaborative environment that Wikipedia depends on for its content.
Now, the first message I left for you was in response to copyrighted material having been added to the Bajadera article, which Wikipedia cannot accept. Because all text on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license, any material that has been copied and pasted from another website with an incompatible license needs to be removed immediately (see Wikipedia:Copyright violations). My message was not about incorrect or misleading information in the article, but rather an important Wikipedia guideline that must be followed.
Secondly, if you work for the company involved, please be sure you review the guidelines on editing with a conflict of interest, and if you are being paid to contribute to Wikipedia, you must follow the paid editing guidelines. This is important, because most of the content written on Wikipedia are from volunteer editors who are unpaid and typically have no or little connection with the subject they are writing about. We require that all contributions made follow the three basic guidelines of verifiability (is it supported by reliable sources?), notability (is it notable enough to be mentioned on Wikipedia?), and neutral point of view (is it written neutrally like an encyclopedia that just gives the facts rather than sounding like an advertisement?).
Thirdly, since I'm not affiliated with the subject matter in question (as my edits to the articles in question were of a maintenance capacity to ensure that Wikipedia's policies were being followed), you may want to raise your issue on the talk pages of the articles in question. You may want to raise your issue on the WikiProject Business's talk page for editor input.
If you are new to Wikipedia, I encourage you to play The Wikipedia Adventure, a fun and interactive way of learning the basics on how to edit. If you have any additional questions, you can ask me or ask at the Teahouse, which is a place specifically tailored for newcomers and is frequented by a multitude of friendly users that can help you. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 13:45, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
