Tokyo Joe article

There is a modern telling of the story of a Japanese gangster by the name of "Tokyo Joe" that was made in 2008. In anticipation of an article on the film in the future, I differentiated the earlier 1949 production. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 12:21, 2 January 2010 (UTC).

Ukrainian scouting

Hi Chris,

Sorry for replying so late - I've been on some cycling trips with the wife, which brought me into areas with patchy to non-existent OSM coverage, so I've been working on OSM - reviewing GPS and video data etc.

Tomorrow's the last day of my holiday, so I'll see how far I get with the Ukrainian scout logos, but they all some of them look doable. Just keep bugging me and I'll get around to the Ruthenian logo, the YMCA logo and maybe later the Luhansk logo. --Slashme (talk) 16:20, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

I've done the truncated logo. It seem from their flag and the patches that I could see on LiveJournal that the "shiny look" of the jpg logo isn't part of the actual logo, but an embellishment, so I left it out. --Slashme (talk) 15:39, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Hey Chris, sorry for huge delays in your image requests. I've been extremely busy and had time to do only small things. Anyways, I came across File:Asociación de Guías de Cuba.png and was wondering what needs to be blue and orange. I have an SVG made ready to be colored. Also, I'm unable to transfer the images back to Wikipedia. You need a fair use rational and upload them here the same as you would with other images. --ZooFari 02:59, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Hawaii

Chris, this is not haw.wikipedia.org. In the same way when I go to the article on Moscow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow) the native Cyrillic (Москва) spelling is used once (for reference) and then Moscow is spelled in English for the rest of the article, this goes with neither every other article where the names of the location are spelled in the language that article is geared towards. By spelling Hawaii in HAWAI'IAN you are adding inconstancy to wikipedia and this goes against the style guide which requires wiki to be neutral. The State of Hawaii was incorporated into the USA with its English spelling, not its Hawai'ian. If you find this to be vandalizing I suggest you change the other 99% of en.wikipedia.org (to include any of Japan) and spell all cities, places, locations in their native language to be neutral. I have no problem if you wish to write the the same page in Hawai'ian on haw.wikipedia.org but as I said, this is en.wikipedia.org. Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_%28use_English%29, especially paragraph number four 81.187.27.117 (talk) 14:34, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

It wasn't the macronization I was objecting to, it was removal of a large portion of text related to a sitting president, thus of interest in a very small article. I removed the hagiography. You would have more clout for your changes if you register or sign in. IPs who remove chunks look like vandals and POV pushers. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 15:48, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

For this image, that was the best I could do. It is too low in quality for SVG, and I could only make the background opaque at my level of experience. Feel free to revert. --ZooFari 23:23, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Thank you! --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 03:38, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
As for this and this, what exactly do you want me to do? Vectorize? I noticed that the source comes from SVGs by other editors. --ZooFari 03:58, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
They exist as better SVGs on Commons, now that I have fixed the licensing, you can use the same licensing to copy them to the en:wiki. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 04:04, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

こんにちは (I hope I have that correct)

I recently noted that you added a fact tag to this article, specifically to the sentence claiming that this school is located in Chicago. I use citation tags constantly, normally to tag extraordinary claims or claims that appear to be dubious. This was the first time that I saw a citation request for information that (from my perspective) did not give the appearance to be dubious or controversial. However, I admit it is possible that I am misinterpreting what you are requesting. Could you please clarify what you would like to have confirmed by citation, and I will do my best to find a reliable source to confirm this.

"history merge"

I would have shown you the page about history merging, but I noticed that you aren't an admin, so you can't follow any of the instructions there. :-) It's only for fixing cut-and-paste moves, and articles that are merged (in the normal sense of the word) shouldn't be history merged, especially if there are lots of overlapping edits. When you're doing a straight merge of an article, it's sufficient to say "merging text to/from <article name>" in the edit summary. Having said that, I'd be happy to check out any of the pages you wanted history merged. Graham87 11:36, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Kintetsubuffalo! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 6 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 944 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Scouting and Guiding in small islands in Oceania

Hi Chris, it is good that you have moved the Tokelau and Niue articles to Scouting and Guiding in Tokelau and Scouting and Guiding on Niue. I have been looking at these myself and was going to do the move if I could find some information on Guides. These articles are totally unsourced. I have looked hard and I can find no source that Scouting and Guiding on these islands is run by the New Zealand associations. There is no mention on their web sites. I have no evidence that Scouting and Guiding even currently exists on these Islands. The same goes for other Islands. The Scouting and Guiding in Oceania template points Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Norfolk Island to Scouting and Guiding in Australia, but that article does not mention them. There is a mention on Scouts Australia and there should perhaps be one on Girl Guides Australia. However, I am fairly sure that there are no Scouts or Guides currently on these islands. Another case is Pitcairn Islands where the template points to The Scout Association but that article in this section does not explicitly mention Pitcairn Island. I am not sure again whether there are actually Scouts or Guides there. It is a worthy aim to comprehensively cover Scouting and Guiding everywhere, but we are floundering around with no sources. We need to address these issues. The hard line would be to delete all articles and links from the template in cases where we have no sources. If we can find poor sources that indicate the connection to Australia, New Zealand or UK, the links should point there, but the Tokelau and Niue articles should be redirects. Where is the best place to discuss these issues? Should I move this discussion to the Scouting Project talk page? --Bduke (Discussion) 21:10, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Chris, even if he did make them himself, that only makes them derivative works and still non-free. You can't sneak round copyright merely by copying a copyrighted item or image yourself (for obvious reasons). GG badge images

Could you point me in the direction of an image where I can see what the trefoil 'spine' looks like so I can replicate it better. The 3rd hand dodgy trace was why I thought it was a cross that hadn't been traced well. With the manual retrace I did it's far easier for me to change separate components now. Once I know what it looks like properly I'll be able to replicate it better. I've amended the file as you suggested, and in case you feel you have to step warily, no you don't :). I don't know the subject matter and you've only given a vague description of what you need so I have no problem incorporating changes. As an FYI, my usual method in the real world is to give a client, initially, my understanding of what they want, the process moves on from there with the end result rarely looking like my initial attempt. So I'm all for hearing your views on what it is you want. If I can do it I will, if I can't I'll tell you and if I disagree I'll tell you. What you should know is that, considering I'm a designer, I can't draw worth s**t! So usually I make do with cannibalising more creative artist's work and adding my basic art to make a composite. Anway, I've made the changes and made an alternative. Over to you :) --Fred the Oyster (talk) 11:42, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Are prefectures larger in cities in just scale, or in government/social activities? Or both? -CamT|C 04:07, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Prefectures can be thought of like US states, Canadian provinces or UK counties. Some are really large in area but underpopulated (Hokkaido, Shimane... like Montana or Saskatchewan, some are really small but densely populated (Kagawa, where I live, is the smallest prefecture but has a million people). Osaka, which is small but huge at once, serves its own city/prefecture functions. How do you mean scale? --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 12:27, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
I mean in terms of general landscape. Would a prefecture on average be larger than, say, New York City, or Jacksonville? -CamT|C 18:40, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

4th World Scout Jamboree Image tag issue

Chris, take a look now. I think I've fixed the issue with the purpose statement in the fair use rationale. Something changed in the software and the older form of the "log fur" tag is now not showing the 'purpose' statement. I replaced both the tags with one using what must be a newer design. If you think it needs two tags, you might use the new "log fur" tag I used as a guide and add another. I had three notices from Melesse on images I had uploaded a while ago and I found that replacing the tags fixed the "purposes" statement issue.Geoff Who, me? 12:36, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Oh yeah, I was promoted by the ANI threat raised about this, for your perusal. SGGH ping! 16:00, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
I read it, I understood it though it is a policy I disagree with, I got it, there was nothing to respond to. I don't have to answer or justify every whine that gets posted on my page, nor do I have to answer when a user gets butthurt and posts an ANI about me for a simple removal on my own talkpage. Anyone who comes here sees that at the top. Some users I just get a vibe about, and my hunches usually prove correct. I don't have the time, I'm busy doing other things, say for instance, writing articles, cleaning up after vandalism, working for a living, having a real life...
That being said, I've worked with you many times before, I like and respect you, so I do owe you a note explaining why I don't owe a note elsewhere. Threat is exactly right-ANI is an awful big stick to wave at such a small gnat, and that user should be embarrassed that their ego is so easily bruised. Ridiculous. Hi, just to let you know that I would like to remove Image:South_African_Scout_Association_2009.png which you uploaded for inclusion on the South African Scout Association page. I hope I can provide some context that will convince you to remove it. I was at one point closely involved in the discussions around the emblem (email me if you would like me to give specific details of my role - I prefer not to post them here). This logo was created by a website called ScoutWeb South Africa, which was the main Scouting website in South Africa at the time, but was initially not official, and had its own branding. Eventually the site became official and was rebranded with the official South African Scout Association logo. Since it was never the official (or even unofficial) national logo of the South African Scout Association, its relevance is questionable, and it also fails the fair use criteria for a Scout Association logo, which says "The image is placed in the infobox at the top of the article discussing South African Scout Association, a subject of public interest. The significance of the logo is to help the reader identify the organization, assure the readers that they have reached the right article containing critical commentary about the organization, and illustrate the organization's intended branding message in a way that words alone could not convey." None of that is accurate. I hope that this will be enough to persuade you? Zaian (talk) 20:07, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Chris. Thanks for helping to fight vandalism here at Wikipedia. However, I notice that several of the recent reports you have made at WP:AIV have been declined. Please be sure that there is recent activity from the IP and that they have been warned before you report them. Thank you. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:38, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

We are the Pink School

Hi Kintetsu. I noticed your edit on Sexy Battle Girls‎ (Surprise! That's on my watchlist!) I'm not so sure that "We are the Pink School" is not notable. I've come across the name quite a bit in my readings, but I haven't really looked into it to see what exactly it is. I think Jasper Sharp may have something to say about it in his book on Pink film. I'll check it, and see if I can establish a few notices of the event by reliable secondary sources. If so, hope you don't mind if I put it back in. (I doubt I'll be starting an article on it soon, but I suspect it may have "notability" enough to support one.) Regards. Dekkappai (talk) 16:48, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

No problem-- I'll check your concerns anyway. At least we'll get a citation explaining what it is... The caps thing-- that's a Japanese/English deal. I'll fix them when I restore it. Cheers! Dekkappai (talk) 17:15, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, there's another problem with it: Even without looking through the Sharp book I find enough, I think, to source "We Are the Pink School"'s notability. Problem is, I can't find a reliable mention of this film being shown at the event... The editor who put it in originally is Japanese and works for the US company which released the film on DVD here, so I don't doubt it is true. But I can't even see it mentioned on the DVD cover, so I guess we'll just leave it out for now. Even without the showing at the event, the film's "notability" will be easy enough to prove if it ever gets challenged... How has Takamatsu been treating you? Dekkappai (talk) 19:59, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Ah... Seoul, Pusan, Kyeongju, Buyeo, Kongju... ;-) I lived in Korea, but visited Japan when I could-- Tokyo, Fukuoka... Would love to live there some day, but that's out of the question at least until our son is grown. My wife's a very Japan-friendly Korean, so she's all for living there some day too. Maybe... Very glad to hear you're having a good experience there-- I remember recommending Gaijin Pot (or whatever it's called) to you when you were trying to get there. Regards. Dekkappai (talk) 00:32, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Right. Working at the eikaiwa (hagwon in Korea) is always risky, but it's a way to live in the counry. And I had a few bad experience with individual Koreans there, but I wouldn't judge my opinion of the whole country based on those-- I'd have to forget all the extreme kindness and generosity I encountered there too to do that... I find "Japan-friendly Korean" usually means a Korean who has actually met a Japanese person or two, as opposed to having just learned about them from the movies, history books, and assorted propaganda ;) College-aged idealists were the worst Japan-haters, the older people I met, who actually lived under the occupation had a more realistic "some good/some bad" attitude, and were always happy to practice Japanese with a foreigner... My wife's family had contact with Japan even when the relations were officially "closed". Dekkappai (talk) 02:41, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

DIRTY WAR IN ARGENTINA

You seem to be fair-minded and I hope I don't have a warped sense of history. But as far as I can see, the ultra-left launched a major bombing campaign in Argentina, that would not go unnoticed in today's media. I'll get your X taken away! *shakes fist*

Just kidding :-) Hey, I was wondering about the content from Aeon (eikaiwa) and GEOS (eikaiwa) that is duplicated across the Kiyoshi Aki and Tsuneo Kusunoki articles -- specifically, the paragraphs describing the history of AMVIC and the split into two companies. Do you think it would be more consistent to keep the text in the school articles, and then in the personal articles, replace it with one of those "See xxx" links? It would make it easier to keep it consistent when things change. Simon-in-sagamihara (talk) 01:28, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

This may be stolen, but it's still jolly good, and should be read out loud at least once before breakfast by all Wikipedians. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I particularly liked the line on humour (oh, alright, humor, if you insist!) which I think is just around where one of my earlier manifestations started to part company with the consensus and become a touch more D, B and K! Hi Chris, I've noticed a couple of your AIV reports on IP vandals where the IP has had no warnings in a long time, and also that you report them as IP only accounts. IP addresses can't be vandal-only accounts by definition, and don't get blocked as such, and the warnings have to be recent (the one you reported above was last warned April 6). Just for your into. Thanks, Amalthea 08:30, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Please discuss this at Template talk:The Fast and the Furious. Edit warring over it doesn't help, and it's not that the IP doesn't have a point with the character relationship. Question is whether a link in the navbox is undue. Amalthea 08:44, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
How do you expect the editing dispute on Better Luck Tomorrow will be resolved if neither of you is giving any reasoning in the edit summary? I agree with your revert personally, but a revert without a reason is not helpful (not to mention against WP:ROLLBACK). Amalthea 18:58, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Copyright problem: Scouts-in-Exteris

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Scouts-in-Exteris, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to be a copy from http://www.sossi.org/exile/scouts.htm, and therefore a copyright violation. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted. While we appreciate contributions, we must require all contributors to understand and comply with our copyright policy. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators are liable to be blocked from editing.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under allowance license, then you should do one of the following:

It may also be necessary for the text be modified to have an encyclopedic tone and to follow Wikipedia article layout. For more information on Wikipedia's policies, see Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

If you would like to begin working on a new version of the article you may do so at this temporary page. Leave a note at Talk:Scouts-in-Exteris saying you have done so and an administrator will move the new article into place once the issue is resolved. Thank you, and please feel welcome to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Happy editing! VernoWhitney (talk) 14:42, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

VernoWhitney, thank you for at least giving me the benefit of the doubt. I wrote the original article 4 1/2 years ago and 6000 miles away, when I was new to Wikipedia and going through stuff in my life... anyway, I am happy to rewrite the article, so that it is both my own wording and encyclopedic in tone. However, may I wait until this weekend? Work in Japan is strict and I do not have the time to devote to it right now. I am leaving the copyvio tags you placed, (however I would prefer you removed them in good faith, you can take out the offending text too, I copied it). I have undone the watering down of intentional wording by Yoenit, and I stand by it. It is not POV to point to the specific reasons those communities went into exile. You can't talk about the Cold War without going into Communism's treatment of their peoples, any more than you can have an article about terrorism without talking about the root causes that drives people to act thus. Nothing happens in a vacuum, and I won't have articles sanitized for modern sensibilities when the issues are swept under the rug.
Please do consider removing both the tags and the offending text, I would prefer to begin working on a new version of the article at this temporary page when I can give it full attention, and not have a big black box sitting in the middle of it. I'm a positive contributor, please assume good faith, just remove the copyvio text and I will rewrite it this weekend. It is Thursday morning 2 am, and I can't get to it for a few days yet, my workweek is different than others. Thanks again for the good faith. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:11, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
I didn't intend to accuse you of anything but good faith and I apologize if you took it that way. I have no problem removing the blanked portion and the text. An admin will follow-up and review the temp page in about a week and make sure that it is not still a close paraphrase of the source before readding the text to the article. If you're done with the rewrite earlier, just make a note at Talk:Scouts-in-Exteris and I should see it as I have the page watch-listed. Cheers. VernoWhitney (talk) 17:19, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Seems to be the same set of IP's that are causing trouble. Because it is fairly long-term, and because no good contributions came from that range anyway i blocked 93.35.240.0/20 and 93.35.224.0/20 (8182 IP's in total) for the next two weeks. Perhaps being incapable to edit everywhere will solve the issue with this vandal. Assistance Requested with Article in Workspace

Hi Chris,

Thanks so much for making the workspace for me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Action_grrl/workshop/The_Gymnast

I have been building the article towards incubation, with a finishing touch of adding the movie poster yesterday. Then I planned to ask for your advice, input and editing to advance it towards publishing though the incubation process.

I used the fair-use argument and template for the movie poster image, which I learned from a fellow editor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:MichaelQSchmidt#Requst_assistance_with_image_discussion_on_free-use I asked for his assistance in resolving the fair-use issue.

With help, I am trying to navigate the fair-use policies with the movie poster: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Action_grrl#Replaceable_fair_use_File:The_Gymnast_movie_poster.jpg

Once the image issue is resolved, I hope to enlist your assistance on moving the article to incubation. :)

Thanks so much!

block-evading sockpuppet

You reported 90.195.133.12 at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism, with the comment "yet another block-evading sockpuppet-how do I apply for a rangeblock?" Unfortunately this IP address is quite a distance away from the others, and a range block big enough to catch them all would hit over a million IP addresses, which would not be acceptable. I have placed a range block on a smaller range, which will catch most of the IPs used, and individually blocked 90.195.133.12. I have also semi-protected Hattori Hanzō, which is where most of the disruptive editing has taken place. Hello Kitty mindreading

I wanted to give a generic and amusingly-timed thanks for splitting off the television/anime series from the main article. Only a few days ago I was thinking the exact same thing as the one article was incredibly wide-ranged and precedent gives separate articles... came on this evening and it's the first thing I notice. The actual article can grow now... though the video games list is getting lengthy, I'm not so certain for precedent on that. This is a rather unique and wide-ranging topic, I suppose. Your "POW" pic from ANI discussion

The picture is 99% certainly faked. The Red Army (if that's what he is) officer is the wrong perspective (wrong height), and a different contrast to the rest of the shot - also higher resolution, so clearer. To a huge degree of certainty he is "dropped in" - just the unnatural way he fits the background says so. Interestingly, the right hand section of the pile of guns, and various areas of the "matting" also seem bogus. I'd say the right hand gun pile section could possibly even be from the same shot the officer came from, but that's guesswork. What's certain to a huge degree is that there is alteration there, too. There are a lot of very obvious signs of alteration on the matting, near the POW queue. The very existence in that shot of the huge matting rectangle has probably been used to hide a multitude of sins. However, it is important to note that this could be how the picture was originally published, since there is no access to the source. There's no way to say when it was altered, but there is no doubt it was, to my mind. If pushed, I'd say the alterations look digital, which would make it more recent - but that bit is an opinion only.  Begoontalk 13:24, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the clarification there. I've rangeblocked 90.201.243.0/24 (i.e 90.201.243.*), there are quite a few instances in the last month or so of this same individual swapping between that range. As there's no other recent activity I've done it for a month, let me know if he reappears from another range or starts again after that. Thanks - and as I said previously, I'd probably suggest using SPI rather than AIV next time as it makes it easier to spot the need for a rangeblock. ~ mazca talk 10:56, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

I know what you mean - I think it's not helped by the fact that a lot of internet providers these days use massive ranges across all their customers. So if there's one disruptive user, we would theoretically have to rangeblock about six blocks of 65,536 IP addresses to stop them, inconveniencing countless others. Fortunately this guy seems to be stuck on a very narrow range of ~256 addresses that nobody else seems to edit from! ~ mazca talk 11:01, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Playa Mayabeque

Hello

Apparently we do not understand about the reference article.

It is not my intention to eliminate part of the article or the headline as you raised me on the record, on the contrary, I would like better. If you see the talk page of the article, you will notice that I comment on it (for parts) on issues in the contents, trying to explain that the paper is about the "Playa Mayabeque" Scouts of Cuba are part of the story that article. You reverted the article so quickly that not even notice that below I talk on the subject of Cuba Scouts even have placed references to the topic which did not exist.

While waiting for your attention. Best regards --Rogeliowar (talk) 11:13, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Please review the request page and the guide to mediation requests and then indicate in the "party agreement" section whether you would agree to participate. Discussion relating to the mediation request welcome at the case talk page.

Ok I saw the article. In my opinion, the article is about Playa Mayabeque not the Mayabeque National Camp School. You can make the National Park School as a subsection of the main article or make it as a seperate article. But the article is about the entire beach not a section of a river where the camp once stood. Callelinea (talk) 20:41, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Your mail

Thanks for the mail.

No, just felt very jaded and disillusioned in general, and then a couple of remarks/actions rubbed me up the wrong way, so I did a little stomp.

On reflection, and after reading some messages I got, I decided that retiring was over the top, and a silly reaction, so I'm going to just cut back a bit on the time I spend here instead, and see how that goes. After all, where would be the fun in anonymity if we couldn't stomp off in a silly tantrum, because we got worked up about what was said/done on a website, then come back after some sleep feeling we made some sort of point?

It's all good, really... :-)  Begoontalk 02:50, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Berber people article

Hi Chris,

I noticed you're probably the most active member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Berbers still editing. I was hoping to get your views on an issue at Talk:Berber people#More arbitrary image deletions by Ekarfi13. Essentially Ekarfi13 has been deleting images of a of various individuals, but his edit summaries make no sense, and I can't get him to engage on the Talk: page. He's now stopped deleting two images, but he's still deleting a third. He must have deleted these images at least 15 times over the past month and a half, but he refuses to discuss why: in that time he hasn't made a single Talk: page comment, despite me opening an RFC, and continually asking him to do so. Would you be willing to take a look? Jayjg (talk) 21:05, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Romanization for words of English origin

On the MOS:JP talk page, a discussion has been started about including or not including romanizations for words of English origin, such as Fainaru Fantajī in Final Fantasy (ファイナルファンタジー, Fainaru Fantajī) (for the sake of simplicity, I called this case "words of English origin", more information on semantics here).

Over the course of a month, it has become apparent that both the parties proposing to include or not include those romanizations cannot be convinced by the arguments or guidelines brought up by the other side. Therefore, a compromise is trying to be found that will satisfy both parties. One suggestion on a compromise has been given already, but it has not found unanimous agreement, so additional compromises are encouraged to be suggested.

One universally accepted point was to bring more users from the affected projects in to help achieve consensus, and you were one of those selected in the process.

What this invitation is:

  • You should give feedback on the first suggested compromise and are highly encouraged to provide other solutions.

What this invitation is not:

  • This is not a vote on including or excluding such romanizations.
  • This is not a vote on compromises either.

It would be highly appreciated if you came over to the MOS:JP talk page and helped find a solution. Thank you in advance. Prime Blue (talk) 11:37, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Flag of Japan

Hello.

You is the one of users with the largest number of editions in the article of Flag of Japan. In the Portuguese Wikipedia the article of Flag of Japan is the same, except that in Portuguese. I work in creat articles for "to blue" the article in Portuguese Wikipedia. And I realized that both articles in both languages are dead links. And earnestly ask, is not there a way to recover the dead links or substitute another source? In the Internet Archive failed, In this sites Category:Web archives could be good? I believe that the best way would be to find another source.

Thank you for your attention. Sorry my bad English. Bruno Ishiai (talk) 22:36, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Template substitution

Hey Chris,

Just a friendly reminder that for certain user templates (e.g. {{WelcomeMenu}}, {{uw-spam}}, templates meant to welcome/warn users) you're supposed to substitute them. E.g., instead of writing {{WelcomeMenu}}, write {{subst:WelcomeMenu}}. Otherwise, the user talk page will look a little strange :-). I fixed a couple user talk pages where I happened to see that, but I'm not creepy enough to root through your edit history and it's not really important enough to expect you to do so either. I realize you've been here a lot longer than I have, so you probably knew about substing those templates before I did. Hey, we're human. BTW - I like your talk page guidelines; in fact, feel free to delete this very notice if it is as redundant as I fear :-) Thank you,

-- Joren (talk) 18:23, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Actually, I didn't know that, thank you for pointing that out. I knew you could substitute some templates, but not that one. I thought it looked a little strange. That should be nested in, but ah, well. Thanks for the heads up and for the kindness!--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 01:56, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Newbie biting

As per this discussion it would be great if you could be nicer to newbies and not bite them. Both examples given were indeed incorrect, and your reverts are correct, but you do not explain why to the newbies who have no idea their edits is against policy. You need to explain why you reverted their edits, not just call them vandalism, when that obviously is not the case.

Thanks. --OpenFuture (talk) 06:17, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Re:May I pick your brain...

Of course- what can I help you with? J Milburn (talk) 11:24, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

I've replied there. Basically, they count as non-free. We may be able to use some of them under our NFCC. J Milburn (talk) 19:31, 15 August 2010 (UTC)

If they are in the public domain, you should replace {{non-free Scout logo}} with the appropriate public domain tag, providing whatever evidence you can that they are PD. Replacing the non-free use rationale with {{information}} would also be a lot cleaner. This stops us ending up with the rather weird situation at, for instance, File:Asociación de Scouts de Cuba 1940s.svg, where it is listed as public domain and non-free. It may also be worth tagging the images so they can be moved to Commons. This is all very much a worthwhile thing to do. J Milburn (talk) 09:13, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

{{Non-free fair use in}} may be appropriate. Don't forget the rationale. J Milburn (talk) 09:20, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, that is, if it's non-free. I could take a better look if you showed me the picture in question? J Milburn (talk) 09:22, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
That particular subject is still alive; generally, that sets of alarm bells about the legitimacy of any non-free use claim (as a new picture could be taken). The fact that there is a sourced mention in the article about his lack of public appearances is significant, but I see that there are actually a good few images of him about. There may be a US-gov one buried somewhere. (Also note that using an image from a source like Getty is generally a massive no-no- an image in which there is little commercial interest is the best choice if we have to go the non-free route.) Before using this image, do your best to locate/request a free one, if at all possible. J Milburn (talk) 09:40, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
That's an improvement. For an image like this, I'd want to see a more explicit source- who does the image belong to? Other than that, you could very reasonably be challenged on replaceability grounds. J Milburn (talk) 09:50, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

When you remove {{Non-free Scout logo}}, you are also removing the category. Please place those images into some category so that we don't loose them. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 12:10, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

You also need to change the rationale from non-free. And they should be marked for move to Commons. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 12:12, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Nice to hear from you! Okay, I will find a good category. Some are ready to move to Commons, some should be improved before we kick them out of the nest. I will make sure we don't lose them, and they do us proud.
Also, you have several ZHP images marked ZHR. They are separate competing orgs, just the name is close in Polish. They should all be ZHP.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 13:19, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello Kintetsubuffalo. I've come across your tagging of this page and would like to remind you that {{notenglish}} should really only be used for articles in the article namespace. If you would like to have it translated, please list the page at the "Cleanup" section at WP:PNT with a short explanation. It has to go there because the "Pages for consideration" section is reserved for articles, and pages listed there have a deadline of 14 days. If you have more questions about translations, please ask them here, I'll watch your page. Regards, De728631 (talk) 20:43, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

I've gone ahead now and translated the titles and quotations on that page; but only because I remembered to have look at it, not because it was marked at "Pages needing translation". The "notenglish" template does not automatically list the page at WP:PNT, that's why there is an instruction on the template tag. You have to do that yourself after tagging a page. That said, good luck with future Pfadfinder articles. De728631 (talk) 19:25, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

It does not look like a Ukrainian COA. It looks one of the towns of the former Ryazan vice-royalty, Russia - see commons:Category:Coats_of_arms_of_cities_and_villages_of_Ryazan_Region. The towns of the southern frontier of the former governorate are now not in Ryazan Oblast but in Lipetsk Oblast, Voronezh Oblast etc. and some were abandoned or downgraded to villages. The upper half (Ryazan ) is easily identifiable, although the sword is curved, not straight as it should be (there are two options for this part - either sword, sheath and hat in upper half, or just the hat in a small escutcheon like here). Bottom half - which identifies the town - ??? East of Borschov 19:15, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Still it's improper to remove images during a deletion discussion, trying to shoehorn the answer they wanted by forcing POV changes here. That should have been considered-contentious editors brought the fight over from Commons, I didn't, I was fighting bad removals. Anyway how much time is left on this turkey? I don't want to jump the gun and get in more trouble than I already don't need.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 08:01, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
Your block is for 24 hours. In a future situation like this, after you have reverted twice, notify the administrators noticeboard, and then leave it be. If you understand that edit warring about that image isn't the best way to deal with this type of situation, and wont re-instate that image again, you can be unblocked now. "Restored" article?

Curious as to your decision to restore the "List of foreign place names in Japanese" but having it as part of your sandbox. If my memory serves me, after I had started the article, a decision was made that it would be better for this type of article to be housed at Wiktionary instead of at Wikipedia, it was deleted in Wikipedia, but also not created in Wiktionary. Since its deletion, the Japanese article has been beefed up, as have the German article. CJLippert (talk) 00:36, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

I'm not planning to use it "as-is", I need the information from it for a local placename etymology article. So nice for everyone to question me on this undelete request.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:42, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
As the article was never transwiki'd to Wiktionary, if you know how do it (as I don't), would you mind doing that while you have the page there with you? CJLippert (talk) 12:15, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
I don't know how to do it either.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 02:40, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

So often with these images, it's very hard to tell. I'd say there's about a fiffty-fifty chance it's PD, but it's gonna be hard to prove. We really need to know who the original author is, or, failing that, when/where it was first published. The current "source" is not so useful in that regard. I've recently discovered the pictures of the Hitlerjugend visiting the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo that you've uploaded. So far I've hastily implemented one of them in the article, but I'd like to ask you, if you could elaborate on that visit (and/or similar ones during these years) in a short paragraph at approximately the place the image sits now. Marxist MIR and FPMR guerrilla groups

I wonder if you can help with the Spanish page dealing with the Marxist MIR and FPMR guerrilla groups in Chile in the 70s and 80s: [[4]] . There are two individuals bent on sweeping their crimes under the carpet. I don't think this is fair, for I have provided reliable sources. There are many lies propagated by the left, like the belief held by many ill informed Chileans, that 200,000 to 1 million were exiled and the vast majority of the armed forces personnel, that appear in their roll of honour, were in fact killed at the hands of their superiors. This is an insult to their families. In reality their were a handful (about a dozen) that were court-martialled and shot, although over a hundred were jailed or exiled. I strive to separate fact from fiction, but instead get penalized for it.--Breitkopf (talk) 23:08, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

The article Akira Suzuki (media) has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Epbr123 (talk) 17:38, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

Scouting & Asia...

While I have interests in both scouting and Asia (I was a scout, am an Alpha Phi Omega historian, lived in Taiwan for two years and Alpha Phi Omega also exists in the Philippines), the area where I am most comfortable is filling in tables of events like National Fraternity Conventions and Jamborees. The information on jamborees for the Interamerican Zone seems fairly complete, to the point where I wonder if User:Inauditous got the rest from a single site (which should be referenced). BTW, the phrase "Even today, the Interamerican Region exists more for the benefit of countries south of the Rio Grande, as evidenced by the website being only in Spanish; consequently, the United States and Canada do not participate as vigorously in regional activities as do other national organizations around the world." seems inappropriate for wikipedia.Naraht (talk) 18:28, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

It could be written better, but it is factual. The other regions function as a whole (Jp, SK, ROC, Ph, Indo seem to be the big dogs, but even Iran and Kiribati have a say). BSA makes sense to me, kind of like the US at the UN, it pretty much does what it wants, size and power-but then Indonesia is so much bigger and they play ball. Canada I can't explain, but they aren't as active in the Region as other countries. Have you suggestions?
Ps-how was Taiwan? Everyone suggests to go there, it's friendly but humid, apparently.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 18:43, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
It may be factual, but it is completely unreferenced, even the website isn't identified. There are both English and French speaking islands in the Caribbean, I wonder if they are equally excluded. Unless it is referenced, I think it should be deleted. BTW,I don't know if Iran still is a member of the Asia Pacific, I know their scouts were nuked after the Revolution.
I liked Taiwan, definitely humid. It is about half way between Miami and Havana in Latitude I think. It has been 20 years since I was there...Naraht (talk) 01:31, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Re: Scouting in Yugoslavia

No problem. This made more sense to me because the SCG page now described a comparatively minor part of the complete history. The main question now is how much of the SCG page was generic, i.e. how much of it also applied in the 1950-1991 period too, not just 1995-2006. Those parts should be moved to a higher header level. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 20:05, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. Well, it'll be pretty straightforward to work on this for someone who actually knows anything about these guys. I have no idea about scouting, I just did this to help clear out the obsolete category Category:Organizations based in Serbia and Montenegro :) --Joy [shallot] (talk) 20:11, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

You deserve a more complete explanation.

When I first starting deleting PRODs, I checked to make sure that the original author was notified (some exceptions, e.g. original author not active). However, when I ran across my first PROD with no notification, and contacted the editor, I was informed that notifying was encouraged but not required. I thought we should notify, so I attempted to tighten up the language here, but as you can see, I failed to persuade.

That left me with limited options. I couldn't insist that notification occur, and if I just abandoned those without notification, someone else might come along and delete without adding the notification. I adopted my own personal rule. If I saw a PROD where I thought notification was warranted, I would do the notification myself before the deletion. To be sure, only seconds before, so it doesn't provide enough time to contest the deletion, but it does provide notification so the author could request userfication or other remedies. If you have a better approach, I'm all ears.

(As an aside, kudos on the scouting work you do. One of my regrets in life is that I stopped at Life, but I was part of an active scouting family.)--SPhilbrickT 12:47, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for adding a fair use rationale to this image. Are you sure that this organization really exists? I couldn't find anything except the ebay offer by a spanish ebay trader. It could be a scam; the fleur-de-lis was taken from Wikipedia. Is there any other proof of the existence of these groups? --jergen (talk) 21:21, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

That the fleur-de-lis was taken from Wikipedia is what drew my attention to it-somebody does read us! ;) It is too elaborate to be a hoax, with the attention to detail; in addition, I have known that seller for 18 years, he's (or was) head of the International Badgers Club Spanish Tejones, so while I don't have proof, I am taking it on good faith. Mostly I was impressed that someone chose to use our design.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 00:22, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
Could you ask the seller for further informations? An organization with such elaborate ranks should have some written-down rules for advancement or some bylaws. And the seller should have some contact closer to the organization.
I didn't bring his contact info with me to Japan-I will do some searching for it.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 23:23, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
BTW, the depiction of Sleipnir on the "Knight of Odin" badge is not correct, the designer included some ornaments between the legs, that aren't part of the horse, but are shown on the Tjängvide image stone. The Valknut was taken from File:Valknut-Symbol-triquetra.svg and the Valkyrie from File:Valkyrie.jpg. I'm not really convinced that a real-world organization practicising Asatru would take most of its symbols from Wikipedia or Commons.
Not so fast-anybody practicing that religion might know those symbols-I would argue the triangles and the little gold effigy one you pointed me to could be gotten from any source. You know way more about the religion than I do-I didn't even know what to call some of those, but it doesn't follow they got those here-a Google search would do.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 23:23, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
It's also unclear how there should be enough members in Sweden to form a Scout unit; the largest group in Sweden, Swedish Asatru Assembly, has about 300 members all over the country; there is no local structure for Malmö [5], but one comprising the whole south of Sweden. The Norwegian no:Foreningen Forn Sed - the largest organization in the country - has only 100 members, mostly in Oslo and Trondheim [6]; how can they run a unit in Stavanger?
That is a good series of questions and I appreciate your legwork on this. It could also be that there are believers who are not registered with a church or org-I am that way (different religion though), so probably I am not counted as a member.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 23:23, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
And why is there a separate organization in the US with BSA accepting Asatru units (eg former Troop 1239; Great Salt Lake Council)? --jergen (talk) 09:33, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
That's a question for Egel-that was not information I had, and I don't know if that counts as Scouting.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 08:20, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
Do you have a source for the Salt Lake troop? That would be worthwhile to add to the article.
I'll do my best, thanks for your hard work!--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 23:23, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

ShouldBePNG on photographs

Hi, Kintetsubuffalo. I see you've placed a {{ShouldBePNG}} tag several times on the file description pages for File:Vietnamese Scout Association LangBian Dalat.jpg and File:Union of Burma Boy Scouts campout.jpg. I don't understand why you think this is a good idea:

  1. These are photographs, for which the JPEG format is the most appropriate choice; see Wikipedia:Image use policy#Format.
  2. It is true that the PNG format provides lossless compression, but for photographs a bit of lossiness in compression is acceptable because it is unnoticeable by the human eye (unless the compression is too high, in which case the {{Overcompressed JPEG}} tag would be appropriate).
  3. The compression algorithm used by the PNG format, while lossless, performs much more poorly on photographic images than does the JPEG compression algorithm, so a PNG version of a photograph is almost always many times larger than a JPEG version.
  4. Moreover, in the case of File:Vietnamese Scout Association LangBian Dalat.jpg, I am sure that the original file, created by a digital camera, was saved in the JPEG format (and is perhaps even the exact file that was uploaded here), so the only way we could get a PNG version of that image is to directly convert a JPEG version to PNG—but the compression artifacts from the original JPEG compression will still be there (PNG compression is lossless, but the information was lost before the PNG compression algorithm ever saw it; the PNG image will be identical to the JPEG image, pixel for pixel, including the JPEG compression artifacts), so we haven't gained anything in image quality, and the resulting file size will be many times greater.

I am going to remove the {{ShouldBePNG}} tag again from these images. If you still feel that the tag should be there, please explain why, because I can see no reason for it. —Bkell (talk) 00:25, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
