WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of several of Godot13's quality submissions during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

Semi 2 week page protection

Hi

I had requested for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prannoy_Roy to be protected because someone kept changing the religion of Prannoy Roy from Hindu to Christian.

He is actually a Hindu. While you did block edits but it has been blocked with his Religion set as "Christian" in the Info box. Can you please change it to Hindu and then block it?

Regarding protection templates to unprotected pages

Thank you for your feedback. But I want to know why can't a normal user protect page if it is frequently affected by vandalism? I knthat more vandalism will be done but can't it be given to users who have completed required criteria in order to the tasks of administrators. Calstar -> CALSTAR

Hello! I wanted to see if you (as an admin) could help me with a page move. Calstar needs to be moved to CALSTAR (which currently redirects to Calstar and thus I cannot perform the move]]). The reason for this is that CALSTAR is an acronym for California Shock Trauma Air Rescue. It would be like Calling United States Navy SEALs, United States Navy Seals. Unprotection request for Template:2015 Allsvenskan table

Hi,

Yesterday you fully protected Template:2015 Allsvenskan table during an content dispute. The case has ben discussed at the article talkpage Template talk:2015 Allsvenskan table#Table position and one of the source has now changed so both source say the same thing. I believe there should be no issues if the template got unprotected and with new set of matches tomorrow (within 20hours from now) the table will change and there will be no discussion then and it also needs to be updated tomorrow. WikiCup 2015 May newsletter

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Why small=yes?

In your edit of 11:04, 22 April 2015 of Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma, you added {{pp-pc1|expiry=22 May 2015|small=yes}} at the top. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, and happy to help. It's a Twinkle thing - it's simply a box that's checked by default when I pull up the box to protect a page in Twinkle. I always iconify the tag unless I'm doing a full lock for an edit war. Since AFAIK none of the other protection tags are icons by default, it's easier to keep the box checked by default, though I don't recall if that's my custom setting or Twinkle's own default setting. I like it, though. Twinkle really rocks for page protection because it makes both the protection edit and the tag edit at the same time for us; otherwise we'd have to lock the page and then add the template manually. Before you ask - no, we can't use Twinkle to block, but we can use it to put the blocking notice on the user talk page. The blocking notices are in the admin package for Twinkle. Thanks for semi-protecting the Template:Terrorism in Australia as per the discussion on AN/I. However, the article at the point you protected it was lasted edited by the edit-warring IP address. Since I'm auto-confirmed I can undo their edit back to the status quo, but I'm involved in the content dispute myself so I don't want to do that simply because I have the power to do so. Hello KrakatoaKatie, Thank you for the note. I agree that Harassment should not be tolerated anywhere. I am a little confused though. Baseball Bugs edits anothers comments, I put them back (my first edit). I go to an admin that was on the same page and ask for help (my second and third edit), Baseball Bugs, who you can see has been removing another editors (Rambling Mans) comments and is corrected by others...he finally restores text that Rambling Man removed. Actually, it is possible to semi-protect pages from creation

I noticed your reply at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/Rolling archive#Farhan khan, where you said that "we can't semi-protect articles from creation...it's either a full lock or nothing". Actually, you're wrong; it is indeed possible to make a page so that it can be created by autoconfirmed users but not by new users. See East wind condos for an example. Poor choice of words on my part. Yes, it's possible, but it's also pointless. The account which created that article is >48 hours away from being autoconfirmed. It's a very low barrier, so low as to be nearly nonexistent. I don't care _who_ recreates an A7 article. I want to prevent its recreation by anyone, autoconfirmed or not. But that's me. Your protection of Toitures Du St Laurent Ltd

I don't think that simply create-protecting the page was a sufficient action, given that the socks involved have been using different page titles to circumvent the salts (ex. Toitures Du St Laurent). It may be better to add that to the title blacklist.

However, they might try to circumvent that too (ex. Toitures), so it's probably better to add it as an edit filter so that it checks the page content, not just the title. Gparyani (talk) 17:51, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

About the decline of Template:Db-g7 for protection

Hiya, I just wanted to clarify that I meant to put "Template Protection" instead of "Full Protection" but I clicked the wrong button. As for it being only transcluded onto 30odd pages, wouldn't that be because it's a speedy deletion template and most articles that get it put on will either be deleted or the tag removed? --Anarchyte 10:09, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

@Anarchyte:: That's correct. It also has lots of admin eyes on it. Category:Candidates for speedy deletion is constantly monitored, even though it often has a backlog, and any problems with this template would be swiftly fixed without damage to the encyclopedia.
