Years in Islam

Hey, I notice that Category:1870 in Islam and up, which you created, are nearly empty. Are you still planning to populate these categories? Marcocapelle (talk) 05:03, 26 April 2017 (UTC)

They were created as part of red-link clearance, so I've no specific plans for them myself. However that's the kind of category which has obvious potential for further development, so it's no WP:SMALLCAT - it's just that we're generally weak on areas like that compared to Pokemon or whatever. I wouldn't argue too hard against combining them into decades but given the potential for expansion I think it would be a mistake for them to be deleted altogether.Le Deluge (talk) 13:02, 28 April 2017 (UTC)
Ok, I cut the CfD nomination at 1979 because there is clearly more potential since the Iranian Revolution. Before then, not just the coverage is weak, there weren't simply any notable events in Islam (except for building mosques). There isn't any central religious institute in Islam that could bring up issues like there is in Catholicism, nor was Islam characterized by a continuous establishment of new denominations like in Protestantism. Huh? The History of Islam started in 1979? Honestly, I don't understand your logic there. It's complicated because Islam is more of a political force than Christianity, but the history includes everything from the Crusades and the Spread of Islam to Category:Islamic literature, Category:Islamic art and the Timeline of science and engineering in the Islamic world, notably Science in the medieval Islamic world. To be hoenst, just the fact that you thinkk there are few Islamic schools and branches in comparison to Christianity makes me think that you don't really understand this area well enough to make the call. I'll admit that I'm now a lot more fussy about single year categories than I was back when I created these ones, so I wouldn't fight too hard about an upmerge to decades, but you're absolutely wrong to think that Islamic history started in 1979.Le Deluge (talk) 09:32, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
That's a misunderstanding. The reason that I cut it at 1979 is just pragmatic, because Islam has become a better covered topic in the western world after 1979 and that's visible in an increased number of en:wiki articles referring to events in Islam after 1979. That may be true of some parts of the Western world, like the US - but France and Britain didn't suddenly discover the Middle East in 1979; they have had a deep strategic interest in the Muslim world since at least the construction of the Suez Canal, and arguably before that; and obviously the history of Spain and Islam are intimately intertwined since 711. There was also immigration and conversion - Britain's first mosque was founded in 1887. It's a bit like saying that Indonesia was of no interest to the West until Suharto came to power - that's probably true for much of the West but one Western country had a very deep interest in Indonesia, both economically and culturally. A lot of the sources may be in Dutch, but there's certainly no shortage of them and no reason not to have pre-1967 categories for Indonesian history. Google Books has 112k hits for Islam history just from the 19th century including several dedicated history books - this is a problem of poor Wikipedia coverage, not a lack of sources. I don't see why Islam can't have a similar history hierarchy to a major country - there's certainly the potential to have year categories back to 1800 and decade/century categories before then (but I'd also nuke about 80% of existing year categories before 1800 in other hierarchies, we've got too many of them in general). Initially I'd suggest having year categories going back to the end of the Ottoman Empire (call it 1918 to align with other cats) and decades before that but there's definitely scope for year cats going back some way before then.Le Deluge (talk) 13:44, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

It was just coincidence that Wikipedia:Database reports/Categories categorized in red-linked categories/1 had just run and some of the ones that ended up on that were really obvious. I guess you could use the Quarry equivalent and maybe add rev_user_text to the SELECT so that you can see the ones where you were the last editor.Le Deluge (talk) 15:03, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

Quarry allows you to do direct queries on the database - I'm not sure if you can set my query running directly or whether you'd have to copy and paste the code. On further examination, the last editor data comes from a different table (revision), so it's a bit mroe complicated to include that field in the output - not got time to do it now, I'll put it on the list. If you can't get Quarry running then Special:WantedCategories runs a bit more frequently (every 3 days-ish) than the above database report and should have most of them as well.Le Deluge (talk) 09:57, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Template:Navseasoncats

@S.A. Julio: Yep, it's the number one thing on the roadmap! Followed by some cleverness to automatically switch to 4-year mode when it sees eg Olympics or Paralympics in the cat name. Category:Lorde

I was in the process of creating it but didn't realize it was protected from recreation. I reached out to the admin who added the protection but it's been a few days now. I wasn't going to revert my own moves just to add the category again when it was created. Per WP:REDNOT, a category can be created with a redlink if the intention is to create it, which it definitely was my intention. --StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 16:03, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Category move question

Hi Le Deluge, the question asked if a bot was available to rename the categories after a category had been changed, not on what the process for requesting a category was changed was. My response to the question asked still seems correct. If they had requested how to change the name of a category then I would have answered that question. Claiming someone is giving a wrong answer to a question that wasn't asked isn't overly helpful. Amortias (T)(C) 10:49, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

@Amortias: I've got a lot of respect fo the work you help-stalkers do, but this was a case where you had to read between the lines a little bit. The editor had a problem (how to update categories after a corporate name change) but didn't know how to express that problem. So they tried to express it as best they could - but by asking the wrong question. You answered that question in the literal sense, but didn't solve their problem. Just a hint of out-of-process category renames should have set klaxons blaring in your mind that this was something to do with CfD or speedy. I'm sorry if I came across as harsh, but I spend my Wikitime sorting out the mistakes people have made with categories and I reacted badly to the suggestion that an out-of-process rename was being "officially" condoned, which is how it would have appeared to the editor in question. Anyway, it's all sorted now - although how annoying is that centred Talk page, I've never seen that before.... <g> Le Deluge (talk) 11:11, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
