User:Le Deluge/categories

Hello! I came across User:Le Deluge/categories and just wanted to ask if you think this 4-year-old list still has value, or if perhaps you would be willing to delete it. It duplicates Special:WantedCategories to some degree, and most of the categories it links to currently exist, are empty, or have been deleted. The last scenario is the one that concerns me slightly, just in terms of so many redlinks potentially encouraging recreation of categories that were deleted at WP:CFD. I will defer to whatever you choose to do, of course, but just thought I would mention it to you. Cheers, -- Black Falcon (talk) 22:27, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

Thanks

For adding the deletion tag on the category. I've never "emptied" a category before (there was only one misplaced item in it) and didn't know the procedure. Thanks again. Randy Kryn (talk) 23:45, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

What's your problem, mate?

Sometimes it is harder to assume good faith than others, and I must admit I appear to be experiencing one of those periods at the moment as regards your recent edits. Can you explain why you first of all deleted the category? I would like to know your reasoning for each item why you considered it did not qualify as a spectacle. Thank you. Leutha (talk) 10:10, 19 March 2018 (UTC)

@Leutha: Where to begin? Probably with you reading WP:CATEGORIZATION. It's not a question of whether they are a spectacle or not, it's whether it's an appropriate category. It fails on a very narrow technical ground from the start, as category names are always plurals (so Category:Churches and Category:French people rather than "Church" and "French person") - which immediately runs into problems in this case as there's an ambiguity with the things you read with. But more generally - it's a very vague concept, and you end up lumping together things which aren't natural bedfellows, when they are probably best categorised with more specific categories. The category system isn't a system of metatags, trying to describe every aspect of an article, it's more like a card index in a library. So would you search for the London 2012 opening ceremony under "Olympic Opening Ceremonies" or "Spectacles"? If you maybe spend more time moving around the category hierarchy rather than just looking at it as metatags on an article, you'll get a better feel for that kind of thing. There's a bit of an art to categorisation, the ideal category is maybe 30-200 members so is neither too vague nor a WP:SMALLCAT; conversely ideally an article only wants 2-5 categories. That's not to say some articles have many more, but it's kinda overkill.
To be honest, the category system is pretty comprehensive by now, to the extent that if you're unfamiliar with it you should be a bit cautious about creating new ones unless it's continuing an existing year series (Category:1362 books as part of Category:Books by year) or country series (eg Category:Electric power in Jamaica based on other members of Category:Electric power by country). It's useful to use WP:HOTCAT to scan for possible categories that might have slightly different phrasing to the one you're contemplating, and also just have a look around the nearby hierarchy. If nothing else, you need to do that anyway to identify possible categories with which to categorise the category - not only is it important in its own right to plug a new category into the hierarchy to allow people to find it and allow bot maintenance, but it makes you think about how it works as a category. Does that make sense? Le Deluge (talk) 13:14, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your response. A simple apology would have sufficed, but your the condescending tone fails to hide the fact that you have not responded to the central issue: that you removed items from a category and then proposed it for speedy deletion on the grounds that it was empty. This is deceitful. Your suggestions and admonitions and repeated suggestions that I am a novice as regards categories simply serve as camouflage, and I shall not bother responding to them. Rather it seems that you are the person who is unfamiliar with the concept of the spectacle, particularly as developed in French Film theory. I am happy to apologise for using the singular form of the noun rather than the plural, this was simply a mistake. Perhaps you too could consider admitting that you have erred.
