One of you working on the article left some broken refs laying around. On one of them, I'm not sure how to fix. Look for The quote is from page 53 and the figure regarding the dimensions is from page 51. This belonged in the previous ref that has been condensed down to a named ref with a {{rp}} template. I've only removed the </ref> from the end of the sentence. Bgwhite (talk) 20:46, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing. Still working on it. Lfstevens (talk) 23:28, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help with page[edit]

Hello -- I want to update the page for CIMMYT and you've been recommended to me by jytdog as someone who might be able to approve it or disapprove it. Would you be willing to help? Many thanks. tellingtales 18:14, 7 March 2017 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tellingtales (talkcontribs) [reply]

I'm happy to review things, although I've got a lot going on and may not be as quick about it as I'd like to be. Lfstevens (talk) 19:53, 7 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I just saw this reply now after checking out the page for the first time in almost a year. I haven't gotten back to this for a while. I see some items on the page are red -- Germplasm Bank -- for example, does this mean there should be a separate page created for that? tellingtales (talk) tellingtales 16:17, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to write an article on Germplasm Bank, go for it. Otherwise, it's generally a good idea to remove the link. Lfstevens (talk) 16:21, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Removing refs from medical articles[edit]

Feel free to hide references but please do not remove them.

Also do not switch the citation style to "sfn" without consensus of those who have written the article in question. Best. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 18:23, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please help me understand the issues. I only (intentionally) remove references that are outdated or inappropriate. And what is the concern over sfn? Lfstevens (talk) 18:25, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of CT examinations[edit]

Hello Lfstevens,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged CT examinations for deletion, because it's too short to identify the subject of the article.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Thanks for the polishing you did to that article. I don't know if the original author will. I see you're one of our star editors, and it shows, so I was suprised you didn't say anything on the talk page. Perhaps advice about what you did and why. Just saying. You're not going to believe this. A roving editor determined that the most used source on the page was unreliable. Heard of Prabook? It's a specialized wiki for biographies. This will be fun.  - Myk Streja (Talk to me) 00:09, 26 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Copyedit of escalator[edit]

Hey, it looks like you arrived on escalator and did a pretty thorough copyedit when I was gone for the weekend after almost completing my own pretty thorough copyedit and reorganization of it over the weekend. I'm new here and don't really have a clue how crediting for the GOCE drive works but it seems like we both made pretty heavy revisions throughout, thoughts? Mehmuffin (talk) 18:04, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My usual practice is to remove the tag when I start copyediting in the hope that other guildies won't see it in the list any longer. Other editors use the GOCEinuse template to signal their intent. In any event, feel free to take credit. I'll remove my entry to prevent misunderstanding. Cheers! Lfstevens (talk) 22:14, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't sure if that was acceptable at first but given the confusion I'll start removing the tags first now, too. Thanks! Mehmuffin (talk) 14:31, 13 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dunoon[edit]

Hi. From your edit summary it looks like you might be beginning a copy edit process. A few months ago the article was bombarded with trivia, duplication and links to primary sources. I hope you don't mind me restoring the templates until the significant problems have been fixed. Drchriswilliams (talk) 22:34, 22 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I did a ce of the piece. Its problems now are not related to copyediting. If there's extra stuff there, please remove it, but my changes are valid. If you want to just tag it, please use correct tags. Lfstevens (talk) 23:20, 22 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for improving the article. If one issue has been resolved then removing the relevant tag sounds entirely appropriate. Tracking and fixing the problems with the article had become difficult with one over-enthusiastic editor recently adding poor-quality material without any clear explanations in their edit summaries and then reacting against editors that tried to help. Drchriswilliams (talk) 23:40, 22 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please replace the old tags with appropriate ones. Lfstevens (talk) 02:48, 23 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Articles from other editors' drive lists[edit]

I noticed you've started copy editing of Topkapı Palace, and was wondering if you were aware that Seraphim System was already working on that article? I just wanted to make sure there isn't a problem there. I also noticed you did Maharashtrian cuisine from Seraphim System's list and Taxila Central College, Horana which was on Noah Kastin's list. Are you collaborating with those editors? – Reidgreg (talk) 14:25, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My bad. I did not check others' lists. I have relied on the presence of the copyedit tag and the absence of the GOCEinuse tag to decide whether an article is available. I guess that's problematic for this drive. I will be more circumspect hereafter. Thanks for noticing. Lfstevens (talk) 18:02, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I know you're doing good work. I just wanted to head-off any potential conflicts and maybe check if the system needs refinement. The drive lists are way too long to expect anyone to go through them. Myself, I check for the copy-edit tag and go through the page history for names of other copy editors (but that's not perfect, either; there are a lot of new names this month).
I think a lot of us are removing the {{copy edit}} tag when we start articles on the drive. But in the copy editing instructions (which new copy editors are using) it says not to remove the copy edit tag until all copy editing is complete. The difference is that on a drive, we also have the {{working}} line on the drive page as a failsafe (ie: if the editor disappears, coordinators can check any leftover "working" articles and replace the copy edit tag). The instructions are for general copyediting outside of drives and blitzes, when nobody's keeping a watch on new copy editors. That may have to be revisited.
Please consider dropping a note with those editors (also noticed Escalator appears on Mehmuffin's list) to make sure there are no problems. No reason to panic, everything's in the page history so they can carry on from an older version if they really want to do so. – Reidgreg (talk) 19:30, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I don't think abandoned articles are a major issue. It doesn't happen often, and often I see the ce tag get put back while I'm still editing. Removing the tag works the best. GOCEinuse gets pushback occasionally, too. Lfstevens (talk) 00:07, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding "abandoned" articles, I feel I should note that this is a month-long drive. Our "deadline" to finish articles is the end of the month. Until then, I don't feel it's fair to consider them "abandoned", especially when there are (as of this writing) 70 other old articles to work on, plus requests. Editors are volunteers and occassionally have to take unscheduled wiki-vacations. Not to mention taking a break to wade through the MOS, or check with the language reference desk, or just to clear ones mind on a tough edit. Some editors may also be working in other areas of the encyclopedia and only copyediting one or two days a week. Not everyone can put in daily (or even weekly) efforts on a month-long drive, nor should they have to. – Reidgreg (talk) 10:10, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for being obtuse. I was trying to agree with you, not to imply that if an article hadn't been worked on for a few days that someone else should feel free to take over. Lfstevens (talk)
Ooops! I miscommunicate way too much for a copy editor! That's probably why I worry about being bitey to newcomers. OK, keep up the good work! – Reidgreg (talk) 16:40, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Topkapi[edit]

I reverted your changes to this article - for one thing, I am in the middle of a copyedit on this article already, which you may have missed because I took a short break from editing due to a mild fever. However, if you check the history you will see that I have already started the copy edit for this article. The other issue is the "Ref cleanup" resulted in references displaying like this {{sfn|Necipoğlu|1991|p=23">Necipoğlu, pg. 23</ref> in several places of the article (and it has been like this since last night), so I restored the last version I was working on. I don't want to switch to sfn in the middle of a copy edit because it slows me down, I find it much faster to get the work done and then convert to sfn, because this is very easy to do in my text editor (as opposed to doing this while I work and going back and forth between the bibliography and text.) Sorry for the confusion.

Seraphim System (talk) 05:01, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to work your will. I look forward to seeing the results of your work. Lfstevens (talk) 07:14, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why don't you simply place a :

tag on the page, rather than remove the existing templates, then when you have finished your work they can be removed. Otherwise it simply looks like you are removing the maintenance tags without any improvements. Dan arndt (talk) 13:54, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have used that tag in the past. I find that it upsets some editors. I hope to avoid conflict by putting "begin ce" in my edit summary when I remove the copyedit tag. It's not perfect either, but I haven't found anything better. Lfstevens (talk) 18:12, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but my dance card is full at the moment. Lfstevens (talk) 19:45, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Quality of copy edits[edit]

I'd like to ask you to please spend the last few days of the drive to check over the articles already on your list. I've looked over some of them and I'm seeing the same sort of issues that were in Cheruvattoor, Mayo Hall (Bangalore), and Luca Bindi (which I'd checked on 19 July – see the page histories).

The main drive instructions state: copy edited articles should comply with the Manual of Style and be free of grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors. Rejected work will not count towards your total and you may be penalized for it. This is just my opinion, the coordinators might not agree with me about the quality of your copy edits. Given the number of articles you've done and the time you've obviously put into it, I feel you could have been more thorough.

It'd be a lot easier all around if you could fix up your articles, rather than having to do a review process at the end of the drive. If you're concerned about leaderboard positions, I'm willing to not claim any more articles for the drive than you have on your list. I don't mind sharing any of the gold-star positions, but I want to feel that you earned it.

I apologize if I've somehow challenged you to go too fast. And I hope you can receive this constructively. Please give it some thought. – Reidgreg (talk) 16:16, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't care about the leaderboard. Go for it. Thanks for letting me know I need to aim higher. Lfstevens (talk) 17:12, 28 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've made some committments and don't have time to go into specifics, but you can check the page histories for my changes to those three articles for the type of stuff you missed. – Reidgreg (talk) 11:46, 29 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I took the opportunity to go back and read the MOS. Reminded me of a few things. Plus I made a copyedit! Lfstevens (talk)

Oh, thanks for saying that! I was feeling so foot-in-mouth writing the above to the first GOCE Hall of Fame inductee. The MOS does change a bit. I did a dozen television articles on the January drive this year, then on 2 February MOS:TVPLOT had a major update and those articles were no longer compliant.

For what it's worth, I did check four other articles. Here are the things I noted:

  • Sachiya Mata Temple
    • punctuation: missing space at comma, colon-hyphen combination, terminal punctuation on sentence fragments in captions, double-comma, missing space at parenthesis, some inconsistency with serial commas.
    • grammar: missing and in inline list, tenses
    • spelling: homeof → home of, Everyday → Every day
      • overcapitalization: From, the King of the Gods, was In the town, the Prime minister, Kesar, Shandan, Dhoop, Saffron, Lapsi, Sandal (some of these last ones needed italics as foreign words).
    • MOS: C.E. → CE for common era, SI-Imperial conversions, numeric conversions (lakh → hundred thousands), excessive italics (Asura king, the Param Vir Chakra), external link in prose
  • Tejumola Olaniyan
    • punctuation: en-dash in link (corrected to move link from redirect to target article), mismatched single/double quotes, missing space after full stop, extra full stop at reference
    • over-captialization: Bachelor's degree, post-colonial African State, Othering
    • grammar: indefinite article (a former member of)
    • MOS: semi-ironic quotes, list formating (excessive italics, em dashes as separators)
    • prose: overlong sentence in Career section (a bit complex with multiple parenthetic notes)
      • Also some close paraphrasing/copyvio
  • Paul Eddie Pfisterer
    • punctuation: one comma, spaces at parenthesis, full stops in dates
    • spelling: Eight of his painting → Eight of his paintings
      • overcapitalization: Museum exhibitions → museum exhibitions
    • MOS: italics and title case for major works of art, to for date range starting with from (not from 1974–1981), inconsistent date formats, MOS:SURNAME, MOS:CURLY (one set of quotes, and a non-standard apostrophe)
  • Scallion
    • punctuation: spaces at punctuation/refs, mismatched parenthesis, hyphenate compound modifier
    • spelling: topped → topping
    • MOS: list formatting consistency, spaced en dashes for list separators (not unspaced em dashes), excessive italics, excessive bold in refs

I feel like such a nit-picker, though that's kind of the job description. I'll request a check of my own work and see what turns up. Thank-you for being so calm and reasonble despite my impudence. – Reidgreg (talk) 12:25, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
