Filling in references

Hi, I saw you filled in some refs at Great chain of being, but without supplying even the title of a review, let alone the page numbers and other details. If you choose to volunteer for such a task, it behoves you to take it seriously, to verify the sources you are citing, and to fill in all the necessary fields of the template. I run the available programs which have been approved by the community. The work falls within the "short citation" section of Wikipedia:Citing sources#Types of citation. There is no requirement that every field be filled. After that anyone is free to enhance the refs after I am done - as you did at that article. Hello Dthomsen8. There are some websites used as references that User:Zhaofeng Li/reFill just can't format. I don't know the ins and outs of why this happens. There is a second tool called User:Dispenser/Reflinks that I use on those that refill can't fix. As you can see here it worked in formatting the ref in the Italia article. Still there are some refs that neither program can fix - those have to be done manually. You have to choose a template from these Wikipedia:Citation templates and fill them out. Those can be a bit laborious and tricky - working with them over time helps to get used to filling them out. You can also just leave those and another editor who is used to fixing them by hand will come along and take care of things. Best regards and have a pleasant week. @Wikaviani: Always use a strong password; if you already have a strong password, change it periodically, and always change it when you return to your own machine after using somebody else's to log in - even if you logged out on that other machine.
Then there is tw-factor authentication but I get the impression that you need some fancy hardware like a QR code scanner. You also need to write down some security codes (this is what we are told not to do with passwords) because without those you can be locked out. Hi Redrose64. GG-J did send me an email this morning. After years of getting only one match a weekend (BBCAmerica) or getting them tape delayed (Bein Sports) the tournament has been picked up by NBCSports. Last year their coverage of the Winter Olympics meant I still missed several matches but this year they are all on live - rubs hands together in glee!! Last night was a remarkable comeback. Today's England v Ireland match should be a treat. Each year the question is will Italy ever win even one :-) Thanks for you post here and in the thread just above. Cheers. Monday update
Wales have reported a clean bill of health today. Full-back Liam Williams was the major concern after leaving the field with a cut head.
Neil Jenkins, Wales kicking coach, said, "Most of the boys have come through without serious injury and I would say everybody will be okay for Saturday."
Full-back Leigh Halfpenny is still ruled out for these first two games due to ongoing concussion concerns after suffering a head blow against Australia on 10 November.

One of the greatest actors to have never won an Oscar. His performance in Scrooge is one of my all-time favorite interpretations of that role, ranking side by side with Alistair Sims. His understated handling of Roberts' boss in Erin Brockovich was outstanding. What a group of incredible performances in that category for the Oscar that year (and ironic that Finney was also in Traffic, for which Del Torro won). I really thought he was robbed for The Dresser. Of course his portrayal of Hercule Poirot set the standard for that role in Murder on the Orient Express, and he was brilliant in Under the Volcano (which I am surprised at the lack of quality of that article). Two of his lesser known films I also enjoyed greatly were Delivering Milo and The Big Fish. While he hasn't acted in years, his passing is still sad. Thanks for your post Onel5969. I agree with everything you've written. Scrooge is my favorite (and my sister's) as well - It is the only version I know of that manages to get the word coffin nail (see my Xmas card of 2017 if it is in your archives) into the story - although it is a scene that is not in the book. The story I've read is that he was performing on a London stage while filming MotOE. Each night after the final curtain he was bundled into an ambulance which had been converted into a makeup room and was transformed into Poirot on the way to the film set. Leigh Halfpenny update

Hi Michael!
Leigh returns to the Wales training squad tomorrow after being fully tested during a Scarlets training match. Wayne Pivac, his Scarlets boss, said, "He did everything. Full contact. Full tackling. We had a mini-game scenario with no hiding places and he was taking high balls, getting clattered and did everything that he needed to do."
Leigh's team mate, fly-half Rhys Patchell is also fit following his December hamstring injury.
Pivac is waiting to hear whether the pair will be released by Wales to travel to Italy on Saturday for the match against Benetton Rugby in the Pro14.

WALL-E

I disagree. There is no disambiguation page. Would a person be able to find the information now that you moved it? I had a note which I should have added more detail to, which I made when reading an actual newspaper, and today I had the opportunity to search that newspaper using a resource not normally available to me. The newspaper's web site cannot be used to find this. And I had to guess which newspaper, based on a list I made of articles that didn't come up when I searched the various newspapers' web sites. Yes, I get lazy when writing stuff down as I read actual newspapers.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 18:22, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

I was not complaining about you or your edits Vchimpanzee. As stated at WP:HATNOTES they are used since a "Readers may have arrived at the article containing the hatnote because they sought article and the article with the hatnote have similar names or are otherwise easy to confuse." There is no way a reader can confuse Mars Cube One with WALL-E. Also "Mention other topics and articles only if there is a reasonable possibility of a reader arriving at the article either by mistake or with another topic in mind" I do not see how a reader will wind up at the article using Wikipedia's search function. As an example the Snoopy article does not have a hatnote directing a reader to Apollo 10. Another problem is that the mention of Wall-E in the Mars Cube One article does not occur until the second paragraph of the Overview section so it is not easy to determine how that article has any connection to the film. That is why I suggested that a fuller explanation in prose might better suit both articles purposes. This is just one editors thoughts and you could get more input by posting at Wikipedia talk:Hatnote or WP:VPM. MarnetteD|Talk 19:14, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
Like I said, I was in a very unusual situation where a normal Google search would have been of no help. A disambiguation page would have been helpful there, and finding only "WALL-E" with just those hatnotes would not have helped. But having that one resource which allowed me to look at several newspapers showed me what I was looking for. Also, the hatnote talk page might be the place to say this but this is not the only time I've added to hatnotes or created them for situations like this. Songs with lyrics that are not the title are another example. Thanks for sharing this Bertaut. I appreciate your thoughts on the film. Your description of the references to Will's plays in the film brings to mind this film Molière (2007 film) which does the same thing. I was also glad for your summing up of Branagh's career as a director. He has turned out to have an interesting mix of genres and styles over the years. I'm thinking of having a viewing (when it is released on DVD) where I combine AiT with Will Shakespeare (TV series). Back in November I did that with Wilde (film) and The Happy Prince (2018 film) and found the combination most interesting and thought provoking. Thanks again and cheers. At Special:Diff/884403673, you removed the two categories Category:Films set in the 1870s and Category:Films set in the 19th century from Little Men (1998 film). I also didn't understand removal of Category:Sony Pictures films in Special:Diff/884441881 at Holmes & Watson, Special:Diff/884441902 at RoboCop (2014 film) – the infoboxes say "Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing" and the category is described as "Movies released by Sony Pictures." Does this not include distribution? There are similar edits for Category:Columbia Pictures films, Category:Fox Searchlight Pictures films, etc. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 01:20, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Hello AlanM1. The Little Men removal was a mistake and I have restored the cats. As to your second paragraph if you click on the link in my edit summary Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/Categorization#General categorization you will see item 4 reads "by studio – this is exclusively for the studio(s) that produced the film". This goes with the instructions at WP:CATDEF where it states "A central concept used in categorising articles is that of the defining characteristics of a subject of the article" - so the point is that the company that produces a film is a defining characteristic since they are involved with all aspects of its creation - the company that distributes it is not. Except in the case where the production company also distributes it the distributor only gets involved after the film is finished. Now this only applies to the category. Mention of the distributor in articles about films and in list articles for the companies is fine. Regards. MarnetteD|Talk 02:33, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Hello again AlanM1. Please read WP:CATVER again. Categories are about defining characteristics. As to your question about "what films has Sony distributed" a list article like List of New Line Cinema films is perfectly acceptable for that info. Thanks for the update about the IP. I will leave them a message. There is an editor who was blocked fr creating socks to add just this kind of stuff to articles but, hopefully, this is not them. Just a quick note to let you know that the Bloomberg URLs you addressed in this edit weren't turned into full citations. Instead, Bloomberg seems to have directed you to some kind of CAPTCHA, the details of which ended up in the citation template instead of the desired geographical information. I usually post about actors who have left us but I must note the passing of Stanley Donen. So many wonderful and innovative musicals. Two for the Road (film) and Bedazzled (1967 film) are two non-musical delights. His 1997 Oscar acceptance speech is a mark of how much fun he had making films. RIP Stanley. You could be right Viennese Waltz (BTW I think your user name is great - it reminds me of when I learned to play Tales from the Vienna Woods on the piano as a youngster) VX has been active again recently and the two do crossover at times. As that editor has only made that one edit I don't know if an admin will block them though you could report at AIV and see what happens. The one thing you can do is add that name to the list at Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Ref Desk Antisemitic Troll. Also feel free to change the name on the possible sockpuppet tag that I added. Thanks for bare url cleanup, and an aside

I would have put this in an edit comment, but there wasn't another edit to make thanks to your work. That said, where you noted in your edit comment that "that is not a formatted reference - it is an EL" I should point out that Template:Cleanup bare URLs does not make such a distinction: "A bare URL is a link to a website with no identifying information except the link itself. It is not just a citation style that leaves the URL visible to the reader." In fact, it uses precisely "[2]" as an example of when to apply that template, whether in the references or elsewhere. That makes little difference GC. When an editor runs refill any item not in the <ref></ref> tags is ignored. Those of us that work cleaning up Bare URL's look in the ref section but no one is going to go hunting through an article to locate item(s) that are only ELs. If you find these in the future it would be a big help if you place the item in the ref tags. The way you used the edit summary was also a help but using the ref tags would save a edits for both people. Now you don't have to do this it is just that it would be helpful. Just a quick FYI this instruction Template:Cleanup bare URLs#How to use states that there is a fix step that an editor is supposed to do before adding the bare url template. There may be editors that follow that but I haven't encountered any. I did see one IP get blocked for not doing it though. In any event that fix also does not work on urls that aren't in ref tags either. Isn't this when we start to feel red tape coiling around our ankles :-) Regards. If they're not enclosed in <ref>...</ref> tags and also are not in one of the bottom sections, WP:ELPOINTS no. 2 applies: With rare exceptions, external links should not be used in the body of an article. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:23, 30 March 2019 (UTC)

Refill

Hi, there appears to be a problem with the refill edits filling in invalid dates. This edit added a date of |date=2 April 8008 and this change added |date=2 April 9802. Would be worth checking through other edits to see if there are similar problems. Keith D (talk) 20:05, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. By the way the John Quarmby article needs adjustment. It talks about Quarmby being happy at being paid fifty pounds for a role, but it doesn't make clear to the average reader that fifty pounds in 1974 was worth a lot more in purchasing power than fifty pounds in 2019. MarnetteD The item was edited out by another user as unecyclopediac. But, yeah, you don't see much understanding of how inflation applies to money in olden times. Im Enid Blyton's sixth Malory Towers book, a pupil is expelled for stealing five pounds from the Matron. But ONE pound when the book was written is worth sixty pounds in 2019, so you can see why stealing five pounds is a big reason the girl was expelled.
