Moving pages to Draft space

Hello, Mccapra,

Just a reminder, please do not leave a redirect when you move a page from Article or Talk space to Draft space. These redirects need to be deleted as CSD R2 cross-space redirects and, for some reason, they sometimes don't show up in the Speedy Deletion category even after the page has been tagged. There's no need to do that yourself; the script you're using already adds the tag, so you just end up with 2 malformed tags on the page. Jackmcbarn (talk) 04:13, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi thanks for your message. If you are saying that the article is the product of extensive research and that it already uses every available reference, then I’m afraid that’s not very good news. We require numerous independent sources to support an article, not pieces the subject has authored or references to him in religious publications associated with him. A Page That You Draftified

You moved V Aravind Subramanyam to Draft:V Aravind Subramanyam. I agree that it did not belong in article space, and that it was all right in draft space. I have an update and a comment. It seems that the submitter then moved the page from Draft:V Aravind Subramanyam to Sastha Aravind, another name used by the subject. I don't think that a page should be draftified twice, which is move-warring, so I thought it needed to be sent to AFD. So as the WP:BEFORE, I Googled on both titles. Well, I found the article, and both in Wikipedia and on another web site. So I didn't AFD it, because that looks like copyvio. It is one of those technical cases where the submitter is ripping off their own copyright, but that is still copyvio, and is still G12.

The comment is that there seem to be two draftifying scripts in use by reviewers. The one that you have leaves the draft page tagged for AFC review. The one that I have does not tag the draft page for AFC review. I think it is better not to have the draft page tagged for review, because we know that the NPP reviewer decided it was not ready for article space.

User: Mccapra keeps reverting the pages for all the users who attempt to correct the page Egyptian to Turkish. Sources are already there. Mccapra always asking for sources for every word edited including the title . The Arabic page says Turkish and the English page says Egyptian. In addition to that all sources cited on both pages cite Turkish . Muhamed ali pasha though he lives in egypt was never egyptaian not an Egyptian born , doesn't even speak Arabic , no Egyptian relatives his main army wasn't based on Egyptian, his appointment are from ottomans .. I recently came across a couple of article creations by User talk:PutraOsakaTokyo. They have created several articles related to Malaysian politicians; however none of the added sources has mentioned subjects' name. As far as i can understand, either the user is unaware of citing pages or they provide misleading sources. Please see User talk:PutraOsakaTokyo#Recent page creation. Thank you. Thanks. The last one of these I patrolled I did wonder whether I’d paid enough attention to the sources which looked superficially impressive. I’ve gone back through my patrol log and unpatrolled the ones I can find. I think the patrol logging system is a bit flaky and it doesn’t capture all the reviews. History of rugby union matches between Scotland and United States moved to draftspace

I am confused why the History of rugby union matches between Scotland and United States was moved to draftspace because NONE of the other pages have sources, it is formatted the same exact way as the others. I linked the matches I could to the specific event as they occurred.

Hi you may well be right but I’m patrolling new pages, not all pages on related topics. Some older pages have got away with not being sourced, but new pages can’t. @عماد الدين المقدسي: Ok I’ve looked again and here’s what I think. Sources 10-16 simply verify his authorship. They’re fine but they don’t support notability. For a person to be notable we need things said about them by other people, independently. So ideally we want reviews of the books he wrote in major publications for example. It’s common to have to source details of a subject’s early life to interviews, but overall I’m still not seeing a lot of independent people (not associates and colleagues) talking about him. A good thing to find for example would be an official source or newspaper article showing that he is the president of a university. There’s no source for that at all at the moment and that would make the article much stronger. The best sources you have here are Al-Istiqlal and Al Jazeera. I’m not sure about Taganet. Anyway I think don’t spend any more time linking to Islamic religious websites because they won’t help prove notability. Anything else you can find in major news outlets will be helpful. Hello, @Mccapra:. I think i can address some of your concerns. The article is not based on primary sources, but in fact gives a shortened account of the histories compiled by the website in the references. That site could be seen as a disinterested, objective secondary source (purpose is to give an day-to-day account of each unit's history, without the need to qualify or take sides - after all, the war is over for more than 70 years now).

In this sense, it also does not qualify as original research. As it is a summary of existing historiography, based on records which can be verified. Epicurus BE (talk) 13:48, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Fine. I'm not a new pages reviewer, but sometimes think they just count references. If I was one, I'd be inclined to think a subject was notable when she has an article in a different Wikipedia, authority control links, and links within the English Wikipedia. Yes, other referencing systems are different, but I'd just request additional references, especially for a subject from history, without any danger to have something wrong in a BLP. In her case, the "Further reading" pdf referenced substantial parts of the facts, just not inline. The rest was rather easy. I'll get to the last external links and get more details from there, and then send her to DYK. The detour via draft seems a waste of time, and what happens to a reader, clicking on a blue link and finding a redirect to draft, could be annoying. Hi Gerda thanks for your note. I understand what you are saying. However on your point about how our readers are best served, I think they are best served by article creators putting proper sources into their articles. If you’re asking me to assume that all future articles by a particular editor are notable by default, that’s not going to happen. It did not take long for you to add sources today, and there’s no reason why article creators should expect to avoid giving themselves the trouble of an extra hour or so to put their own sources in by rather than expecting others to do it for them afterwards. I don’t create poorly-sourced new articles in mainspace myself and don’t really understand why some others do. If they do, it’s possible that a reviewer lacking their subject knowledge or the urge to try and piece together the case for notability will just put the work back on them. I'm disappointed to hear that you don't want to tell me if my view, that an article in a different language, authority control, and links in the English Wikipedia might indicate notability, makes any sense to you. I would like to concur with Gerda that if someone is notable enough to have a wikipedia article of long standing in language X, eo ipso they are notable enough for an article in another language. Thank you for the support, but not exactly my point. LouisAlain keeps producing several translations each day, obvioously rather undisturbed by the drafting. My point is that in Draft space, such incomplete products have less chances to be improved (because not seen by editors) than in article space with simple tags "citation required", preferably at specific facts, not big but unspecific at the top. Hello, I saw you've changed a page I created to draft. I am not sure what level of referencing you're looking for, when Wikipedia covers many Chinese railways with barely any references. I think everything in the article is sourced already. Also worth adding there is a Chinese article at zh:渝万高速铁路 though I forgot to add the interwiki link when creating it. Hi thanks for your message. I sent the article to draft because it only had two sources, both of which looked to me like announcements based on press releases rather than independent journalism. One of the sources, 3G.163 did not look reliable to me. For an established railway two sources might be sufficient, but for a construction project we need something more solid and reliable than this to be sure that Wikipedia is not being used for the purposes of commercial promotion. @Praxidicae: I just looked at this again for some reason and realised what happened. You sent it to CSD and I sent it to draft almost simultaneously. It didn’t have the CSD notice on it when I hit ‘move to draft’ - that must have appeared a second or so after I began draftifying it. to the Ismail Sirri Pasha page I created. I'm working to create entries for cabinet ministers in Egypt, and for most of them there's not much material available in English. Obviously the page is thin--that's why it's in Category:Egyptian_politician_stubs. I always cite primary sources, such as the major bibliographic dictionary of Al-Zirikli. In this case I linked to four different sources. Please avoid reflexive use of refimprove. Unless you have read the primary sources I've linked to, don't claim that the page needs verification. Hi thanks for your note. Great project to create articles for cabinet ministers. To establish notability we look for secondary rather than primary sources. Hi there. First, thanks for all you do on WP, especially over at NPP. Why don't you request WP:PAGEMOVER status? That way when you move a page, especially to draft, you can select to not leave a redirect behind. That way you wouldn't have to do all those deletion requests. As an English language Wikipedia administrator who quite often deals with speedy deletion requests and articles translated from other Wikipedias, my first thought was to decline the speedy deletion, as the article isn't "exclusively promotional and would need to be fundamentally rewritten to serve as encyclopedia article", but I am obviously biased when it comes to quirky art galleries: see The Museum of Everything (museum) and Museum of Old and New Art.
On second thoughts, I have decided to move it into "Draftspace"<to avoid outright speedy deletion of what appears to have - according the Jakarta Post - "about a hundred works of modern and contemporary art"

Hi please take a look at WP:RS. Reviewing this article I was concerned with whether the topic was notable, ie. whether there was extensive coverage in reliable independent sources. Most of the sources in the article at the moment are self-published (YouTube, social media, Eventbrite). What the article needs is more reviews and commentary from independent critics. @DGG: I agree, it does. However the article creator appears to have abandoned it. There’s no suggestion this is a hoax or some weird POV agenda, just a not very well-written start about a real historic state. The sourcing provided satisfied me that there is a valid topic, and if the article went to AfD it would be very likely to be kept. It seemed to me therefore that we were in the area of “can be improved by normal editing”, so I passed it. Mccapra (talk) 03:11, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

I recognize the dilemma here. The problem is the only practical way to get it improved would be to send it to AfD, and if I did people would complain that I hadn't tried to source it myself. @ChrisMat2020: Hi I’ve taken a look at the draft and honestly I’m not sure he is notable. Better sources are needed. Ref 1 isn’t opening for me. Refs 2 and 5 have to come out because you can’t use Wikipedia as a source on Wikipedia. 3 is just a directory, apparently. 9. is trivial detail that doesn’t support notability, so it’s looking a bit thin. One possible thing to do would be go to the article Sodo, add a new section for “Notable people” and list Samuel Urkato there. Hi I've removed the orphan tag. Some of your links may not survive long and may be reverted by other editors. The one from Sodo will be fine, but the university ones may not last. Some universities have lists of alumni and you can add people to them, but having a single individual identified as a notable person on the main page of a university article is not usual. New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

@Ibbrody: Hi thanks for your message. One of the purposes of Wikipedia is to try and help people understand difficult and unfamiliar topics so it is important to use the simplest and plainest English possible. The prose in your article us very dense and it reads like a university essay rather than an encyclopaedia article. So for example instead of:

”Attributions for poverty depict individuals' perceptions for the causes of poverty. This understanding builds on attribution theory, which is a social psychological perspective on how people make causal explanations about events in the world.”

I’d suggest:

” Attributions for poverty is concerned with what people believe about the causes of poverty. These beliefs are defined in terms of attribution theory.”

Keep sentences short; use links to other articles to avoid the need to explain specific terms. Imagine you are explaining the topic to an elderly relative and just use the simplest language you can. Good luck!Mccapra (talk) 18:19, 10 December 2020 (UTC)

Podcasts

Thank you for the kitten on my article, and I do have a teensy question. I'm seeing more and more articles using podcasts as sources. I don't see any specific info in the guidelines, but my gut feel is that podcasts fall into the "promotional" or "self-published" category and so they can be used but will not count as reliable. @10Sne1: hi I’m also not sure we have any specific guidelines on podcasts. I think the same principles apply as to any other type of source. Podcasts are usually interview or discussion, not authoritative statements about a topic, so generally they’d rank like other interviews, as unreliable sources. @Ornek11222: hi yes those sources verify that there is a Hometown Movement but that’s not the question. Wikipedia does not have articles about every political party because many of them are unimportant - marginal, fringe movements that never contest elections or only collect very small percentages of the vote. The sourcing in the article at the moment shows that the party exists, but does not show that it is important. If you can find sources that discuss the party in depth and are not just statements about its founding, then notability will be demonstrated. Please see WP:ORG. Sallow

Hi, Mccapra, you recently draftified an article I wrote on the color sallow, stating that it did not appear to meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. I am not sure I understand... We have articles on hundreds of different colors, and the color "sallow", used to describe the color of skin, has been in use in English for a very long time. I provided references to attest to this fact. If you feel the article's subject is not notable, please nominate it for deletion, but the condition of the article is not a determinant of the subject's notability. Placing it in draft space is asking it to be put to a slow death, which doesn't benefit anyone. I firmly believe the subject is notable as a color, and if you conduct even a brief search of the subject I think you will find that I am correct in this! @A loose necktie: hi thanks for your message. I agree that the note I left isn't as clear as it could be. The topic 'sallow' is very likely to be notable (although I'm not sure it is actually a colour). The key issue at the moment is the sourcing. As the message I left says "It is not clear whether this topic is notable in Wikipedia terms, but it may be, if adequate sourcing demonstrates it. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources." At the moment the article does not have reliable independent sources, and it is quite unlike the other colour articles we have. Instead of being an encyclopaedic description of the term 'sallow' and its uses, the article provides a medical diagnosis, which we are not supposed to do on Wikipedia, and it is supported by references to makeup advice pages and healthline. Some rewriting is needed to bring it into line with similar colour pages on the encyclopedia, and it needs sources os a similar type to those used in other colour articles.
