Medal World Championship template

FYI. I saw the adjustment you did on the Template:MedalWorldChampionships earlier today. I like the edit you did to the template, but we would like to keep this template as sport-neutral as possible (athletics, swimming, luge, sailing, bobsleigh, nordic skiing, etc). If you want to put that in as a separate sport, they do have a template for that. I just don't remember which one it is, but you can use that one. Hi again! Thank you for your note at my page. You've been doing a lot of good foundation work here, and it's appreciated that some of the lesser-known gymnasts are getting pages thanks to you. I'll be trying to go through and offer some suggestions for editing, if you want. At the moment the only quick note I have is on the "World Champion" category--we reserve that only for gymnasts who have won an individual gold medal at Worlds; not those who have been a part of a World Champion team. Also, your new medal table is awesome, but we generally keep the tables to the three largest competitions: Worlds, Olympics and depending on continent, Pan Ams (N. or S. America), Europeans (""), Asian Games (""), All-Africa Games ("") or Commonwealths (AUS/NZ). World Cup results are usually added on the graph on the bottom of the page. Keep up the good work! I personally like keeping the medals in color order (gold first, et al). I totally agree with you that when they are in year order, it's easier to see progression. I think though, that for the average reader, it's a lot easier to use the article as a reference when the medals are in color order, because they can easily and immediately see, for instance, how many gold medals a gymnast won at the Olympics, etc. etc. etc. And it looks neater. :) The question has been going back and forth for some time, in various sports on Wiki...the sort of unofficial consensus is that if someone's left a medal table in color order, it's left alone; if it's in year order, it's also left alone.

The thing about the World Cup is exactly what you say--it hasn't been a consistent competition over the years, so it's hard to gauge the significance of the medals (again for the average reader, not the gymnastics reader). One of the things about the medal tables is that they're mostly there for average readers and try to include competitions that they know and can compare. The World Cup is a very limited competition--while it does attract major talent, it isn't quite as inclusive as, say, the Pan Ams or All-Africa. Even if a gymnast wins a medal there, she or he isn't competing against the same full field that would be at a continental or major regional championships. It's also because it's an effort to keep the medal tables neat and somewhat concise--for some of these gymnasts who won major titles, if we added World Cup and other competitions, the tables would end up going down the page and probably be longer than the article. :) That's also why Goodwill Games, Friendship Games, etc are not typically in the medal tables--these competitions while important only occurred a few times and were limited in scope.

That's my two cents there...it's an interesting discussion and I'm glad to continue it. No worries at all about the cats, either--I frequently copy/paste as well, and end up with categories/etc. that aren't quite right (when I worked on the Friendship Games article, Bilozerchev was from ROU for a while because I'd overlooked the country tag...!). And I totally agree with you that MAG is woefully underrepresented here. I am still trying to get my head around the fact that Ivan Ivankov of all people didn't have a page. Well done. :) The ladies do have a similar tag at the bottom of their pages, and it's time MAG had one too. The only thing I would say about Yuri's article--and it's great--is that the bottom section is likely to be considered completely POV and OR and isn't going to stand up. Comparing the gymnasts and their merits is considered OR, and as much as I love World Gymn Rank and think the author of it is a genius, it's not considered a reliable source. Also, even though Ivankov hasn't won a medal, he has gone to the Olympics, so he can't be considered a non-Olympian. Here's what I'd suggest, although I'll leave it to you to make the change: delete the section and add to the lead:

With a total of 34 individual medals at World Championships, World Cups, and European Championships competitions, Korolev is considered to be the most decorated male gymnast never to win an Olympic medal. After Vitaly Scherbo and Nikolai Andrianov, he has won more major-all around titles, 8 in total, than any other male gymnast. Additionally, Korolev’s 21 individual World Championship and World Cup medals is the 2nd highest all-time tally among all male or female gymnasts, surpassed only by Scherbo’s 26.

Thanks very much for stopping by and saying hello! The Olympics has gotten me very frazzled at the moment--so much to do--but it's a good sort of frazzled. :) Thank you for all your help on the artistic gymnastics article and elsewhere. I like your idea about adding notable champions, but my one worry--and it's a major one--is that it's going to be a point of contention. If there are only five names, there would probably be a lot of "why have you listed Latynina and not Korbut, this gymnast was overscored and didn't deserve to be there..." and so on. As an alternative, I think having the templates at the bottom for "Olympic champions in (event)" and "World champions in (event)" would be a good idea, because then everyone would be there and it would cut the possibility of bickering between editors who prefer this or that gymnast. I've been going through Hades trying to preserve NPOV and keeping editors from killing each other on the Alicia Sacramone, Yang Yilin, Jiang Yuyuan and He Kexin articles lately so I'm expecting the worst everywhere...

Hey Miloluvr, thank you for your message. :) I really like the idea of the footers for the event medalists--I think they're very needed and a welcome addition to the pages. It also gives us a really easy way to see who still needs an article written--IMHO a World Champion should never be a red link, and when we see them we can work on them. Well done. :) I'm starting to add them to the articles now--I will start with FX and go backwards from there. I'm honestly not sure what's what with the 1930s Worlds either, to be honest. I always pretty much think of it all starting in the 1950s. :)

Olympic Gymnastics Champions Templates

Miloluvr, I noticed that you made two changes to the templates I was working on for Olympic women's gymnastics champions:

1. For the all-around champion template, you bolded all of the text and inserted pipes instead of dots.

2. For individual event champion templates, you changed the dots in between athletes to pipes.

The comment for each is listed as "to overhaul". What does that mean? What was your reasoning behind changing them? My reasoning for the design descisions I made are:

1. Since the article being accessed bolds the athlete's name in the footer, I wanted to leave the other athletes and years unbolded. With everything bolded, it's hard for the athlete's name to stand out.

2. Regarding pipes vs. dots, I personally prefer the dots to pipes, but whatever the standard is will be fine. Looking for other Olympic sports templates, it seems that there isn't a consensus. Athletics uses dots (i.e. swimming (i.e. Template:Footer_Olympic_Champions_100_m_Men), while swimming uses pipes (i.e. Template:Footer_Olympic_Champions_200_m_Freestyle_Men).

I like that you added a link to the template headings, but I wanted to know your reasoning behind the other changes so that we and other editors can come to a consensus about how to make these template boxes the most usable.

Miloluvr, I updated the Olympic champion footer templates. I un-bolded the all-around champion boxes so that the bold would stand out, as we discussed. I kept the pipes you added, along with the link in the heading (nice touch!). I renamed some of the templates to fix the misspelling of "all around". The pages should all link correctly now. Next, I'd like to try to improve the team all-around template to account for all of the medalists (see Template:Footer Olympic Champions 4x100 m Men for an example.

I started adding team members to List of Olympic medalists in gymnastics (women) as well.

Thanks a lot for highlighting her work and achievements. I've made some modifications (added her participation at the 1964 Olympic Games, etc.. ). If possible, I would like to ask you a question: What do you mean with the sentence "At the 1960 Rome Olympics, she buttressed her stronger teammate Sonia Iovan, helping their team to the bronze and she was 11th in the individual combined standings." Do you mean that she reinforced (supported) Sonia Iovan? (Sorry, English is not my native language.) In my opinion the meaning of the sentence is not very clear to a non-native and to a person which is not familiar with artistic gymnastics. Because (1) use of word "buttresed" and (2)it could suggest that the team had only two people Sonia Iovan and Elena Leusteanu. I would very much appreciate if we can discuss about the meaning of this sentence in order to improve the quality of the article. Thanks!
