Kongo religion page

Hello,

Can you please revert 2001:4BC9:925:863A:7D6D:EE3E:D11C:921F 's update on https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kongo_religion. This person doesn't understand it is about Kongo religion not all Bantu languages speakers religion. Somebody040404 (talk) 11:43, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

As I already explained, I used references specifically mentioning Kongo traditions, next to other traditional African religions, which is part of a wider shared mythology. I also removed the content which is indeed off topic per WP:TOPIC. The remaining expansion is relevant for a better understanding and mostly about Kongo specific mythology.2001:4BC9:925:863A:7D6D:EE3E:D11C:921F (talk) 11:46, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

On the new copyright investigation

So today I received a notice that I was being investigated for all my copyright violations, although I admit that I probably did violate close paraphrasing rules on a few other occasions during my career on this website, I have a few questions about these new events. Does this mean I get blocked or banned again? And do I have to or get to play a part in fixing any of these mistakes? Ewf9h-bg (talk) 18:48, 6 March 2022 (UTC)

@Ewf9h-bg Thank you for asking. You don't need to worry about being blocked again as a result of the investigation- I already blocked and unblocked you for the copyright violations, opening the investigation is me following up on my block and looking for any remaining issues in your past edits. You are allowed to help out at the investigation but you don't need to. If you want to help out, pointing out which sources you copied from or providing sources that other users may not be able to access would be helpful. Mannysoloway

Hi Moneytrees! I wasn't exactly sure what to do in this situation, but I've noticed that Mannysoloway has been copying content within Wikipedia at NFL on ABC. I asked them what articles they copied from and explained the necessity of attribution to them, but they only recalled one article they took the content from (History of Monday Night Football) when it seems to me that there were others copied from too (History of ESPN on ABC). They have still declined to provide attribution and may have been doing this for a while. The relevant conversations are at User talk:Mannysoloway#Copying within Wikipedia at "NFL on ABC" and Wikipedia:WikiProject_Television/Assessment#2022. — Bilorv (talk) 16:22, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

@Bilorv I looked through their edits a bit- they got a notice from Diannaa about copying without attribution in June 2021, and I can see some other edits that look like unattributed in wiki copys. At least it looks like they listened to your advice and are now attributing in wiki copies. I noticed a different problem with their edits though, as some of them contain close paraphrasing; compare this edit to the source, and this big edit to the several sources it cites. I'll look more later but this will probably need an investigation of some sort, and I'll leave a note about close paraphrasing for the editor. Hopefully an investigation won't be too intensive, it looks like this problem has been found out early- thanks for bringing it to my attention. Moneytrees🏝️Talk🌵CCI guide 21:18, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

Cara al sol lyrics (Spanish Phalangist anthem)

Hi, Moneytrees-- Happened to click on link to your page while trying to understand the history of edits to an article on a Fascist anthem from the years leading up to the Spanish Civil War, "Cara al Sol": [1]. You seem to be an ideal Wikipedian to ask about the matter.

Transcribing the lyrics may (surprisingly) violate copyright law (in Spain? In Europe?), yet its historical relevance is manifest. It is a document reflecting the ideology of at least one segment of the supporters of the future dictator Francisco Franco. It is analogous to songs like "A las barricadas" and "The Internationale," and it is echoed in the '60s hymn to freedom by the Valencian singer Raimon, "Al vent" (La cara al vent -- "Facing the wind").

Currently, earlier edits (though not all) that include the lyrics are not visible to the public. Can this be rectified? Despite the concerns cited by Kirkworld [[2]] and user Error [[3]], is there not legal justification for making the lyrics publicly available and restoring the history of edits to public view?

Thanks! --Moises de la vera (talk) 22:32, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

@Moises de la vera, Thank you for asking me...
These sort of anthem articles are always a pain to deal with when it comes to inclusion of lyrics. Most of the time, the lyrics are new enough to be copyrighted, and it really isn't very encyclopedic anyways to include the entire lyrics of a song in an article. We also have a strict policy on use of non-free (aka copyrighted) content, a lot stricter than most sites. Our rules on copyright are unfortunately some of the least bendable ones we have. Even if I was un-hiding my own revision deletion on that article, it would be a bad idea.
That said, since the lyrics are presented as lyrics and there's not that many lyrics to the song, I believe it falls more on our rules about "use of non-free content" on the copyright spectrum. To explain further, most of the time something that is revision deleted for copyright violations, it comes from someone pasting text in from a source and passing it off as their own work. That text is copyrighted, so it is therefore a copyright violation on top of being plagiarism. In this case the lyrics are essentially being presented as quotes, and I don't really bother revision deleting quotes, so I won't revision delete any new additions of the lyrics; it feels pointless to do so. That said, they should not be in the article as they are still copyright violations in a way, so I will not be undoing my past revision deletion. I get that this may be a disappointing response and might not make that much sense, sorry. MoneytreesTalk🏝️CCI guide 03:47, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello, I see on your user page that you use JSTOR and I'd like to know more about your experience. By my calculations, a good 70 % of the main JSTOR content is now available for everyone at Internet Archive Scholar, with full text search provided e.g. at https://scholar.archive.org/ . The service is still in beta, but I've used it for some source-finding and it seems quite usable to me; I wonder whether that's just my experience. If you have a chance, the next time you'd be looking for a source on Google Scholar or JSTOR or similar, to perform the same search on IA scholar instead, I'd be curious to hear how it ends up. Thanks, Nemo 19:07, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Copyright

Hello, Moneytrees,

Quick question, I'm trying to check a draft for copyright violations and the Earwig page analysis tool keeps timing out on me. Do you know of another tool that I could use to check? I scanned the resource page and didn't immediately see an alternative. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 18:46, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Okay, it seems to be back online. If you know of anything I could use as a back-up, I'd be grateful. Many thanks for all of the hard work you do! Liz Read! Talk! 18:56, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
@Liz, Yeah it's been timing in and out for me today as well. There's some text-comparison sites that work as alternatives like copyleaks, although you only have a few scans there before it you have to start paying for it. Copypatrol also seems to be working right now, although that only generates reports on individual edits and can't be made to scan an article on command. Thank you for the hard work you do as well! MoneytreesTalk🏝️CCI guide 18:59, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions. It really shows how much we rely on Earwig, in spite of its limitations, it's usually pretty quick and you can request it search specific URLs which is handy. Liz Read! Talk! 21:58, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Open CCI submitted a GAN

Hello Moneytrees, a CCI that you opened, Ewf9h-bg, has recently submitted Samnites for a Good Article Nomination. A preliminary look at the article reveals a lot of issues, but I'm a first time reviewer and not super familiar with CCI so I thought I would let you know. It looks like the GAN will be a quick fail, but I would like to help with cleaning up the article now that I'm invested in it, though I'm not confident in doing that solo. If you'd be able to take a look and possibly lend some advice I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Fritzmann (message me) 00:13, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

@Fritzmann2002 Well, one day the article will need to be cleaned up, so I'd be happy to help- don't be afraid of doing it solo, it'd be an absolute slog. The edits to that page from that user can be seen near the top in the section Wikipedia:Contributor_copyright_investigations/Ewf9h-bg#Pages_1_to_20. In my experience with this checking this user's edits, they tend to copy from every source they cite... so each sentence they add, plus the associating citation(s) will need to be checked. They also do not always change the URL when citing different sections in the same book; for example, if they cite something in a section about Egyptian thrones in one section of an article and then cite something about Assyrian thrones in a different section, Google books keywords they used for the Egyptian section will be the same as the ones they used for Assyrian section even though one is citing different content than the other. @Ewf9h-bg has access to some of these sources, so maybe they can help with the cleanup. Saggart Reservoir

Hi Moneytrees, just wondering what was the problem with my addition to the Saggart page about the Saggart Reservoir? Ridiculopathy (talk) 17:24, 27 March 2022 (UTC).

@Ridiculopathy Sorry, I met to leave you a note earlier about that but I got distracted by something. The issue was is that most of your addition was copied from the source. Wikipedia can't accept most content taken from sources as they are copyright violations- anything you add to an article must be written in your own words. The note I left you on your talk explains this in greater detail. If you have any further questions, please ask me. MoneytreesTalk🏝️CCI guide 17:50, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

I’m back for just a few moments.

Hi, I do apologize but I surely thought that I left you a link to their page.Xtools/ Musik Animal is what he goes by Realme233 (talk) 17:10, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

@Realme233 Ok, what exactly did he do to you? (@MusikAnimal btw) MoneytreesTalk🏝️CCI guide 17:14, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
Realme233, this would go a lot faster if you linked us to the specific part of XTools that you are concerned about and would tell us why you are concerned about this or how your "data" is being abused. As is, you're leaving vague statements about "abusing data" all over the place and none of us have the faintest idea what you're talking about, and it's starting to get disruptive. GeneralNotability (talk) 17:15, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
The only edits you've made as far as I can tell are to report this supposed issue, so I'm assuming you're talking about a different account? As others have said, we need more information to understand what your complaint. For the record, everything reported in XTools is public data, thus whatever you're trying to get removed probably has nothing to do with XTools. MusikAnimal talk 16:21, 28 March 2022 (UTC)

Want to rewrite CCI articles

Belated thank you

Dear Moneytrees; I intentionally waited to thank you, not wanting to jinx the J. K. Rowling FAR, which closed as a kept Featured article today. This was the most complete block rationale I have ever seen. The JKR FAR was quite a challenge, and it was iffy all along as to whether the article would come through with its star, but most of us working on it were just happy knowing that, even if the article was defeatured, we would be leaving it in better shape than we found it. What a pleasant surprise to find, as disrupting editing happened, that an admin (you) "had our backs", and we could complete the work without further agida. I had no idea you (or anyone) was watching and what a relief it was to see that someone investigated and dealt with the level of disruption. Thank you for being part of a saved bronze star on an extremely high-pageview and controversial BLP. JKR may run WP:TFA on 26 June, the 25th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter article, which should be an interesting day; I hope you and other admins will keep it watchlisted. Query

Hello, Moneytrees,

I know you are very busy. But I followed a link in a discussion to Wikipedia:Copyright problems/Advice for admins and when I looked at the page, I saw that it hasn't substantially been edited (except for one edit in Nov. 2021) in over 11 years. I was wondering if you'd be willing to review this help page and update it as you see necessary.

It could be that the situation with handling copyright problems on Wikipedia hasn't changed much since 2011, but I expect that a review of procedures, by an admin who works so diligently with copyright problems, would be beneficial for administrators looking for guidance in how to pages. Thanks for considering my request. Liz Read! Talk! 00:23, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

Blocked

hello I noticed I was blocked and I do apologize, It may be worded very close but content was added, and yes I did use it as a template for the article because that page contains good biographies for the individuals that I was focusing onbut it's and yes you're right I should have been attributing my copy edits(some of the things that were copied were my own work so you technically don't need to attribute those edits but I should have been anyways but I was just doing so much that I wanted to get it done as I had many pages to make, the Marcel Demers page I really should have put more effort into like the other ones but I was not feeling the best yesterday so I just tried to rush it) and I'm sorry I legitimately did not know that that was not a legit source it looks like it is it contains decent information and I was given no warnings about the site itself on Wikipedia or by users when did it become illegal to use? In regards to the copyright usually I make substantial edits in rewording so that it is not copied at all however as I said I was trying to rush things which I apologize for, I also meant to put quotations around certain phrases or sets of information released by police or other parties however I as I said I didn't have time to do this, usually I do right the article in my own words and have written many articles properly I am still new to editing on Wikipedia I'm not going to act like an idiot but I'm also not a genius either.CanadianHistorian(MMA & History) (talk) 17:28, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

Claims of genocide of Ukrainians in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine

Did you identify who did the copyvio in Claims of genocide of Ukrainians in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine? I presume it was ArsenalGhanaPartey, but I don't have access to the hidden versions to check. It would be good to warn whoever did it. Boud (talk) 14:01, 23 April 2022 (UTC)

Sorry, I just saw User talk:ArsenalGhanaPartey#Copyright problems. So it looks like the copyvio originally happened in the Russian-language Wikipedia. I guess that's a warning that translating other-language Wikipedia articles requires some checking against the sources used there, or good enough knowledge of the other language to notice hints of when material is paraphrased rather than summarised. Anyway, for this article, the issue is closed (for en.Wikipedia - someone knowing Russian might want to alert people at the ru.Wikipedia version). Boud (talk) 14:08, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
