A second opinion

I originally reported, and have been working on cleaning up, Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/J Bar. On Rock Island Mysteries, I removed J Bar's original copying/close paraphrasing, only to be reverted and have a different close paraphrasing of some of the same content readded by Happily888. I removed that as well, citing WP:CLOP and making sure that the talk page had a cclean template (and updating the CCI). But now Happily888 has reverted my removal again, with an edit summary citing Earwig. Would you mind taking a look at the recent edits to see if I'm being overly cautious?

  • Source: “Rock Island Mysteries” follows the adventures of 14-year-old Taylor and her friends as they explore the secrets of the beautiful and mysterious Rock Island. Each episode tackles a new mystery, with the series spurred by Taylor’s fascination with her Uncle Charlie’s disappearance and determination to find out what happened to him.
  • Happily888's current version: It follows the adventures of 14-year-old Taylor and her friends, who explore mysteries of Rock Island in each episode, spurred on by Taylor's obsession with finding out what happened to her Uncle Charlie after his disappearance.

For me that's close enough to "substantial similarity" that it should be rewritten, but if that's too aggressive of me, I'm definitely open to recalibrating. Thanks for taking a look. Indignant Flamingo (talk) 04:30, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

@Indignant Flamingo I'd say that's pretty clear close paraphrasing; some words are rearranged or removed but the similarity is still there. I've reverted to your revision. Happily888, I'm guessing you reverted because the Earwig score was low; Earwig only highlights exact similarities, so close paraphrasing is not always detected by it and the score is not a reliable metric to determine if something is a copyright violation or not. Indignant Flamingo, thank you for all the work you've done at that CCI, it is greatly appreciated. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 19:33, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

Fractional-reserve banking

Would you mind looking at this sock edit] on Fractional-reserve banking if it merits revision deletion? It's from a Kik sock and they basically pasted the content of their wiki on Mises, and very similar to edits you RD'd this summer. Didn't want to use a tag on the article to give Kik any attention. Thanks. Ravensfire (talk) 23:07, 31 October 2022 (UTC)

@Ravensfire Thank you for bringing this to my attention, done. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 23:49, 31 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I've mentioned you at this GA nomination that I'm reviewing. I encountered some potential close paraphrasing in a couple paragraphs of the article and would like a check to see if it's actually an issue or not since the source is mostly just raw facts with minimal explanation and thus might not qualify as creative expression. Alternatively, if you don't have time / aren't interested, do you know someone who can double-check? Thanks! Reaper Eternal (talk) 17:25, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

@Reaper Eternal Sorry, I've been very busy over the last few days. It looks like it's been rewritten to an acceptable extent since it was pointed out. I agree it's very technical and fact heavy so some overlap is inevitable. If I'm not available for copyright checks, DanCherek, Diannaa, and Justlettersandnumbers are some admins who care willing to look into copyright issues. No, but no thanks. No need at all.... I am very happy for my contributions for 15+ years as is, as I firmly believed and still believe in the utility of the project and dissemination of information worldwide. But no more... It was the first anniversary of the comments of another esteemed colleague User:Buidhe put and your swift action of blocking me indefinitely based on his comment and your diligent research. So I had to express my gratitude to both your efforts. werldwayd (talk) 16:16, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:35, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Old article

Hi Moneytrees, an IP noted Uppsala General Catalogue is very similar to [1]. Indeed, going back to the page's first creation in 2003, it has the same language. However, Wayback for the link only goes back to 2008, so I don't know how to see which came first. Thought I'd raise it with you due to your CCI experience. Best, CMD (talk) 07:17, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

@Chipmunkdavis Hmm, this is a complicated case. Upon further examination, I think the article was copied from the initially cited source, which in turn borrowed phrasing from the NASA site, which is in the public domain; I've added attribution. Looking further through creations from that editor around the time, it seems they had a habit of copying from sources; the creating edit of Karl Guthe Jansky is mostly copied from this source, the creating edit of Ernst Zermelo is mostly copied from this source, and they admit copy and pasting in this edit summary. Other creations from them look copied but don't cite sources, and given how old the edits are wherever they were copied from is likely dead... Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 05:49, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

Copyedits

Hallo Moneytrees, could I ask you to please run a check on my contributions (Imperial Treasury, Vienna, Florentine Diamond, Throne) so that they are all up to code or if they need further editing? Thank you. Gryffindor (talk) 17:21, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

@Gryffindor I don't see any copyright issues with the edits, although I can't see the book source at Imperial Treasury, Vienna. As a general note, I'm assuming you're relying on machine translations of sources; please use these with caution, for example you quoted from a website translation that looked pretty garbled at Florentine Diamond. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 20:37, 12 December 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. Yes the Florentine Diamond is based on a machine translation and I tried to write it properly, but what would be the best solution? Is there a copy-editor board where I could ask for help so that it's compliant but still reads well? Gryffindor (talk) 23:30, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
@Gryffindor II personally would avoid quoting from translated sources; I'm not aware of any exact boards you could ask a fluent speaker at, but Category:User de lists users who are aware fluent in German. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 05:52, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

Mentor

Hey Moneytrees,

Looking back, I am probably the Wkipedan who needs the most help with editing. Could you officialy mentor me using the Wikipedia mentorship process? A dream of mine is to become an admin on Wikkipedia, and, based on my track record I need a mentor to help me do so. --Justyouraveragelechuga talk 14:56, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

@Justyouraveragelechuga Sorry, I don't do the whole "mentor" process, but I can answer questions you have.
On "A dream of mine is to become an admin"... why do you want to become an admin? What is appealing in becoming an admin to you? Are you really sure what that might entail? The work is more complicated than simply blocking vandals and deleting junk-- you'll be confronted with difficult and surprising issues, where the "right" answer will not be immediately obvious. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 05:57, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Huh, I mainly wanted too be an admin so that I could roll back edits better. I guess being an admin isn't rhe right thing for me. --Justyouraveragelechuga talk contribs 12:44, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Account Issue

Hello Moneytrees I do not want to have the Wikipedia account anymore, is there any possible ways to remove it? Eli Tolstov (talk) 04:26, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Hello @Eli Tolstov, it's not possible to delete your account, but you can request a renaming and "vanishing" of it-- see Wikipedia:Courtesy_vanishing#How_to_request_a_courtesy_vanishing. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 14:32, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

I often think it would save a lot of headache if admins instablocked anyone who claimed to be a "former donator." Thanks for your efforts. Cheers. Dumuzid (talk) 21:26, 29 January 2023 (UTC)

Of course @Dumuzid. Sorry for the nonsense you've had to deal with on the LOTR talk page. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 22:20, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Hello I just received a message on my talk page regarding the speedy deletion of the above article. I disagree with your remark of the article being a "direct copy" of the said source. Not to ignore the fact that I was still working on it and the article could be worked and improved upon.

I hope you'll consider temporarily unlocking the article so that I can issue the concerns raised. I have no intentions to copy paste copyright work of other authors. If so you can check the list of my articles created. Thank you. ✠ Rejoy2003 ✠ (contact) 15:21, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

User:Wjemather

Wjemather has been unnecessarily undoing good edits from editors (myself and others ) for three years now. Editors have tried reasoning with that person over time, but that person does not want to listen. Several people in private chats have expressed their frustration with that person, simply because they don't know where else to turn to talk of their frustration.

That person's behaviour has not only been unproked, unneeded undoings of valid edits that no one else has ever had a problem with, but hypocritical also; the list is long of the times that that person would spitefully undo the very same type of edits that they themself have done before, throwing logic out the window. In other words, it's okay for themself, but not for others.

One other behaviour that makes that person unreasonable is making things up on the spot: An editor will do a good edit in the traditional way, but then this person in question will undo the edit with the excuse (paraphrasing), "Just because this is the traditional way is not an excuse to keep doing it that way.".

Trying to reason with that person has failed for years with many who have tried.

I've been editing on Wikipedia since 2007 and had never had any real problems from an editor until that one. I've been doing the same type of edits in the same way since the beginning, and in early 2020 that person came along and decided to be the first to take their own personal feelings and force feed them onto the Wikipedia community with uncalled for retractions that no one else had ever had a problem with. Nitpicking at every single turn, unJusifiably.

Most of that person's edits are undoings,, not additions, meaning the main purpose that person has had over the last three years has been to unneededly undo other people's edits, even when having to make up a reason to do so.

Simply to spite me, that person went and undid a good edit of mine on a page concerning a topic that they no absolutely nothing about:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=2022_State_of_the_Union_Address&type=revision&diff=1063538815&oldid=1063093800

Also last year, that person went back on a previously agreed upon standard for preparing the WGC MATCH Play page, one in which that person had willingly agreed to the year before:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=2022_WGC-Dell_Technologies_Match_Play&diff=1079435859&oldid=1079434098

It gets worse, you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't; If you do an edit one particular way, that person undoes it and criticizes you, but then if you do the edit the opposite way, that person still undoes it and criticizes you.

I would have to go and do weeks' worth of finding and citing all the examples of that person's gross, uncalled for undoings. For now, I will show a few recent examples of the kinds of edits that no one else ever had a a problem with, but this person is hell bent on interfering with anyway:

Undoing a perfectly good preparation that is done each week on the PGA Tour, for no reason ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Masters_Tournament&type=revision&diff=1141795948&oldid=1141795855

Undoing more preparation that is done as a normal thing in Wikipedia, for no reason ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template%3AThe_Masters_champions&type=revision&diff=1141796145&oldid=1141796054

And those are only two examples of a half a dozen interference type of undoings in the last 24 hours. It takes time and trouble to go and post these here, so I'll stop there for now.

Other times, that person will try to get a page deleted, because in their OPINION the page was made "too early", something of which no one else has ever been known to complain about in recent years. There are links to show proof of this.

After three years of constant interference of spiteful, uncalled for undoings, we will not tolerate it any longer. I have been on here for sixteen years without serious trouble for 13 of them. Over the last three years, this constant hypocritical and unneeded interference won't be tolerated. Even the simple act of letting that person know, they lash back as if you are wronging them in some way, playing the victim.

Since no one has been able to get through to them because of their unreasonableness, we hope maybe you could have a chat with them to see if you can get through. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 22:25, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
