Copy Patrol

The4lines, Thanks a lot for offering help! User:EranBot/Copyright/rc is a good start. Some advice on things not covered there:
  • If you aren't sure if something is a violation, leave the report alone or defer to an admin whose in the know with copyright, like me, Diannaa, or Sphilbrick.
  • When giving a warning for copyright, use the TW message for newer users first, then use a tougher one if they've had previous warnings for copyright.
  • iThenticate reports tend to be better than comparisons. When checking a violation, they should be your first choice.
  • Be wary of unattributed in wiki copyring, which happens a lot. If the given url has the word "wiki" or "blogspot" in it, then that's almost always a sign of unattributed inwiki copying.
  • I'll do some reviews on copypatrol right now and then relay what I did in each case so you can get a better understanding. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 16:12, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

The4lines, Alright, here's some reports I just handled:
A little more advice: User:EranBot/Copyright/User whitelist the users listed here are regulars at copypatrol and tend to not violate copyright. Sometimes, when you revert someone, they will come to you with a confrontational response. In these cases, be cordial and honest as possible. If you don't know how to respond, email me and I can intervene. I recommend installing User:Enterprisey/cv-revdel for easy revdels if you haven't already.

RD1 tagging

Dude - you don't have to tag it if you've already done it. :-) I mean, I'm happy to come behind you and check if you like, but once you've done it, the tag just puts it into the category and then somebody has to go remove it and if that someone is me, you know how cranky I can get. Ample examples of this crankiness are available on the list. There are so many people I have to annoy and so little time. :-D

So yeah, don't need to tag for stuff you've already done. Questions, complaints, recipes for macarons (yum), you know where to find me. ;-) Katietalk 21:07, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

KrakatoaKatie, Yeah I knew that, when I'm revdeling a lot of revisions that would be annoying to do one by one, I'll mark the article with a revdel notice using the User:Enterprisey/cv-revdel script, and then using User:Enterprisey/url-select-revdel to autoselect and revdel the right revisions. I'll usually remove the revdel notice after I'm done, but sometimes I forget to. I'll try and remember I put the notices down next time. Aw, you're never a waste of time. :-) I saw one that you had done yet tagged, and I thought to leave a note, but figured it was a newish admin thing and let it go. Then I saw a second one, and I thought I should say something in case you were having trouble with something. Glad to know it's the script, but yeah, there are some fussy admins who will dump on you like a ton of bricks for not removing the revdel tag. Wentworth Park, Nova Scotia

Hello. It is probably worth mentioning that my main employer, for the last 32 years, is the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM). I am the Operations Supervisor for the CBRM Recreation, Parks & Grounds Department, and as such, one of the things I do is edit parts of various CBRM Websites, such as: www.cbrm.ns.ca and www.makinwavesfestival.ca

Most of the 'History' is quoted verbatim from 'Ekistics Planning and Design in association with ADI Ltd. (4 December 2003). Wentworth Park Revitalization Plan: Final Report. Halifax, NS: Planning Department, Cape Breton Regional Municipality. p. 3.' so it is really our webiste: www.makinwavesfestival.ca that is copying from our 2003 report, not the other way around. Again, we own both websites anyway.

Toward the end, before it was disbanded, the 'Friends of Wentworth Park Society' was also in our hands (as we had to manage teh government grans and other funding, as well as the tenders, contracting, and overall supervision) so I feel I can use information from that source, as we ended up owning those copyrights as well: www.wentworthpark.org

The society's final was Board of Directors:

  • CBRM District 6 Municipal Councillor Ray Paruch (now deceased)
  • Manager, CBRM Parks & Grounds Bill Murphy (now Director, CBRM Recreation, Parks & Grounds, Buildings, and Facilities)

Most of what I have 'borrowed' from those sites, that I have used in Wentworth Park, Nova Scotia was written either by me, or someone who works for me, so I felt it was easier to use it, rather than write it all over again. There is probably an official way to give a release on what I've written elsewhere, so I can use it here but I don't know how to do that. Any suggestions? Ken Heaton (talk) 20:34, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Moneytrees, I'll read through the WP:DONATETEXT shortly and try to figure out how that works. I had a quick look at The conflict of interest guidelines. It seems to me, as I'm writing the Wikipedia stuff on my own time (over the weekend in this case), because I think it notable enough for inclusion in Wikipedia, and I don't expect any compensation for my work here, and I'm attempting to keep an impartial point of view, I think I'm OK there, others may not agree. Surprised by your deletion

I am really surprised that you deleted the information as I clearly referenced the author in the text itself and attributed it to her. MyMoloboaccount, Actually, ignore that revert, I'll restore the text; I'm guessing you copied from this site, which notes that the article is CC BY 4.0 licensed. The pdf version I saw in the iThenticate report doesn't have that license on it, which led to the revert. A {{CC-notice|cc=by4|url=|author(s)=}} should have been used for attribution, although most people don't know about it so it's ok. I'll remove the warning, sorry for the hassle. The problem wasn't really with the quote (which I think you forgot to add an ending " to) but more the very close paraphrasing around it. When it comes to quoting a source and how much you're allowed to, its situational and I don't believe there's official guidelines, but 7 to 8 sentences is around the max amount allowed. Regarding your reverts on the basis of copyright

You reverted my additions to the article Status of women's testimony in Islam on the basis that there is no evidence showing the source material is in the public domain. The source is based of the book (الطرق الحكمية) Al-Turuq al- hakiyma or Judicial methods. The author is Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya who died in the 14th century.Therefore all his works are in the public domain. I am also going to follow your advice and add my edit again using quotation marks. I also changed the website citation to a book citation.

Dzeko & Torres Discography Page

Hi Got your message...I guess I should go back to the Wikipedia manual... I edited the band's page and copied all of its discography information to his main page. It didn't make sense for it to have a band page, and then a separate discography page. So I was trying to put in a removal request, just of the Discography page. The4lines, Crow, and Echoedmyron; let's compile the discussion here. |||| removed the text because he thought it came from this wordpress site, which is a mirror and didn't attribute wikipedia. You can tell it's a mirror because it was published on February 24, 2019; Looking at the articles history, there is no way that text could have been inserted before then. Not ||||'s fault, the wordpress should have attributed us+ he's new to the copyright scene. The article was examined as part of Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Cacrats, specifically this edit; compared with the source, the article is clean, meaning that there was Red XN no violation.   • Yep came to the same conclusion from Earwig comparisons. One tip for |||| on CCIs, the article lists the diffs in question and they bytes added on the CCI page, so when you see that the editor added 500 bytes to an article, removing 24kb may not be the right thing. That can be difficult. There's usually a copyright notice at the bottom of the page, which will say something like "© blah blah. All rights Reserved", which means we can't use it. Sometimes It'll be "© blah blah", which means we might be able to use it. In that case, somewhere on the the website there'll be a page that says something like "this website is in public domain" (which most American government sites are) or something like "Content is licensed under CC-Blah Blah license". We can use most CC content, except for stuff tagged as NC, aka Non-commercial, plut a few other licenses, which you can see at my CCI guide. Sometimes finding the copyright page for a website can be really hard, so I recommend looking up something like "Name of website copyright" which will usually bring up what you're looking for. As usual, if you're confused about something, just ask me; it's a confusing area that even most admins don't know too much about. Moneytrees🌴Talk🌲Help out at CCI! 00:30, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

here, where some crazy added something like "Call this death number (phone number)", which I'm noticing was actually Oversighted. If you don't know, oversighting is when something is completely hidden from public view, even admins can't see it.
