AFAIK, a facsimile publisher cannot claim copyright to the original material. Giles' journals were published in S Australia in 1889 so they're PD regardless of whoever decides to reproduce them. If the publisher added some new artistic or creative material to the original that would be copyright. I've not seen the Hesperian Press version, but the original text appear in several eBooks (eg. Gutenberg), so there's no issue about copy-pasting from there. Moondyne 01:17, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your help (that was my first "front page" edit so I had some worries). I compared my hard copy of Giles's book with the Gutenberg site text and they seem very close - same text, same drawings, same appendix, same index. The cover art is owned by the National Gallery of Victoria. My hard copy came with six maps; five of them are marked: "London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington" (the original publishers). The sixth map doesn't have any publisher's marks; perhaps that map is the claim for copyright. When I get more time I'll read Giles's book again and make notes of Gibson's contribution to exploration; from memory it was blowing into horse's noses and catching them by the tail.Dugong.is.good.tucker (talk) 00:27, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

How impossible

Ridge Hill was a stopping place/points location, and stahams quarry siding up slighter and the in some records they have identified points/changeover locations, and goosberry hill is higher - ridge hill and stathams are not half way up the hill - slightly lower SatuSuro 03:57, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

It's great having different people looking at this stuff as we'll all most likely take different views or perspectives on the thing - mine obviously focussing on the results and the campaigns, as that's the easiest to source from newspapers and the like. 1911's my target for FA, by the way (probably not entirely obvious from my contribs, as most of my work on researching it and building a content library has been offline to this point). DELETION OF MY WORK

Hi Moondyne


re. wikipedia's removal of List of number-one albums in Australia during the 1960s which I originally produced.

Basically in standardising my lists, they have cut out the "weeks at number one" category, which I used in my research for my radio show, which I why I put the lists up there in the first place. The year by year format detracts from the presentation, I believe. More about it here:

I had absolutely no idea that this list was going to be deleted and I am not at all happy that someone in North America has downgraded my original work (You will see my reasons listed above). I was not notified that Classirockfan42 was going to do this, nor was my permission asked for in doing this. Basically some of the information in my voluminous lists were removed without my permission and will take a lot of work to reinstate them. I don't want to do this just because someone in America didnt like the formatting I used!

Those changes to the template are fine; and you don't—there's no way I can answer that. Wikipedia works by consensus for everything and no-one owns any article. Every edit page has a notice "If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly ... do not submit it." If you push the envelope with original research or hard-to-explain tables, you have to expect that sooner or later someone will come along and challenge you. You need to understand the acceptable standards the Wikipedia community expects and you'll usually have no problem. Moondyne 00:52, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

I spent a few hours looking for those maps this morning. From what I could tell, that State Library of South Australia does hold them, but there seems to be no incentive to make them accessible. I spent some time trying to fathom their system but emerged baffled. If I lived near the Emerald City, I might attain enlightenment after a while. Oddly enough, I came across a SA library-published version of Australis Twice Traversed,, priced at $99 ($139 for with deluxe edition) As usual, if I said what I thought, people would be offended. I hear you brother! Its sad but probably not surprising how many libraries have difficulty reconciling their public duty in sharing their booty with the need for fund-raising. A bit like them claiming copyright on old photographs which are clearly public domain and for which they are just custodians of while demanding permission be given before mere mortals can touch. eg [1]. Any thoughts of a Hakluyt Society sort of setup for Australian explorers? (Someone else please say yes) There are plenty of documents, maps, biological samples, etc. Much of it has not been published in a usable form. The Giles book we've discussed is itself, a conflation of, according to his author's notes:" the journals of the first two expedtitions formed a small book, which was mostly distributed to the patrons who had subscribed to the fund....The account of the third found its way into the the South Australian Observer, while the records of the fourth and fifth journeys remained as parliamentary documents...."

Ahh Mr Moondyne. Sometimes there are generally positive items about WP. Have you forgotten Daniel Pink's epochal feature in Wired? Reporters aren't concerned with whether things are positive or negative - we report what's happening. Vandalism of WP entries, and repair of those articles, for example. List of Australian #1 albums list decision reversal

Wikipedia recently decided in favour of keeping 3 pages, recently marked for deletion

in an AfD case.

As the reasons / argumets for keeping these are basically the same for the recently deleted part of this same series List of number-one albums in Australia during the 1960s, how does one go about requesting for the reinstatement of the original work/page?

By the time I realised the page had disappeared in late August, it was too late to do anything about it, as it had gone. I had not logged in for quite some time under my username.

Its a bugger. In simple terms, the answer is here. I also had missed the earlier discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of number-one albums in Australia during the 1960s but we must respect the views of the people who participated in that discussion from which there was a clear consensus to delete. So the route we now need to go down is probably Wikipedia:Deletion review. Before doing that though, I've dropped a note at PhilKnight's talk page for his thoughts. Clackline was a railway junction - if i got it right (i toook out my confusion with going south to york as well ( iam sure the line to york was through northam or just south - cos my maps are under stuff) one line went north to toodyay and the other went to northam - it was an important timing and tearoom/toilet stop in the much earlier railway history but by 50's i think the stops were not so prevalent as northam was the stop lcation - as always i couldnt believe we didnt have it as an art - good on ya starting it! The gooseberry hill air crash and clackline and york ones need more material. Ghost towns

Your question is a good one - some are purely abandoned - some completely immersed (Crotty in Tassies west coast) - while some a mers ghosts of former selves - I suspect a lot depends if there is a definition at the main article at which the term becomes the category. I consider cue, mount magnet and yalgoo ghost towns of their former selves - but i suspect no one else would call them that - you are most welcome to change it out of the category/article - its just i was taking the imperative of it being referred to as one from the the king book summary which had it listed as being one. I have a copy of the golden trail book and cd - havent check it for how it refers to the old places - also realise if havent got the off like flies book in there as a ref - i think a lot of the people phtoographed and interviewed were in the old dying towns SatuSuro 10:51, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

The town was first settled in the 1890s as part of a gold rush but today is a virtual ghost town. Finding that in the Sandstone article is somewhat disconcerting as well - maybe we need to have a vote at the Wa noticeboard whether we allow virtual ghost towns or not, or by what criteria they are extant as towns and what point they become ghost - hum SatuSuro 02:49, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

The class names are fixed. If you have a microcode-enabled browser or browser plugin, the browser will parse it to produce a geolink. The same applies to addresses and telephone numbers, where you can get the necessary data as a vcard to export to your addressbook. Answer: My stern defense of Bluegoblin7. He was accused of sock puppetry and several admins were calling for his head stating in-factual information, out of stress of the scenario of him being indef blocked I called one of the admins a joke. Which resulted in no less than four hostile "Final warning" messages from admins both on ANI and my talkpage somewhat WP:BITE like but never the less, Feeling provoked I ranted on thier talk pages and more specifically, likened the adminship to joining a brothel. I was consequently blocked by Arbitrator Deskana for 3 hours. (a cool down block) No one would over turn an arbitrators block, official or not but several admins saw its as nothing other than a punitive call down block. This was further confirmed when Deskana stated that the block was not for attacks, personal or otherwise. To make it even funnier, SteveCrossin (whilst using PeterSymonds account) reviewed one of my block requests (denying it) and protected my talk page. I was acquainted with Steve. The final slap in the face was when MBisanz removed my rollback and account creator rights (which had absolutly nothing to do with the situation) when my block expired torting "I do not believe you have the community's trust to use such tools and have removed them". This was fixed after allot of begging that I should not have had to done (hence the so called "Feuding" with him as if he did nothing wrong). If that wasn’t enough whilst I was blocked I was talking about what I was going to in re to: Deskana when I got unblocked since everyone was asking, At the mention of possible rfc/u I was banned from the IRC server for 24 hours for "Annoying people", funny, no one said I was annoying them but, I went to appeal the block in the op channel and I was told on entry "no" by the same op and also banned. I has to private message a op who I knew was un-biased to get me unblocked. After all this "drama and shit stiring" in the eyes of admins and ops, ive been labled a troll and was banned on entry to IRC SWMT (before this latest thing) so I may as well play the part.

Thank you for cleaning up the edits from Noel Ferrier. I'd like to ask your help and advice. Noel was my uncle, and was born in 1930, three years my father's junior. The IMDB has persistently been incorrect in this respect (in spite of my requests) and I note that in your recent edit you preferred the IMDB to the Australian Government web site "It's an honour". Robert Young has pointed out that Flemishboy may be a sock of Bart Versieck, and I am inclined to agree, given the nature of their contributions and even their very username. A quick overview makes me think it's a worthy CheckUser case, under Category F, but I wanted to see what you thought, as the blocking admin. I'm not sure that it's entirely obvious, just very likely. Sandgropers and the tremendous value of wikipedia as a reference source

Noticed a recent reversion you made on Western Australia after someone had deleted the reference to the Sandgroper. Glad you did that. Six months ago, way before I started editing WP, I stumbled across the WA article, clicked on the sandgroper link & found the photo of the actual sandgroper. It was all quite a revelation. Born in Perth & apart from working o/s for a bit I've lived here all my life. I'm old enough to remember Channel 7 selling 'Sunny Sandgropers' for Telethon in late 70's (from memory you could buy them at any branch of the R&I Bank or Golden Fleece petrol stations!) Somehow it never occurred to me that a sandgroper was a real insect. I always thought the name "sandgroper" was invented by someone in the east and related in some way to Perth people spending most of summer at the beach. From that Wikipedia article, not only did I finally find out that sandgropers are real, but that I actually have them in my backyard. Only ever see half a dozen in late summer. For years, I've wondered what these weird creatures were & was very careful first time I saw one because of the large size and slight resemblance to a scorpion. Even thought I'd found a new species and considered getting taking one to the WA musueum to confirm my discovery though I'm glad I found the WP article first!) All the texts say they are found in sand dunes which implies beachside I guess but I live in the southern suburbs on relatively flat ground about 8 km from the coast yet I've definitely got them in my garden. I'll try to get one to pose for a photo next time I spot it. G'day Glen; nice to meet you. From a scientific point of view, a "sand dune" isn't just the sandhills next to the beach; it is any sand that the wind blew in. About half of the Swan Coastal Plain is on dunes formed over thousands of years by the wind blowing beach sand inland. The other half has soil that washed down off the scarp over thousands of years. If you're 8 km from the beach, you are almost certain to be living in a dune system, even if the ground is fairly flat where you are. Hesperian 04:37, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

VH-ULU Klemm L25-1 (construction number 131). This little two seater was imported in 1929 and registered on 22 August 1929 to Hermann Christian Ittershagen of West Subiaco, WA, who was the German Consul General for WA. He was also the local distributor for Lanz tractors, and told local newspapers at the time that he would train eight of his tractor experts to fly the Klemm in order to provide service to his far flung farmer customers throughout West Australia. There was a delay in getting the aircraft flying because the Civil Aeronautics Board did not recognise its German Certificate of Airworthiness. In the event it was assembled at his private airfield at West Subiaco and test flown on 18 August 1929 by his company pilot Harry "Cannonball" Baker. Baker flew VH-ULU to Sydney for the October 1929 East-West Air Race from Sydney to Perth and on arrival back in Perth reported no mechanical failures of any kind. In January 1930 Ittershagen had floats fitted to VH-ULU, and he formed a new company, Aerial Commerce Co, whose letterhead boasted a "Klemm Seaplane Station, Nedlands" on the Swan River near Perth city. After fitting of the floats, this aircraft was the first to fly to Rottnest Island, with pilot Harry Baker landing in the sea at Thomson Bay in January 1930, prior to the Rottnest Island Airstrip being opened in November 1930. The floats were actually removed several months later, and it was used for joyriding at Perth and Rottnest Island. Damaged when wingtip hit spectators at West Subiaco WA 25.06.1932, cancelled from register 16.1.33. Aircraft was retired to Ittershagen's hangar at West Subiaco airfield and remained there with Klemm VH-UNG and Spartan VH-UMQ until 1940. That year VH-ULU was purchased by a local, and DCA investigations in Oct 1941 revealed that he had flown over 200 hours of local flying from the West Subiaco aerodrome with no pilot's licence and confessing complete ignorance of all aviation regulations. Not only that, but for fuel, he and his friends had stockpiled 120 gallons of car fuel in contravention of the wartime fuel rationing regulations! The ultimate fate of the little Klemm is unclear, but a wheel identified as being from VH-ULU turned up in a Perth tip in 1958 (Information supplied by D. Eyre, June 2008)

Articles that seem to have obviously non-notable subjects are only eligible for speedy deletion if the article does not assert the importance or significance of its subject - there is no attempt to assert the importance - it is a mix of half english half indonesian list which is the curse of the Indonesian project - lists with red links.

I only have a little flatbed scanner and have no problem doing the odd page here and there, but can't be bothered doing more than that. The wear and tear of scanning is not a big issue for me—the long-term benefit I'm sure would outweigh that. Treaty on Certain Maritime Arrangements in the Timor Sea

Hi. Noticed the copyright note after the deletion of the treaty content. The individual articles were NOT a wholesale copy of the treaty, but a summarised and simplified version. Some of them include commentaries on controversies over the articles, with the relevant references. Surely they do not infringe the Commonwealth's copyright on the treaty text. Hi. Thanks for your reply and explanation. I understand your concerns about misleading summaries. My approach to pages on treaties is that they should tell the reader a little more than just a brief one paragraph statement on what the treaty is about. I also feel that referring the reader to the original text of a treaty may not be ideal as ploughing through a treaty can be pretty tricky, which is why I believe Wikipedia articles should address and discuss the issues that a particular treaty covers. To address your concern of people mistaking the summary for the text proper, maybe it would be better for the article to be organised according the issues covered by the treaty, instead according to the article numbers. The summary description would then have footnotes with the relevant article number. As for discussions on particular articles bordering on POV, I have been as careful as possible to include all sides. Each argument has a footnote which refers to the source of a particular POV, usually legal articles, parliamentary submissions and NGO publications. I believe nuances should be written and explained to the reader, and this is the best manner in which to handle them ie. with proper references to sources and authorities. I am basing this on the structure my law school lecturers forced us to follow for our essays (I am no longer practicing, however). Anyway, it is the beauty of Wikipedia that any mistake/inaccuracy made in an article is quickly corrected by the community at large. I have redone the CMATS article in this manner. I find what you wrote quite insulting. I will have you know that I have made tons of edits to Wikipedia and here is my back up for what I wrote (if people are blocked from making correct edits, then I am appaled):

a) See the talk page for proof that the number of hours of sport is 12

b) Sports for 12 hours a week is compulsory

I did not add the Wil Wheaton bit initially but such a person really does exist. Since my edits are not considered constructive, I can cease from editing that page provided that all of this is forgotten. However, I am completely serious in what I wrote about 12 hours of sport being compulsory. Sorry if what I wrote about the school focusing on very few areas of study is inaccurate. But please add that 12 hours of sport/week is compulsory.

Please see this. Notice how long the discussion went just to change one stub template. I don't want to revert your edit in the fear of edit warring but the algebra stub template was also there for a long time and was recently changed.

By the way, I expect you don't watch that page so how do you know that I changed it? Please don't trace my edits and revert them unless they clearly violate Wikipedia rules. Anyway, there a mathematics admins who do that (if at all it is necessary).

I will post something about this on the administrators noticeboard (and Wikiquette alerts) if you continue spamming my talk page. If you really strongly are against me, then I suggest we contact User:CBM (a mathematics administrator) for his opinion. In fact I will contact him. However, until them, spamming my talk page will make me angry and won't resolve the issue (I am disappointed that an admin can know so little about these policies).

Before you block me, consider the following:

a) Will it help, threatening to block me three times?

b) Blocking me will be disruptive because I make 20 contributions (usually) per day.

However, if you still feel the same way, I will report you to Wikiquette alerts but first I will contact User:CBM.

A-G

Dredging up my ancient memories of the situation... IIRC, it boils down to a lack of data: the Parliamentary Handbook lists the A-Gs up to 1890, but not subsequently.

I have a vague idea that there was a legitimate reason for the Handbook to do so: the A-G was an "official" executive appointment before 1890, but after 1890 it was just another portfolio. I'm not sure what I mean by "official" here; maybe it was originally written into the constitution that someone had to be appointed A-G, and the A-G had to be a member of the executive.

I'll have a look at the Handbook tonight.

Category:Singaporean Rhodes scholars

Hi! I notice you've made Category:Singaporean Rhodes scholars a subcategory of three other categories. I think Category:Rhodes scholars and Category:Singaporean people are obvious choices, but I don't agree with Category:Singaporean academics for several reasons.
First, very few Rhodes Scholars have gone on to be academics (c.f. Notable Rhodes Scholars).
Second, neither of the two current members of the category are academics: one is a headmaster, the other is a student.
Unless you have some reason not to do so, I suggest this category be removed.

I played around with the archive.org idea, but it sucked; I think I'll stick with manual processing.

I've scanned the first 19 pages (i.e. cover, preamble, contents and first chapter), although I'll need to replace the front cover and plates with colour scans as the opportunity arises. More importantly I've scripted the processing so that I can generate a DjVu file with ease. Watch it grow at Image:History of West Australia.djvu and s:Index:History of West Australia.djvu!

Mysterious discussion

I have just read all of the discussion at Wikipedia:AN#User:_Moondyne_and_User:_Sarah. I never heard of this until it was closed. The discussion leaves me in the dark as to why he was blocked. Apparently I would have to follow a large number of links to find out. Is it unreasonable to expect that such discussions would be clear and explicit about the reason for blocking? I followed ONE of the links and found an objection to his edit to the algebra-stub template. The issue of his edits to that template was discussed at very great length in the appropriate forum and I seem to recall that he ultimately went with the consensus, although I didn't follow the discussion in great detail.

I've noticed that "Topology expert" tends to be lax about various issues of grammar, style, and conformance to Wikipedia style conventions, but that's not a reason to block anyone. He is obviously a competent professional in his field who has made worthwhile contributions here.

If the discussion linked to above is not the appropriate place for people like me to find out why a user was blocked, then what is? I think things like this should be done openly, not behind closed doors. Michael Hardy (talk) 18:57, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
