Question about a recent comment

Hello Mz7, I have a question regarding your [14] recent comment on a sockpuppet investigation. In your comment you said "The use of multiple IP addresses is not prohibited unless the user intends to mislead editors into thinking they are multiple people...I don't see evidence of that intent here". Since you said the editor was not misleading others (like a sock), should they still be blocked for violating the 3RR rule (4 reverts in an hour presented in the sockpuppet investigation)? Elijahandskip (talk) 04:09, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

@Elijahandskip: An edit warring block would have potentially been justifiable, although I would point out that the page Battle of Chernobyl is now semi-protected, so it appears that a block might not be necessary anymore to prevent the editor from continuing to edit war. Technical news

  • Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have the deletelogentry and deletedhistory rights. This means that those in the Researcher user group and Checkusers who are not administrators can now access Special:RevisionDelete. The users able to view the special page after this change are the 3 users in the Researcher group, as there are currently no checkusers who are not already administrators. (T301928)
  • When viewing deleted revisions or diffs on Special:Undelete a back link to the undelete page for the associated page is now present. (T284114)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/SPI/Cases

This is only being updated intermittently. The last two were 1h40 apart. -- RoySmith (talk) 00:07, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

@RoySmith: Thanks for the heads up. Taking a look. Mz7 (talk) 01:10, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
@RoySmith: Looks like the root cause is simply that it's a slow day for SPI. Although the bot saves edits every 10 minutes, if no one edits any SPI case page within the last 10 minutes, then the table it saves will be identical to the most recent revision, causing it not to record any new edit in the page history (i.a. a null edit). In this case, since no one has edited SPI since Jack Frost made this edit 1h40m ago, the table has remained unchanged. You can join #wikipedia-en-spi connect to see a feed of recent changes to SPI subpages. Mz7 (talk) 01:25, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
Interesting, thanks. -- RoySmith (talk) 02:10, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
I've noticed that while the case list is being updated normally, the changes aren't being reflected on the main SPI page in a timely manner. Unless I manually purge the page, the list at WP:Sockpuppet investigations remains hours out of date. Not sure what could be causing this - it only started happening a few days ago. Spicy (talk) 20:25, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
@Spicy: Yeah, I have been noticing that as well. Not sure what could be happening there. If it becomes annoying, one mitigation strategy could be for me to have my bot purge the main SPI page any time it makes a change to the table. Mz7 (talk) 04:19, 28 April 2022 (UTC)

Request

I offer this by way of explanation, not as an excuse. As you alluded to what provoked me: I'm afraid I'm guilty of editing while intoxicated. I think I was annoyed because it seemed that someone had falsified a DS notice when adding it to my page.

As you correctly point out, neither of those, nor any circumstance, would give cause for such comments, of which I'm quite ashamed. If it is within your authority to revdel the edits from public view, without affecting operation of the diffs to those with access, I will be grateful. Cambial foliar❧ 03:32, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for the explanation. I don't think this is severe enough for revision deletion, and with any luck, the edits will hopefully fade into obscurity. Mz7 (talk) 04:34, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Mz7,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 812 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 859 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
