Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Inappropriate closure of election proposal

Hi. On 01:44, 9 September 2023 you closed my proposal about the election of Arbitration Committee members, with the rationale, "hatting this one per WP:SNOW". I reverted your closure on the grounds that i find it highly inappropriate to close a proposal without even giving it a chance to have some discussion, besides this system is used by organizations, read Sortition.

To me it is amazing that an election proposal by a veteran editor would be haphazardly closed just because. Evidently you don't seem to know the history of the origins of Wikipedia and how ridiculed was the idea of making an encyclopedia written by random largely anonymous contributors. I call on you to respect the proposals process and don't try to WP:OWN it without even giving them due time to be discussed. Thanks. Thinker78 (talk) 02:05, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

Protection of pages targetted by sock network

Hi, Thanks for handling the recent SPI case at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Magichero1234/Archive. Can you please see if the pages that have been targetted by these socks for years can be protected as well. I identify these as below:

Gotitbro (talk) 10:15, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

@Gotitbro: Apologies for the delay in responding. I sampled a few of these pages. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like these articles are edited frequently enough to warrant semi-protection under the protection policy. Generally, we only apply semi-protection for a few days or weeks at a time when vandalism is unusually frequent or disruptive. In cases like this where the articles are only edited a few times a month, I'm afraid the solution is usually to simply add them to your watchlist and revert as needed. If there is a particular page that is the target of unusually frequent disruption, I'd be happy to take a second look. Mz7 (talk) 01:15, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
I see, though I was basing the request on the strength of recent page protections that have been granted due to extensive sock disruptions in the WP:CASTE space (as can be seen at User talk:Abecedare) which this does somewhat fall into.
But in any case please do take a look at Hyderabad State, Deccan (and Deccan Plateau), Hyderabadi Muslims and Khubani-ka-Meetha. These are regularly targetted by this network here without amiss. Gotitbro (talk) 03:37, 27 September 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Mz7,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

I believe you're the blocking admin for EnPassant—I seem to be a few months late on this, but the user seems to be fairly adamant on keeping the Retired template on their page despite being a user blocked for sockpuppetry, something they've claimed you're fine with. just wanted to bring it up with you. Darling (talk) 15:46, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

@Darling: I can understand the view (established in this discussion) that the {{retired}} template should not be used by editors blocked for sockpuppetry, but at the same time, I don't really see it as a big deal. It seems the main argument for disallowing the retired template is that it would be "misleading", but the editor's user page already has a tag which makes it clear they were blocked for sockpuppetry, and if they attempt to appeal their block, it will be evident that they did not retire voluntarily. Personally, I would just leave the editor be, especially considering that, before they were blocked, they did make many thousands of constructive edits. Mz7 (talk) 22:26, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) I believe where we left off in that discussion (after a mere six years of discussion) was that it's okay if they're not socking around the block. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|she) 22:33, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Aha, I missed that the specific wording is that it would be inappropriate to use the template if they continue socking after being blocked. I am on board with that. I'm not aware of EnPassant continuing to sock after I blocked their account, so using {{retired}} should be okay. Mz7 (talk) 00:41, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
