Recent changes

  • You can download the new version of the Wikipedia app for Android. The new version shows lead images, better galleries and content from Wikidata. It also has many other new features.[1] [2]
  • Programs and bots still can't read information about images on many wikis. You can see the list of wikis with the most files to fix. Wikipedia in Italian, Indonesian and Japanese language have the most files to fix. On the biggest wikis you should use bots. Bots can add information templates to groups of files. You can ask other tech users to help you.

Problems

  • All JavaScript on Commons was broken for a few minutes on Tuesday. It was because of old code in the HotCat tool. The same problem happened on some Wikipedias on Wednesday. It is now fixed. [3]

Deleted Page Ryan Rafferty

Hi User:Raffobeast: Per the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ryan Rafferty, the subject was deemed non-notable per a lack of independent, reliable sources that provide significant coverage about him. User:NorthAmerica1000 Hi NorthAmerica, Thanks for getting back to me. As you can see in the original article that quite notable links had been provided. The article also contained a reference to an official charts page where the artists work had appeared under his stagename "Weekend Warriors" (See position 11) chart. Under Wikipedia's terms and conditions this falls under notable achievements. I am waiting on one more source of information to come and I will provide this to you so you can see. Hi User:NorthAmerica1000 Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I do appreciate your feedback regarding non-reliable standards but I think in this instance the article does in fact meet the minimum standard for inclusion as per the below.

How to meet the requirement, An article must be based upon reliable third-party sources, and meets this requirement if:

Reliable: A third-party source is reliable if it has standards of peer review and fact-checking. In general, the more people engaged in checking facts, the more reliable the publication. Third-party: A third-party source is independent and unaffiliated with the subject, thus excluding first-party sources such as self-published material by the subject, autobiographies, and promotional materials. Sources: At least two third-party sources should cover the subject, to avoid idiosyncratic articles based upon a single perspective. Based upon: These reliable third-party sources should verify enough facts to write a non-stub article about the subject, including a statement explaining its significance. Once an article meets this minimal standard, additional content can be verified using any reliable source. However, any information that violates What Wikipedia is not must be removed, regardless of whether or not it is verified in reliable third-party sources.

Also another notable reference for Ryan Rafferty's page which wasn't included in the original page was the collaboration between himself and Micky Modelle under the stagename "Nimrod" which was included in a very reliable BBC radio track listing entry- source here. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/davepearce/tracklistingarchive.shtml?20061217 (See Nimrod - My Life).

As you can see this does establish the minimum criteria.

If you could grant my request I will see that more references and links are included and the page is improved. It would be greatly appreciated.

While there were only three participation at the deletion discussion, consensus for deletion was existent there. Disruptive conduct on AfD

Can you see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Indian century (3rd nomination)? The nominator who previously edit warred on this article as well as Chinese Century seems to have a habit of making copy-paste argument and copying the sentences of opponent[5] and heavily wikilaywering. OccultZone: I recommend for you to just leave the comment in place at the AfD discussion, let the user have their say, and to counter their argument in the discussion with your evidence to the contrary. Regarding the discussion at the link you provided above in re the Chinese Century article, if you feel that the matter cannot be solved through discussion, check out options to resolve the matter at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard, where other editors can opine, WP:THIRDOPINION and the Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard. I have carefully read your edit summary and I think that you might not be aware of the reason behind that removal. Xharm had copied this thread copied from his UTP,[6] much of the discussion of this thread was about his conduct and also concerned other article Indian Century. Whenever we are discussing about multiple articles, either a board or UTP has to be used. He may have copied this thread only to deflect the criticism made on his UTP, and by bringing this all to ATP, much of the discussion would clearly seem illogical. It is removable per WP:REFACTOR, "Removal of off-topic, uncivil, unclear, or otherwise distracting material." Duly noted, and I am aware of WP:REFACTOR. Much of the discussion does concern the Chinese Century article, though, and since another user commented, it seemed best to reinstate the content. Another problem is that throughout, he is continuously copying and pasting my messages as an answer to me, and also never forgetting to include "Stop making personal attacks", when I have never made one. It is usually better to remove such inflammatory discussion that is not going to serve any purpose. Neither I am interested in discussing same thing on multiple talk pages because I had already brought this to ANI. Sure we can see if NeilN is fine with removing it.   • The delete !votes following the nomination don't say much other than pointing to a guideline page. As such, relisting in this instance is not necessarily incorrect. Is your !vote based upon sources listed in the article, or is it based upon the overall availability of sources about the subject after source searching? Closure of the "Behavioral Competencies" AFD

Hello, I've noticed that you have recently closed the AFD that I nominated at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Behavioral Competencies as "no consensus". I found it a little amusing because it is impossible to form consensus when nobody even makes a comment in a period of three weeks. But jokes aside, should I have just used the PROD instead of AFD? And looking forward, is it possible to tag it for PROD now? My understanding is that it is not allowed after an AFD, but in this case it is possible to argue that an AFD didn't happen. Hi Athomeinkobe: Per the letter of the rule, I'd have to say no to a prod. Per WP:PROD, it states "PROD is one-shot only: It must not be used for articles PRODed before or previously discussed on AfD". Despite the fact that no discussion occurred, the article was nominated for deletion and listed in the AfD logs, so I can't recommend for you to go against the rules. Hi NA, where is that Wikipedia policy wording re: deletion discussions that says an AfD nomination is considered a Delete !vote and therefore a nominator is not allowed a bolded Delete !vote as that would be a duplicate? Hi Softlavender: I have seen that before, but I haven't been able to locate it. Perhaps it was removed from wherever it was, perhaps only to be found in a revision history page somewhere. Deletion nominations are considered as an !vote though, and nominators should not add another !vote below the nomination. NORTH AMERICA1000 18:29, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

Advice on AfD

Hi, I'd like to ask your advice about WP:Articles for deletion/Red Bull House of Art. I was participating seriously, but now it feels like I've been getting fooled. This appears to be a continuation of an offline feud. Some of the participants seem to know each other and are making comments that the rest of us can't follow. There are allegations of harassment and sockpuppetry, one editor claims he created the article for money, etc. From their histories, some are new accounts or have returned after a long absence for this. You have made your case there, and one of the !votes is not guideline or policy based, ("I was paid $120 cash by a lady with green hair to write this article. She didn't give me her name but said she's a friend of Gregory Kohs."). Hi User:Is not a: I have read the discussion before, as I often go through the AfD logs and read discussions ahead of time prior to relisting. Participation at the discussion was low, the keep !voter did not strike their keep !vote, and under the merge !vote that user stated "I'm inclined to agree." The latter part is not a clear "merge" !vote or absolute indication of changing to a merge, but since they said they have an inclination to agree to a merge, I closed the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Russian National Association as such.   • There was a security issue on Wikimedia Labs. Many Labs tools were down after the issue was fixed. [11]

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since January 14. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 3. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 4 (calendar).
  • The "Save page" button in the VisualEditor toolbar is now blue rather than green. This is the same as on the mobile site. [12]
  • You can now edit pages on the draft namespace with VisualEditor on the Russian Wikipedia and Hebrew Wikipedia. You can ask to get VisualEditor for a namespace on your wiki. When your community agrees, ask in Phabricator. [13] [14]

The problem here is the part where it states, "in support of Silver Spring products, services and technology", because while the image is being used for non-commercial use on Wikipedia, the image is not being used in support of Silver Spring products, services and technology, and per their terms, no other use is authorized.   • Hi Piotrus: You were for deletion, a user was for a merge to Life in Color and a user was for a redirect to Committee Entertainment. As such, there was no consensus for a particular action regarding the article. The discussion was leaning toward a merge or redirect, but it was inconclusive, and two different article targets were stated in the respective merge and redirect !votes. It would not be functional to merge the content to one article and then redirect it to another, and all user opinions must be considered. Note that I have added the WP:NPASR clause to the close, so you can renominate the article for deletion if you'd like. NORTH AMERICA1000 22:02, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Northamerica, I'm Lee from Singapore. I am very disappointed with Gunkarta that can not accept the fact. Northamerica, believe me,i did not make any changes without the facts and sources. What I have found, the statement from anthropologist from the University of Gadjah Mada, Dr Lono Simatupang, according to him, the soup called soto is a mixture of various traditions and not Indonesian cuisine alone. In it there are local influences and other cultures. Noodles in soup, for example, comes from the Chinese tradition. China was the one that had the technology to make noodles and glass noodles. He also state that soto is also the possibility of influences from Indian culture. There are several uses of turmeric soup. It's like a curry from India, he said. Because the soup is a mixture of various traditions. Denys Lombard in his book Le Carrefour Javanais also suggested that the origin of soto was a Chinese soup called caudo. I did not deny it is origin from Indonesia and it is a part of Indonesian cuisine, but i only modify it as Indonesia cuisine derived from Chinese cuisine in infobox. The issue, Gunkarta can not accept the modification of the infobox even agree that it derived from Chinese cuisine. For me, infobox is very important such as full article. All the facts in the infobox should be adjusted as in the full article, however it must be in short but clear(see the soto talk page). Put in Indonesian cuisine in infobox as a creator with not mentioned the truth fact, it is good in ethic of writing? I just make little modification it derived from Chinese cuisine, 'caudo', but based on facts and sources, thats all. So, am I wrong, Nothamerica? I hope you can understand what is my intention. I know you are very knowledgeable person about the cuisine and you can make good judgment. User:Lee788
Hello Gunkarta and Lee788: I recommend continuing discussion on the talk page for Soto (food), as has been occurring. Through discussion, hopefully a long-term compromise can be realized that all can agree upon. Regarding content in the infobox, I recommend having information within it that is predominantly backed by reliable sources, with content about theoretical or lesser-known potential origins of the dish in the article's body. Recent software changes

Problems

  • MediaWiki was reverted to the previous version on February 4. It was because of a performance issue. It was restored later. [18]
  • UploadWizard was broken on February 4 because of the revert of MediaWiki. [19]
  • All sites were broken for 30 minutes on February 5. It was due to a network problem. [20]

Software changes this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki has been on test wikis and MediaWiki.org since February 5. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from February 10. It will be on all Wikipedias from February 11 (calendar).
  • You can have one user page for all wikis. Your Meta user page will show if you don't have a user page on a wiki. You can test this tool on test wikis. [21] [22] [23]
  • You can search for media files in VisualEditor more easily. Images are bigger and you see the size and license. [24] [25]
  • It is easier to review your changes when you save the page in VisualEditor. The window is wider. [26]
  • You can read the latest news about VisualEditor. You can now join weekly meetings with developers. During the meetings you can tell developers which bugs are the most important. The first meeting is on February 11 at 20:00 (UTC).

Future changes

  • Administrators will soon be able to delete change tags used fewer than 5,000 times. [27]
  • In the future you will be able to have personal lists of articles on the mobile site. [28]
