⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Loch Fyne Seafood & Grill logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:32, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi, the nominator has submitted a QPQ. Are you interested in continuing with this review, or should we call for a new reviewer? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 08:10, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

  • @Yoninah: I may bow out of this one at this point. Ultimately, my review still stands, particularly:
  • Is the content of the hook properly verified in the article by the source in the article?
  • Does the article contain plagiarism or close paraphrasing?
These matters have not been particularly directly addressed. At the time I performed the review, I did so because the previous review with the tick was so deficient, it would have been entirely inappropriate for the hook to have gone to prep. Feel free to mark for new review at will. North America1000 08:33, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
OK, thank you. Yoninah (talk) 09:37, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #023, 25 Nov 2018

There are now 4,180 portals.

Will we break 5,000 by the end of the year?

I know we can. But, that is up to you!

( New portals are created with {{subst:Basic portal start page}} or {{subst:bpsp}} )

Happy Holidays

Spread the WikiLove; use {{subst:Season's Greetings}} to send this message

Jingling along

The following portals have been created since the last issue:

Keep 'em coming!

By the way, the above list was generated using this Petscan query. It can be easily modified by changing the date. The data page (under the Output tab) also has options for receiving the data in CSV or tabbed format, which some operating systems automatically load into a spreadsheet program for ease of use, such as copying and pasting the desired column (like page names).

In closing

We'll keep it short this issue.

Expect a flood next time. Or the one after that.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Northamerica1000. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. For the September drive (results), of the twenty-three people who signed up, nineteen editors completed 294 copy edits.

Our October blitz (results) focused on Requests, geography, and food and drink articles. Of the fourteen people who signed up, eleven recorded a total of 57 copy edits.

For the November drive (results), twenty-two people signed up, and eighteen editors recorded 273 copy edits. This helped to bring the backlog to a six-month low of 825 articles.

The December blitz will run for one week, from 16 to 22 December. Sign up now!

Elections: Nominations for the Guild's coordinators for the first half of 2019 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. A bit of help with DYK

It has been a while since I've done anything at DYK and was hoping you could guide me a little in wrapping up the following older nom. The issues appear to have been corrected and the DYK has been sitting there for a couple of months, so...

  1. do I replace the existing review with a new one, or do I edit/add to the existing one?
  2. do I create an entirely new review?

The editor worked on the issues today. I cleared it as a Third Review but I'm not sure what else I need to do. Atsme✍🏻📧 16:46, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

  • @Atsme: I noticed in your third review that you stated all criteria have been met. So, as long as this is the case, it should be good to go. I would have done what you did, just provide a new review. If you want everything to be really on the up-and-up, you can add various criteria of WP:DYKRULES to your nomination to further qualify it. Below are the points that I use when reviewing for DYK.
  • New enough?
  • Long enough?
  • Any copyvios?
  • All ¶ have at least one inline citation? (per D2 of the DYK Supplementary guidelines.)
  • QPQ done, if required?
  • Is hook content interesting to a wide audience?
  • Is content of the hook verified with an inline citation in the article at the end of the sentence stating it in the article?
  • Got milk?
Hopefully this answers your question, I think. North America1000 21:12, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
Yes, thank you! Just 2 more questions - (1) do I add the above checklist as an indented list under my final review? (2) Is there a queue where I add the article name as completed or is that done by a bot? Atsme✍🏻📧 21:31, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
@Atsme: Regarding above: 1) yes, that would work. You can format it any way you'd like, really. Whatever's clever. 2) User:WugBot automatically moves approved entries to Template talk:Did you know/Approved, so you don't have to do a thing. Chillaxin, North America1000 21:35, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

AmericanAir88 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Northamerica1000 to be Editor of the Week for his persistent efforts in fixing and expanding articles. He is a fantastic administrator. NorthA does several maintenance tasks and ensures that WikiProjects stay in check. NorthA has done a tremendous job on reducing the amount of bare urls and cleanup tags on articles. His work on Food and Drink articles also shines as he ensures quality in every article. On WP:CLEAN, NorthA assists with the cleanup and archiving of nominated articles. NorthA also takes care of AFD, AFC, and Vandalism using a fair jurisdiction. He helped me turn List of water parks from a mess to a refined neat wikipedia list. We still collaborate on the multiple cleanup jobs and the list. Wikipedia would not be the same without the help of NorthA and his role in maintenance. NorthA is one of the funniest, nicest, most motivated users I have had the pleasure to work with. An incredible admin. User:7&6=thirteen said; "Consistently good and prolific quality content creator. Lots of DYKs. Pleasure to work with; works well with others. User:Davey2010 added; "Amazing editor and amazing admin. Agree with thirteen they're a pleasure to work with and they thoroughly deserve this, FWIW I'm surprised this wasn't given to them years ago, Easy support. -User:MelanieN shares; "I agree with these sentiments - North is a very valuable editor here.

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
  • A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.

Technical news

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Help with article?

Hi!

I'm Ed. I was looking at the list of participant of the Wikipedia Apps project and noticed you are a member. And also a Wikipedia admin. I wonder if you might be willing to give some feedback to proposed changes I have for the article about the app Letgo, which is the second most downloaded iOS app? The suggested changes are here: Talk:Letgo#Reactivating_Edit_Request. I should note that while I am an experienced Wikipedia editor, I have a conflict of interest as a paid consultant to Letgo, which is why independent review is so critical. Best wishes, BC1278 (talk) 20:17, 4 December 2018 (UTC)BC1278

Hi BC1278: I don't mind the request, but I may not become involved in this matter. I am working on other matters, and have not been as active lately on-wiki as in the past. North America1000 01:03, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

What happened this week.

Dear @Northamerica1000: and @The Transhumanist:,

This week I had a family emergency where my mother was in the hospital. After 4 days, she is thankfully ok with a clean bill of health. This is what explains my absence. Another factor was that this hospital stay made me cancel my vacation to Phoenix and my front seat NY Rangers hockey tickets. I had severe depression on Monday but it is finally going away. It will be gone on Sunday which is the day I was supposed to get back.

Anyway, long story short I am just explaining why I wasn't active these last few days.

Also: For work we have decided that every month we will have community service hours for each employee. I need to have written proof that I do this as a community service volunteer basis hobby. I would greatly appreciate it if one of you could either write a paragraph confirming that I do more than 4 hours a month or could refer me to someone who would do that.

Thank you very much, Ill be very active again starting today. -AA AmericanAir88(talk) 23:59, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

@AmericanAir88: Sorry about your mother's health, but it is great to hear that she is now well. I am declining on the notion of providing any evidence of your editing activity on Wikipedia for your employer. Sorry, but I'm not comfortable performing this activity. I'm not sure of any avenues on Wikipedia where this request would be considered. North America1000 08:35, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
@Northamerica1000: Thank you so much for the good wishes. I totally understand your decline on my request, I get it. However, is there a way to pull up a log of hours? Thank you anyway for the consideration. AmericanAir88(talk) 12:06, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
You could print out pages of your contribution history to demonstrate a quantification of your editing time. North America1000 17:06, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

I am glad to hear that your mother is doing well. And I'm sorry and impressed to read of your personal sacrifice. She is lucky to have you.

Concerning community service, you need to find out what the definition of "community service" your employer is using. It may be the same definition (and system) as used by the courts. If so, then the service can be done only for organizations on an approved list.

If Wikipedia volunteer hours count, then there are two possible approaches you can take, that I think of:

1) Contact the Wikimedia foundation for a letter. But, this will be complicated by the fact that your account is anonymous. You will need to reveal and verify your identity. I do not know if they have ever provided this type of letter before, or who in the organization to contact.
2) Prove directly to your employer what your time commitment on Wikipedia is. To do that, you tell them what your account name is, and then post a unique keyword or phrase that they give you onto one of your user pages, so that they can see that it is in fact you (and explain to them how to view a diff). Then you email them a link to the diff, and a link to your contributions page.

I hope you can work this out with your employer and/or the Wikimedia Foundation. Good luck.

If you do work out a solution, please share your experience by expanding meta:Wikipedia as community service (this link works for me, even though it is showing up as red). Job-related community service isn't covered on there yet.

By the way, if you would like to keep your main account on Wikipedia anonymous, you could set up an additional account, and do your community service on that account. See WP:MULTIPLE and WP:SOCK.

Sincerely,    — The Transhumanist   19:49, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

@The Transhumanist: Thank you very much for this response. My employer will be thrilled to see this. By the way, I completely automated the Portal:California Roads. Could you check my work? Thank you. Also a portal I made Portal:Macroeconomics seems to have article spew issues. AmericanAir88(talk) 21:21, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello Northamerica1000,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

What is the connection with Austria? What is the local name? Xx236 (talk) 08:16, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

  • Upon consideration, I have removed some content from the article (diff). It may not be an Austrian dish, but rather, in the context of the source, simply a soup that the author ate while in Austria. North America1000 15:33, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
So perhaps rather Cabbage soup on the basis of Sauerkraut? Xx236 (talk) 08:27, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
It's unclear what you're suggesting directly above. Is this regarding Austria? If so, feel free to expand the article if you can find a source that provides a connection between cabbage soup made using sauerkraut and Austrian cuisine. North America1000 22:35, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 13

Newsletter • December 2018

This month: A general update.

The current status of the project is as follows:

  • Progress of the project has been generally delayed since September due to development issues (more bitrot than expected, some of the code just being genuinely confusing, etc) and personal injury (I suffered a concussion in October and was out of commission for almost two months as a result).
  • I currently expect to be putting out a proper call for CollaborationKit pilots in January/February, with estimated deployment in February/March if things don't go horribly wrong (they will, though, don't worry). As a part of that, I will properly update the page and send out announcement and reach out to all projects already signed up as pilots for WikiProject X in general, at which point those (still) interested can volunteer specifically to test the CollaborationKit extension.
    • Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Pilots was originally created for the first WikiProject X prototype, and given this is where the project has since gone, it's only logical to continue to use it. While I haven't yet updated the page to properly reflect this:
    • If you want to add your project to this page now, feel free. Just bear in mind that more information what to actually expect will be added later/included in the announcement, because by then I will have a much better idea myself.
  • Until then, you can find me in my corner working on making the CollaborationKit code do what we want and not just what we told it, per the workboard.

Until next time,

-— Isarra 22:44, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #024, 26 Dec 2018

Last issue, I mentioned there would be a flood, and so, here it is...

Portals status

We now have 4,620 portals.

And the race to pass 5,000 by year's end is on...

Can we make it?

The New Year, and the 5,001st portal, await.

( New portals are created with {{subst:Basic portal start page}} or {{subst:bpsp}} )

Evad is back!

After disappearing in mid-thread, Evad37 has returned from a longer than expected wikibreak.

Be sure to welcome him back.

Improved cropping is coming to Portal image banner

User:FR30799386 is working on making {{Portal image banner}} even better by enabling it to chop the top off an image as well as the bottom.

Many pictures aren't suitable for banners because they are too tall. Therefor, User:FR30799386 added cropping to this template, so that an editor could specify part of a picture to be used rather than the whole thing.

Upgrade of flagship portals is underway

Work has begun on upgrading Wikipedia's flagship portals (those listed at the top of the Main page).

So far, Portal:Geography, Portal:History, and Portal:Technology have been revamped. Of course, you are welcome to improve them further.

Work continues on the other five. Feel free to join in on the fun.

Spotting missing portals that are redirects

In place of many missing portals, there is a redirect that leads to "the next best topic", such as a parent topic.

Most of these were created before we had the tools to easily create portals (they used to take 6 hours or more to create, because it was all done manually). Rather than leave a portal link red, some editors thought it was best that those titles led somewhere.

The subjects that have sufficient coverage should have their own portals rather than a redirect to some other subject.

Unfortunately, being blue like all other live links, redirects are harder to spot than redlinks.

To spot redirects easily, you can make them all appear green.

What's new in portal space?

Here are the new portals since the last issue:
  1. Portal:17th century
  2. Portal:18th century
  3. Portal:Absinthe
  4. Portal:Abuse
