I am writing in response to the notibility alert on Singapore International Energy Week's article. My colleague Tanya corresponded with you previously on this article.

Aaron, the main reason for the doubt on the notability is that it's a new event! It only started last year, and this is the second occurance. However, as it stands, there is sufficient information that I have removed the "notability" tag - although this would not prevent another editor re-adding it should they feel it was necessary.
Basically, coverage of this year's event in reliable sources would help to show its notability, as will confirmation that the event will be held next year (also from reliable sources). -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 13:37, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

Cleaning up of Editor Review

I also recently filed a request to be reviewed, but the project seems to be falling apart. So... I guess I'll go ahead and cleanup the project now before it gets even worse? (I have had previous experience cleaning up dying projects WP:ABUSE) It would be great to someone to work with, are you interested? Netalarmtalk 23:24, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

I'm going away for a week, so can't do anything for the next week (I've just quickly logged into Wikipedia to check messages, I might get a chance to tonight or in the morning, but if not this will be it until 2nd Nov!). When I get back, I intend on looking at some of the backlog that remains and doing some reviews. The thing with the reviews is that many editors do not know about it, and I think that most of the editors who do tend to be busy on Wikipedia! As I say, I'll do some reviews after my holidays. Once an editor has had 1 review, it will automatically be archived 30 days later, so if reviews get done then they will be archived within a month! However, I have removed aserisks from editors with a review - the ones I left were when the comments seemed like criticisms about one action rather than a review of overall actions. You send a message by editing his page, but you should not use abusive language. Your 2 edits on the The Hutchins School article were vandalism, as were your edits on the The Friends' School, Hobart and Special Forces (United States Army) articles. Your first edit on Utility Monster's page was vandalism, and your final edit there was a personal attack. No worries. With regard to the archive bot, it looks at the last date stamp, not the level of heading. In Xeno's case, if the last date stamp in a conversation is more than 2 days old, it gets archived. Xeno has deliberately made the first entry with a date far into the future so that that thread doesn't get archived.
With regard to notifying others, I noticed that they hadn't been done, and assumed that you had been distracted by Real life! Hope you don't feel I was treading on your toes! -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 12:10, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

If I had a (insert unit of money here) for every time I'd done something foolish, I'd not need to work ever again! If no one had done something on the Project in a year or so, then it could be counted as dead - but as others said, there's plenty of reason to keep it! newbie and editing

Hi, Im new to wikipedia and am interested in editing a sentence in an existing article. I had a go at the sandbox, though doesn't help much. When I went to edit the page, a blank box appeared which scared me from doing anything, as i wasn't sure if i would wipe out the original article??? I assumed that editing would have brought up the original article and i would edit/replace the sentence in question with the correct information. btw i don't know what a talk page means though it feels as if i have read pages and pages of info re editing and guidelines, i hope this makes sense and i sign off properly, kind regards julietteJuliette Rose (talk) 13:27, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

  • If you are on the article page, you can click on edit at the top of the page, which will come up with an editing box like the one you used to put the message on my page. On an article, it will show the current text and markup (those are things that look like [[blah]] and {{this}}.
If you tell me what article you were trying to edit, I can give a bit more specific advice!
With regard to talk pages - these are pages where people can discuss things. Each article can have one (if one doesn't exist, the discussion tab will be red. If you click on this, you will get an empty box similar to what you described - that just means that there is nothing on the page, and anything that you add is new! Users have one (like this one) - your one is (at the moment) showing as a red link, as yours hasn't been created yet. I am about to add a welcome message with useful links on your one, so it will no longer show a red link, but a blue one - one of the links there is "how to edit", which might be useful to read!

Also, if you're worried you'll mess things up, use the edit summary to make it clear you're not sure about what your doing (preventing accusations of vandalism) and then go to the history page and check the article diffs. You're too kind! If I recall, our common articles were Wabigama and some of the fouding members! I remember we had a disagreement about the notability of the club! However, I rmember helping find information about a couple of the founders (and I'm glad that those article are still present!). As I said at the time, I don't aim to get articles deleted - if reliable sources (even if it's just a couple of them!) are all I look for - and I quite enjoy finding them. William A. Dembski article

Please refer to the talk page of the specified article and look to the second half, where most complaints as to the biased nature in which the article was created and is kept are stored. Some are years old. I do not appreciate being directed to an opinion grave. I have read the criteria for speedy deletion, as I also have WP:NOTPERFECT. At least 3 admins do not believe that this is an attack page. Although admins are not perfect, that does not mean that they are always wrong!
Yes, some of the discussion points on the article's page are up to 2-1/2 years old. However, many of those points appear to have been addressed. Again, I highly recommend that you leave a message on the talk page giving specifics about why you feel that this article is an attack page. What exactly do you feel is inaccurate? Can you provide reliable sources showing this to be the case? If you re-insert a speedy deletion tag, you are running the risk of being blocked - you have been made aware that you should not do this, and your replies indicate that you have seen the messages about this.
Again, I strongly suggest that you discuss this on the article's talk page. It is very rare that an article that is this old (more than 6 years old) requires deleting in its entirety - it is certainly possible that specific words/sentences/sections might need removing or improving. However, this is a discussion for the talk page of the article, rather than unilateral action.
You said that you have read the criteria for speedy deletion - I do not see where in the article it disparages or threatens Dembski, which are the words used in the Speedy Deletion policy. However, for a speedy deletion to be required, all (or the vast majority of) the article needs to be disparaging or threatening Dembski. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 08:32, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

I did see your 2 comments on the talk page (left just over 2 hours ago) - and to be honest, I do not know enough about this subject to comment on it - and I have no desire to use the limited time I have available at the moment to look into it. I would suggest that you leave more than a couple of hours for people to comment! As the editors on Wikipedia are from all over the world, I would leave it at least 24 hours before deciding that no one is paying attention. Also, I noticed that in the "Perakh quote/piecemeal treatment of writings" section, you did get a reply (from dave souza), who indicated that your opinion was against that shown in reliable third-party sources. I would again suggest that you take this up on the talk page - respond to dave souze (I realise that their reply was only made about 20 mins ago, so you may not have seen it yet); wait for a response to your comment at the "Peer review, Nature, and UD" section. As I say, I do not know this subject well enough to be able to comment, and as I have to go out soon, I do not have time (or if I'm honest, the inclination) to look into this in the detail which would be required.
However I do know that there is no reason to delete the entire article! As I have previously said, if there are specific sections that can be improved, that is one thing - wholesale deletion is not a viable option, I would venture to suggest!
Continue to discuss it, allow people the chance to respond - and go from there. As this is an article about an American, I would expect that most of the editors with the relevant knowledge will be in America - and as it is the early hours of the morning over there, they are unlikely to have seen your comments yet!

I am in Hartford, Connecticut, the United States of America. I have read every article that you have prompted me to read, incidentally, before you did prompt such. Also, there has been discussion concerning exactly what I am concerned about. The article has already been put for speedy deletion by other contributors. The speedy deletion flag was put down by other contributors. The article is consistantly biased and only speaks of controversy regarding the man's beliefs and prose. If that is not bias in your opinion, then I need to, ironically, provoke you with WP:NOTPERFECT. I am not speaking to the innaccuracy of the article. I am speaking to the bias of the sources, the obviously absurd unreliability of the sources, and the consistancy of the article it self. The article is about the man, not about how his life's work is controversial to groups of peoples. A section regarding a study or book of his should not only be concerning it's opposition. I am also very much not an admin! I am not ignoring bias - I do not know anything about this person, his life or his work. To be able to comment in a reasoned way, I would need to spend time looking into it - and to be honest, I have more important things (to me) to do, than spend hours looking into this subject. My advice to you would be to address (on the talk page) the specific sources. Explain why you consider them to be biased, something along the lines of "The book Fred Blogs by John Smith is biased/unreliable because...", "The article Am I Biased? written by Mark Jones in the September 2009 issue of "Issues in Bias Monthly" shows bias/is unreliable because...". Please note that I am not being flippant here! If you can provide specific examples with reliable, independent sources backing up your arguments, then you are more likely to get reasoned responses - people can respond to specific allegations of bias. Use reliable sources to back up your contentions of bias/unreliability - can you find independent sources to back up what you are saying?
As to whether the focus of the article is correct or not, I would leave that to people with more knowledge on the subject - which may or may not include you, I don't know! All I do know is that I am not one of those people! My gut instinct is that showing that a person is considered controversial by other people is a valid part of an article about a person. Sometimes it is in a specific "critical response" or "criticisms" section, sometimes it is not - but the mention of any controversy is part of a balanced coverage, I would have thought. If some people feel (and there are independent, reliable sources) that there are criticisms to be made, these should be mentioned in the article.
If you have any questions on other articles, please feel free to leave them! I will not comment any further on this particular article, as I think I have made my position quite clear - please do not take it as rudeness on my part! Over seventy and five percent of the one hundred and twenty-one cited sources are in direct opposition to the man, including those that are used for the early history of his career. I have already made two simple edits in the first two paragraphs, removing blatant bias. That is to ignore the fact that many of those sources are biased by nature. WP:VALID mandates that there must be equal weight given to both sides of any arguement, those sources cited must be credible, there must be sources cited, etc.. I did not give specific examples before. You do ask why? There are so many! The whole article is biased. You are responding under the assumption that the administrators were justified by their flippant decisions regarding my speedy deletion flag. I really believe that the issue is that they themselves are biased, they are flippant, they are ignorant, they are lazy, and they are too scared to consider serious deletion or major deletion of such an old article!WiZeNgAmOtX (talk) 10:11, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

I just wanted to let you know that although I opposed your RfA at this time, this does not mean that I think you should forget about it forever!

Although I was concerned over your answers to two of the questions (as I said in my oppose) please take this as a learning experience. I see no reason why you should not become an admin the the future - I just believe that at the moment you are not quite ready for it!

  • Two other points come to mind - I am not a legal expert, but others who are may know the answers to these:
  1. You may be recognised as being the "Intellectual Property Owner" - but I am not sure if that is the same as the copyright owner? I was under the impression that the IPO was recognised as having made the design (the "intellectual" bit), but that this was not necessarily the same as the copyright owner. For example, an author is recognised as the IPO of their written work, but the copyright owner is usually the publisher.
  2. The design in your IPO and the design in the article, while similar, show differences. The one the IPO refers too appears to be the original SBS design - whereas the one we have in our article is the current, slightly modified design. Again, I don't know the legalities of this.

Hi, Skater. No worries - just remember that the ACC tool only shows if a user has refreshed the screen or clicked on a tab or something in the last 5 mins. When I am looking at a request, I tend to take a while - clicking the links opens new windows, as you know, so it doesn't refresh to show that you are working on it!
Also, if an editor has to go to the toilet, get a coffee, etc - they may be away for more than the 5 mins! In general, if it is marked as "handled" do not touch it - if the time stamp is like 50-60 mins ago or more, it might be worth asking on the IRC channel about it.

  • Just so that you know, the site only shows whether I opened the request within the last 5 minutes. I take my time to evaluate it (especially at the moment when I've got a slower connection than usual) - but as a rule, if it's marked as being "handled", please do not take over. As you will know, when you click on the links for block lists, etc, it opens a new window. This means that you haven't refreshed the page, and if the checks take longer than 5 mins, it will show you as not being on the site. This does not mean that the editor isn't doing anything! In future, leave it, and assume it is being handled - if it has not been closed within 45-60 mins, that'd be different - but I'd been handling it for 10 mins, and had almost finished checking (I had to do the "List" and the "Google" checks first, and then I was going to create it. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 18:08, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Do you have access to an e-mail account at the domain (i.e. something@goldstarpr.com)? If so, don't tell me what it is here (although a user page, it is still very visible!) - just basically say yes or no! Once I have that answer, I can advise you further!
With regard to the licensing - unfortunately, whether the picture goes on Commons or Wikipedia, the licensing that we require the image released under means that you can't prevent people from "adapting" the photo! I see from the IRC chat (I wasn't monitoring it at the time, being busy with other stuff) that this was discussed with you by AJCham.

Hi Wayne - I'm not sure why you contacted me (especially as you have made no other edits on Wikipedia, apart from the one to this page!). I don't read or speak German - I used Google Translate to see what all that was about. So, I can see that you are "American Rockabilly- And Rock 'n' roll musician and songwriter. Cogswell wrote in the late 1950s and early 1960s hits for stars such as Chet Atkins, Skeeter Davis and Floyd Cramer." The problem that I see with this article is that there are no sources of information! I don't know what the policies on the German Wikipedia are, but on the English Wikipedia, we like to have sources of information from reliable, independent sources, which confirm the information in an article.
What we would need from you are some sources of information which confirm the details in the above article's text. A quick search on Google News revealed no hits; Google News Archive revealed a few - but none about you'; Google Scholar had a few hits, but they all basically had one-line entries along the lines of "Wayne Cogwell wrote... "; Google Books results are similar to the Scholar results. Google Search had a few mentions about you, but I didn't notice any sites we would count as reliable for our purposes.
Without reliable sources, there can't be an article.
Perhaps you could contact the 3 editors on the German Wikipedia who created and edited your article? Perhaps they could tell you the sources they used.

Well, I don't think there's any hard and fast rules/procedures on that, but it seems sensible that the two co-noms are in contact with each other. I seem to remember that I approached my first nominator to tell him someone else had offered to nom as well, and did he mind co-noming. Something like that (it's buried in my talkpage archive if you're bored!). Have you done an editor review, by the way? They can sometimes be helpful, though under far less scrutiny than RfA. Onto your 2 references: the Straight Times one is an interesting read, but I will need to read it carefully to see what facts can be used in the article! A lot of it is Cheam's opinions, which cannot be put in the article - but I will glean the facts and insert them!
The People one is more useable - it is a factual report, and so I can insert facts from this more easily!
I will do this during the next few minutes. Thanks once again for coming to me with these references - the fact that I am inserting the information helps to ensure the article's neutrality. I know nothing about the SIEW, and have no particular interest in it - so I can write in a neutral way!

Actually this sort of stuff was determined to be deletable a while back (where if I recall correctly, I did not feel them as evil as others did) -- I generally weigh in where I feel the reasons so far given on a topic are insufficient for the result sought by those already posting. Thanks for your response - I wasn't expecting you to !vote on the MfD, but I was interested in getting your take on the issue. As I said at the MfD, most times I would !vote delete on these kinds of pages, as the vast majority of them are done by editors who have little (if any) article work or Wikipedia namespace edits. In this case, I felt that the editor in question is working towards bettering the encyclopedia elsewhere, and so should be given leeway. As I noted at the MfD, the policy does not say "Games will not be allowed" - it includes the phrase about "particular if they are not contributing to the encyclopedia". Concensus has never been reached on this issue - otherwise the policy would just say "Games are not allowed." with no provision of a grey area!

Dr. Timothy Lin photograph

Hello PhantomSteve-

I am writing in regards to a photograph of Dr. Timothy Lin that my client has attempted to upload onto Dr. Lin's Wikipedia article. My client owns the copyright to the photograph by virtue of an assignment of copyright he received from the individual that took the photograph. On November 13, 2009 and again no November 20, 2009, I submitted a copy of the photograph and a copy of the assignment of copyright to Wikipedia via the e-mail photosubmission@wikimedia.org. I have not heard back yet regarding my request to have the photo displayed on Dr. Lin's and Dr. Hymers' website. Can you assist me in this regard?

  • With respect, I have no verification of your identity. I have already contacted the Church requesting permission for the reproduction of the photograph, as they are shown as the copyright owner of the image.
However, on the assumption that you are indeed Jeremy O. Osher of Boren,Osher & Luftman, I assume that when you created you account here (for which your edit to leave this message is your only one), you created it using your work e-mail address? If you did, then on the left hand side of this page, you will see a link E-mail this user. If you click on that, and send me an e-mail confirming your identity. It will show the e-mail address that you registered with.
If you did not, put your work e-mail in the e-mail address on the my preferences, and then send the e-mail. Please note, I will use WHOIS tools to identify where it came from (I would suggest that you send it from a computer in your office). Once I have confirmed your identity, I will e-mail you with detailed instructions as to how to notify the WikiMedia Foundation about the copyright situation of this photograph.
As I have already said, I have contacted the First Chinese Baptist Church of Los Angeles requesting permission to use the photograph (or one of their own choosing, if they prefer).

  • You did indeed do it correctly! I have sent you a return e-mail to your work e-mail address, detailing how to contact the WikiMedia Foundation to confirm that the images may appear on Wikipedia.
May I especially recommend that you carefully read the licencing conditions which I have referred to (although with your special emphasis on Intellectual Property, you will no doubt already be familiar with them) - and especially ensures that the copyright owner is aware of them, and what permissions they are giving when they say Wikipedia can use the image.
Also, should you contact the Foundation directly (rather than through me), could you please send me a copy of your e-mail for my records?

I'm a long time member of the Columbus Symphony. Some years ago the name was changed from Columbus Symphony Orchestra. I'm not sure why. If you need more confirmation I can put you in touch with the new CEO Roland Valliere if that would help.

  • Thank you for contacting me, Chris. A while ago, someone else from CSO contacted me about the same thing. At the time, I checked on the official website, and there was no mention of the fact that they were now known as "Columbus Symphony". Now I see that most of the referencs on the website appear to say "Columbus Symphony" rather than Columbus Symphony Orchestra. As such, I am going to move the article to "Columbus Symphony Orchestra" to "Columbus Symphony" to reflect this (if someone types in Columbus Symphony Orchestra, they will be redirected to CS). Yeah, plenty of ghits but this is one of those strange times where google will say there are 13,000 hits, but then when you go to results page 5 or 6 it says there are only about 60 - none from RS. That was my own fault - I read the conditions as being "or" not "and" as it clearly states! I'll remember next time. I am starting to patrol the backlog of unpatrolled new pages - even if all I do is add a little bit of information, tags or tidy up (although if it looks like an SD/PROD/AfD candidate, I will do that too!) Before I got mopped, I used to patrol the back end of the list. It felt less rushed somehow (how much time did you waste patrolling an article at the front when someone else was doing it too, or it getting deleted, like I did!). Problem with my watchlist

Hi Phantomsteve - thanks for your help on my watchlist issue. However, I have tried deleting them from my watchlist several times in the ways you suggest, and they just re-appear again. I think it may be some kind of virus. Also, they are deleted pages (I have never visited or added the pages to my watchlist before). The pages are called HÁGGER? and H A G G Ë R ? ? . I am concerned because I recently read a page about an anti-social, disruptive editor called Grawp, who apparently uses these names to create sock-puppet accounts. Hi Pexise. I'm sorry but I can't find those pages, as the first one was deleted in April 2008, and the second was deleted in November 2008. (edit conflict) Excuse me while I facepalm. (facepalms) Okay, my astonishment over Grawp is over. The watchlist problem seems... odd. Without knowing what Phantomsteve told you, I can only guess, but it might be that you forgot to save the edited watchlist (I've done it before). If you know you saved, try deleting them from the raw watchlist. If you've done that and they're still there, run a full anti-virus scan. According to xeno, if Wikipedia starts screwing up like that, it's almost certain to be an issue with your computer rather than Wikipedia. I know that's not exactly a comforting thought. If nothing shows up, trying deleting your cookies or clearing your browser's cache. Yes. It is generally to remove vandalism, though occasionally mistakes can be made. A user has the right to say what they do or don't want on their talk page (unless they use it for vandalism themselves, in which case, they get their page blanked and themselves blocked), but a little extra help cleaning out the stables never hurt anyone. As Thejadefalcon says, it is perfectly ok for other editors to remove vandalism. I check my history regularly, and if someone has removed something which I think should not have been removed, I just re-insert it.
