All-Interval Tetrachord

Thank you for your authorship of the article All-Interval Tetrachord. However, it is presently so short that it meets Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, in that it "It is a very short article providing little or no context". Hi S.dedalus! I'm glad to help, feel free to drop me a line if i can help you in anyway.

With regards to editing code, you seem to have grasped the basics, which is a great way to start of course! The way i learned was by keeping Wikipedia:Cheatsheet close to hand for a while (you can read a more detailed verson at WP:EDIT. Pretty much everything you need to create and write stubs is in there.

Templates are pretty simple to use, though the tricky thing is remembering which one you want for the situation you find yourself in. Basically you can consider them shortcuts to reproduce pre-written text, but and they also contain code that allows any article with a template to be listed in a given place. So, for example, there are literally hundreds of templates that are used to generate the text that identify stubs. By adding {{ethno-activist-stub}} to the bottom of a stub like Robina Qureshi, you get the text:

"This biographical article about a minority rights activist is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it."

But it also automatically lists the article in the Category:Minority rights activist stubs. Of course, this is but one example, templates can be used as navigation tools (like Template:Animal testing advocacy), as greetings (like Template:Welcome), warnings (Template:Behave) and a multitude of other uses, most of which can be found here. My advice is to try and not overload yourself with learning too many templates. You don't really need to use any beyond stubs to begin with, and overtime you will remember the ones you use more often.

A few key things to remember:

• You can express a template by simply typing its name encompassed by curly brackets: {{TEMPLATE NAME}}
• Some templates require substituting to replace the code with text. To do this: {{subst:TEMPLATE NAME}}
• Some templates allow additional customisation, e.g.{{subst:Welcome4|Rockpocket}} would reproduce a customised welcome message with a direct link to my talk page.
• You can create your own, just follow the instructions here!

Pictures are also quite tricky to begin with. If you are interested in uploading images, please be aware of the policies regarding copyright. As a rule of thumb, unless you made the image yourself it probably is not a good idea to upload it.

If you wish to add images to articles, you can read the basics at Wikipedia:Images and learn the markup at Wikipedia:Extended image syntax. In its basic form its quite simple. You simply type:

[[Image:NAME|type|location|size|caption]]

Where the words in lower case between the pipes can be a number of different operators (Location= 'right', 'left', 'center' or 'none'). Thats the basics, anyway. I would simply recommend experimenting, either in the sandbox, or using the preview function (do not experiment in article namespace though!) DIV and Watchlist

Hi! You are doing great work so far, S.dedalus, keep it up.

So you asked about the <div> </div> markup. Well that is basically a HTML command that defines a division (or section) in a page. It can be used to align text anywhere on the page (depending on the associated parameter you choose). A subset of HTML elements are currently permitted in WP. You can read about them here, including some basic examples. If you wish to learn more complex uses (like for example, its use in the notice above this message), then your best bet will be to read some HTML tutorials (like here for example).

Your watchlist is one of the most useful tools in wikipedia (in my opinion). If (at the top of the page after you log in) you click on my preferences then the editing tab. You will notice a checkbox for: Add pages I create to my watchlist and Add pages I edit to my watchlist. I check both. Now whenever I edit or create a page it will be automatically added to my watchlist. The watchlist then lists the most recent edit (including the editor who made it, the date, time and edit summary) for ever single article I have ever edited, allowing me to keep track of changes to them. This differs to my contributions page, which lists all of my edits (but no-one elses). If you check those boxes, when you are editing a page you will now notice that there is an automatically checked box directly above the save page - show preview - show changes buttons that says watch this page. You can deselect this at anytime and said article will be removed from your watchlist. Alternatively you can leave the boxes unchecked in your preferences and use the box in the editing page to opt in to articles of your choice. Either way, the watchlist allows you to keep better track the articles you have an interest in (and the associated talkpages which are added automatically when the article is). • There is no need to contact Samuel Jones to ask his permission before expanding his article. Infact, it is often a bad idea to do so, as some people get a little possessive over their own article and feel the need to edit it themselves once they are alerted to its existance. That is never a good situation, as its near impossible for them to be objective. However, in a few situations it can be a helpful to contact the subject. These include asking their permission to use an image of which they hold copyright or asking them to clarify some information. I would recommend getting the page online first, then deciding whether it would be useful to contact him.
• I'd be happy to read over anything you have. I often make drafts work in subpages, for example see User:Rockpocket/Scrapbook. You could work on a draft of the article on User:S.dedalus/drafts and then other, invited, editors could offer advice.
• Your sources seem fine to me. Often a few external links or general "further reading" type references are fine as sources for articles. Its usually only WP:BLPs, scientific or critical content that requires strict inline attribution from a reliable source.
• How long is a piece of string? Technically, editors should get a sequence of "test" templates from{{subst:test0}} (good faith) all the way up to {{subst:test4}} (final warning). However, in practice its best to judge how blatant the vandalism is and act accordingly. Give the benefit of the doubt when it isn't clear, but it it really is trolling vandalism then I might start with a {{subst:test}}, followed by a {{subst:vw}} then use {{subst:blatantvandal}} straight afterwards. If they continue after that, report 'em at WP:AIV.

Another good question, there! Despite searching, I can't find any evidence of a way to link accounts between two different Wikimedia projects. It seems people simply create another account at Wikisource using the same log in name they use here, then create Wikilinks between them: see User:ThomasV and wikisource:user:ThomasV for example. If you have no interest in the Heysel incident then how can you feel you have the authority to edit what happened when you did not have a clue to what went on? I read several books and one of them was "Football Hooligans". I did some independent research outside the internet in order to be better informed. What I wrote was not my personal or political opinion as you say. Furthermore, wikipedia is not any academic encyclopedia! It is site where anyone is free to edit and share whatever knowledge they have to offer.

Hi! Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, I was off for a short Christmas Wikibreak. The place to report vandalism in progress is WP:AIV, but there are certain criteria that must be met to list there. Personal attacks can be reported at WP:PAIN and more complex cases the require admin attention can be mentioned at WP:ANI. Alterntativly you can give a friendly admin a shout (see this list). Thanks also for the email you sent me a while back. For some reason it was re-routed by my spam filter, so I only found it the other day. I think if sorted that problem out now, but I apologise for not responding until now. Regarding the current issue - I have issued the editor with a final warning and will be watching their editing closely. Howdy! Regarding sourcing the music style of your article: although biographies should be well sourced per WP:BLP, in reality articles on non-controversial individuals tend to be poorly sourced. A general rule of thumb is that if you are providing information that would be considered unflattering or critical it must be sourced. If you are providing an description of something they have done, it should be sourced, but if it is uncontroversial and widely accepted, you can usually get away without sourcing it. Of course, if someone challenges it, then it must be sourced or they can remove it.

Regarding your userboxes. Formatting is my weakest point on the project (one of the reasons why my user space is so bare!) You could simply list them like User:C.lettinga, but i'll continue to look around and see if I can find anything to help you, but for the moment I'm going to have admit defeat! Sorry. You asked about linking to sections. You can do that. There is some information at this subsection: Wikipedia:Only make links that are relevant to the context#Subsections. Briefly, you use a "#" followed by the the subsection name. You should also pipe the link: e.g. if you are interested in linking to Jones' orchestral work you would write [[Samuel Jones (composer)#Orchestral|orchestral work]]. Userbox Migration

Hi! Userbox migration is one proposed solution to the great Userbox debate that has raged on Wikipedia for a while. Basically, the idea is to move Userbox templates to individual sub-pages of their creators. The idea being that editors can create whatever userboxes they wish, as long as they remain in their own sub-pages, and not in other namespace. Do you wish to migrate, or create, a userbox yourself? For some reason people seem to prefer to have userboxes they create in template space rather than their own userspace (I suppose they think it gives it a great legitimacy, or perhaps because it might attract more attention there). So often when they are moved, their creator will try to move them back. Move-warring may ensue. Hello -- I actually added a note to the John Adams talk page immediately after inserting Nancy's Fancy into his list of compositions. It reads, "A quick note about my addition of Nancy's Fancy to Adams' list of works, which is undoubtedly an obscure piece (I've never heard it myself). Re Music Images

Hello. Regarding you question about images, i'm afraid I may not be able to give you a definative answers, but I'll do my best. As far as I can tell there is nothing wrong with uploading images of musical notations. However, they will have to be uploaded as images (such as .png files, see Wikipedia:Preparing images for upload). It shouldn't matter what software you use as long as the output meets certain criteria:

• The notated music illustrated in the image must not infringe on someone's copyright (including that of the credited composer of the music and that of the software used to make the image), though you could possibly make a fair use claim if it is under copyright.

• If fair use isn't claimed, it should have a free license, preferably GFDL (so you should check that is compatible with the software, also). You might also wish to consider uploading free images to the Wikimedia Commons rather than Wikipedia (see Wikimedia Commons Help).

You should also be careful of having too many images in a single article, for technical reasons, and also to make sure you don't violate WP:NOT: music notation is fine to illustrate examples or for critical comment, but we shouldn't be reproducing whole large amounts of musical notation (think of it like writing about a book, we can use quotes from the book to illustrate points, but we can't simply reproduce the entire book).

You can upload images using the Upload file link on the toolbox (probably on the left of your screen). Make sure you give it an appropriate license from the pull down menus and also explain the source of the image and any claims of fair use you might make. If you are having problems, there is help at Wikipedia:Uploading images, also feel free to let me know and I can help you out - as it can be tricky until you get the hang of it.

Finally, the above are pretty much general considerations. There may well be precedent or guidelines regarding musical notation that I am not aware of (and not knowing much about music, I may be missing some important copyright issues also). So I would advise you to seek guidance at Wikipedia:WikiProject Music/Noticeboard before doing any wholescale uploading of musical notation. Rockpocket 08:05, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Once you have over 5000 edits you can check your "ranking" at Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits (I was 1963rd at the last count), but be careful of Editcountitis. Copyright violations

Hi!. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, I somehow missed your question yesterday. If the content is a blatant copyright infringement, see WP:CSD#G12, then it can be speedy deleted. First check if there is a clean revision in the page history, if so revert to it. If not, you should tag the article with the following:

• {{db-copyvio|url=url of source}}

And you can put:

• {{subst:uw-copyright|page name|url=url of source}} ~~~~

on the user's talk page. If you think it is a copyvio, but are not sure or can't find a link to the source, you can get help at WP:CV.

One other bit of advice, try and be careful of comments such as "If this is indeed the case then homeschooling is defiantly the best option" on the Ref Desk. With our limited knowledge we really can't know what "is definantly the best option", and we wouldn't want to convince some poor kid to set their sights on something that is neither possible nor even in their best interests. Its a good idea to keep it in terms of something like "homeschooling is definantly someting I would recommend" or "homeschooling is definantly someting you could consider". Suicide policy (was not so painless)

Hi. It appears that Wikipedia:Responding to suicidal individuals has not managed to make it to policy. Don't be disheartened, though, its very rare that policy is formed in that manner and so it was a huge ask to propose it as such. Nevertheless, it was a very good attempt. It was healthy that the issue was raised and discussed and the proposal will remain up for others to learn from, so hopefully it will still have an impact on future incidents. I think that image may well be acceptable under a fair use claim (see Wikipedia:Non-free content) seeing as the topic of the article is essentially the video and there is not way it could be recreated. If you agree, be sure to justify it with a valid fair use rationale. You could always ask Wikipedia talk:Requested copyright examinations if you want more expert advice. Du’a Khalil Aswad

The AINA article only says the website that originally aired the clips said the police helped kill her, they do not make any claims about it themselves. But the way the sentance was originally phrased makes it sounds like they're making the claim. I don't know anything about it, so I don't know if it's reliable or not. I guess the first step would be finding wherever it was they said that, and seeing if they attribute it to some source besides the video. If they say you can see that in the video, I think that's flat wrong - it's not obvious from watching it, and I don't think reliable media would claim it is. If they don't give another source, that would be a strike against their credibility as well, given the seriousness of the allegation and the fact that no later reliable sources have even even repeated it without the qualification that it was jebar.info that said it.

If you want to include the line, you could say something like "according to jebar.info, police officers did nothing to stop the attack and even participated..." and then give a link to wherever jebar said it (if you can). But I'd prefer we stay away from such sensational and serious allegations until we can find a real reliable source to attribute it to.--Cúchullain ^t/c 02:54, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Deleted pages

Hi. I'm afraid only administrators can see the history of a deleted page. However, in certain circumstances they may provide the information to you or copy the deleted material across to a subpage of your choosing. I can tell you that that particular page was simply a redirect to List of LGBT composers (which, itself, has been deleted). If you are interested, I see no reason why the deleted material on that page should not be made temporarily available to you. If you would like to nominate a user subpage, I will copy it over to there. Though for various reasons, it shouldn't really be stored there permanently, so when you have obtained what you need from it, you should let me know and I can delete it again. If you're just interested in why the page was deleted - then all you have to do is go to the page. In this case the admin says that it was deleted because of Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_LGBT_composers - so read that and you'll know why--danielfolsom 15:33, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi again, I have copied the material to User:S.dedalus/temporary. Regarding a list of LGBT artists, do you mean artists as in painters/sculptors? I note there is already Category:LGBT visual artists, and therefore it could be deleted under the same rationale as the List of gay, lesbian or bisexual composers. Though, personally, I don't see why it was deleted in the first place. The AfD certainly doesn't read like a consensus to delete to me. Rockpocket 07:45, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Regarding your referencing problem, here is what you do. You need to give the reference a name in the first instance, like this:

• <ref name="fcit">[http://fcit.usf.edu/HOLOCAUST/arts/musRespo.htm Music in response to the Holocaust] (Retrieve July 7, 2007)</ref>

Then each subsequent time you use it you use the following format:

• <ref name="fcit"/>

Anthony Burgess

Many people start with Clockwork Orange but while his best-known book (and do make sure you have read the full version, with Alex as a "grown-up" reflecting on his life in the last chapter), it is probably not his best. I would strongly recommend Earthly Powers for its language, exploration of ideas, and its humour. Joyce makes a cameo appearence. The Long Day Wanes (also published as The Malayan Trilogy) is also an excellent starting point. Byrne, a novel in verse about a "rampant Irish artist" and the Twentieth Century, is an astonishing read. The Enderby trilogy, about a flatulent poet and including much of Enderby's poetry, is another good entry. Of his non-fiction, I have already mentioned Here Comes Everybody: An Introduction to James Joyce for the Ordinary Reader, Homage to Qwert Yuiop is a collection of some of his journalism, and gives a good taste of his range, interests and philosophy. RFC:Conductor infoboxes

Regarding the Shneur Zalman Friedman article

Someone the AFD suggested moving the article to Wikinews, wich seems like a more apropriate place for it. Only problem is they use a difference license so we can't just copy the GFDL licensed artice over there. However since you wrote most of the article you are free to "dual license" it to also be available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 license used by Wikinews in addition to the existing GFDL license. this version of the article (before anyone else started editing it) could then be put on Wikinews, wich unlike Wikipedia do accept news articles. --Sherool (talk) 09:26, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

This is unfortunate how the article will be deleted, i don't see any argument why a news story cannot become an encyclopedia issue. Wikiprojects and canvassing

Hello. Posting notices to wikiproject boards is well accepted practice in wikipedia. However, individually canvassing wikieditors with similar points of view, as User:Yidisheryid seems to be doing, is not. No, I'm saying it's highly likely the only reason such editors have turned up at this particular moment on this particular page is because emerson7 has canvassed them in the hope they would deliver a favourable opinion. It is standard practice to issue such warnings at AfDs, RfAs etc. if canvassing is suspected. It is perfectly fair to warn other editors about it and they are free to make up their own minds accordingly. Please don't quote policy at me. Terraforming in popular culture

Hi. You recently changed the Firefly section entry in Terraforming in popular culture from "Other examples" to "Terraforming of fictional planets in popular culture", which while not altogether bad, isn't ideal. First of all, per style guidelines, editors should avoid duplicating the title of the article (or the name of the topic) in section headers. Second, since we are dealing with the Firefly TV series under the "Television and film" section, I think it's best to just merge this into the associated television and film table. If you don't have any objections, I'll go ahead and do this, however, the section still needs references so it would be wonderful if you could help out in that regard. Re the {{refimprove}} tag, which bits of the section would you say need better citation? Apart from some small specifics, I think the John Bird biography covers just about everything in the "Idiosyncrasies" section (for instance, the flagellation and arrests for vagrancy). Hi Grutness, The {{Modernistic-composition-stub}} is being used for discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Contemporary music. Why do you feel it possibly qualifies for deletion or renaming?

Hi S.dedalus (a Joyce fan?) - the reasons:

1. Where was the proposal of this stub type at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals?
2. Where are the required 60 currently existing stubs which would take this template?
3. Why does it feed directly into a permanent category rather than a stub category?
4. Why is it named as a subtype of a non-existent stub ({{Composition-stub}})?
5. Why is it named as a stub type for a non-existent permanent category (Category:Modernistic compositions)?
6. Why does it use a lesser-used adjective (modernistic, rather than modernist)?

That do? At the very least, this needed to be proposed at WP:WSS/P before being created (as is stressed at Wikipedia:Stub), so that any problems with naming and scope could have been addressed. Grutness...wha? 00:34, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Well, yeah, it is a bit bureaucratic - but there are very good reasons for it, some of which are explained at WP:STUB - for some others, have a look at my comments in the debate at WP:SFD about Yiddish-stub. The most important one is that stub templates form such an interconnected web of similar templates that trying to keep some sort of standard practice for their naming and scope becomes necessary if anyone's going to be able to keep track of them all (which is important if you're a stub sorter). Classical-composition-stub seems to be a bit of an oddity which I hadn't noticed before - the normal naming of stub templates is X-y-stub, where the X indicates a specific subtype of Y-stub.

As for modernistic vs modernist, I've just checked several dictionaries I have here, and all of them give modernist as both a noun and an adjective, and only one lists modernistic as an accepted variant of modernist. I suspect it may be a US English vs rest-of-the-world English thing (the only one that mentioned modernistic was a Websters - all the other ones I checked were Commonwealth English). unnecessary excessive extent of your deletions

Hi. I think of discussions on talk page as an opportunity to learn something and as an opportunity to eliminate confusion rather than as an opportunity to keep other people from learning something or from eliminating confusion.

When you take a conclusive action such as deleting everything leading up to a conclusive action you may be doing a disservice by keeping others from learning and by creating, rather than eliminating confusion for others. Sure we do not want profanity. You are invited to delete profanity but there are several ways of doing it which printed publication editors have used for years. One way is to replace characters which make up a profane word with alternate characters that allow the reader to know that profanity was used there. In this way you retain credibility as an editor rather than turning your self into a self appointed censor. For instance you can replace the phrase Fuck You with the phrase F--K Y-u or with the phrase F#$@ Y#%@ to accomplish the goal of editing without becoming a censor.

I'm trying to become a musician and write my own songs as well as trying to perform by my two ear (which would simplify the productive music making process) yet I'm having difficulty understanding and the steps I must accomplish in order to reach my attainable goal. And yet when I see artists like Phil Collins or Genesis who write songs with ease I envy them when I know I can do just the same though don't know where to start. You see, I don't know how to play by ear because I can barely identify the pitches of a melody. And I can't discern three or four notes played simultaneously unless played as a arpeggio. Hello Klein, sorry I never responded to your message. My academic life has entered a new stage, and I’m now all but dormant on Wikipedia. I’m not sure how the scope of Contemporary Music could be narrowed. Basically the problem is that editors who work in this field are not willing to collaborate on projects (improving Contemporary classical music for instance). It may simply be that people don’t check the project page. If this is the case a monthly newsletter might help. . . This is a frustrating situation. There really is a need for a niche project to undertake articles about contemporary music that fall between the cracks of the Composers, Opera and Classical Music projects, but the present setup doesn't have the clear sense of purpose that the other projects have. CTM scope review

Following on from this discussion, I have started to review the scope of WP:CTM's coverage on WP. There are two main possiblilies, so far:

1. We refine our scope according to the "written in the last 50 years or so" statement agreed upon a few months back and included in the Overview - Scope section on the main page.
2. We redefine our scope to include only living people and their works (while retaining the other relevent articles such as contemporary classical music etc).

The former position was agreed by consensus, of course, so redefining our scope to the latter position is a radical shift that needs full discussion and consensus. In essence, the question of redefining arises from the recent mass sourcing drama:

1. It has been suggested that CTM take full responsibility for all composer BLPs.
2. If that goes ahead, WPComposers may wish to unbanner composer BLPs and leave them to CTM (see here for example).
3. Therefore, CTM simply focusses in on those people relevent to our project but not bannered by other projects eg composers with BLPs.
4. Other articles on people are then treated in a similar way ie we would then cover BLPs only and their related articles (plus any other contemporary-music-related articles, as appropriate).

I am also looking more generally at our project's focus, especially as regards the notability criteria etc: User:Jubileeclipman/CTM. Thoughts on that are also most welcome!

Other Activity in Wikiproject Aquarium fish has slowed to a crawl, it seems. We still have a few dedicated editors plus a few new faces. Any participation is appreciated, however we really can't tackle big projects with this level of activity. Give us a shout if you want to become active again! We are now ready to restart the awards program, but no one has done it yet. If you are up for the challenge please come forward. The List of marine aquarium invertebrate species has been greatly improved by User:bondolo.

Contemporary art

Hi S.dedalus. i would like to revitalize the wikiproject contemporary art. I added some resources and edited a bit the project pages.
