ITN

Well, Destruction of ivory is now on ITN. This can be both a blessing and a curse for the article since a lot of people will have opinions about it. I'll help you keep an eye on it for a while. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 08:30, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

@W.carter: Well this is neat. That little bump to the left is the DYK. :) I guess I never thought about it, but ITN sure does seem to get a lot more eyeballs than DYK (and I suppose with the big event in Kenya it's also more timely). FYI I did a bunch of work to it this morning and went ahead and nominated it for GA. Might as well get it into the queue. Hopefully it's not too premature. :) — Rhododendrites talk \\ 17:06, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
Yep, the pull that an article gets from media, which is what put it in ITN in the first place, is usually quite significant. When I first heard the news, I looked for "ivory burning" not expecting to find anything than perhaps a mentioning of it at some ivory trade or save the elephants article, and I was fully prepared to start writing one myself. Imagine my surprise! :) I hope you get the help and inspiration you needed to complete the GAN. Once it is off the main page, you can work on it a bit more in peace and quiet. I have an article I was working on when I managed to get it to ITN and that raised a lot of help. Some day when the stone has gathered some additional history, I can bring it to GA. For now there just hasn't happened enough with it yet. w.carter-Talk 20:43, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Encyclopedias and/or Reference Works

MovePage parameters

I saw your sandbox and suggest this:

{{#ifexist:{{BASEPAGENAME}}|instructions if an article with that name already exists|that article is available, [{{fullurl:Special:MovePage|wpOldTitle={{FULLPAGENAMEE}}&wpNewTitle={{BASEPAGENAMEE}}&wpReason={{urlencode:moving draft to mainspace}}}} click here to move]}}

fullurl is a cleaner and more portable way to make url's. The double EE in FULLPAGENAMEE and BASEPAGENAMEE makes url encoding so it works if the page name has spaces or special characters. wpReason=moving%20draft%20to%20mainspace works but urlencode is more flexible and allows more characters to be used if the text is changed. Sudbury Valley School

I have undone your undoing. Daniel Greenberg is one of many founders of the school, and in many forums he has rejected and denied the claim that he founded the school. It was a collaborative process, involving many persons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Diodotus (talkcontribs) 13:04, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

@Diodotus: No problem. My impression was that among the reliable secondary sources about the school, Greenberg is typically given as the founder, but looking at the sources we currently cited (which are unfortunately lacking -- but that's another issue) it looks like I'm mistaken at least as far as they are concerned. As an aside, please remember to use edit summaries (the little text box next to where you click "save"). Changing an article to give/remove a person's "credit", without explaining why and without citing a source, is usually a red flag for vandalism or opinion (especially on a school's page, unfortunately). Thanks for the message, though. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 13:21, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

chess, again

hi.

sorry to bother you on your personal talkpage, but i'd really appreciate some feedback regarding the current form of the viewer. the critique was not very detailed, so it's possible that it looks worse now than before, but i think i did improve the appearance by consolidating the PGN and the metadata, and moving it below the controls. i also streamlined some rough edges (like, not all the buttons were the same size and such), and removed some old unused features: specifically, the size-changing slider, the "reverse" button, and some other bits and pieces. i would really appreciate it if you could give it a spin and let me know what you think.

peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 19:19, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

ping - the discussion continues in Wikipedia:VPP about the proposal - your input will be appreciated. peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 15:34, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
@קיפודנחש: Sorry, I've been trying to spend less time on Wikipedia, but all that seems to have changed is I'm avoiding threads/projects that I know will take time. That, and I was annoyed with the RfC starting in that old thread without discussion first. Nonetheless, might as well move forward. Will try to get to it in the next couple days. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:04, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
thanks. based on this edit, it seems that the source of your annoyance ceased. i am not familiar enough with enwiki politics to revive this proposal, and will be grateful to you if you can do something to get it back on track. it seems silly to me that a proposal which received in its initial introduction significant number of "support"s and not a single "oppose" should disappear as a result of a single person's disruption, especially now, that the disruption is gone. peace - קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 23:56, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
Sunday June 5, 12-5pm: Women in Jewish History Edit-a-thon

Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives.

A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Make edits! Ask questions! Be bold!

Time: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Location: Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues), New York City, New York 10011

Looks like an IP added an AfC tag for some reason....Yes, it's certainly unfit for mainspace. Created during a deletion discussion as an alternative, then the thread went in another direction. Becoming Course Instructors

Hello, @TheTrabiMechanic:, @Stinglehammer: are trying to find out how we can become course instructors/coordinators. @Stinglehammer: is setting up a course at the University of Edinburgh and wants the course page to be ready by mid-July and @TheTrabiMechanic: will be running a course at University College London as well. Best, --Flycatchr 16:18, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

@TheTrabiMechanic, Stinglehammer, and Flycatchr: Hi there. First off, I want to ping TFlanagan-WMF, who works with the global education program at WMF, as the organization I work for, the Wiki Education Foundation, is only able to support institutions in the US and Canada right now. The course instructor right is basically a license to create a page using the "course page extension" like this one. There's also another tool called the Outreach Dashboard, but I'm not entirely sure how integrated that is to the education program and/or if Tighe would recommend using one or another, so I'll defer to him. If you haven't come across these sites yet, you may want to explore the Outreach Wiki's education page and Wiki Education Foundation's materials (we can only support US/CA, but there are lots of materials anyone can use there). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 16:39, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
@Rhododendrites: Hi, thanks for getting back to us. I've already created a couple of course pages and I suppose I was able to because I was given campus ambassador rights. I'm just wondering whether it's such rights (course instructor, campus ambassador, etc) can only be granted by an administrator on Wikipedia. --Flycatchr 16:54, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

GAs

Hi there, hope you have a comfortable wikibreak. Having just finished a successful GAN, I thought I'd take a look at Destruction of ivory for its upcoming GA review while things are still fresh in my memory. There are some tweaks I'd like to do, if you don't like them, please feel free to revert them. Just thought I'd give you a heads up. Best, w.carter-Talk 09:08, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

@W.carter: These look good. Thanks. I do tend to try to stick to prose whenever possible, but you're right that the section looked a bit like a list already, so that change might make sense. As for a wikibreak... I'm so bad at those. :) — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:02, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
Bad at Wikibreaks, I can totally relate to that. :) I should be working now... I'm also pro-prose, but sometimes that may not be the best way. I'll continue with looking for thing to improve in the article later tonight. I'll keep in touch. w.carter-Talk 14:07, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
Let me just say that this back and forth editing we do right now is something I find very productive. One MOS rule may be countered by another MOS rule, one improvement lead to an even better improvement, new ideas emerge and so on. I always like having my work challenged, that's the way you learn new stuff and come up with even better solutions. Cheers, w.carter-Talk 21:53, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
@W.carter: Agreed, although given the whole quasi-wikibreak thing, I don't think I'll be able to reliably keep up a back-and-forth...but who knows :) — Rhododendrites talk \\ 21:56, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
I was only referring to this evening (or whatever time it is where you live). :) Won't disturb you tomorrow or during the weekend, you deserve a bit of Wiki-Holiday. :) w.carter-Talk 21:59, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

TWL Questia check-in

Hello!

You are receiving this message because The Wikipedia Library has record of you receiving a one-year subscription to Questia. This is a brief update to remind you about that access:

  • Make sure that you can still log in to your Questia account; if you are having trouble feel free to get in touch.
  • When your account expires you can reapply for access at WP:Questia.
  • Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, make sure to include citations with links on Wikipedia: links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed.
  • Write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, email us and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.

Finally, we would greatly appreciate if you filled out this short survey. The survey helps us not only better serve you with facilitating this particular partnership, but also helps us discover what other partnerships and services The Wikipedia Library can offer.

Thanks! 20:24, 19 June 2016 (UTC)

Time stamp only

Hello,

At the AfD for LawnStarter you signature didn't work - only your time stamp. Here is the diff [1]. I hope you don't mind me letting you know. Regards --- Steve Quinn (talk) 05:42, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

@Steve Quinn: It might be fun to change my username to User:The present time and only sign with a wikilinked timestamp. :) Thanks for the heads up. Fixed. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 05:49, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
Ha ha! That would be a good one! It would either cause confusion every day that you edit or you'd have editors checking your user page everyday to see who it is :>)---Steve Quinn (talk) 05:53, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

List of YouTubers

Hi. This is MetallicaMan800. You see, I'm Timmy Fellows and I have 112 subscribers on my YT channel. I added myself to the list because I thought it would be cool to be on the YouTuber list. The only problem is that I have made a Wikipedia artical on myself on multiple occasions, but have all of which have been deleted for no reason. And if there WAS a reason, I should have been told. In this message I'll leave the links to the two that I remember the links to, both will say that the pages were previously made, but deleted. If you could find some way to get me back on the List of YouTubers, that would be great. Thanks in advance.

-MetallicaMan800 (talk) 14:22, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

@MetallicaMan800: As I mentioned on your talk page, the way to be included in the list -- and the way to have an article in general -- is to provide evidence that there's been significant coverage of you in reliable sources. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it has a standard called "notability". Basically, we defer to other reliable sources to determine what's important. That means we don't include some important thing if they aren't covered extensively elsewhere. As I am not an admin, I can't see deleted articles, but I can see the deletion reason: "No credible indication of importance (individuals, animals, organizations, web content, events)". THat usually means the article was just included on Wikipedia for the sake of promotion or including on Wikipedia, or otherwise doesn't make a credible claim for why it's important. Wikipedia has a long list of things that it its not, and yellow pages, linkfarm, directory, platform for promotion, etc. are all in there.
Also, Wikipedia has rather strict rules about conflict of interest editing. It's a bad idea to create articles about yourself or promote yourself on Wikipedia. It's impossible to be neutral about oneself. The idea is, if something or someone is notable, others will create the article in due time. Sorry. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:31, 26 June 2016 (UTC)
@Rhododendrites: Oh. Well, if it has to be like that, then I should tell you that I have been sent 1 fanmail. Yeah, I know it's so fricking lousy, but like I said previously, I have 112 subscribers on my channel. And I'll let you check out my channel and see if it's significant enough to be featured on the list. http://www.youtube.com/c/TimmyFellows Again, thanks in advance if you can help. :) Also, here is the link to the ThatSkynyrdKid 70 article on the Wayback Machine, which I captured before it was deleted.: http://web.archive.org/web/20151026155739/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ThatSkynyrdKid_70 MetallicaMan800 (talk) 15:06, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

You may kowtow at any time, and showering of gifts would not be amiss if you wish to curry favor...

Blatant facetiousness in the title aside, the Straightgrain SPI is a perfect example of why I keep at things that I feel are problematic. Something very small ended up being the key to a much bigger issue that was unrelated to the original indicator. MSJapan (talk) 19:07, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

  • @MSJapan: I'm not quite sure I know what yo mean. Given recent history should I take this to relate to my message about Kvng? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 20:19, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

Can't this be reverted back to the last version instead of deleted? It has attracted a lot of paid editors but that doesn't mean it should be deleted. Mark Schierbecker (talk) 20:12, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

  • @Mark Schierbecker: I apologize. One of the socks imported and translated articles from other Wikipedias (e.g. Wok to Walk). I saw that one of his/her edit summaries on this article said something along the lines of "translated from the German article" and I mistakenly thought it was one of them. I see now that this was not the case -- that many other users have contributed a lot of content to this article over a much longer period so I've removed the prod and simply rolled back a few edits. Sorry for the confusion. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 20:21, 28 June 2016 (UTC)
Ah, okay. That makes more sense. I figured something like that happened. Regards, Mark Schierbecker (talk) 07:19, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Topic bans

If I become aware that an editor is violating existing topic bans for the umpteenth time that were imposed almost 5+ years ago and for which the editor has been blocked for violating multiple times over the years, what's the first step I should take? I've never reported anyone for anything before, but I don't want to waste more time on the talkpage, because I feel like we're not having the same conversation and I can see in talkpage archives on other articles that almost identical circular conversations have been going on for the past 5 years and they never get anywhere. PermStrump(talk) 11:30, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

  • @Permstrump: As an admin, David Gerard might have the better answer. I think I see what you're talking about. It looks like a fairly straightforward violation. If you want to be unnecessarily nice, you could leave an umpteenth+1 warning and see if he backs off. My next step after that would probably be to send a message to the most recent blocking admin, who also closed one of those threads that resulted in a topic ban, and who is still active. My guess is that would be all you need to do. Otherwise, however, it would be a matter of gathering the links to the topic bans, plenty of diffs worth of evidence, diffs making clear he should know this is a violation, and taking it all to ANI. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 13:11, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
    • Yeah, the N+1 warning shows your willingness to work with people even when annoyed and won't delay anything more than a day or two - David Gerard (talk) 17:23, 29 June 2016 (UTC)
      • @David Gerard: and Rhododendrites: Thanks for the advice. When you put it that way... I suppose I should make one attempt to be "unnecessarily" nice and give a N+1 warning (I think I figured out what that is from the context) the next time their editing is disruptive. :) PermStrump(talk) 04:57, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Did you know?

It's quick and easy to insert a references list.

Screenshot showing a dropdown menu with many items

Place the cursor where you want to display the references list (usually at the bottom of the page). Open the "Insert" menu and click the "References list" icon (three books).

If you are using several groups of references, which is relatively rare, you will have the opportunity to specify the group. If you do that, then only the references that belong to the specified group will be displayed in this list of references.

Finally, click "Insert" in the dialog to insert the References list. This list will change as you add more footnotes to the page.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has fixed many bugs. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are improving support for Arabic and Indic scripts, and adapting the visual editor to the needs of the Wikivoyages and Wikisources.

Recent changes

The visual editor is now available to all users at most Wikivoyages. It was also enabled for all contributors at the French Wikinews.

The single edit tab feature combines the "Edit" and "Edit source" tabs into a single "Edit" tab. It has been deployed to several Wikipedias, including Hungarian, Polish, English and Japanese Wikipedias, as well as to all Wikivoyages. At these wikis, you can change your settings for this feature in the "Editing" tab of Special:Preferences. The team is now reviewing the feedback and considering ways to improve the design before rolling it out to more people.

Future changes

The "Save page" button will say "Publish page". This will affect both the visual and wikitext editing systems. More information is available on Meta.

The visual editor will be offered to all editors at the remaining "Phase 6" Wikipedias during the next few months. The developers want to know whether typing in your language feels natural in the visual editor. Please post your comments and the language(s) that you tested at the feedback thread on mediawiki.org. This will affect several languages, including: Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, Urdu, Persian, Bengali, Assamese, Aramaic and others.

The team is working with the volunteer developers who power Wikisource to provide the visual editor there, for opt-in testing right now and eventually for all users. (T138966)

The team is working on a modern wikitext editor. It will look like the visual editor, and be able to use the citoid service and other modern tools. This new editing system may become available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices around September 2016. You can read about this project in a general status update on the Wikimedia mailing list.

Let's work together
