List of professional cyclists who died during a race

Many thanks for your additions to this article. I wanted to let you know that I have removed some of the redlinks from the cyclists' names, especially the early cyclists. It was quite difficult to find information on cycling's early days and the cyclists' deaths, I think enough information about their careers & lives to prove notability and to build articles about them would be almost impossible. (For instance, many of the names could only be found in single cites out of the German-language Sport-Album der Rad-Welt and so far as I can tell these were about the deaths not about the man or his career.) If you disagree with my removal of these redlinks I'd be happy to discuss that on the article's talk page. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 16:40, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

Re: the Randall Fox edit - the way the article has been set up, it is for professional cyclists not collegiate competitors. I know you marked the Fox entry information as a university/college-level athlete but am thinking the information doesn't quite belong in this particular Wikipedia article... Hi Shearonink, yes I agree. However, there is quite a lot of media attention for it, so he should be place in such a list. On the page there are many other cyclist who don't meet the content of the title of the page. For instance who died during a training. So for that reason I'll propose renaming the page. I would like to discuss with you some things Re: this list-article.

Honesty time: I am trying very hard not to verge into WP:OWN behavior but I would like for you to understand something here. When I came upon this "List" it was in terrible shape...no references at all, just a bare list of unreferenced names. [<-Please click on that link.] I and a few other editors, mostly German WP editor User:Nicola54 (who was able to find the physical Sport-Album der Rad-Welt refs in library archives) resurrected that sad-sack piece of garbage into the form you recently came upon. I claim no deference but the massive amount of work I put into this List...you just came upon it a week or two ago...I've been working on it and keeping it safe from vandalism and unreferenced names for almost 6 years.
Also, you have been adding bare URLs as references. I know you are a long-time and experienced editor but I am going to be bold & place a referencing hint/tip on your page below. If it is unwanted, don't get angry...just delete it. I thought maybe it might help you easily slot in references - I know it helped me when I found the original version. Please don't be insulted, I know you care about cycling very much and are a prolific editor, I'm just trying to help you out here.
The amount of names you are converting into redlinkfs in this List is troubling to me. Yes, these cyclists might have a VeloNews article and/or a CyclingArchive page, etc., but are there enough references to prove notability for having a Wikipedia article? The early names especially...believe me, I have pored through many sources just to reference their deaths, finding citable information on their careers or to prove their influence on cycling and racing?...I think will be very difficult. Maybe you have access to better references than I do, if so more power to you. I would just ask you to consider if you are going to write articles on all these various redlinked names..if not, maybe think about leaving them as plain text for now.

Shearonink, bit of a third party comment here but red links Sander.v.Ginkel places within the article, may, at the moment be useful. If any of those redlinks fulfil the notability criteria (WP:NCYC) then we need to keep them in. If this can't be resolved take discussion to WT:CYC and let a wider audience within the project comment directly. XyZAn (talk) 18:35, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

There is nothing here that needs to be resolved. I didn't say I was going to remove the redlinks, I just asked that some consideration be given to not redlinking so many of the cyclists' names. I don't know, maybe create the article first? But Sander obviously thinks that there is enough verifiable reliably-sourced content to prove notability to create WP articles for these people and that's great. Hi Shearononk and thanks for your appropriate reply XyZAn! Yes, sorry for the references, I was in a hurry and so did it quickly... Will do it better next time.

But great work on the article, and I really appreciate that you maintain him so much! This is how it should be. And yes I know how it feels when people change things to your article. But on the other hand it feels good if people start adding content in the same style or when foreign wikis start copying what you made. I have for instance the same after I added 90% of the content, table layout with colors, images etc on Suicide by pilot. Keep up the great work.

About the red links, because you deleted in first instance some of the red links, I scanned them one by one. And I think all of the red links of the cyclists I added are notable cyclists. About half of them have a foreign wiki page, and of others I found notable info. Because of that it better to leave them red so people now that they can be created. "a" vs. "an"

G'day from Oz; yesterday I edited a bunch of articles, changing "a Australian" to "an Australian". All of the articles were created by you; I have just checked your edit history and went to some of the articles you have created the last few days, and I have seen "a Egyptian", "a Indian", "a Iranian" and "a Irish". It looks like you are doing a copy-and-paste to create these articles and I just wanted to draw your attention to this as a prompt to change "a" to "an" when necessary as you insert the nationality into each. Well I guess posting the above was a waste of my time. In English, words starting with "a", "e", ""i" and "o" are preceded by "an" instead of "a". So, to pick some of your more recent creations, "a Argentinian", "a Azerbaijani" and "a Italian" should be "an Argentinian", "an Azerbaijani" and "an Italian". G'day again, it seems that you are a much more sophisticated editor than I - I do everything manually. I did use AWB for a few days about five years ago, but I found it a bit limiting and I have seen people over the years tend to make 'corrections' with AWB that were wrong. To reply, I don't know if you do everything according to the policies. At first, according to the policies, you should get a few warnings before being blocked. I didn't get one yet.. Secondly, I'm working according to Wikipedia:Disambiguation. If you see Wikipedia:Disambiguation#preparation there is written

'Move any page with a conflicting title (i.e., the same exact title) to its more specific name.

That is what I did, because there are conflicting titles: two footballers with the same given and surename: (Andrés Edgardo Pérez & Andrés Eduardo Pérez), so the name Andrés Pérez is ambiguous. So what did I do wrong? My 3rd point if you want to distinguis between the two football players, putting (soccer) behind the name what you did is not enough because they are both association football players, so year of birth should be added (what I did and you reverted..). My 4th point, as far as I know there are no different naming conventions of Colombian names and Puerto Rican names, so both they should be in the same style right? Because you reverted my move (see 3rd point) I changed the names to the same style. 5th point: Why are you using (soccer), as (footballer) is widely used for associotion football players on WP. 6th point, in your first message you are saying for a move, WP:RM should be used. For clear ambigious pages this is not needed, plese read Wikipedia:Disambiguation. For the >10,000 articles I created, I had to create many disamb pages and moving pages. Your move was unexplained, and so I reverted it - so you should have used RM rather than make a move again. Are they known by their middle names? No. Are the middle names similar enough to cause confusion? Yes. Does Puerto Rico use US-terminology (ie soccer)? Yes. Have you fixed the redirects and incoming links? Olympic progess

Thanks for the fixes! Usually if the number goes down by one (or two), someone has removed the category from the article, and it can take time to track down. Feel free to improve any on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wales/Awaken the Dragon/Core articles or start further missing articles. Lots of missing articles on Grade II* listed buildings still Grade II* listed buildings in Wales. Sciences haven't been very well covered, the only subject really, so if you feel like improving a few over the next few days go for it! @Dr. Blofeld:, my main focus is on sports biographies. However, I'm always willing to help and what I'm doing is not rocket science. I see these are great lists, and even every building in a seperate template. If every building is notable enough to have its own Wikipedia page, there is indeed some work to do ;). What we can do: I can try to get everything into excell in the way that if you change 1 number somewhere that you have another article with all the info out of these lists. But I don't know if that is enough info for a stub. However, it might be a good starting point to get an article, and articles will be created faster. @Dr. Blofeld: Actually, after thinking of it, I might know a better thing. What if we create a new template, instead of Template:Cadw listed building row: Template:Cadw listed building createarticle. In the way that the template shows the text for a new article. So if you change {{Cadw listed building row}} into {{Cadw listed building create article}} of the lists, al the prose for substantial articles is given. It's up to you. as the long as the starter entries are reasonable quality. It's not the article count which is most important with this contest though but core/quality expansions. We're encouraging stubs at the moment to get people into editing and going out with a bang! I can give you >1000 articles that are created with these kind of see also Sections, footballers, cyclists, cricketeers, water polo players etc. And for the Cat, it deserves to be in that categorie, there are hundreds of more people in that Cat. Becaise it adds nothing to the article, because it is not standard for football articles, and because WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. As for the category, because the men's sport is far more dominant, there is no need to gender-fy the category. Giant Snowman 07:03, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Stubs

While I appreciate the effort to up the article count figure, I'm getting a lot of complaints from people about your footballer stubs, as the contest was largely about destubbing and quality improvements and in effect you've nearly upped the figure of stubs back to where we started. It's a bit frustrating for people who've put the time and effort in bringing about quality improvement. Especially for the WP:Women in Red group, which I belong to and we're trying to increase the percentage of women bios vs men. Realistically, how likely is it that your stubs are going to be expanded? Do you think that it might be better to redirect a lot of them for the time being until somebody can create a proper biography? I don't want to offend you on this, but try to understand where I'm coming from, thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:56, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

In March I created all the missing women's footballers who participated at the Olympic Games, but later the year I will also create the international women's participated at other large international competitions (FIFA Women's World Cup, UEFA Women's Championship, Women's AFF Championship, AFC Women's Asian Cup, the different continental games, etc.). For this month I'm planning to create the notable Rythmic Gymnast at the World Championships and Olympic Games, and yes, they are all women. I appreciate what you're doing, yes, ideally we want articles on all these subjects. The problem is when a lot of stubs are created we just lack the numbers committed to expanding them so a lot of people see them as a mess rather than a nett positive. Years back I mainly just created stubs, in fact I've created more of them than anybody on the site. But experience told me that a lot of the articles don't get expanded in years and it's frustrating for readers browsing categories looking for something decent to read and only coming across the cookie cutter ones like the generic xxx played one game on xxx. The real gold from content comes from the articles which people put the time into writing. It's not article count which really matters to the project, it's quality of articles and writing. One GA on a very notable footballer is worth so much more than dozens of stubs I think. So while I certainly understand the "we must have an article on every sportsman" view, we lack the numbers to nurture them into articles, so effectively the site becomes more like a database, which we're really not.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:33, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld:, yes I understand your point, I also take care of this issue. However of the Artistic Gymnasts I created last month, several other editors added the medal templates to all the infoboxes. Also when I'm looking on my watchlist, I see that many articles are expanding, see for instance from today and yesterday Julien Hoferlin, Sarah Holst Sonnichsen, Sarah Pavan], Rayderley Zapata. And what I know from myself, if I read something about someone, I only add it to WIkipedia when the person has a Wikipedia page. I also note that most of the edits by the volleyball articles is done by IP addresses. So to conclude, some of the articles I created might never be edited, but some others are expanding, while they wouldn't have exist if I didn't create them. i think we should leave this as a redirect until the event takes place per WP:NOTCRYSTALBALL. We certainly cannot say that this is a list of riders who competed in the Games when the event has not even taken place yet. We don't know who will miss the race due to being sick or injured, or for having been banned for a previous drug test, or even if the race will take place for that matter. Using participant listings as references

When mass-creating articles, it's important to get it right so as to not introduce errors on a massive scale. While there are obvious notability issues related to thinly-sourced articles, the source material you use is less than ideal as (the sole) reference for biographies for other reasons too: I've noticed that the participants listings for competitions you use do not always replicate the names of athletes correctly (I've fixed a few Finnish names lacking ä or ö). This is hardly surprising because the listings were made for a specific purpose where this is not the most relevant issue, but for an encyclopedia article it is.

I also note that the issue I presented at User talk:Sander.v.Ginkel/Archive 2#Article talk pages persists. – Finnusertop (talk ⋅ contribs) 15:23, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

@Finnusertop:, thank you for your message. The gymnasts are known under these names. These are the names used during gymnastics competitions, so these names are not wrong. I adjust as many as possible names with certain naming conventions on Wikipedia, like Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese, Dutch names etc. Now I created the pages and you moved some of the pages to the original birth names of the gymnasts these names can be found on Wikipedia. Otherwise only the names as used in competitions would be known. This is the essence of Wikipedia, that people can expand articles. People are more likely to add content of the person who have a Wikipedia page. Many of the pages I created are expanded and also many with IP address users. Indeed when I create the page there is not much info, but because these persons have a page, content is added. You say 'that the issue I presented at User talk:Sander.v.Ginkel/Archive 2#Article talk pages persists'. Have you looked at these 'old' articles? These are in the meantime all tagged on the talk pages after I let a bot to the tagging of all the volleyball articles. In the above mentioned article you have added a second name "Chrysoula" to the athlete. Do you have any reliable source to support this? I couldn't find a single greek source -and hardly anyone in any other language- mentioning her with this (or any other) double first name, as she 's everywhere (websites of her team, the greek federation etc.) referred solely as "Christina Tsoukala". I noticed it after creating the "squad pages" of these championships. I checked the red links with existing articles. The site of the Hellenic Swimming Federation (KOE) shows a net.framework error and can't show details of its archived waterpolo athletes. Yet it does list that there exist three (!) athletes named "Christina Tsoukala" belonging to the federation, one of them with the mentioned middle name (Chrysoula) and her particular birthday does indeed fit to the one of the above athlete (8.7.1991). July Women in Red metrics

Hi Sander, We have a new tool by Earwig that's tracking Women in Red metrics in July but I'm not convinced it's catching all of our work. I remember that a couple of months ago, your articles didn't get picked up by AlexNewBot, so I'm wondering if there's a problem with the latest tool, too. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red#Good week for women's biographies. What I can't do is keep working on metrics by hand as it's a time sink but I also feel compelled to make sure that tools account for all of our articles. He is listed on the special page List of people named in the Panama Papers with reference. When Google it, there are many articles about him related to the Panama papers. I certainly don't disagree – I know he's in the Panama papers. However, the issue is: 1. Turnbull's own article does not mention this fact (it should if we are to add a category, per WP:CATDEF). 2. Whether or not it will be mentioned in the article's body, is a matter that has been up for discussion on the subject's talk page. The issue explored in the latter point, is that being implicated in the PP is something quite controversial – hence, WP:BLP requires that we add in the goods (plenty of WP:RS) to substantiate their involvement in the PP, which would allow for such category.
