WP:Co-op: Presentation at Wikimania 2015

Hey Soni. I've put in a submission for a presentation at Wikimania 2015 called Is Two the Magic Number?: The Co-op and New Editor Engagement through Mentorship. I'll be talking about the state of finding help spaces on en.wiki and how our new mentorship space, The Co-op, factors into that picture. Reviewing will begin soon and I'll need your help to be able to present our work. Please review our proposal and give us feedback. If you would be interested in seeing this presentation, whether you are attending or not, please add your name to the signup at the bottom of the proposal (you do not need to attend Wikimania to express interest in presentations). I, JethroBT drop me a line on behalf of Wikipedia:Co-op.

Co-op: Mentor profiles and final pilot prep

Hey mentors, two announcements:

  1. You can now make your profile at The Co-op! Please set up your mentor profile here as soon as you are able, as the pilot begins on March 4th. It isn't very involved and should only take a minute. If you need more info about what the different skills mean (e.g. writing, communication), please refer to these descriptions.
  2. Profile creation, invitations, and automated matching of editors, profile creation, that will be coordinated through HostBot and a few gadgets may not be ready for our pilot, and will have to be done manually until they are ready. In preparation for the pilot, please read over these instructions on how we will be manually performing these tasks until the automated components are ready. I, JethroBT drop me a line on behalf of Wikipedia:Co-op.

Mentors for follow-up Co-op experiment

Hey dude. I'm working with a group of psychologists to design an experiment that I think would fit well with the co-op after the pilot is completed. I'm messaging you today to see what you think of the idea and whether or not you'd like to work with me on it.

Here's the gist: We'd like to assign newcomers to small group with other newcomers who join co-op at the same time. We'd provide a flow board that would act like a homeroom. Each homeroom would contain 5-10 newcomers. There's lots of fun psych theory that suggests that newcomers fare better when they are socialized within a peer group. We'd like to run a controlled experiment to see if the being invited to a homeroom predicts success in the co-op or editing. I imagine that we'd like to make homeroom assignments as part of the co-op intro flow. Otherwise, we wouldn't want to change anything about the co-op. There would still be 1:1 mentor-learner skill lessons. We'd only be looking to add a homeroom to the periphery of the co-op to see if it has the positive effects we expect.

Does this sound like something you'd be interested in? FWIW, I've already brought up the idea with I JethroBT. He likes the idea but put it on me to see if other co-op mentors are interested. --EpochFail (talkcontribs) 16:44, 24 March 2015 (UTC

  • EpochFail, That actually sounds like a theory that could work. I really like the idea and it's certainly worth looking into and giving a shot. I'm definitely interested in helping around on this. When do you plan to invite newcomers to the homeroom (i.e. when they sign up for mentorship/ when their lesson starts etc)? Soni (talk) (Previously TheOriginalSoni) 23:09, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
\o/ I'd like to invite newcomers to the homeroom as early as possible. I suspect that the shared space would be good for helping newcomers get past the first few speed bumps. I still need to (1) get the researchers to write up a summary on meta and (2) confirm with DannyH (WMF) about Flow's roadmap and any potential extensions to logging that we'll need to do the analysis. As soon as I have those out of the way, I'll introduce you to the group.  :) --EpochFail (talkcontribs) 23:39, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

A.T Still University Edits

I'm currently working on how to correctly edit the content on the A.T. Still University page to not have the page be flagged as an advertisement. I would greatly appreciate any help regarding this issue, specifically what content we need to delete in order to remove the flag. I have tried multiple times to edit the content and remove content that I feel is written as an advertisement and it shortly after is deleted or changed back to the original content.

As an advertising agency on behalf of ATSU we want the page to contain only true facts regarding the University and it's entities. Wikipedia and ourselves both want the same result, I would just appreciate your help in getting to that point. Thank you in advance. Co-op Pilot Results & Mentoring

Hey there! The Co-op has been on a hiatus for a bit, but we are planning on opening up shop again soon. When you're able, please read over and respond to this update on our talk page. We have favorable results from our final report regarding the pilot, and we are interested in seeing who is available to mentor when we reopen our space and begin to send out invites again. Wikipedia Entry for Mulgrave School

Soni, my name is Karem Planas and I work for a non-profit independent high school in West Vancover BC (Mulgrave School). My predecessor created a Wikipedia entry for our school that was deemed to be promotional and advertising. Most of the schools around us have Wikepdia entries (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collingwood_School and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crofton_House_School). We would like to have the opportunity to edit the article in a way that meets Wikipedia guidelines. Should we dispute the delete or create a new page? If dispute is suggested, should I reach out to the last editor? Thanks Soni! Mulgravecomms (talk) 19:26, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

First, I see that your username is "Mulgravecomms" which appears to be an account for Mulgrave school than for your own personal uses. Per Wikipedia:Username_policy all accounts are supposed to be personal only, therefore I suggest that you either get the account name changed or make another account for yourself only and use that account for editing Wikipedia.
Now to answer your question, for any article to be created, Wikipedia requires that all articles here be notable. In this case, almost all schools are considered notable so that isnt an issue. But the content in those articles also needs to be neutral and encyclopediac. While I cannot see the article that was deleted, I think this is the case here. Can you link the article to me so I could see what the discussion is?
As for what you should be doing, I suggest that you dispute the delete but also make sure to remove anything that might be considered promotional. This means that anything that is not a fact needs to be removed or sourced. For example, statements such as "The school was established in 1980" will be a fact, but "The school has a high quality of top-notch education" is not a fact. Any non facts need to be cited by reliable secondary sources. I personally recommend erring on the side of caution though and first removing anything non neutral/non factual.
Also, a common error that new editors usually make is to directly copy-paste information from elsewhere. Please note that this is considered a copyright violation and also results in immediate deletion of pages. A way around it is to simply write everything in your own words and ensure not even a single sentence in the article is identical to any other external locations.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to ask me any further information.
Regards,
Soni (talk) 05:11, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Hello

Where can I not find you? --SharadbobTalkC 07:49, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:NNG (company), a page you created, has not been edited in 6 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

Thank you for your attention. HasteurBot (talk) 01:33, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Hey Soni - thanks for inviting me to Teahouse

Since you said you were here to help, I have a question for you. I edit mostly articles on surf music, and an anonymous user (75.82.55.26) has been using a cell phone to make vandalistic edits to the page on little-known surf guitarist Laramie Dean. Each time I add a reference, they remove the material again. I'm not sure how to remedy this, as I don't want the page removed altogether. Some advice is appreciated! Thank you! Help decide the future of Wikimania

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk), from Community Resources 21:32, 13 January 2016 (UTC)

Last December, I invited you to share your views on the value of Wikimedia conferences and the planning process of Wikimania. We have completed analysis of these results and have prepared this report summarizing your feedback and important changes for Wikimania starting in 2018 as an experiment. Feedback and comments are welcome at the discussion page. Thank you so much for your participation. I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources, 22:47, 8 February 2016 (UTC)

Adopt-a-user

Hello! I saw you were looking for adoptees, I'm fairly new to editing on Wikipedia, although I have been using Wikipedia for many years. I do have some experience in editing, for I used to run several Wikia pages but I'm not sure how similar that is to Wikipedia. I would like to become a part of the community to help it run more smoothly and I would really appreciate it if you could help me out with learning more about editing pages and become a mentor of sorts. Thank you!

What do I need to do to reference my article correctly ?

Dear Soni,

My draft, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:June_Oscar, was rejected because, "Most of this article is unreferenced. More reliable third-party sources need to be added to the article for verification".

I find this feedback confusing, as I have included 18 references. Surely this is enough to verify the information.

Im aware that 'Community reconstruction' and 'Fighting Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)' don't include many references, and this is because most of the info in these sections is from the same source - reference# 7.

I would really appreciate if you could show me what I need to do to reference my article correctly.

Thanks,

Manny Economou (talk) 06:36, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

@Manny Economou:, I do not see many reference problems with your article. I am checking with the original reviewer to see why they rejected. You should have gotten a ping for the same. Cheers, Soni

Why has my article disappeared from Google ?

Hi Soni,

Ive noticed that my new wiki article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_Oscar, disappeared from Google search results.

Please tell me if you know how to get it back.

Thanks,

Manny Economou (talk) 07:01, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

  • Manny Economou , Google Search results depend on how the GOogle algorithm works, not based on Wikipedia. But based on personal experience, I suggest you to give it a few days. Usually articles pop up on Google results by then.

Hi there,

I'm a new user to Wikipedia and I have uploaded multiple photos of myself to a new Wikipedia page I am creating for myself and my photos keep getting deleted. Additionally, one of the editors - Gestrid has just made the recommendation that I be banned from Wiki for multiple common use violations. The problem is these are not violations. They're my photos and they are being deleted so rapidly that I can't do anything about it. Can you please help me unravel this? Many thanks in advance. Baxter91 (talk) 00:00, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

Adopt-a-user - please check your details

Hello, I have been doing a cleanup of the ‘Adopter’ information page for the Adopt-a-user Project, located here. During my cleanup, I've removed several long-inactive and retired users, leaving just the most recently active ones, whether they're currently available (14 users) or not currently available (24 users).

In order to provide potential adoptees with an easy location to find people, the Adopter's page needs to be up-to-date with the latest availability information. Thus:

  • If you are no longer interested in being an adopter, even in the future, please remove yourself from the list, and delete any {{adopting}} templates from your user pages.
  • If you are still interested, but not currently available, please check the list to see if your details needs to be updated - especially with regards availability. (A dummy edit would show me you’ve checked and are OK with what’s currently there.)
  • Feel free to add a line at the bottom of your entry to show how many adoptees you’ve previously helped. I’m sure that would be of interest to newcomers, especially when you do return.
  • I have also cleaned out nearly 100 inactive editors still flagged as seeking adoption. That leaves just 18 people currently interested in being adopted.

You are receiving this message because you are listed as an adopter here, but have made relatively few edits over the last year or so.

Finally, as an editor with previous experience of adoption (unlike myself!), you might wish to respond to the (admittedly long) comments I've made here about how I think the project could be improved and got working again. I've also 'been bold' and tweaked the project pages a wee bit. Regards from the UK, Nick Moyes (talk) 00:51, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
