Recent changes
- The Section-level Image Suggestions feature has been deployed on seven Wikipedias (Portuguese, Russian, Indonesian, Catalan, Hungarian, Finnish and Norwegian Bokmål). The feature recommends images for articles on contributors' watchlists that are a good match for individual sections of those articles.
- Global abuse filters have been enabled on all Wikimedia projects, except English and Japanese Wikipedias (who opted out). This change was made following a global request for comments. [3]
- Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool for administrators to help fight spam. It provides a clearer interface for blocking plain domains (and their subdomains), is more easily searchable, and is faster for the software to process for each edit on the wiki. It does not support regex (for complex cases), nor URL path-matching, nor the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist, but otherwise it replaces most of the functionalities of the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. There is a Python script to help migrate all simple domains into this tool, and more feature details, within the tool's documentation. It is available at all wikis except for Meta-wiki, Commons, and Wikidata. [4]
- The WikiEditor extension was updated. It includes some of the most frequently used features of wikitext editing. In the past, many of its messages could only be translated by administrators, but now all regular translators on translatewiki can translate them. Please check the state of WikiEditor localization into your language, and if the "Completion" for your language shows anything less than 100%, please complete the translation. See a more detailed explanation.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 July. It will be on all wikis from 13 July (calendar).
- The default protocol of Special:LinkSearch and API counterparts has changed from http to both http and https. [5]
- Special:LinkSearch and its API counterparts will now search for all of the URL provided in the query. It used to be only the first 60 characters. This feature was requested fifteen years ago. [6]
Future changes
- There is an experiment with a ChatGPT plugin. This is to show users where the information is coming from when they read information from Wikipedia. It has been tested by Wikimedia Foundation staff and other Wikimedians. Soon all ChatGPT plugin users can use the Wikipedia plugin. This is the same plugin which was mentioned in Tech News 2023/20. [7]
- There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed Third-party resources policy. The proposal will impact the use of third-party resources in gadgets and userscripts. Based on the ideas received so far, policy includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, some best practices and exemption requirements such as code transparency and inspectability. Your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on on the policy talk page.

Request on 16:34:51, 13 July 2023 for assistance on AfC submission by Icsteveoh
I would like to have a page similar to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_Geospatial_Center or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_Department_of_Transportation. I don't understand why this agency isn't applicable. What steps can I take to have a better chance?
Icsteveoh (talk) 16:34, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Icsteveoh the pages you mention also have similar flaws. I can't speak for the other editors who have worked on them, but I've tagged them as needing third party sources. As a tertiary source, wikipedia is built on secondary sources; no document written or published by an agency can be a secondary source of information about that agency. Look for press coverage, review articles, etc. Stuartyeates (talk) 20:09, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, I've gone and done that. Icsteveoh (talk) 20:34, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
- What you need to be looking for is significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Passing mentions are not significant. News articles based on press releases (or built around quotes from employees) are not independent. You're heading in the right direction though. Stuartyeates (talk) 00:25, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 July. It will be on all wikis from 20 July (calendar).
- MediaWiki system messages will now look for available local fallbacks, instead of always using the default fallback defined by software. This means wikis no longer need to override each language on the fallback chain separately. For example, English Wikipedia doesn't have to create
en-ca
anden-gb
subpages with a transclusion of the base pages anymore. This makes it easier to maintain local overrides. [8] - The
action=growthsetmentorstatus
API will be deprecated with the new MediaWiki version. Bots or scripts calling that API should use theaction=growthmanagementorlist
API now. [9]

Growth team newsletter #27
Welcome to the twenty-seventh newsletter from the Growth team! Help with translations
Annual plan for Growth
We shared our annual plan, for the period July 2023 - June 2024.
Our first project of the year will be Community configuration 2.0, which helps editors with extended rights transparently and easily configure important on-wiki functionality.
After we finish work on Community configuration 2.0, we will hope to fit in one of the following projects:
- Article creation: This project aims to provide new editors with better guidance and guardrails in the article creation process, with the intention of lightening the load of new page reviewers.
- Non-editing participation: This project aims to create low-risk ways for readers to participate in Wikipedia with the intention of funneling more readers into contributing to the Wikimedia movement.
Please let us know what you think about these projects on the related talk page, or Growth's annual plan talk page.
Suggested edits
We released a new Section-level “add an image” structured task to Growth pilot wikis (Arabic, Bengali, Czech, and Spanish). This task was part of the Structured Data Across Wikipedia project. We are monitoring the edits made, and we look for community feedback as well.
Suggested Edits are now receiving topic predictions via the new Language-Agnostic Topic Classification. This change affects non-English Wikipedia wikis. It will ensure newcomers receive a greater diversity of task recommendations. Before, as this feature was a test, English Wikipedia was used to select topics. The change is gradual as lists of topics are refreshed when they become empty. The Research team will evaluate the impact in a few months. [15]
Starting on August 1, a new set of Wikipedias will get "Add a link": Georgian Wikipedia, Kara-Kalpak Wikipedia, Kabyle Wikipedia, Kabardian Wikipedia, Kabiyè Wikipedia, Kikuyu Wikipedia, Kazakh Wikipedia, Khmer Wikipedia, Kannada Wikipedia, Kashmiri Wikipedia, Colognian Wikipedia, Kurdish Wikipedia, Cornish Wikipedia, Cornish Wikipedia.
Mentorship
The Growth team provides dedicated features to establish a mentorship program for newcomers. Every newcomer gets a volunteer mentor who provides encouragement and answers questions. Communities can set up or join this mentorship system by visiting Special:ManageMentors. This mentorship system is configurable by the community at Special:EditGrowthConfig.
More communities have implemented mentorship. A Wikimedia Foundation data scientist will be looking at the impact of Mentorship. We will look at the impact on Spanish and English Wikipedia. [16]
The Growth team will also host a Mentoring new editors on Wikipedia session at Wikimania 2023 in Singapore. Workshop attendees will help brainstorm improvements to Growth’s mentorship features.
Positive reinforcement
We will share more complete experiment analysis for all the three parts of the Positive reinforcement project soon. At the moment, the new Impact module, Leveling up, and Personalized praise are still being A/B tested on the Growth team's pilot wikis.
In the meantime, initial leading indicators for the Personalized praise project have been published. Although this is still a relatively small sample, results seem healthy. They show that Mentors are indeed receiving notifications and clicking through to view their praise-worthy mentees.
Growth contributes to IP Editing migration
The Growth team is currently focusing on IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation. It is a project that touches many different Wikimedia Foundation teams. The Growth team will focus on temporary accounts through two main points:
- the user experience of a logged-out user, that switches to a temporary account,
- change Growth-owned extensions and features, so that they work as expected with temporary accounts. [17]
Community Configuration 2.0
We are still in the early planning stage of the Community Configuration 2.0 project:
- We are gathering internal Wikimedia Foundation teams' needs, so as community feedback. [18]
- We have started to investigate design improvements. [19]
- We are also reviewing similar tools that are part of other products. [20]

- ORES, the revision evaluation service, is now using a new open-source infrastructure on all wikis except for English Wikipedia and Wikidata. These two will follow this week. If you notice any unusual results from the Recent Changes filters that are related to ORES (for example, "Contribution quality predictions" and "User intent predictions"), please report them. [47]
- When you are logged in on one Wikimedia wiki and visit a different Wikimedia wiki, the system tries to log you in there automatically. This has been unreliable for a long time. You can now visit the login page to make the system try extra hard. If you feel that made logging in better or worse than it used to be, your feedback is appreciated. [48]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 September. It will be on all wikis from 14 September (calendar).
- The Technical Decision-Making Forum Retrospective team invites anyone involved in the technical field of Wikimedia projects to signup to and join one of their listening sessions on 13 September. Another date will be scheduled later. The goal is to improve the technical decision-making processes.
- As part of the changes for the Better diff handling of paragraph splits wishlist proposal, the inline switch widget in diff pages is being rolled out this week to all wikis. The inline switch will allow viewers to toggle between a unified inline or two-column diff wikitext format. [49]
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 20 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [50]
- The Enterprise API is launching a new feature called "breaking news". Currently in BETA, this attempts to identify likely "newsworthy" topics as they are currently being written about in any Wikipedia. Your help is requested to improve the accuracy of its detection model, especially on smaller language editions, by recommending templates or identifiable editing patterns. See more information at the documentation page on MediaWiki or the FAQ on Meta.

New pages patrol newsletter
Hello Stuartyeates,
Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!
October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.
PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.
Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.
Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

I'd like to know more specifically what your objections are and how to alleviate them. I have also found another source from a peer reviewed publication that I could add and work in to the article to further support notability.

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 October. It will be on all wikis from 12 October (calendar).
- Starting on Wednesday, a new set of Wikipedias will get "Add a link" (Swahili Wikipedia, Walloon Wikipedia, Waray Wikipedia, Wolof Wikipedia, Kalmyk Wikipedia, Xhosa Wikipedia, Mingrelian Wikipedia, Yiddish Wikipedia, Yoruba Wikipedia, Zhuang Wikipedia, Zeelandic Wikipedia, Min Nan Wikipedia, Zulu Wikipedia). This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure how this feature works locally. [61]
- At some wikis, newcomers are suggested images from Commons to add to articles without any images. Starting on Tuesday, newcomers at these wikis will be able to add images to unillustrated article sections. The specific wikis are listed under "Images recommendations" at the Growth team deployment table. You can learn more about this feature. [62]
- In the mobile web skin (Minerva) the CSS ID
#page-actions
will be replaced with#p-views
. This change is to make it consistent with other skins and to improve support for gadgets and extensions in the mobile skin. A few gadgets may need to be updated; there are details and search-links in the task.

Growth team newsletter #28
Welcome to the twenty-eighth newsletter from the Growth team! Help with translations
Community configuration 2.0
- Community Configuration 2.0 is a feature that will enable Wikimedia communities to easily customize and configure features to meet their unique needs. This approach provides non-technical moderators with more independence and control over enabling/disabling and customizing features for their communities.
- Technical approach and associated tasks are detailed in this Epic task on Phabricator.
- Initial designs are drafted for two different approaches (see images). We will soon demo interactive prototypes to interested admins, stewards, and experienced editors (T346109). Please let us know if you have feedback on the design approach, or want to participate in prototype testing.
IP Masking
- The Growth team has been working on several updates to ensure Growth maintained features will be compatible with future IP Masking changes. This work has included code changes to: Recent Changes (T343322), Echo notifications (T333531), the Thanks extension (T345679) and Mentorship (T341390).
- Before December, the Growth team will initiate community discussions with the goal of migrating communities from Flow to DiscussionTools. This move aims to minimize the necessity for additional engineering work to make Flow compatible with IP Masking. (T346108)
Mentorship
- We assembled some resources for mentors at Mediawiki wiki. This resource page is translatable and will be linked from the mentor dashboard.
- We are working to resolve a bug related to mentors properly returning after being marked as "Away". (T347024)
- Half of newcomers at English Wikipedia get a mentor assigned to them. To ensure every newcomer receives mentorship, we need additional volunteer mentors at English Wikipedia to achieve a 100% coverage rate. We also encourage experienced users from other wikis to help newcomers at their own community.
Scaling Growth features
- We continue the deployment of the structured task "add a link" to all Wikipedias. We plan to scale the task to all Wikipedias that have link suggestions available by the end of 2023.
- We plan to scale the new Impact Module to all Wikipedias soon, but first we are investigating a bug with the job that refreshes the Impact Module data. (T344428)
- At some wikis, newcomers have access to the "add an image" structured task. This task suggests images that may be relevant to add to unillustrated articles. Newcomers at these wikis can now add images to unillustrated articles sections. (T345940) The wikis that have this task are listed under "Images recommendations" at the Growth team deployment table.
Other news
- We disabled the “add an image” task temporarily (T345188) because there was a failure in the image suggestions pipeline (T345141). This is now fixed.
- You can read a report about the Growth team’s representation at Wikimania in Singapore here. Growth team members presented two sessions at Wikimania Singapore.
- After a 2.5 years-long collaboration with Bangala Wikipedia, we have decided to start a collaboration with another wiki. Swahili Wikipedia is now a pilot wiki for Growth experiments.

- The Unified login system's edge login should now be fixed for some browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera). This means that if you visit a new sister project wiki, you should be logged in automatically without the need to click "Log in" or reload the page. Feedback on whether it's working for you is welcome. [63]
- Edit notices are now available within the MobileFrontend/Minerva skin. This feature was inspired by the gadget on English Wikipedia. See more details in T316178.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 October. It will be on all wikis from 19 October (calendar).
Future changes
- In 3 weeks, in the Vector 2022 skin, code related to
addPortletLink
and#p-namespaces
that was deprecated one year ago will be removed. If you notice tools that should appear next to the "Discussion" tab are then missing, please tell the gadget's maintainers to see instructions in the Phabricator task.

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 31 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 November. It will be on all wikis from 2 November (calendar).
- Listings on category pages are sorted on each wiki for that language using a library. For a brief period on 2 November, changes to categories will not be sorted correctly for many languages. This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the library. They will then use a script to fix the existing categories. This will take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [65][66]
- Starting November 1, the impact module (Special:Impact) will be upgraded by the Growth team. The new impact module shows newcomers more data regarding their impact on the wiki. It was tested by a few wikis during the last few months. [67]
Future changes
- There is a proposed plan for re-enabling the Graph Extension. You can help by reviewing this proposal and sharing what you think about it.
- The WMF is working on making it possible for administrators to edit MediaWiki configuration directly. This is similar to previous work on Special:EditGrowthConfig. A technical RfC is running until November 08, where you can provide feedback.

November Articles for creation backlog drive
Hello Stuartyeates:
WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.
You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.
Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
Hello, I saw that you've marked Hun clan as reviewed. The original article is available at Hun. It's possible that the creator might be a LTA trying to insert a Gurjar POV into various articles about kings and clans. I've taken the step to file an SPI for this. It's important to note that the sources provided in this article only make claims. – DreamRimmer (talk) 03:19, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Request on 03:07:42, 2 November 2023 for assistance on AfC submission by Cd634011
Hello! Any help regarding this article is much appreciated. Both reviewers do not seem to be seeing this as a scholarly book, which has different requirements for establishing notability compared to other types of books.
I have made edits to include over a dozen additional secondary references from sources that are independent of the book's author. These include references to textbooks, other academic books, and papers from other fields (e.g., neuroscience, education, economics) that use work featured in the book.
This is a highly specialized academic book, so I used those guidelines for notability per the "Academic and technical books" section of this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(books). The book was published in Routledge's Scientific Psychology series, which is a prestigious series that includes books by well-known and respected figures in mathematical psychology, such as Duncan Luce and Louis Narens. Books in this series normally undergo multiple levels of peer review. The audience for this book is relatively narrow, as mathematical psychology is not a large field. As a tenured professor in Experimental Psychology, I believe it to be an important contribution and have used Chapters from the book in my graduate seminar in Cognitive Psychology.
Please also note that while many of the original references are connected to the book's author, they are all from peer-reviewed journals and thus have undergone review by other experts in the field. These references are not independent of the subject, but they are in-depth and reliable, and they are important to demonstrating how the work in the book has been scientifically validated.
Cd634011 (talk) 03:07, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
- Notability is always about secondary sources on the topic. To be honest, I'm not seeing the secondary sources here. Stuartyeates (talk) 03:27, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

A bit of a gap since the last postcard, but what a great time we've had with the Wikipedian at Large project in the interim • The highlight has been having Marshall and Lyn join me on the West Coast for a few days, visiting Fox Glacier and Whataroa • We now have good photo collections for the newly-created Waitangiroto Nature Reserve, and a a much improved article with galler • The Whataroa article has been improved with local history and links to the White Herons • We also have much better coverage of Fox Glacier, including new Ngāi Tahu viewing place Te Kopikopiko o te Waka, and photos of Te Weheka Walkway/Cycleway and the South Side Walkway/Cycleway • Could I get you all to check back through your contributions and add anything extra you've done to the [Progress page as we wrap up • Also—I'm hosting a catch-up meeting on Sunday November 12, 2:30 pm, online at my Whereby chat room. This is a chance to go over anything you'd still like to see improved, talk about how the project went and possibilities for future ones, and announce winners of prizes for most or best contributions. Drop me a line at mikerove.wiki if you can make it (or can't but have ideas about the project) • Thank you all for your contributions, however small, and chat soon. — Giantflightlessbirds |

Draft:List of 250 most-backward districts (2006)
What do you think is the copyvio at Draft:List of 250 most-backward districts (2006)? I agree the list is copied from the source but as it's alphabetically listed by state and district, that doesn't seem to be creative (and hence not a copyvio - Wikipedia:Copyright in lists#Copyrightability of other factors). Nor does the choice of districts appear to be creative but is a factual list based on calculation (see Wikipedia:Copyright in lists#Copyrightability of content).
I can see a straightforward decline of the draft for notability but not as a copyvio. Nthep (talk) 13:37, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Nthep. I differ on whether the choice of districts is creative (politics is always creative), but you're right it may not be a copyvio. You're welcome to add a note that it may not be a copyvio and give another reason instead. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:25, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

Dear Stuart,
Thank you for your interest for this physics topic. You write using a template
>This article is written like a personal reflection, personal essay, or argumentative essay that states a Wikipedia editor's personal feelings or presents an original argument about a topic. (October 2023)
- Could you please explain this remark? The topic of car speed and energy usage is part of European high school basic physics, and in the Netherlands played a role in policy discussions of reducing the maximum allowed car speed to lower CO2 greenhouse gas production. (The day time max speed was reduced from 120 km/h to 100 km/h.) This is simply hardcore 18th-19th century very classical physics about kinetic energy and friction from physics books, so no, no, there are no personal feelings or original arguments here. Would that i had discovered this...
Please your reaction, thank you, Hansmuller (talk) 08:02, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
- User:Hansmuller: The note I posted was unrelated to the content of the article. The note that I posted related to the structure and formatting of the article. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and all articles are unified by consistent style and formatting. Particularly the first part of this article needs to be recast. There are a whole list of rules at WP:MOS, but usually it's easier to find a similar / related article and see how it's structured. Stuartyeates (talk) 19:31, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Dear Stuart, thank you for your reply and suggestion. You suggest Particularly the first part of this article needs to be recast. What can i do? A similar article is Drag_(physics). Perhaps you don't want a summary and a simple calculation at the beginning? Formatting? Can you be more specific? The enormous - quadratic - energy consumption at higher speeds is essential knowledge for car drivers, right?
- Please your more specific suggestions, thank you, Hansmuller (talk) 09:41, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- Four new wikis have been created:
Problems
- Last week, users who previously visited Meta-Wiki or Wikimedia Commons and then became logged out on those wikis could not log in again. The problem is now resolved. [76]
- Last week, some pop-up dialogs and menus were shown with the wrong font size. The problem is now resolved. [77]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 November. It will be on all wikis from 16 November (calendar).
Future changes
- Reference Previews are coming to many wikis as a default feature. They are popups for references, similar to the PagePreviews feature. You can opt out of seeing them. If you are using the gadgets Reference Tooltips or Navigation Popups, you won’t see Reference Previews. Deployment is planned for November 22, 2023.
- Canary (also known as heartbeat) events will be produced into Wikimedia event streams from December 11. Streams users are advised to filter out these events, by discarding all events where
meta.domain == "canary"
. Updates to Pywikibot or wikimedia-streams will discard these events by default. [78]

Request on 12:23:47, 15 September 2023 for assistance on AfC submission by Stef joosten
- Stef joosten (talk · contribs)
Hi Stuart,
Thank you for taking the trouble to review my draft.
I have a clarification question about your comment: "Most of the refs don't appear to mention the subject."
Do you mean the references to scientific literature? I don't understand this comment yet, because the subject "Ampersand" is mentioned in three references. These three are the seminal articles on this topic and are peer-reviewed academic work. The hyperlinks in my draft refer to other Wikipedia contributions, so readers can find further explanations for such terms as they see fit. In this way, I did my best to make everything traceable and verifiable.
So, I suspect I don't fully understand your comment yet. Could you please elaborate a bit, so I can adapt the draft in the right direction?
Would you like me to include a language definition? Or examples? I'd be happy to, even though the very first hyperlink in the draft points to https://ampersandtarski.github.io/, which is the authoritative documentation of Ampersand.
I'd really appreciate some more clarification on your comment.
Stef joosten (talk) 12:23, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
- User:Stef joosten Articles need to be based on secondary sources with in depth coverage of the topic. Sources from the authors of the programming language aren't independent. Sources which don't mention the programming language don't have in depth coverage. Stuartyeates (talk) 09:28, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
- Dear Stuart,
- I have improved the article on the citations. However, we still have a problem: Ampersand is a small topic in computer science. Therefore, there are no in-depth sources in which I don't participate.
- I dare dispute, however, your conclusion that the in-depth secondary sources are not independent. The secondary sources that are scientific papers have been reviewed by independent academics in scientific conferences and journals. Most notably the international conference on Relation Algebraic Methods in Computer Science (RAMiCS), which boasts a thorough and independent review process. Surely, those sources are not questionable or unreliable. This is precisely why Wikipedia does not forbid self referencing; it leaves room to scrutinize self-referencing critically.
- The problem is: Your refusal means that well-established scientific results in small niche-areas are unpublishable on Wikepedia, even when based on solid and acknowledged research results.
- So please reconsider the paper with the improvements I have made. If you still find it wanting, I have to rest my case with deep regrets on my side.
- Best regards,
- Stef Joosten Stef joosten (talk) 08:00, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Draft about Zula Globe
Hello, can you help me to edit my draft https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Zula_Global? Thank you for suggesting me to use independent sources. For this reason, in addition to the official sites of the game, I also wanted to report some newspaper articles and a famous player of the game. Unfortunately, however, apart from this information there is nothing else online, since it is just a game and not, for example, historical facts. Could you help me by specifying better what you mean by "indipendent sources" about my case? Thank you for helping me! Rassolino (talk) 07:44, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- Independent sources are a key requirement for having a wikipedia article. I had a look in google and there didn't see any. If none can be found, you're not going to be able to get an article accepted. Stuartyeates (talk) 09:38, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for reviewing my submission List of California political scandals. As to your points:
TOO MUCH BOILERPLATE: The boilerplate here exactly matches the boilerplate on the article List of Alabama political scandals which has already been accepted by Wikipedia for publication. But I agree with you. Each of the paragraphs is an answer to previous editors who could not seem to find a definition of ‘scandal’.
OLDER CITATIONS: Absolutely. I have citations that go back to 1857. I did not use them because some editors have argued this article is too long. They think it would not fit on a modern cell phone! I therefore censured myself, but could easily add more citations, if it will be accepted.
PUBISHING WITHOUT REVIEW: Perhaps I should be talking to the editor who approved List of Alabama political scandals. He mentioned there is a way for published authors to publish again using create articles yourself, but I’ll be damned if I can figure out how. So I submitted this at Articles for creation which led to Article Wizard which led to you. What am I missing? Johnsagent (talk) 03:07, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Growth team newsletter #29
Welcome to the twenty-ninth newsletter from the Growth team! Help with translations
Community Conversations
The Growth team will host its first community conversation Monday, 4 December (19:00 - 20:30 UTC). The topic for this meeting will be Mentorship.
This first meeting language will be English, but we plan to host conversations in other languages, and about other topics. Please visit the conversation page on-wiki for the details on how to join. You can also watch the page, or suggest ideas for upcoming conversations there.
Impact Module
At the beginning of November 2023, the Growth team deployed the New Impact Module to all Wikipedias. We recently released a follow up improvement to how edit data was displayed based on editor feedback. [88]
Add a Link
We released “add a link” to 35 more Wikipedias. [89] [90]
We have a few Wikipedias remaining:
- German and English Wikipedia will be contacted at the beginning of January 2024.
- There are a few small wikis that will not receive the task until they have enough articles for the algorithm to work properly.
Community Configuration
- We shared Community Configuration 2.0 plans with technical stakeholders. [91] 🖂
- Initial Community Configuration design ideas have been shared and discussed with community members.
- A basic Community Configuration 2.0 demo is released on ToolForge.
- Developers can find some initial proof of concept code shared on gitlab.
Mentorship
When a mentor marked themselves as "Away", they were not getting their name assigned to new accounts when they returned. This has been fixed. [92]
We improved the message received by newcomers when their mentor quits, to reduce confusion. [93]
We worked on ensuring that all mentees are assigned to an active mentor. This required reassigning mentees with no mentors to a new mentor. We paused this as the clean-up script confused some editors. We will resume it when the identified blockers are resolved. [94]
It is now possible to create an Abuse Filter to prevent one user from signing up as a mentor. [95]

Request for guidance
@Stuartyeates A draft (Draft:Odisha Urdu Academy) submitted for review was declined with reasons. Now that I've removed a lot of content against wiki rules, is it worth re-submitting now? I will resubmit if you guide me; otherwise, I will try to improve. Khaatir (talk) 07:16, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- It's hard to say. There's an excellent source at https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bhubaneswar/urdu-academy-put-on-the-backburner/articleshow/54707661.cms . I suspect that there may be more sources in Urdu (this being an Urdu Academy after all). If you can find one or two more articles like that in Urdu, the article will qualify for inclusion. Important points are (a) published somewhere reputable and (b) those involved with the Academy are not involved in publishing the article. Stuartyeates (talk) 07:21, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Stuartyeates I have made corrections to the best of my ability, added reliable references, and omitted unnecessary detailed material that is not covered by secondary sources. I have resubmitted for review. Khaatir (talk) 03:35, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
Draft:Sport Inside
Hello. Could you take another look at Draft:Sport Inside? I added the Expand German template at the top. The German version of the page, which has existed since 2010, has the sources you requested, but I'm not able to translate them. Thanks. - Richie2023 (talk) 17:37, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
- Their own website is not independent and IMDb is a website that anyone can edit. These are not suitable. Surely there are some German-language sources? Stuartyeates (talk) 18:18, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
Draft:Exchange_Job_Definition_Format
Thank you for the suggestion to "steal" some references from https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchange_Job_Definition_Format (which is a published article). The principal German author of that page has added several of his sources to our English page, and says we have more sources than he does.
Question: We believe we had addressed all the "reliable sources" & "primary source" complaints, with updates and several secondary sources added, yet the article was declined once again. Do you have any thoughts on how best to clear complaints and get this article published?
Thanks again, - Jim Jmekis (talk) 21:14, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Draft:International Comission for the History and Theory of Historiography
Dear Stuartyeates,
You have recently reviewed the proposed article on the International Commission for the History and Theory of Historiography (ICHTH), Draft:International Commission for the History and Theory of Historiography. I am grateful for your effort and interest. To my regret, however, you rejected the submission, leaving the following reasons for rejecting the article in my talk page: 'Wikipedia articles require reliable independent secondary sources with in depth coverage of the subjects. I'm not seeing significant independent secondary sources on this org. A quick scan in google scholar isn't helpful either. If decent sources are added to the article, feel free to ping my talk page once you've resubmitted the article for review'.
I must clarify from the outset that ICHTH is not an association that produces scientific historical information itself. Therefore, a scan of Google Scholar will necessarily disappoint. In the Constitution of ICHTH (https://www.ichth.net/constitution) it is stipulated that ICHTH “promotes the study of theory of history, history of historiography, philosophy of history, historical methodology, and historical culture. It encourages debates and exchanges among different approaches to the above subjects of study.” In short, it is a global platform where philosophers of history and historiographers meet, in essence to promote scientific historical knowledge worldwide - a purpose, indeed, that is at the heart of the Wikipedia project itself.
Let me now show you that ICHTH is worth a Wikipedia entry from both a quantitative and qualitative angle.
I have just googled 'International Commission for the History and Theory of Historiography' and found 22,100 results, including, for instance
- Wikipedia's own article on Historiography
- The web page of the International Committee of Historical Sciences: https://www.cish.org/index.php/en/members/international-organisations/
- This page from the Huizinga Instituut. Netherlands Research School for Cultural History: https://www.huizingainstituut.nl/working-group/theory-of-history/
- A newsletter from the Wesleyan University, Conn., USA: https://newsletter.blogs.wesleyan.edu/2018/03/30/kleinberg-lectures-in-france-elected-to-historiography-commission/
- The page of the Centre for Historical Culture, University of Rotterdam, The Netherlands: https://www.eur.nl/en/eshcc/research/centre-historical-culture/general-information
- A book chapter published by Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom, quoted in the proposed article: https://books.google.com.br/books?hl=pt-BR&lr=lang_en%7Clang_pl&id=lcAAEAAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PA165&dq=%22ichth%22+%2B+historiography&ots=ySvMTymuAC&sig=EmK35ugc8D5zQ0r91gsf1Yy-GL4&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=%22ichth%22%20%2B%20historiography&f=false
I think the list already suggests that the ICHTH is not as invisible on the web as the review might have assumed.
However, there are other ways than internet frequencies to assess the relevance of an academic organisation like the ICHTH. Longevity, global representativeness, the prominence of its members within their fields of study should all somehow be included in the assessment. The ICHTH is a 43-year-old academic association. It is an official member of the International Committee of Historical Sciences (https://www.cish.org/index.php/fr/membres/information/?pdb=508), the world’s umbrella organization for historical sciences, but it functions completely autonomously just as the 70 or so other associations affiliated to the ICHS do. ICHTH is made up of leading university professors and researchers from all over the world, many of whom are considered important enough to have their own Wikipedia pages. For example, the Board of the ICHTH (https://www.ichth.net/board) consists of 13 members coming from 12 countries ranging from Canada over Nigeria to China and Australia. And its list of honorary members includes names such as Natalie Zemon Davis, Hayden White, Romila Thapar, Georg Iggers, Peter Burke, Joan Wallach Scott, Jürgen Kocka and Frank Ankersmit - a quick glance at their Wikipedia entries will confirm how important they are/were not only for the theory or history of historiography, but for historical studies in general.
Judging relevance will be unfair if we limit ourselves to the mechanical application of criteria designed to prevent spurious self-promotion or marketing strategies by profit-driven people and companies. And if we think in terms of longevity, representativeness or prominence of members, we will easily find Wikipedia articles on organisations of all kinds that would rank below the ICHTH.
So, in light of the above, I would kindly urge you to reconsider the decision to reject the article. Thank you very much for your attention. Aoaassis (talk) 09:12, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
- Answered at Draft:International Comission for the History and Theory of Historiography. Stuartyeates (talk) 17:35, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, where to find these sources? That is the problem. ~~ ~~
If sources are the problem, I had just listed some good ones above, attesting that the organisation exists and is recognised in its field. To the attentive and not ill-disposed eye, that should have sufficed. Such a pity that it has not. Aoaassis (talk) 07:06, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
- Close reading will reveal I said 'in depth coverage of the subject.' I don't see that n any of these sources. You're welcome to resubmit to get another editors opinion. Stuartyeates (talk) 08:14, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
Request on 10:32:55, 8 December 2023 for assistance on AfC submission by Ruslan Sharipov
In comments to my draft article you wrote "We need independent sources". Please let me know, (1) you need independent sources for existing content or (2) you need extra content with independent sources. If (1) is the case and if you need independent sources for the section "Institutes and Departments", would it be OK to remove this section or maybe I could find independent sources for some items in the list and keep these items removing others and thus making the list incomplete? Please which option is better?
Ruslan Sharipov (talk) 10:32, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Ruslan Sharipov. Right now the draft has a wall of sources, almost all sourced to uust.ru. Wikipedia, as a tertiary source is not built on what people say about themselves (primary sources), but what independent third parties say about them (secondary sources). You need to be looking for in-depth coverage, not database / ranking websites or recycled press releases. Look for coverage in region news sources. Coverage of sports teams can also be useful, if independent. You also need to include the Russian name(s) after the English names, so other editors can easily search for sources. It is possible that this newly established institution does not yet have the coverage to meet our criteria, but I don't speak/read Russian, so I'm not sure. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:27, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
- I've remove half the content based on primary sources and approved it based on the other sources. Also tidied up the other two articles. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:44, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of List of Colorado political scandals
Hello Stuartyeates,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged List of Colorado political scandals for deletion, because it's a redirect from an article title to a namespace that's not for articles.
If you don't want List of Colorado political scandals to be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Hi Stuartyeates!
Thank you so much for taking the time to review my article about Liberty Latin America.

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 December. It will be on all wikis from 21 December (calendar). There is no new MediaWiki version next week. [107][108]

- There will be full support for redirects in the Module namespace. The "Move Page" feature will leave an appropriate redirect behind, and such redirects will be appropriately recognized by the software (e.g. hidden from Special:UnconnectedPages). There will also be support for manual redirects. [110]

Resubmission of GRESB article draft
Hey @Stuartyeates, thanks for your comments on the first submission of the GRESB article. To address your feedback, I have added two new secondary sources to the article (see source #5 and #17). Additionally, source #7 and 11 are both secondary sources. As such, I have resubmitted the article and hope to hear your valuable feedback soon. Thanks again for your time and effort. ESGBencher (talk) 14:26, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
- ESGBencher I suggest that opinion pieces, things with associated people in the byline and attributions of data sources are not indepth coverage. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:19, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your continued dialogue on this proposed page, @Stuartyeates. While I know I put a few sources that are opinion pieces to explain some additional context (I'm happy to remove them if that is helpful), the main sources I mentioned above were written by third parties with no association to the organization, so I think they should qualify based on the criteria. Again, thank you for your support as I get more familiar with contributing to wikipedia. ESGBencher (talk) 10:16, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Pages that use the JSON contentmodel will now use tabs instead of spaces for auto-indentation. This will significantly reduce the page size. [114]
- Gadgets and personal user scripts may now use JavaScript syntax introduced in ES6 (also known as "ES2015") and ES7 ("ES2016"). MediaWiki validates the source code to protect other site functionality from syntax errors, and to ensure scripts are valid in all supported browsers. Previously, Gadgets could use the
requiresES6
option. This option is no longer needed and will be removed in the future. [115] - Bot passwords and owner-only OAuth consumers can now be restricted to allow editing only specific pages. [116]
- You can now thank edits made by bots. [117]
- An update on the status of the Community Wishlist Survey for 2024 has been published. Please read and give your feedback.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 January. It will be on all wikis from 18 January (calendar). [118][119]
- Starting on January 17, it will not be possible to login to Wikimedia wikis from some specific old versions of the Chrome browser (versions 51–66, released between 2016 and 2018). Additionally, users of iOS 12, or Safari on Mac OS 10.14, may need to login to each wiki separately. [120]
- The
jquery.cookie
module was deprecated and replaced with themediawiki.cookie
module last year. A script has now been run to replace any remaining uses, and this week the temporary alias will be removed. [121]
Future changes
- Wikimedia Deutschland is working to make reusing references easier. They are looking for people who are interested in participating in individual video calls for user research in January and February.

Draft article rejection - Stochastic survival of the densest
Hello Stuartyeates,
Thanks for reviewing my article. I received the following feedback from you: "The academic paper at the core of this article has been cited only 3 times. This is not what notability looks like."
May I kindly ask you more constructive suggestions rather than only pointing out this? Is there any way I can improve the article, or the simple fact that the paper has only three citations (so far) makes the page I wrote not even worth being considered? Thus, we cannot communicate science unless the topic is "popular"? Any suggestion would be really appreciated.
I would like to underline that the paper was published only one year ago (yet, on a journal with impact factor of 11.1 in 2022), and describes a very specific topic. Also, the issue of clonal expansion has been puzzling researchers for years (as you might have seen from many of the references I cited).
There is a huge gap between society (non-scientists) and science in specialist journals. As a scientist, the effort I was doing in writing this article was trying to bridge the gap with the knowledge I have acquired so far and a non-scientific user.
Many thanks in advance for your feedback! Ceciliafruet (talk) 21:06, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- Ceciliafruet: Wikipedia is a tertiary source, it needs to be based on secondary sources. The universe of knowledge that never makes it to secondary sources cannot be mentioned by tertiary sources such as wikipedia. This concept does not qualify for inclusion in wikipedia; yet. Come back once the paper or concept has significant coverage in secondary sources. Stuartyeates (talk) 21:09, 21 January 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The mobile site history pages now use the same HTML as the desktop history pages. If you hear of any problems relating to mobile history usage please point them to the phabricator task.
- On most wikis, admins can now block users from making specific actions. These actions are: uploading files, creating new pages, moving (renaming) pages, and sending thanks. The goal of this feature is to allow admins to apply blocks that are adequate to the blocked users' activity. Learn more about "action blocks". [130][131]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 February. It will be on all wikis from 8 February (calendar). [132][133]
- Talk pages permalinks that included diacritics and non-Latin script were malfunctioning. This issue is fixed. [134]
Future changes
- 24 Wikipedias with Reference Tooltips as a default gadget are encouraged to remove that default flag. This would make Reference Previews the new default for reference popups, leading to a more consistent experience across wikis. For 46 Wikipedias with less than 4 interface admins, the change is already scheduled for mid-February, unless there are concerns. The older Reference Tooltips gadget will still remain usable and will override this feature, if it is available on your wiki and you have enabled it in your settings. [135][136]

Draft:TETRA_Mobile_network_codes_in_ITU_MCC_region_2xx_(Europe)
Thanks a lot for the review of my draft page @Stuartyeates . Your comment has been: "I'm seeing zero in depth coverage in secondary sources.". I´m not sure what you are referring to. I guess you say that the lists created just are referenced by the regional regulators and their publications and you would require additional sources on top of this? Is my understanding correct? This process would be different to existing handling of e.g. Mobile_network_codes_in_ITU_region_2xx_(Europe), which reflects the same source handling as I applied to my draft. I appreciate your feedback on this in advance! Maedula (talk) 14:10, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The mobile visual editor is now the default editor for users who never edited before, at a small group of wikis. Research shows that users using this editor are slightly more successful publishing the edits they started, and slightly less successful publishing non-reverted edits. Users who defined the wikitext editor as their default on desktop will get the wikitext editor on mobile for their first edit on mobile as well. [151]
- The mw.config value
wgGlobalGroups
now only contains groups that are active in the wiki. Scripts no longer have to check whether the group is active on the wiki via an API request. A code example of the above is:if (/globalgroupname/.test(mw.config.get("wgGlobalGroups")))
. [152]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 February. It will be on all wikis from 29 February (calendar). [153][154]
Future changes
- The right to change edit tags (
changetags
) will be removed from users in Wikimedia sites, keeping it by default for admins and bots only. Your community can ask to retain the old configuration on your wiki before this change happens. Please indicate in this ticket to keep it for your community before the end of March 2024.

Napoleonic looting of art in Spain
I guess the author found out how to bypass AfC. My concern is that he/she may create more such articles.
- The English is also terrible. This is not machine translation from Spanish, it is worse.
- there is already a Napoleonic looting of art
- Am I correct in thinking that there is no consequence for new editors bypassing AfC? Elinruby (talk) 06:15, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
- I've PROD'd Napoleonic looting of art in Spain. Stuartyeates (talk) 06:32, 29 February 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The
Special:Book
page (as well as the associated "Create a book" functionality) provided by the old Collection extension has been removed from all Wikisource wikis, as it was broken. This does not affect the ability to download normal books, which is provided by the Wikisource extension. [155] - Wikitech now uses the next-generation Parsoid wikitext parser by default to generate all pages in the Talk namespace. Report any problems on the Known Issues discussion page. You can use the ParserMigration extension to control the use of Parsoid; see the ParserMigration help documentation for more details.
- Maintenance on etherpad is completed. If you encounter any issues, please indicate in this ticket.
- Gadgets allow interface admins to create custom features with CSS and JavaScript. The
Gadget
andGadget_definition
namespaces andgadgets-definition-edit
user right were reserved for an experiment in 2015, but were never used. These were visible on Special:Search and Special:ListGroupRights. The unused namespaces and user rights are now removed. No pages are moved, and no changes need to be made. [156] - A usability improvement to the "Add a citation" in Wikipedia workflow has been made, the insert button was moved to the popup header. [157]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 March. It will be on all wikis from 7 March (calendar). [158][159]
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on March 20. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [160]
- The HTML markup of headings and section edit links will be changed later this year to improve accessibility. See Heading HTML changes for details. The new markup will be the same as in the new Parsoid wikitext parser. You can test your gadget or stylesheet with the new markup if you add
?useparsoid=1
to your URL (more info) or turn on Parsoid read views in your user options (more info).

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 March. It will be on all wikis from 14 March (calendar). [161][162]
- After consulting with various communities, the line height of the text on the Minerva skin will be increased to its previous value of 1.65. Different options for typography can also be set using the options in the menu, as needed. [163]
- The active link color in Minerva will be changed to provide more consistency with our other platforms and best practices. [164]
- Structured data on Commons will no longer ask whether you want to leave the page without saving. This will prevent the “information you’ve entered may not be saved” popups from appearing when no information have been entered. It will also make file pages on Commons load faster in certain cases. However, the popups will be hidden even if information has indeed been entered. If you accidentally close the page before saving the structured data you entered, that data will be lost. [165]

Your userpage
[[ Hi, just a question. The redirect on your user page leads me to a page which has as the only text "To enable the newcomer homepage, visit your "Newcomer editor features" settings in Preferences. Return to Main Page." It's your user page, so if that was the intention, no problem, but perhaps you thought we would see something else? Fram (talk) 08:25, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi User:Fram. I've been playing with Special:Homepage, which is a relatively new innovation from the WMF. It appears to interact poorly with redirects and not-logged-in users. To be honest, I'd prefer WMF fixed their stuff. Stuartyeates (talk) 09:33, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024
Hello Stuartyeates,
Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Recent changes
- Web browsers can use tools called extensions. There is now a Chrome extension called Citation Needed which you can use to see if an online statement is supported by a Wikipedia article. This is a small experiment to see if Wikipedia can be used this way. Because it is a small experiment, it can only be used in Chrome in English.
- A new Edit Recovery feature has been added to all wikis, available as a user preference. Once you enable it, your in-progress edits will be stored in your web browser, and if you accidentally close an editing window or your browser or computer crashes, you will be prompted to recover the unpublished text. Please leave any feedback on the project talk page. This was the #8 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey.
- Initial results of Edit check experiments have been published. Edit Check is now deployed as a default feature at the wikis that tested it. Let us know if you want your wiki to be part of the next deployment of Edit check. [184][185]
- Readers using the Minerva skin on mobile will notice there has been an improvement in the line height across all typography settings. [186]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 April. It will be on all wikis from 11 April (calendar). [187][188]
- New accounts and logged-out users will get the visual editor as their default editor on mobile. This deployment is made at all wikis except for the English Wikipedia. [189]

The page <name> has been reviewed.
@Stuartyeates and @Utopes I would like to ask for advice. I have a lot of notifications and many of them are "The page <name> has been reviewed."
However, some of the articles that I created did not get that notification. Kurk Lietuvai is one example, but there could be more. Did I do something wrong or should have done something better?
I am asking you two, because you seem to be very experienced editors and some of my “reviewed” notifications have your nicknames next to the them.
Best regards,
Frequently.by.train (talk) 15:59, 7 April 2024 (UTC)
Hi Frequently.by.train. Page review is one of of the quality control processes here. There is a high backlog, but there are occasionally backlog drives to get the numbers down. As far as I can tell you've done nothing wrong. Stuartyeates (talk) 10:41, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you @Stuartyeates!
- I had another look at my notifications and the page mentioned in my example seems to be the only one (of those that I created) without "reviewed".
- What difference on/for Wikipedia does it make if an article has been "reviewed" or not? Does it in any way indicate lower quality, if it's not reviewed? I tried to make one as good as I could, so this would be a gut punch. 😅
- Best regards,
Frequently.by.train (talk) 15:16, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- Frequently.by.train I'm sure there's a statistical difference in quality, because there are a few odd things that get caught in review, but being unreviewed is not a bad thing. All my new pages are unreviewed when I create them, and I've been here nearly 20 years. Stuartyeates (talk) 04:56, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
